A
The last thing Caitlin Hipp would have expected as she prepared to turn 28 years old was to be living at homewith her parents. But through working as a part-time skating instructor and restaurant server, she isn't able to earn enough to live anywhere other than home.
To some degree, multigenerational households have always been a part of American life. However, the number of young adults who have been moving back in with their parents — or never leaving home in the first place — has been growing steadily.
UBS Financial Services released a report that even suggests one reason for the growing number of young adultsstill living at home could be that their family doesn't want them to leave.
The report shows that 74 percent of millennials (千禧一代)get some kind of financial support from their parents after college. It finds that millennials have redefined the ties that connect parents and children. Millennials see their parents as peers, friends and instructors. Nearly three quarters talked with their parents more than once a week during college. In return, their parents happily provide financial support well into adulthood, helping fund everything for them.
Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for the PNC Financial Services Group in theUS, said the number of young adults striking out on their own fell during the Great Recession. Although job growth for millennials since 2014 has improved, that doesn't necessarily mean that millennials are starting to fly the nest. He said, “They may like living at home and being able to save money.
“ There's no doubt it has held back household formation and purchases of things people spend money on related to household formation and perhaps related to child-raising," Hoffman explained. "But they are probably traveling more and eating out more if they don't have a house expense or marriage. I don't know if it represents a change in moral values. But it's much more common for adult children to live in their parents’ homes because it's becoming part of the culture.
1. What can we learn from the UBS Financial Services' report?
A. Millennials are on good terms with their parents.
B. Millennials are financially independent after college.
C. Parents are unwilling to give their young adults allowance.
D. Parents want their kids to stay with them forever.
2. What does Hoffman think of young adults' living at home?
A. It increases the consumption of household products.
B. It may continue despite job growth.
C. It is a sign of shift in moral values.
D. It is new in American culture.
3. What is the author's purpose of writing this passage?
A. To introduce millennials' living habits.
B. To stress the importance of financial independence.
C. To explain why American young adults still live at home.
D. To inform people of a social trend in theUS.

True friend from a distant land
International friends can come in many shapes and sizes. However they arrive on the scene, they are always appreciated, especially in times ofturbulence. Michael Lindsay (1909 — 94) is a case in point.
After graduating from the University of Oxford in 1931, Lindsay arrived in China in 1937 on a ship from Canada intending merely to teach economics at Beiping Yenching University, the current Peking University. He traveled with Norman Bethune the Canadian doctor who dedicated his life to medicine in China during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931 — 45).
Lindsay left Beijing at the end of 1941, and went to the Communist-led Jinchaji base(晋察冀边区)together with his wife Li Xiaoli, who was a Shanxi local and a former student of his.
“Lindsay was inspired by the hard work local Chinesepeople made in fighting against Japanese aggression. After learning that Chinese armies on the frontlines were suffering supply shortages, Lindsay was determined to lend a hand," says Yan Juhai, a retired official from Shanxi's Lyuliang city. "In the Jinchaji base, NieRongzhen( 1899 — 1992), the base's top commander, appointed him to work as the communications expert, where he became a full-time radio technician contributing greatly in communication technology innovation and training," says Yan.
In 1944 Lindsay and his wife arrived in Yan'an in Shaanxi province and helped fix its telecommunication equipment. They stayed for 18 months in Yan'an, and after the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, they decided to return to the United Kingdom to visit their parents.
4. Which word in the following can best replace the underlined word?
A. peace
B. war
C. stress
D. sorrow

A. Because his wife was a Shanxi local.
B. Because he was warmly invited by NieRongzhen.
C. Because he was touched by Chinese people's efforts
D. Because he was more interested in communications.
6. What can we learn from the article?

British sculptor Jason Taylor has made it his mission to use his talent to conserve our ecosystems by creating underwater museums. Over the years, the environmentalist has put over 850 massive artworks underwater worldwide. On February 1, 2021, Taylor launched his latest work — The Underwater Museum of Cannes.
―The main goal was to bring attention to the fact that our oceans need our help,‖ Taylor told Dezeen. ―Ocean ecology has been destroyed by human activity in the Mediterranean over the past few decades, and it is not obvious what is taking place when observing the sea from afar.‖
The Underwater Museum of Cannes contains 6 sculptures featuring local residents of various ages. They range from Maurice, an 80-year-old fisherman, to Anouk, a 9-year-old student. Towering over 6-feet-tall and weighing 10 tons, the faces are sectioned into two parts, with the outer part like a mask. The mask indicates that the world’s oceans appear powerful and unbeatable from the surface but house an ecosystem that is extremely fragile to careless human activities.
Though the waters surrounding the sculptures now appear a pristine blue, the seabed was filled with old boat engines, pipes, and other human-made trash when the project began about four years ago. Besides removing
the trash, Taylor also restored the area’s sea grass. Just one square meter of the sea grass can generate up to 10 liters of oxygen daily. The sea grass also helps prevent coastal erosion and provides habitats for many ocean creatures.
―The idea of creating an underwater museum was to draw more people underwater and develop a sense of care and protection,‖ Taylor told Dezeen. ―If we threw unwanted waste near a forest, there would be a public outcry. But this is happening every day in our surrounding waters and it largely goes unnoticed.
8. Why does the outer part ofthe sculptures look like a mask?
A. To popularize the features of the locals.
B. To remind people to protect themselves.
C. To reflect people’s protection of the ocean.
D. To stress the sensitiveness of the ecosystem.
9. What’s paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How the project was started.
B. How the sea grass was restored.
C. What recovery effort the project made.
D. Why the surroundings were improved.
10. What can we infer from what Jason Taylor said in the last paragraph?
A. The situation of the ocean is easily ignored.
B. The destruction caused to the ocean is noticeable.
C. Forests play a more important role in ecosystems.
D. People have zero tolerance to damage done to nature.
11. What might be the best title for the text?
A. The Underwater Museum, a long way to go.
B. The Underwater Museum, a big difference to the sea.
C. The Underwater Museum, an appeal to conserve ecosystems.
D. The Underwater Museum, a masterpiece of Jason Taylor.
D
When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood,he wasbetter off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was
happier. Far happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys fromBoston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence(能力)and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society, ” said George Vaillant, the psychologist(心理学家)who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.
Working—at any age—is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings(基础)of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work.”
12. What do we know about John?
A. He received little love from his family.
B. He had few childhood playmates.
C. He enjoyed his career and marriage.
D. He was envied by others in his childhood.
13. Vaillant’s words in Paragraph 2 serve as _______.
A. a description of personal values and social values
B. an analysis of how work was related to competence
C. an example for parents' expectations of their children
D. an explanation why some boys grew into happy men
14. Vaillant's team got their findings by _______.
A. recording the boys' effort in school
B. comparing different sets of scores
C. evaluating the men's mental health
D. measuring the men's problem solving ability
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Competent adults know more about love than work.
B. Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life.
C. Love brings more joy to people than work does.
D.Independenceis the key to one's success.

Johnson lived alone in a small town, Salem. Once he suffered a minor stroke (中风). He didn't usually go outside of his home unless it was to get his favorite food: pizza. He only ordered from Domino’s Pizza, and due to him frequently ordering, the staff was well familiar with his name.
Although Johnson was a loyal customer, the staff had never heard his voice or seen is face. It was only the delivery drivers who caught a glance of the man. Many neighbors went on to say that he just liked to keep to himself.
The manager of Johnson’s local Domino’s Pizza, Mary, said that he was always so polite to the delivery staff. Throughout the seven years of him placing orders at and supporting the particular Domino’s store, there had never been a problem.
And so none of the employees at Johnson's local Domino’s seemed to notice anything unusual the first couple of days. However, this quickly changed when Mary realized that they hadn't had an order from Johnson in a while. Johnson was considered to be one of the branch's most loyal customers. It was unusual that Johnson hadn't
ordered anything for more than 12 days. They felt something might be off. A member of the staff, Tom, was sent to Johnson’s house to see if they could notice anything unusual.
As Tom approached Johnson’s house, he was relieved to see that the lights were on. Johnson wasn't answering the door, even though the lights and TV were on in his room. Tom decided to knock once again and called him on his phone, but there was no answer. There was a horrible feeling in the pit of his stomach. Tom decided to call the police. After hearing the situation, the police arrived quickly. They knocked on the door just as Tom had, but there was no answer once again. Just then one of the officers heard a faint voice coming from inside of the home.
