China and Western country may have different cultural beliefs about certain animals. But when it comes to pigs, we somehow reach an agreement that pigs are lazy, ugly, stupidly and shameless. Neither of these words describing pigs are exactly positive. Moreover, the truth is what pigs have some good qualities. And there’s probably no good time to clear their names than now, with the arrival of the Y ear of the Pig on Chinese Spring Festival, which fell February 5 this year. According to a paper publishing in 2017, pigs can tell between those who treat them well or those who don’t.Perhaps these are the qualities of pigs to keep it in mind—their intelligence, cuteness and patience.

六、阅读理解
文章大意:本文是一篇议论文,很多有名的运动员成为孩子的偶像,他们的言行对崇拜他们的人有很大影响,因此应注意自身的言行,履行社会责任。
13. A character in one of Shakespeare’s plays once said, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon
them.” Any of these could apply to the modern-day sportsmen. Many still argue about the nature of talent. Some claim that people are born to be sportsmen, while others say it is only through devotion and hard work that they achieve their abilities. Arguably though, it is not until their talents are acknowledged (认可) by the public that they truly have greatness fallen upon them.
With this acknowledgement of their “greatness” come all the trappings of modern-day celebrity: money, power, influence and responsibility. For better or for worse, like it or hate it, modern sportsmen are the role models of children everywhere. These children will grow up admiring their heroes, devoting their lives to copying their every move, and wanting above all to be like them. Due to this fascination, particularly with the massive influence of the media, it is more important than ever for these sportsmen to acknowledge their responsibility.
In the past few months alone, there have been many examples of questionable behaviors from sports stars of the present day. They are often mirroring the very worst aspects of society, a fact that the self-righteous (自以为是的) anger of the modern press has been quick to point out. It would be wrong for us to expect sportsmen to be perfect. It would also be wrong for us to think that their behavior is markedly different from the sportsmen they grew up watching, but with the all-seeing eye of modern media it is a different world, and different standards must be expected.
Of course, there is no duty for sportsmen to be good role models. There are no prison sentences, no fines, no community service—unless their behaviors are illegal. Unless they break the law, it is entirely up to them as to whether or not they think their behavior is appropriate. Furthermore, measuring the true influence their decisions have on their followers is absolutely impossible. Some will rise against their idols, seeing them in a new light and criticizing their actions. Others may copy their heroes’ actions, using them as a shield when accused of the same crimes.
It is without doubt that the actions of sportsmen will influence the lives of those who worship them. Modern day sportsmen are almost ideals of today’s world, and their actions are watched carefully by millions over the world. Some may complain against it, denying their influence on these
children’s lives. Others may be aware of it but not respect it, while many may both be aware of it and respect it. In a word, you do not choose whether you are a role model. All you can do is to decide how to act when greatness is thrust upon you.
1. In Paragraph 1, the author tries to emphasize ______.
A.sportsmen become great when their gifts are recognized by people
B.sportsmen achieve greatness through their devotion and efforts
C.different ways for sportsmen to achieve success and greatness
D.the core characteristic to become great sportsmen nowadays
2. According to Paragraph 4, we can learn that ______.
A.role models usually have positive influence on their fans
B.sportsmen have the right to behave freely within the law
C.all the fans will follow their heroes’ actions
D.no duty is given to sportsmen
3. The underlined phrase thrust upon in paragraph 1 most probably means ______.
A.put off B.removed from C.related to D.forced on
4. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To advise the media to choose proper events to report.
B.To inform the public that sportsmen are no role models.
C.To remind the sportsmen of their social responsibilities.
D.To argue that sportsmen should not be expected as heroes.
14. Not so long ago, most people didn’t know who Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was going to become. She was just an average high athlete. There was every indication that she was just another Jamaican teenager without much of a future. However, one person wanted to change this. Stephen Francis observed then eighteen-year-old Shelly-Ann at a track meet and was convinced that he had seen the beginnings of true greatness. Her times were not exactly impressive, but even so, he sensed there was something trying to get out, something the other coaches had overlooked when they had assessed her and found her lacking. He decided to offer Shelly-Ann a place in his very strict training sessions. Their cooperation quickly produced results, and a few years later at Jamaica’s Olympic trials in early 2008, Shelly-Ann, who at that time only ranked number 70 in the world, beat Jamaica’s unchallenged queen of the sprint.
“Where did she come from?” asked an astonished sprinting world, before concluding that she must be one of those one-hit wonders that spring up from time to time, only to disappear again without signs. But Shelly-Ann was to prove that she was anything but a one-hit wonder. At the Beijing Olympics she swept away any doubts about her ability to perform consistently by becoming the first Jamaican woman ever to win the 100 metres Olympic gold. She did it again one year on at the World Championships in Berlin, becoming world champion with a time of 10.73 — the fourth fastest time ever.
Shelly-Ann is a little woman with a big smile. She has a mental toughness that did not come about by chance. Her journey to becoming the fastest woman on earth has been anything but smooth and effortless. She grew up in one of Jamaica’s toughest inner-city communities known as Waterhouse, where she lived in a one-room apartment, sleeping four in a bed with her mother and two brothers. Waterhouse, one of the poorest communities in Jamaica, is a really violent and overpopulated place. Several of Shelly-Ann’s friends and family were caught up in the killings; one of her cousins was shot dead only a few streets away from where she lived. Sometimes her family didn’t have enough to eat. She ran at the school championships barefooted because she couldn’t afford shoes. Her mother Maxime, one of a family of fourteen, had been an athlete herself as a young girl but, like so many other girls in Waterhouse, had to stop after she had her first baby. Maxime’s early entry into the adult world with its responsibilities gave her the determination to ensure that her kids would not end up in Waterhouse’s roundabout of poverty. One of the first things Maxime used to do with Shelly-Ann was taking her to the track, and she was ready to sacrifice everything.
It didn’t take long for Shelly-Ann to realize that sports could be her way out of Waterhouse. On a summer evening in Beijing in 2008, all those long, hard hours of work and commitment finally bore fruit. The barefoot kid who just a few years previously had been living in poverty, surrounded by criminals and violence, had written a new chapter in the history of sports.
But Shelly-Ann’s victory was far greater than that. The night she won Olympic gold in Beijing, the routine murders in Waterhouse and the drug wars in the neighbouring streets stopped. The dark cloud above one of the world’s toughest criminal neighbourhoods simply disappeared for a few days. “I have so much fire burning for my country,” Shelly said. She plans to start a foundation for homeless children and wants to build a community
centre in Waterhouse. She hopes to inspire the Jamaicans to lay down their weapons. She intends to fight to make it a woman’s as well as a man’s world.
As Muhammad Ali puts it, “Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them. A desire, a dream,
a vision.” One of the things Shelly-Ann can be proud of is her understanding of this truth.
1. Why did Stephen Francis decide to coach Shelly-Ann?
A.He had a strong desire to free her family from trouble.
B.He sensed a great potential in her despite her weaknesses.
C.She had big problems maintaining her performance.
D.She suffered a lot of defeats at the previous track meets.
2. What did the sprinting world think of Shelly-Ann before the 2008 Olympic Games?
A.She would become a promising star.B.She badly needed to set higher goals.
C.Her sprinting career would not last long.D.Her talent for sprinting was known to all.
3. What made Maxime decide to train her daughter on the track?
A.Her success and lessons in her career.B.Her interest in Shelly-Ann’s quick profit.
C.Her wish to get Shelly-Ann out of poverty.D.Her early entrance into the sprinting world.
4. What can we infer from Shelly-Ann’s statement underlined in Paragraph 5?
A.She was highly rewarded for her efforts.B.She was eager to do more for her country.
C.She became an athletic star in her country.D.She was the envy of the whole community.
5. By mentioning Muhammad Ali’s words, the author intends to tell us that .

主要讲述作者一开始选择了商业管理专业后让作者疲惫不堪,后来觉得学习古典文学、艺术史和其他人文学院提供的专业也是可以的。

15. When I graduated from high school, I wanted to major in comparative literature. But, once I found out my friends were going into “real”majors, like marketing, nursing, and engineering, I figured I needed to do the same to ensure a good career. So I changed my mind and chose Business Management as my major. I forced myself to believe that I would enjoy it and succeed in the future, but eventually I exhausted myself understanding the economy and trying new marketing techniques. Coming out of this experience, I realize it is ok to be different from others and to study things like classics, art history and other majors offered in the College of Humanities(人文学科)!
The worries most people have about a Humanities degree and finding a career afterwards are that the majors are too abstract, and one will not obtain any applicable skills. Actually ideas discussed in Humanities classes, which are occasionally different from what people commonly believe, offer a broad perspective(视角). How could one effectively be an unbiased(无偏见的)writer with only a knowledge of the popular opinion of society? How could one speak persuasively with closed minds? Only seeing the world through a single perspective leads to missed learning, missed friendships, and missed growth! With a broader perspective, we will be more free, more open-minded, and less limited in what we can become!
STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) graduates learn actual skills in their studies, while humanities majors learn “soft skills” like communicating effectively through writing critically and speaking persuasively, synthesizing(综合)ideas through gathering and interpreting information, and developing cultural awareness. Do those soft skills sound useless and inapplicable to you? Think of it. How often do you communicate with others? Produce ideas? Encounter people from other cultures? Every day. Every SECOND of every day. So why not master these skills?
If you choose a major in the College of Humanities, you will be needed. The job market is quietly creating thousands of openings a week for people who can bring a humanist’s grace to our rapidly evolving high-tech future. Y our skills will be valuable to any workplace you hope to be in. Chase after your dream major with all your energy, no matter what other people think.
1. Why did the author choose Business Management as his major at first?
A.He was tired of learning comparative literature.
B.He came to enjoy learning marketing techniques.
C.He wanted to go to the same university as his friends.
D.He believed Business Management was more practical.
2. According to the author, what is a possible way to gain a broad perspective?
A.Making more friends and learning from them.
B.Exchanging ideas in a philosophy seminar.
C.Opening your mind to future possibilities.
D.Getting to know the popular opinion of society
3. In which of the following situations do soft skills play the most important role?
A.Writing a software program.B.Performing a heart operation.
C.Playing a musical instrument.D.Negotiating with a business partner.
4. The author believes the job market for Humanities graduates is ________.
A.recovering B.depressing
C.promising D.challenging

文章主要介绍了SoundWatch程序,可以提醒有听力障碍的人周围的声音。
介绍了其工作方式以及应用情况。
16. Dhruv Jain, who presented this new system, shares that the main motivation for the creation of this app came from his own experience and
conversations that his colleagues and he had had with deaf and hard-of hearing people over several years. He presented the phone and smartwatch application called SoundWatch.
Jain, who has trouble hearing, uses SoundWatch at home to avoid seeping through a smoke alarm. He also says that on a nature walk, it will tell him that birds are singing and that there is a waterfall nearby. The sounds make him feel more present and connected to the world.
Such sound awareness applications for smartphones already exist. However, Jain prefers the immediacy of sound notifications (告知) on his wrist, rather than in his pocket. Surveys of deaf people or those who are hard of hearing show that he is not alone.
The SoundWatch application pairs an Android phone or smartwatch. The watch records ambient (环境的) noises. It then sends the data to the smartphone for processing. When the phone detects a sound of interest, the smartwatch vibrates and a notification is displayed on its face.
Jain, who is a computer scientist at the Washington University in Seattle, and colleagues designed the application to identify up to twenty noises.
During the experiments, the SoundWatch application correctly identified those twenty sounds 81.2% of the time.
When it’s set to listen only for door knocks, fire alarms, alarm clocks, or other urgent noises, the app shows 97. 6% accuracy. Eight hard-of hearing and deaf people who used the application around a university campus gave the app broadly favorable reviews. However, it should be noted that the app misclassified some of the noisy outdoor settings and sounds.
Jain and his colleagues are now working on a newer version of SoundWatch that users can train to recognize new sounds, such as their house alarm, using just a few recordings.
1. Compared with the already-existing sound awareness app for smartphones, what is the advantage?
A.Quick to recognize.B.Convenient to carry.
C.Easy to apply.D.Cheap to make.
2. What does the underlined word “vibrate” most probably mean in Para. 4?
A.Make a sound.B.Shake quickly.
C.Give a verbal warning.D.Move forward.
3. What is the SoundWatch like right now?
A.It is quite perfect.B.It can identify any noise.
C.It is widely used.D.It needs improvement.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.SoundWatch Application: The Fist App or People with Hearing Loss
B.Sound Awareness Application: The Best App for People Who Cannot Hear
C.A Sound Awareness App Identifies Different Kinds of Noises for the Old
D.A SmartWatch APP Can Warn People with Hearing Loss of Nearby Sounds
七、阅读理解
文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要讲述当今动物园的重点是保护动物,文章讲述了动物园对动物的一些保护措施。
17. Conservation is the main focus of most zoos today. Public perception has, to a large extent, not yet caught up with this shift in focus. Zoos
put an enormous effort into educating the public about their valuable role as conservation centers.
At the same time, most people come to zoos at least in part to be entertained. 1 The recent addition of a giraffe-feeding platform at the Reid Park Zoo in Tues on, Arizona, has been wildly successful. Most of the program’s profits go to conservation projects around the world.
Zoo professionals put a great deal of effort into tools and activities that provide animals with stimulation (刺激). It has been proven that captive (圈养) animals with habitat enrichment do much better than those without it. 2 Zookeepers may spend months developing a new form of enrichment and then discover that an animal has no interest in it.
Zoo keepers often stimulate natural behaviors by using techniques such as hiding food in enclosures so that animals need to search and reach for it. 3 Some zoos make frozen taste treats for their animals, in eluding rats and fish.
Many zoos do some amount of behavioral training of animals-often as a way to enable staff to provide better care. For example, lions and tigers can be trained to touch a “target” or to put their tails through a fence. Later, they will accept an injection in the same manner. A baboon (狒狒) can be trained to present a shoulder for the same purpose. 4
A constant concern at all zoos is where money is going to come from. It takes a huge amount of money to keep and care for zoo animals,
maintain exhibits, and pay staff salaries. 5 Every zoo has a “wish list” of projects, including updating exhibits and developing new ones.
A.Zoos must always look for ways to pay for expenses.
B.Other forms of enrichment include things that stimulate the senses.
C.Zoos vary greatly in size and in the amount of money they have for expansion.
D.Such training can help zoo vets provide better, and often less intrusive care.
E.Other sensory enrichment may include stimulating the sense of smell with cooking spices.
F.Zoos must keep the public interested, so they are always working to develop new programs and exhibits.
G.The goal of enrichment is to keep animals stimulated for as long a time as possible, and efforts involve a great deal of trial and error.
