My Favorite Traditional Festivals
Hi there! My name is Emma, and I'm going to tell you all about my favorite traditional festivals. Festivals are so much fun because there are always special foods, activities, and decorations involved. Plus, you get to spend quality time with your family and friends. Every culture around the world has its own unique festivals, and I'm lucky enough to celebrate some of them every year.
One of my favorite festivals is the Chinese New Year, which usually falls in late January or early February. It's a huge celebration that lasts for about two weeks! The festivities begin on New Year's Eve with a big family dinner called a reunion dinner. We eat special dishes like dumplings, whole fish, and nian gao (a sticky rice cake). After dinner, kids receive red envelopes filled with money from their parents, grandparents, and other relatives. It's so exciting!
The next day is Chinese New Year's Day, and there are lots of fun traditions. We wear new clothes to symbolize a fresh start for the new year. Fireworks and firecrackers are set off to scare away evil spirits. My favorite part is the lion and dragon dances
performed by skilled dancers. The bright, colorful costumes and lively music make it such an incredible show.
Another festival I look forward to is Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. It usually takes place in October or November. For several days leading up to Diwali, families clean their homes and decorate with beautiful rangoli designs made from colored rice, sand, or flower petals. On Diwali night, we light up our homes with candles, oil lamps, and fireworks to symbolize the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.
One of the best parts of Diwali is all the delicious food! My mom makes sweet treats like ladoo (ball-shaped sweets made with flour, sugar, and ghee), barfi (milk-based fudge), and jalebi (deep-fried pretzel-shaped sweets soaked in syrup). We also exchange gifts and dress up in our finest clothes. It's a dazzling and joyous celebration!
In the spring, my family celebrates Easter, a Christian holiday. On Easter Sunday, we go to church and then have a big feast with our extended family. The star of the meal is usually a baked ham or roasted lamb. My favorite part is the Easter egg hunt! Before the meal, my parents and grandparents hide chocolate eggs, candy, and small toys around the house and backyard. My
siblings and I race around trying to find as many as we can. Whoever collects the most eggs wins a special prize!
After the egg hunt, we decorate hard-boiled eggs using food coloring, stickers, and other crafty materials. It's so much fun to get creative and see everyone's unique designs. In the evening, we might watch a movie together or play games as a family. It's a cozy, fun-filled day spent with the people I love most.
Another springtime festival I enjoy is Holi, the Hindu festival of colors and love. It's an ancient celebration that welcomes the arrival of spring. A few days before Holi, big bonfires are lit to symbolize the triumph of good over evil. On the main day of Holi, everyone gathers in the streets or parks for a vibrant color festival.
People chase each other while throwing handfuls of brightly colored powder called gulal. By the end of it, everyone is covered in a rainbow of colors from head to toe! There's also plenty of water play with water guns, water balloons, and buckets of colored water. It's a messy but incredibly joyous and carefree celebration. Afterward, we enjoy delicious treats like gujiya (sweet dumplings stuffed with dried fruits and nuts) and thandai (a cool, creamy drink flavored with spices and nuts).
Those are some of my favorite traditional festivals, but there are so many more incredible ones celebrated around the world. Each festival has its own unique customs, foods, and ways of celebrating. I feel very lucky to be able to take part in these special cultural events every year. They bring me closer to my family and allow me to learn about my heritage. Plus, they're just super fun! I can't wait to experience many more amazing festivals as I grow older.。
