The findings, the first to show differences in very young babies, suggest there is a biological basis to their preferences.Psychologists Dr. Brenda Todd from City University London carried out an experiment involving 90 babies aged 9 months to 36 months. The babies were allowed to choose from seven toys. Some were typically boys’ toys—a car, a digger, a ball and a blue teddy. The rest were girls’ toys: a pink teddy, a doll and a cooking set. They were placed a meter away from the toys, and could pick whichever toy they liked; their choices and the amount of time they spent playing with each toy were recorded.Of the youngest children (9 to 14 months), girls spent significantly longer playing with the doll than boys, and boys spent much more time with the car and ball than the girls did. Among the two and three-year-olds, girls spent 50 percent of the time playing with the doll while only two boys briefly touched it. The boys spent almost 90 percent of their time playing with cars, which the girls barely touched. There was no link between the parents’ view on which toys were more appropriate for boys or girls, and t he children’s choices.Dr. Brenda Todd said, “Children of this age are already exposed to much socialization. Boys may be given ‘toys that go’ while girls get toys they can care for, which may help shape their preference. But these findings agree with the former idea that children show natural interests in particular kinds of toys. There could be a biological basis for their choices. Males through evolution have been adapted to prefer moving objects, probably through hunting instincts (本能), while girls prefer warmer colors such as pink, the color of a newborn baby.”41. Baby boys and girls have different toy preferencesprobably because ______.A. baby boys are much more activeB. baby girls like bright colors moreC. their parents treat them differentlyD. there is a natural difference between them42. Both baby boys and baby girls like to play with______ according to the study.A. a ballB. a teddyC. a carD. a doll43. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?A. Nine-month-old baby boys don’t play withdolls at all.B. Two-year-old baby girls sometimes playwith cars and balls.C. The older the babies are, the more obvioustheir preferences are.D. Parents should teach their babies to shareeach other’s toys.44. What conclusion did Dr. Brenda Todd drawfrom the results of the study?A. Adults purposely influence their babies’preference.B. Babies’ preference isn’t affected by socialsurroundings.C. Baby boys preferring to moving toys will begood at hunting.D. Baby girls preferring warmer colors will bewarm-hearted.45. We may read this article in a ______ section of anewspaper.A. scienceB. healthC. educationD. entertainmentCForget counting sheep, next time you are having trouble going to sleep, try putting on a jazz CD.Researchers have shown just 45 minutes of relaxing music before bedtime can make for a restful night. The Taiwanese researchers studied the sleeping patterns of 60 elderly people with sleep problems. They told the Journal of Advanced Nursing how the technique was easy to learn and lacked the side effects of other treatments. The study participants were either given a choice of music to listen to before going to sleep or nothing at all. The music group was able to choose from six tapes that featured soft, slow music—around 60~80 beats per minute—such as jazz, folk or orchestral pieces.Listening to music caused physical changes that aided restful sleep, including a lower heart and respiratory(呼吸的)rate, the researchers found. The people in the music group reported a 35% improvement in their sleep, including better and longer night-time sleep and less dysfunction(机能障碍)during the day.Lead author Professor Hui-Ling Lai of the Buddhist Tzu-Chi General Hospital and the University of Taiwan said, “The music group reported a 26% overall improvement in the first week and this figure continued to rise as they mastered the technique of relaxing into sedative(有镇静作用的)music.”Professor Jim Horne, from the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough Unive rsity, said, “If anyone is a bit worried before they go to bed, then anything that can help calm them down and relax is a good thing.”“Some say making sure older people sleep less in the afternoon and get plenty of exposure to daylight can help them ge t a better night’s sleep.”46. In the researcher s’opinion, listening to music is better than other treatments because ______.A. listening to music can save time and moneyB. other treatments have no effect at allC. people suffer too much when trying othertreatmentsD. listening to music is easy to learn and lacks sideeffects of other treatments47. Which one is not included in the benefit oflistening to music?A. Helping people calm them down and relax.B. Causing a lower heart.C. Causing respiratory rate.D. Helping old people sleep less in the daytime.DAbout six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table, I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation. At one point the woman asked, “So, how have you been?” And the boy—who could not have been more than seven or eight years old—replied, “Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed lately.”This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed” ,that is, in low spirits, until we were in high school.Undoubtedly a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to.Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it certainly is different. Childhood as it once was no longer exists. Why? Human development is depended not only on born biological states, but also on patterns of gaining social knowledge. Movement from one social role to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new social positions. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages; traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders. In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation(揭示)machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information to all viewers alike, whether they are children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more attractive moving pictures.Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control covering the social information which children will gain. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.51. According to the author, feeling depressed is________.A. a sure sign of a mental problem in a childB. a mental state present in all humans, includingchildrenC. something that can’t be avoided in children’smental developmentD. something hardly to be expected in a youngchild52. According to the author, that today’s childrenseem adultlike results from ______.A. the widespread influence of televisionB. the poor arrangement of teaching contentC. the fast pace of human scientific developmentD. the rising standard of living54. What does the author think of communicationthrough print for children?A. It enables children to gain more socialinformation.B. It develops children’s interest in reading andwriting.C. It helps children to read and write well.D. It can control what children are to learn.55. What does the author think of the change intoday’s children?A.
