How do you make a banana milk shake?
Grade level: 8th grade
Language focus: Imperative verbs, recipe writing
Objectives:
Students will be able to use imperative verbs to give instructions for making a banana milk shake. Students will be able to write a recipe for making a banana milk shake.
Materials:
Copies of the banana milk shake recipe handout
Ingredients and equipment for making banana milk shakes (banana, milk, ice cream, blender, cups, spoons, etc.)
Whiteboard and markers
Procedure:
Warm-up
Start the lesson by asking the students if they like milkshakes and what their favorite flavor is. Then, ask them if they know how to make a milkshake. Elicit some responses and write them on the board.
Vocabulary and Grammar
Introduce the imperative form of verbs and give some examples. Explain that when giving instructions or directions, we often use the imperative form of verbs. Write some examples on the board, such as: "add", "blend", "pour", "mix", "slice", "peel", etc. Have the students repeat the verbs and their meanings.
Recipe Reading
Distribute the banana milk shake recipe handout and have the students read it silently. Then, ask the students to work in pairs and discuss the recipe. Have them identify the imperative verbs and write them down.
Recipe Demonstration
Demonstrate how to make a banana milk shake using the ingredients and equipment. Use the imperative form of verbs when giving instructions. For example, "Peel the banana", "Slice the banana", "Add the ice cream", "Pour the milk", etc. Have the students follow along with you.
Recipe Writing
Ask the students to work in pairs and write their own recipe for making a banana milk shake. They should use the imperative form of verbs and include all the necessary ingredients and equipment.
