While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his followers, “I am thirsty. Please get me some water from that lake there”.The follower walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that some people were washing clothes in the water and, right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing the lake right at the edge of it. As a result, the water became very muddy, very dirty. The follower thought, “How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink?!” So he came back and told the Buddha, “The water in there is very muddy. I don’t think it is fit to drink”.So, the Buddha said, let us take a little rest here by the tree. After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same follower to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The follower obediently (顺从地) went back to the lake. This time he found that the lake had absolutely clear water in it. The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to the Buddha. The Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the follower and said, “See, you let the water be and the mud settled down on its own. You got clear water. It didn’t require any effort”.Our mind is also like that. When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time and it will settle down on its own. You don’t have to put in any effort to calm it down. We can judge the best decisions of our life when we stay calm.24. Why did Buddha asked his follower to collect water?A. After checking just a few winter pictures of Iceland, I realized that the country, known as the land of fire and ice, during the cold months of the year could offer me experiences I had never had before. For sure you can’t miss the chance to go to Iceland in winter if your traveling wish list includes at least one of the crazy experiences Iceland can offer. Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean is a paradise ( 乐园 ) for all those who want to see the northern lights, experience cold weather conditions and put themselves in geothermal ( 地热的 ) baths while the snow is falling on their head. The best way to move around Iceland is with a rental car. Distances are huge and public transport in winter is not really common out of the major towns. As we wanted to be even more convenient we decided to rent a small camper ( 野营车 ). Sleeping and cooking in a camper saved us a lot of driving, money and gave us the chance to be always in the right place at the right time. There were also no locals and in many cases no tourist facilities (设备). For us, as we slept in a camper, it was easier. But for tourists traveling by normal cars it is necessary to check the opening times of hotels and restaurants as many of them run just from June to September. It is amazing to experience how the weather is changing in Iceland. However, Icelanders prefer to stay inside their houses. They have even no time to complain about the weather in December. All they care about is Christmas. They love to decorate their houses, sing Christmas songs and eat typical Christmas food.28. Why is Iceland famous as the land of fire and ice?A. Because tourists would like to play with fire on the ice.B. Because it is too dry to easily cause fire to happen.C. Because there exist hot springs and freezing ice.D. Because it is hot inside a house and cold outside.29. What did the author think of the rented camper?A. It was convenient but cost them more money.B. It was not only practical but also economical.C. It provided the best chance to see the new country.D. It was much faster than other public transport.30. What does the last paragraph imply?A. The joy of Christmas drives the freezing weather away.B. The Icelanders prefer to live with their family.C. December is the coldest month of the year.D. The Icelanders are always positive and stay outside.31.What does this passage most probably come from?A. A textbookB. A scientific reportC. A news reportD. A travel magazineDA research has shown that nearly 90 percent of traffic accidents are caused by human errors. So our aim is a fully autonomous car that gets rid of the cause of most accidents: the driver. Researcher Hod gson points out, “For safety, the faster you can remove humans, the better, even if there are unfortunately a few accidents from new causes. It s a question of balancing the number injured or killed by autonomous vehicles with the people whose lives are po tentially saved.”It’s an idea that Elon Musk, chief executive of electric car company Tesla Motors, has long believed. His company are determined to be the first to deliver a fully autonomous vehicle to consumers. Last year, Musk announced that Tesla’s 2017 goal was “to do an example drive of full autonomy all the way from LA to New York…and have the car park itself.”However, even Tesla admits that there are problems to overcome—the software needs further validation andthe appropriate regulatory approval needs to be in place. Indeed, recent crashes of Tesla vehicles and Google cars confirm that the software isn’t ready yet.The UK government appears committed to encouraging the development of autonomous vehicles. It’s supporting four city trials, publishing the Modem Transport Bill to reduce red tape around their introduction and adapting the legal system to take into account problems such as insurance liability when a human isn’t in control of a vehicle. The insurance industry is similarly eager to help increase autonomy in cars. As the Association of British Insurers (ABI) points out, “More than 90 percent of road accidents are caused by human error.” This costs motor insurers a shocking £20m per day in claims.32. What difficulty does the company Tesla Motors have?A. New inventions may cause more injuries and deaths.B. The company lacks confidence to make new creations.C. The law will go into effect by July 1, 2022.Starting school at 8:00 or 8:30 in the morning may not sound like too big of a change, but it could mean one more hour of sleep for students who used to start school at 7:30 or even earlier.“The e ffect of that one hour is something they will be feeling as 40-year-old adults,” Sumit Bhargava, a sleep expert at Stanford University told The New York Times. He said that not having enough sleep can affect students’ mental health and increase the risk of getting fat and diabetes (糖尿病).In the short run, students’ school performances should improve almost immediately. Kyla Wahlstrom, a researcher at the University of Minnesota’s College of Education, found that students who have enough sleep are more alert (机敏的) in class and get better grades. Some might say that urging students to go to bed earlier could have been a much easier solution than changing the school timetable across an entire state. But according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, teenagers go through biological changes when they enter puberty (青春期), which makes it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11: 00 pm. So when school starts at 8: 00 or earlier, they can hardly get the ideal 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep that experts suggest they need to do their best in the daytime. This is why when the new law came out, its author, Anthony Portantino, said, “Generations of children will come to appreciate ( 感激) this historic day and our governor for taking bold action.1.When should public high schools start classes according to the California’s new law?A.No earlier than 8:30 am..B.No earlier than 8:00 am.C.No earlier than 7:30 am.D.No earlier than 9:00 am.2.What can we learn from Bhargava’s words?A. Grant Stapleton, marketing sales director of Malloy Aeronautics, says the Hoverbike is able to get in and out of small spaces very quickly.“It can be moved across continents very quickly because it can be folded and packed,” he adds.Mr. Stapleton says safety was the company’s main concern. He says the designers solved the safety issue by using overlapping rotors(交叠式旋翼) to power the vehicle. The company is testing a fullsize prototype of the Hoverbike, which will most likely be used first by the police and emergency rescue teams. In New Zealand, the Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a fullsize prototype of its personal flying device, called Jetpack(喷气背包).It can fly for more than 30 minutes,up to 1,000 meters high and reach a speed of 74 kilometers per hour.Peter Coker is the CEO of Martin Aircraft Company. Although the journey took less than five minutes, it seemed like hours.I didn‟t know what if no one liked me or what if I did something wrong . On theway to the Johnson Hall for our first year group gathering ,I became nervous about meeting the rest of my class but I was excited as well .The first day seemed to go in an instant; I made lots of new friends and the activities we did in groups made it easier for us to know each other. The teachers seemed to be friendly and helpful. I hoped tomorrow would be as successful as today. That week I experienced so much: lots of different lessons in small groups, lectures delivered by well-known professors, exciting sport games, etc.In the following weeks, our class had a lot of things going on: we made a beach trip and held a sandcastle-building competition there. The competition was a bit terrible as we forgot to bring buckets and spades (铁锹) to build our sandcastle. We all enjoyed it, though. However, we made a great victory in the singing contest later in that same week. Now I can say that I enjoyed my time so much in Millfield Senior School, It offered so muchacademically as well as in other fields. The timetable was an improvement which allowed me to focus more on my favorite subjects. The extracurricular(课外的)activities were also wonderful. The highlight for me had been making the A team in hockey(曲棍球)。

I have just returned from a long bikeride to an old castle. It seems amazing that at my age I am stil l fit enough to cycle 20 kilometres in an afternoon. It’s my birth day in two weeks’ time and I’ll be 82 years old! I think my long and active life must be due to the healthy life I live. This brings me to the real reason for my letter, my dear gran dson. Your mother tells me that you started smoking some tim e ago and now you are finding it difficult to give it up. Believe me, I know how easy it is to begin smoking and how tough it i s to stop. You see, during adolescence I also smoked and be came addicted to cigarettes.By the way, did you know that this is because you become addicted in three different ways? First, you can become physi cally addicted to nicotine, which is one of the hundreds of che micals in cigarettes, This means that after a while your body b ecomes accustomed to having nicotine in it. So when the drug leaves your body, you get withdrawal symptoms. I remember feeling bad-tempered and sometimes even in pain. Secondly, you becom e addicted through habit. As you know, if you do the same thi ng over and over again, you begin to do it automatically. Lastl y, you can become mentally addicted. I believed I was happie r and more relaxed after having a cigarette, so I began to thin k that I could only feel good when I smoked. I was addicted inall three ways, so it was very difficult to quit. But I did finally m anage. When I was young, I didn’t know much about the harmful eff ects of smoking. I didn’t know, for example, that it could do ter rible damage to your heart and lungs or that it was more diffic ult for smoking couples to become pregnant(怀孕). I certainly di dn’t know their babies may have a smaller b irth weight or even be abnormal in some way. Neither did I kn ow that my cigarette smoke could affect the health of non-smokers. However, what I did know was that my girlfriend tho ught I smelt terrible. She said my breath and clothes smelt, an d that the ends of my fingers were turning yellow. She told me that she wouldn’t go out with me again unless I stopped! I als o noticed that I became breathless quickly, and that I wasn’t e njoying sport as much, When I was taken off the school footb all team because I was unfit, I knew it was time to quit smokin g.I am sending you some advice I found on the Internet. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would beimpossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Conseq uently, this text willdescribe only the most important ones. Starting from the sixth century AD.The Middle Ages(5th to the 15th century AD)During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to repre sent religiousthemes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical pi cture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created a feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that i deas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Gi otto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more real istic way.The Renaissance(15th to 16th century)During the Renaissance, new ideas and values gradually re placed those held in the Middle Ages. People began to conce ntrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanisticattitude to life.At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to posses s their own paintings, so they could decorate their superb pala ces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictur es of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as th eir activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first us ed by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the rules of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realis tic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at t his time, which made the colors used in paintings look richer a nd deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for wh ich this period is famous.Impressionism(late 19h to early 20th century)In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal, from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many p eople moved from the countryside to the new cities. There we re many new inventions and social changes also led to new p ainting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived a nd worked in Paris. The Impressionists were the first painters to work outdoors. T hey were eager to show how light and shadow fell on objects at different times of day. However, because natural light chan ges so quickly, the Impressionists had to paint quickly. Their p aintings were not as detailed as those of earlier painters. At fir st, many people disliked this style of painting and became ver y angry about it. They said that the painters were careless an d their paintings were ridiculous.Modern Art(29th century to today)At the time they were created, the Impressionist paintings w ere controversial, but today they are accepted as the beginnin g of what we call “modern art”. This is because the Impressio nists encouraged artists to look at their environment in new w ays. There are scores of modern art styles, but without the Imp ressionists, many of these painting styles might not exist. On t he one hand, some modern art is abstract; that is, the painter does not attempt to paint objects as we see them with our eye s, but instead concentrates n certain qualities of the object, us ing colour, line and shape to represent them. On the other ha nd, some paintings of modern art are so realistic that they loo k like photographs. These styles are so different. Who can pre dict what painting styles there will be in the future?32. In the Renaissance, painters__________________.A. painted religious scenes in a more realistic styleB. focused more on religion than on humansC. began to paint outdoorsD. returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art33. Many people hate the impressionists’ style of painting at fi rst because their paintings _____.A. very abstractB. very realisticC. the same as traditional style of paintingD. very ridicul ous34. ____ discovered how to make paintings look more real by using perspective.A. Giotto di Bondone.B. Masaccio.C. Claude Monet.D. Pablo Picasso35. When did people focus more on people and less on religio n?A. From 5th to 15th century AD.B. From 15th to 16th century.C. From late 19th to early 20th century.D. From 20th cent ury to today.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

He believed that ordinary people could become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things, and when they believe in themselves. They have the secret of success. If you look back on history, you’ll see many examples of ordinary people who have achieved extraordinary achievement. Many of the best known people, who have left their mark in the pages of history, failed many times on their climbing up the ladder. This is not a “history lesson”, so we won’t go into the specifics(详情), but there is no doubt that this is true. These people had something in common. They had self confidence as well as perseverance(毅力) in achieving their goals, and a sense of fulfillment. Most successful people have a “can do”attitude. While failure is always possible, they face failure bravely and approach life with an optimistic attitude.Above all y ou must have a goal clearly in mind. It’s like the parent asking their child what they want to be when they grow up. You, and only you, can decide where you want to go on your travel through life. But you can’t sit on the top of a hill and think pleasantly all day. You have tocome down to the real world and set your objectives. You must have a plan of action, and follow it. In other words, plan your work and work your plan. While things come up to delay you at times, y ou mustn’t give up your goals. You must be organized, and have a system in place to attain your objectives. If you are fired with enthusiastic ideas and allow them to control your thoughts you will find that new horizons will open. As long as your enthusiasm lasts, new opportunities also will. Don’t wait for the chances to beat a path to your door—they won’t. Search out and seek new opportunities. Allow yourself to think outside the boundaries. Remember, failure is merely a stepping stone on your road to success, and if you exercise positive thinking, you’ll reach your objective.32. According to the passage, what are the remarkable people in history in common?A. They believed in themselves and persevered.B. They all served the people heart and soul.C. They failed many times in their struggling.D. They all came from the ordinary families.33. According to Paragraph 3 the author advises us to ________ to realize our aim.A. work hard day and nightB. work in an organized teamC. work systematically or orderlyD. work by following others’ examples34.
