The mummy of an Egyptia n woma n who died in 800 B.C. has justnad an operati on. The mummy is that of Shepe nmut who was once a sin ger in the Temple of Thebes. As there were strange marks on the X-ray plates take n of the mummy, doctors have bee n trying to find out whether the woma n died of a rare disease. The only way to do this was to operate. The operati on, which lasted for over four hours, proved to be very difficult because of the hard res in which covered the sk in. The doctors removed a section of the mummy and sent it to a laboratory. They also found someth ing which the X-ray plates did not show: a small wax figure of the god Duamutef. This god whichnas the head of a cow was n ormally placed in side a mummy. The doctors have not yet decided how the woma n died. They feared that the mummy would fall to pieces whe n they cut it ope n, but fortun ately this has not happe ned. The mummy successfully survived the operati on.
