Once upon a time the colours of the world started to quarrel. All said they were the most important.

Blue said: “You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis①of life. The sky gives space and peace.
Yellow smiled: “You are all so serious. I bring laughter and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, and the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower②, the whole world starts to smile.
Orange started:“I am the colour of health and strength. I may be scarce（稀有的）, but I am precious（宝贵的）for I serve the needs of human life. I carry the most important vitamins.

Red shouted out: “I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood —life’s blood! I am the colour of danger and of bravery③. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire into the blood.
And so the colours went on boasting. Their quarreling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a lightening thunder④rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down. The colours crouched （蜷伏）down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort.
In the middle, rain began to speak:“You foolish colours, fighting among yourselves, each trying to dominate（支配）the rest. Don’t you know that you were each made for a special purpose, unique and different？Join hands with one another and com e home.”
Doing as they were told, the colours united ⑤and joined hands. The rain continued:“From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of colour as a reminder（暗示）that you can all live in peace.
