13、Except for a few times, Americans are not big present-givers. There's no exchange of presents among business people, and if one American tries to give another a present, it may look like that he wants to bribe (贿赂) him. Americans have learned that in some other countries people like to give presents to others, but among ourselves we don't see the need for presents.
Even friends may never exchange presents. When I go to foreign countries, I try to bring back little things for close friends, but nobody would feel unhappy if I didn't. I don't often remember a friend's birthday, and few people outside of my family remember mine. If someone gave me presents too often, I'd get unpleasant. But a present from a foreigner - that kind from his or her homeland — won't go wrong, except to government employees (政府职员) who can't be given presents.
You usually open a present at once and in front of the person who gives it except Christmas and birthday presents. You should only say, "It's so nice. Thanks…" when you get Christmas or birthday presents.
You may want to bring a bottle of wine (葡萄酒) or flowers to a dinner party, but you're never asked to. Nobody
will mind if you bring wine, but your friend may not use it that evening.
At Christmas we often give presents to our family and sometimes our friends. We also give presents to people who have been helpful during the year- doormen, babysitters, housecleaners, newspaper senders— anyone who has often helped us.
1.What does "close friends" mean in the passage?
A.The friends who are very kind.
B.The friends who live close to each other.
C.The friends who were once classmates.
D.The friends who you like most.
2.What kind of presents don't Americans usually open in front of the givers?
A.The small presents.
B.Christmas or birthday presents.
C.The expensive presents.
D.The presents for dinner party.
3.Why do Americans also give presents to housecleaners at Christmas?
A.To pay them.
B.To help them.
C.To thank them.
D.To make them work harder.
4.Which of the following do you think is right?
A.American business people don’t want presents because they are rich enough.
B.The writer of this passage must be an American.
C.Everyone must give presen ts to one’s family and friends at Christmas.
D.Government employees can get little presents from a foreigner.
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Present-giving in the United States.
B.Customes in the United States.
C.American people and present-giving.
D.When and how to give presents.

14、What will man be like in the future---in 5,000 or even 50,000 years? We can only make guesses, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average(平均), men are about three inches(英尺)taller. Again, in the modern world we use brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capa city(容量).As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change to the head, especially the forehead, will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are used very often. In fact, we use them so much that they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand? we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald(光头的).
Perhaps all this shows that future man will not be a very attractive being to look at! This may well be true. No matter
how great the change is, future man will still have a lot in common with us.
1.The passage mainly tells us that ________
A.man’s life will be different in the future
B.future man will look quite different from us
C.man is growing taller as time passes
2.Which parts of man mentioned in the passage will change EXCEPT
A.weight and ears
B.brain and height
C.arms and legs
3.The change in the man’s size of the forehead is probably because ________
A.he makes use only 20% of the brain’s capacity
B.the other 80% of his brain will grow with time
C.he will use his brain more and more as time goes on
4.The underlined word “sensitive” means ________ in Chinese.
A.纤细的B.灵敏的C.笨拙的
5.What is TRUE about a human being in the future?
A.He may be hairless because hair is no longer useful.
B.He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses.
C.His fingers grow weaker because he doesn’t have to make use of them.

Who wants to carry abulkybag to school? No children. Nobody wants one shoulder to be lower than the other, and paining(疼痛)too. In India, most of us would look at the reduction(减少)of textbooks as a way out. But in a country like America, there are always more choices. A company called goReader has created a "school bag" which is the size of a laptop computer(笔记本电脑), weighing about 2.5 kg. The goReader has a color screen and can "hold" all the textbooks that a student may need, says a report in 'The Asian Age' newspaper.
The company plans to work closely with the publishers(出版商)of textbooks so that these books can be supplied on the Internet. All the students will have to do is to download(下载)their textbooks. Making notes and marking important parts of a lesson can be done just as lots of students have done on their textbooks before.
At present, the plan is being tested out in a university. Richard Katzmann, the owner of the company is having his creation tested at Chicago's DePaul University, where he studied. Does that mean it is goodbye to the new paper, and the smell of the black ink?

18、Once a week, Neil went grocery shopping. He always made a list, but he always forgot to put one or more things on the list. This used to anger him, but now he just accepted it. You’re not as sharp as you used to be, he told himself.
It was Friday-shopping day. He went to the $99 Store. Sometimes th ey had a lot of fresh produce, sometimes they didn’t. He got lucky. There were fresh packaged broccoli, carrots, onions, and squash. Also, packages of peaches, plums, and apples. He easily had enough produce to last all week, if it didn’t go bad first. The fruit and vegetables alone filled up four plastic bags. Four other bags contained other items that were on Neil’s list.
He drove to Albertson’s, which sold milk by the gallon (加仑) and at cheaper prices than the $99 Store. Interestingly, the price of milk had got higher in the last month. He used to buy 2 gallons of nonfat milk for $3.59. Now he was paying $4.69. Yet, the news media reports a 2-cent increase in gasoline (汽油) prices. That’s all over the news.
He parked his car in the carport and opened the trunk. He managed, as usual, to put all 10 plastic bags into his hands and take them upstairs.
“What a heavy shopping it is,” he thought. And then he told himself: if you think it’s too heavy now, wait till you can’t drive. Wait till you can’t even walk up the stairs. How are you going to get your food then? The older you get, he told himself, the more you’d better thank the fact that you can still do all these boring chores and housework.
1.Neil always made _______ before he went shopping.

A.Ten. B.Nine. C.Eight. D.Four.

19、How time flies! Great changes have taken place in our school since we took part in the civilized norms month activity. Now most of us can act better than before. We can get on well with our teachers and classmates. Some of us are so careful that we often help close the windows or the doors or turn off the lights. Some of us are kind enough to help the students in need.
Sadly, some of us pay no attention to what they are doing. For example, they care nothing about the environment. Sometimes they throw away rubbish here and there, and make a lot of noise in public. They are too impatient to wait in line. A few of us say bad words or quarrel with others.
In my opinion, as a student, we should act in a polite way. I hope we will have more activities like this. So we can learn more from these activities. I’m sure we can live happily if we try our best.。
