This chance discovery ended a 12-day search by the Library Company of Philadelphia for a historical treasure---a 120-page diary kept 190 years age by Deborah Logan,"a woman who knew everybody in her day,"James Green ,the librarian told the magazine American Libraries.
Most of the diary is a record of big events in Philadelphia. It also includes a description of British soldiers burning Washington D. C in the war of 1812.She describes President James Madison on horseback as "perfectly shaking with fear" during the troubled days. George Washington, she writes, mistook her for the wife of a French man, and praised her excellent English.
The adventure of the lost book began September 4 when Cory Luxmoore arrived from England to deliver the diary of his ancestor(祖先)to the Library Company, which he and his wife considered to be the best home for the diary.
Green told American Libraries he had the diary in his possession" about five minutes" when Luxmoore took it back because he had promised to show it to one other person. On returning to his hotel after showing the precious book to Green, Luxmoore was shocked to realize that he had left it in the taxi.
Without any delay, Green began calling every taxi company in the city, with no luck, "I've felt sick since then," Luxmoore told reporters.
According to Green, no one has yet learned how the diary came to the office building .Tom Brennan received a reward(奖励)of 1,000,Philadelphia gained another treasure for its history, and Luxmoore told reporters, "It's wonderful news. I'm on high".

Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father. "But, Dad, you can't be healthy if you're dead."
Dad in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt---a mistake 75% of the US population make every day. The big question is why.
There have been many myths about safety belts ever since her first appearance in cars some forty years ago. The following are three of the most common.
Myth Number One: It's best to be "thrown clear" of a serious accident.
Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to "throw you clear" is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are you'll have traveled through by a windshield(挡风玻璃)or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in cases where people are "thrown clear."
Myth Number Two: Safety belts "trap" people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.
Truth: Sorry again. but studies show that people knocked unconscious(昏迷) due to notwearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerou s situations, not to be trapped in them.
Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren't needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour.
Truth: when two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meetthe windshield with a force equal to diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.
28. Why did Elizabeth say to her father, "But, Dad, you can't be healthy if you're dead"?
A. He didn't have his safety belt on.
B. He was running across the street.
C. He was driving at great speed.
D. He didn't take his medicine on time.
29.The reason Father was in a hurry to get home was that he_____.
A. wasn't feelingvery well.
B. hated to drive in the dark.
C. wanted to take some exercise.
D. didn't want to be caught by the police.
30. Some people prefer to drive without wearing a safety belt because they believe ___.
A. cars catch fire easily
B. they will be unable to think clearly in an accident
C. they will be caught when help comes
D. the belt prevents them from escaping in an accident
31. What is the evidence given in the text?
A. Never drive faster than 30 mile an hour.
B. Never forget to wear the safety belt while driving.
C. Try your best to save yourself in a car accident.
D. Drive slowly while you're not wearing a safety belt.
D
Fish Ears Tell Fish Tales
Fish have ears. Really. They're quite small and have no opening to the outside world, carrying sound through the body. For the past seven years, Simon Thorrold, a university professor, has been examining fish ears, small round ear bones called otoliths. As fish grow, so do their otoliths. Each day, their otoliths gain a ring of calcium carbonate(碳酸钙).By looking through a microscope(显微镜)and counting these rings, Thorrold can determine the exact age of a young fish. As a fish gets older, its otoliths no longer get daily rings. Instead, they get yearly rings, which can also be counted, giving information about the fish's age, just like the growth rings of a tree. Ring counting is nothing new to fish scientists. But Thorrold has turned to a new direction. They're examining the chemical elements(元素)of each otolith ring.
The daily ring gives us the time, but chemistry tells us about the environment in which the fish swam on any given day. These elements tell us about the chemistry of the water that the fish was in. It also says something about water temperature, which determines how much of these elements will gather within each otolith ring. Thorrold can tell, for example, if a fish spent time in the open ocean before entering the less salty water of coastal areas. He can basically tell where fish are spending their time at any given stage of history.
In the case of the Atlantic croaker, a popular saltwater food fish, Thorrold and his assistant have successfully followed the travelling of young fish from mid-ocean to the coast, a journey of many hundreds of miles.
This is important to managers in the fish industry, who know nearly nothing about the whereabouts(去向,行踪) of the young fish for most food fish in the ocean. Eager to learn about his technology, fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears.
32. What can we learn about fish ears from the text?
A. They are small soft rings.
B. They are not used to receive sound.
C. They are openings only on food fish.
D. They are not seen from the outside.
33. Why does the writer compare the fish to trees?
A. Trees gain a growth ring each day.
B. They both have growth rings.
C. Their growth rings are very small.
D. Trees also have otoliths.
34. Why is it important to study the chemistry of otolith rings?
A. The elements of the otoliths can tell the history of the sea.
B. Chemical contents of otoliths can tell how fast fish can swim.
C. We can know more about fish and their living environment.
D. Scientists can know exactly how old a fish is.
35. How would you understand“fish scientists are now lending their ears”?
A. They are very interested in Thorrold's research findings.
B. They want to know where they can find fish.
C. They lend their fish for chemical studies.
D. They wonder if Thorrold can find growth rings from their ears.

参考范文
With the development of our society, energy in the world becomes more and more limited, so it is quite important for us to save energy and to protect our environment. As a student, there are a lot of methods we can do to save energy at home. For example, first, we can turn off the light as well as other appliances when we are not using them. Second, recycle the waste water, paper and other waste so that we can reuse them. What's more, it is suggested to use public transportation more instead of private cars. Above all, everyone can make a great contribution to our environment. I hope we can learn more to develop new and clear energy, like energy from the wind and solar.。
