The worst part for me was that because my eyesight was so bad, I couldn’t play sports very well. I didn't give up trying, though. I shot hoops every day。 And I studied harder.
Like most albinos, I had terrible eyesight, but the fact that I could hardly see didn't trouble me that much.
Kids would tease me, calling me “Whitey”。 People stared at me when I held reading material right at the tip of my nose so I could see it well enough to read. Even when I was eight or nine, movie theater clerks started asking me to pay adult prices because I “looked older”.

题型组合课时练选修8 Unit 1Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2021·西安高三检测)The 1920s was a decade of wealth, decadence (堕落) and social change. They were known as the Roaring Twenties, and the best place to experience this exciting time was New York City. But what was it really like?ProhibitionIn 1919,a new law in the US known as Prohibition made it illegal to buy and sell alcohol. But Prohibition didn't stop people drinking;it just drove the sale of strong alcoholic drink underground.Bootleggers(走私贩) waited off the coast of New York after dark and brought illegal alcohol into the city.JazzJazz was the music of New York in the 1920s.In fact, the decade is called Jazz Age.The best place to listen to this new form of music was the Cotton Club in Harlem. All the great jazz musicians played at the Cotton Club, including Louis Armstrong,Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington. Also,in 1924 George Gershwin composed the jazzinfluenced Rhapsody in Blue. The piece has been called “a musical portrait of New York〞and was used by Woody Allen in his film Manhattan.Art DecoArt Deco was the most popular style of the 1920s,with bright colors and geometric designs;it can be seen in the art, architecture and inside designs of the period.New York is full of Art Deco buildings, but the most famous ones are the Chrysler Building (built between 1928 and 1930) and the Empire State Building (built between 1930 and 1931).The Great DepressionOn 29th October,1929,the Roaring Twenties came to a dramatic end.On that day(known as “Black Tuesday〞),the US stock market crashed, causing the Great Depression. The economic downturn lasted ten years and affected most of the Westernworld.Unemployment in America reached 25% and the country didn't recover until after World War Ⅱ.【语篇解读】本文介绍了20世纪20年代的美国纽约。

I love to read before I go to sleep. It usually makes me feel calm. But a big part of this depends on what I read.I love to read Oor Wullie and The Broons.Very often I'm smiling before I go to sleep.I decide to write about this in a blog because I find that so many of us go to sleep with stress. Before we go to sleep,we may run over the day in our minds, and worry about tomorrow. We also may watch the news on TV,read the news on our smart phones or tablets,or even answer work emails. But the news is rarely proclaiming(宣告)all the good that's happening in the world and work emails make us feel that we're still at work. All these things may leave us a stressful sleep.Oor Wullie and The Broons are not the only things I ever read at night.I sometimes read novels but, with the odd exception,I mostly avoid anything that is too mentally taxing or stimulating late at night unless it's something that inspires me or is clearly helpful in my life. And even if I do read something mentally stimulating, when I feel myself getting tired I lay that book down and pick up a trusty old Oor Wullie or The Broons for the last 10 or 15 minutes.Doing this makes my mind quiet and helps ensure I get a peaceful night's sleep.Reading about Wullie or Maw and Paw Broon is like a comfort blanket for me.I'd suggest you find lighthearted reading as a comfort blanket at bedtime, especially if you find yourself stressed or depressed a lot of the time,or if you find difficulty winding at the end of a day.It is the thing that can gently turn your attention towards lightness and ease.If your material makes you laugh, then you may feel even better.Several studiesshow that laughter boosts happy chemicals in the brain,it strengthens the immune system,it's good for the heart, and it is most definitely good for mental health. It even helps us improve our relationships. And if you do happen to pick up a copy of Oor Wullie or The Broons,I hope you find it just as entertaining as I do.1.What can we learn about Oor Wullie and The Broons?A.They make people run over the past days.B.They are the best books to be read before people sleep.C.They are extremely popular with young people.D.They make people feel relaxed and happy.2.What can we know from the text?A.Oor Wullie and The Broons are the author's favorite books.B.A comfortable blanket makes people go to sleep easily.C.The author sometimes reads something about inspirations.D.Reading something stimulating at night helps get a peaceful sleep.3.What is Paragraph 6 mainly about?A.What material brings us laughter.B.How laughter affects our health.C.What benefits laughter brings to us.D.Why laughter is good for us.4.What's the main purpose of the text?A.To show the importance of reading before sleeping.B.To prove the importance of a good mood before sleeping.C.To tell us how to make ourselves stay relaxed before sleeping.D.To explain how to choose a book worthy to be read before sleeping.【解题导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。
2021高考英语一轮复习选修8Unit1Alandofdiversity课时作业含解析新人教版
Unit 1 A land of diversity课时作业Ⅰ.阅读(2020·云南省曲靖市第一中学高考复习质量监测(三))You may already know that more than a million years ago, glaciers, or vast blankets of moving ice, covered one third of the earth. You also may know tens of thousands of years ago, the glaciers started to melt, retreating to their current position in the Antarctic and Greenland. You may even know that glaciers also exist in all the world's great mountain regions. But do you know that glaciers cover about 6 billion square miles of the earth and store about 75 percent of the earth's fresh water?A glacier forms in a cold climate when a winter's snow does not completely melt during the following summer. Snow continues to accumulate and partially melt year after year. As the accumulated snow becomes heavier, the lower layers crushes under the weight and changes into ice. Over time, the mass of ice thickens and moves. The ice is either pulled slowly downhill by gravity—as in the valley glaciers found in the Alps, on the Alaskan coast, and in the Western United States—or forced outward in all directions by its own weight—as in the ice sheets and icecaps covering most of Greenland and Antarctica. During the glaciations (冰川作用), a glacier moves (usually about 3 feet per day). It picks up pieces of rock that cut and polish the land and carve out steep-side valleys. During deglaciation (冰消作用), a glacier withdraws and often leaves large deposits of sand and stones. The process of glaciation and deglaciation formed the Great Lakes in North American during the Ice Ages. Some scientists believe that ice ages similar to those of the past will occur, but they disagree on when this will happen. Other scientists think that global warming will occur instead, melting the glaciers and flooding areas as sea levels rise. No one knows for certain which event will occur, but neither predicts well for mankind.篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。
