The Americans believe that anybody can become President of the United States. In a recent Hollywood comedy, that is exactly what happens.
Dave Kovic, played by Kevin Kline, is a kind-hearted man who runs a business that finds people jobs. He leads a typical American way of life, except for one thing --- he looks exactly like the President, Bill Mitchell. In fact, the only thing that makes him different from the nation’s leader is that he is very nice!
The president has started look-alikes during some public appearances. Dave is offered a chance to “serve his country〞 by becoming one. However, things go wrong. The President becomes very ill and Dave ends up acting as the President forever.
Director Ivan Reitman, who made the popular and successful comedies like Twins, Ghostbusters and Legal Eagles, could have gone for laughs by making fun of the American government. Instead, Dave is an attractive comedy about an ordinary man in extraordinary situations. Kevin Kline gives a double performance as Dave and the President, and Sigourney Weaver is at her best as his First Lady. The love story that develops between her role and Dave is a real classic.
The film is 100% American. However, if you’ve ever felt that anybody could do a better job running the country than the people in power, then you’ll enjoy Dave!
56. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To tell the reader about the American government.
B. To discuss the Americans’ ideas about the President.
C. To make a comparison between Dave and other films.
D. To introduce a new film to the reader.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many
of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.
The expression “to be in hot water〞 is one of them. It is a very
old expression. “Hot water〞 was used five hundred years ago to mean being
in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.
That no longer happens. But we still get in “hot water〞. When we
are in “hot water〞, we are in trouble. It can be any kind of trouble---serious, and not so serious. A person who breaks a law can be
in hot water with the police. A young boy can be in hot water with his mother,
if he comes into the house with dirty shoes.
Being in “deep water〞 is almost the same as being in hot water. When
you are in “deep water〞, you are in a difficult position. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown into water over his head.
You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest(投资) in stocks without knowing anything about the stock market. “To keep your head above water〞 is a colorful expression that means staying out of debt. A company seeks to keep its head above water during economic hard times. A man who loses his job tries to keep his head above water until he finds a new job.
“Water over the dam〞 is another expression about a past event. It is something that is finished. It cannot be changed. The expression comes from
the idea that water which has flowed over a dam cannot be brought back again.
60. The passage mainly tells us _______ .
A. the importance of water in our life
B. some expressions about water
C. some sad stories about water
D. some lessons about daily life
61. When a friend is troubled by a mistake she has made, you might tell
her to forget about it. You say “ _______〞.
A. You are in hot water
B. You are in deep water
C. Keep your head above water
D. It is water over the dam
62.Two of the phrases “to be in hot water〞“to be in deep water〞 mentioned
in the passage have the same meaning of “ _______ 〞.
A. to be in debt
B. to be in difficulty

D. to be out of water
63. Which of the following expressions is a bit different from the others
in meaning?
A. To be in hot water.
B. To be in deep water.
C. To keep your head above water.
D. Water over the dam.

Two travelling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was impolite and refused to let the angels stay in the guest room. Instead the angels were given a space in the cold underground room. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, “Things aren’t always what they seem.〞The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very kind farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning, the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their only income, lay dead in the field.
The younger angel was very angry and asked the older angel, “How could this happen? Why did you not watch out for the cow? The first man had everything, yet you watched over his house,〞 she accused. “The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you did not help.〞
“Things aren’t always what they seem,〞 the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the underground room , I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so greedy and unwilling to share his good fortune, I asked God if I could seal the wall so he couldn’t find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I asked God if the angel could take the cow instead. You see, things aren’t always what they seem.〞

A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment? As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in a garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower.
A biodegradable(生物分解)mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage consumers to recycle.
Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and is able to change shape. Over time it can also break down into the soil without giving out any poisonous chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms fertilizers. These feed the seed and help the flower grow.
Engineers have designed a small transparent(透明)window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away. “We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the covers so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time,〞 said one scientist.
As phone technology is developing so quickly, people are constantly throwing their mobiles away. This means phone-makers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief(缓解)for nature , according to the scientists.
“The seed comes out and the flower grows in the pot so you don’t have to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it,〞 said Kerry Kirwan. She leads the research team, which is based at the University of Warwick in Britain.
68.What is the purpose of this passage?
A.To tell the popularity of biodegradable cell phones.
B.To persuade the reader to buy the biodegradable cell phone.
C.To discuss the development of phone technology.
D.To introduce an environmental-friendly cell phone to readers. 69.People throw away their cell phones most probably because__________.
A.there is something wrong with them
B.no sunflowers can grow out of them
C.they are out of fashion
D.they are becoming cheaper and cheaper
70.It could be learned from the passage that_________.
A.developing the new type of phone is mainly to protect the environment B.phone-makers will benefit much more from the new type of phone C.the new type of phone will certainly be popular with users all over the world
D.the phones that can be recycled are available only in Britain now 71.What might be the most suitable title for this passage?
A.Sunflower and Phone. B.Plant Your Phone.
C.Protect Our Environment. D.No Worry about Phone.

Some people seem to have a skill for learning languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules of grammar, and learn to write in the new language more quickly than others. They do not seem to be more clever than others, so what makes language learning so much easier for them? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners, we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them.
First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher; they discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and rules by themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.
Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try their best to communicate with others.
They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.
Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practice using the language regularly because they want to learn in it.
