Chaozhou cuisine is a famous branch of Cantonese cuisine, known for its unique flavors and diverse ingredients. Among the many delicacies of Chaozhou cuisine, the snacks are particularly popular. As a native of Chaozhou, I would like to introduce some of my favorite Chaozhou snacks.
First and foremost, there is "Teochew fishball" (潮州鱼丸). Made from fresh fish meat, the fishballs are bouncy
and chewy, with a subtle sweetness. They are often served
in a clear, savory broth, accompanied by crispy fried wontons and fragrant coriander.
Another must-try snack is "oyster omelette" (蚝烙).
This dish features plump, juicy oysters nestled in a crispy, golden-brown egg batter. The omelette is typically
garnished with tangy chili sauce and fresh scallions,
creating a perfect balance of flavors and textures.
For those with a sweet tooth, "Chaozhou rice cake" (潮
州糕粿) is a delicious treat. Made from glutinous rice
flour and filled with a variety of sweet or savory fillings, such as red bean paste or minced meat, the rice cakes are steamed until soft and fluffy. They are often served with a drizzle of sweet syrup or a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds.
Last but not least, "Chaozhou beef balls" (潮州牛肉丸) are a classic snack that cannot be missed. These meaty
balls are made from minced beef, mixed with various spices and seasonings, and then boiled until tender. They are
often served in a clear, fragrant broth, along with crunchy vegetables and chewy rice noodles.
