Various sports attract fans for different reasons: Spectator sports draw even more fans who just love to watch. Here are some of the most beloved sports worldwide.
Hockey-2 billion fans
Hockey, both on ice and on a field, wins a following of two billion enthusiastic fans worldwide. Field hockey is mainly played in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, while ice hockey is particularly popular in Canada and the US, where kids grow up playing pond hockey. Unlike ice hockey, field hockey usually does not involve body contact in the form of checking and hitting.
Football-4 billion fans
Football, better known as soccer in the US, is by far the most popular sport in the world. Experts estimate that the origin (起源) of football may go as far back as two thousand years, beginning in ancient China during the Han Dynasty. One major reason for football’s global popularity is that unlike other sports that require expensive equipment, all you need to play football is a ball and your feet.
Volleyball-900 million fans
Volleyball pits two teams across a high net, each attempting to smash the ball onto the opponent’s floor. A popular variant, beach volleyball, is competed on sand by pairs rather than the regular six players per team. The crowd appeal of beach volleyball has grown greatly in recent years.
Tennis-1 billion fans
An estimated one billion people worldwide follow professional tennis tournaments and matches. In tennis, players on both sides of a net try to hit a ball with a racket so that it either goes past their opponent (对手) or bounces twice on their opponent’s side of the court to score points. Tennis superstars like Rafae l, Nadal, and Serena Williams are now household names around the world, with huge international fan bases.

Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher’s dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I really loathed math. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do well, but simply that I didn’t think I was able to do well. “I can’t” became my state of mind in all things about math.
However, I was soon to learn that “I can’t” was not a choice in Mr. A’s class.
Mr. A always greeted us with open arms as he said, “Welcome! Smile! It’s a great day to be alive!” It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the “T can’t” student.
I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A’s presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became “cool” to have lunch and talk with Mr. A.We didn’t know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes.
Though my story is no t one of overnight successes and I didn’t become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding me, “Kate, smile! It’s a-great day to be alive!”
24.What does the underlined word “loathed” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Hated. B.Loved. C.Researched. D.Understood.
25.What do we know about Mr. A?
A.He loved math and his job. B.He liked showing his sufferings.
C.He was very strict with the students. D.He preferred to encourage the top students.
26.How did the author like her talk over lunch with Mr. A?
A.It was boring. B.It was awkward. C.It was challenging. D.It was meaningful.
27.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.Kate made progress in math study. B.Kate gradually fell in love with math.
C.Kate was still afraid of math problems. D.Kate became a top student in math class.

My First Marathon(马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was"not athletic".
The idea that I was "not athletic"stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带)became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile3, I passed a sign:"GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner".

When someone asks me what my goals are for the coming year,I don't usually know how to reply. Of course I, as most people do , want to see an improvement in my grades. This year, however, I'm hoping for something different.
Through the course of my school life , I've gradually developed a new understanding of the word prioritization(优先次序)". The first thing I wish to get in Senior One is the ability to manage my time better, I'll surely become busier with the coming semester, and proper organization is important. From school clubs to academic competitions, everything should be set up in a way that doesn't influence my health , which leads me to my second goal.
My mother has always told me to put my health first, so in the future, I hope to be both physically and mentally healthy. A person can't study without the energy to do so. And finally , I hope that I won't be discouraged by my failure and never give up on my dreams.I hope that I'll have the courage to try new activities and clubs. I believe my final goal can apply to every student around the world. We should all respect one another's likes and dislikes, and focus on each other's strengths, not our weaknesses. Everyone should try to make use of all of life's opportunities.
Albert Einstein once said, " Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance (平衡), you must keep moving. " In my case, it's the other way around. In order to keep moving, I must keep my balance-the balance between studies and activities, efficiency and procrastination (拖延症),academics and health, passions and dislikes. The new journey is going to be a hard one, but if I set these goals, I believe I will make it through to the end.

A. It is the opposite.
B. It is difficult.
C.It is the necessity.
D.It is helpful.
35.What is the writer's purpose of writing the passage?
A. To share her goals for the coming school year.

I’m sorry to learn that you are having such a bad time. Actually, most people will feel homesick and anxious when they leave home and come to a new place, especially a foreign country. So don’t worry too much.
Here are some tips for you. To begin with, you’d better try to change some of your habits so that you can get used to the new environment as soon as possible. What’s more, make more new friends, who can share their hobbies and ideas with you. You will feel less homesick with many friends around you. Last but not least, you should take part in some social activities. It will help you learn more about the local customs and cultures.
I hope my advice will be useful. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua。
