I chose to study engineering at a small liberal-arts (文科) university that doesn't even offer a major in electrical engineering. Obviously, this was not a practical choice; I came here for more noble reasons. I wanted a broad education that would provide me with flexibility and a value system to guide me in my career. I wanted to open my eyes and expand my vision by interacting
with people who weren't studying science or engineering. My parents, teachers and other adults
praised me for such a sensible choice. They told me I was wise and mature beyond my 18 years, and I believed them.
I headed off to college sure I was going to have an advantage over those students who went
to big engineering "factories" where they didn't care if you had values or were flexible. I was going to be a complete engineer: technical genius and sensitive humanist (人文学者)all in one.
Now I m not so sure. Somewhere along the way my noble ideals crashed into reality, as all noble ideals eventually do. After three years of struggling to balance math, physics and
engineering courses with liberal-arts courses, I have learned there are reasons why few engineering students try to reconcile (协调)engineering with liberal-arts courses in college.
The reality that has blocked my path to become the typical successful student is that engineering and the liberal arts simply don't mix as easily as I supposed in high school.
Individually they shape a person in very different ways. The struggle to reconcile the two fields of study is difficult.

第五部分写作
【高分范文】
With the development of our society, people have more choices on the styles of their living.
Some people enjoy living together with their parents after they have grown up, because they can
take good care of their parents.
Others, however, prefer to live independently. They cherish the idea to be independent of
their parents, seek more freedom and wish to have a place of their own, where they can do what
they like. Besides, they don't want to be overprotected by their parents
but long for chances to
face the society themselves.
As to me, I like an independent life style. By leading an independent life, I can train my
character and develop my own ability to deal with problems encountered in my life.

unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the
best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single bar through the centre of
the letter that indicates your choice.
Passage One
One of the most dangerous drugs for pregnant women to consume is alcohol. Because alcohol is delivered quickly into the blood and passes
quickly into the tissues and membranes , the human fetus (月台儿)is particularly vulnerable to its effects. In fact, the negative effects on a fetus are so pronounced that babies born after exposure to alcohol are said to be suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome.
As a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, the alcohol is passed into her bloodstream almost simultaneously. Moreover, because the bloodstream of a fetus is inextricably tied to that of the mother, the alcohol passes directly into the bloodstream of the fetus as well.
And, what is more, the concentration of alcohol in the fetus is exactly the same as in the mother. For the mother, this concentration is not a problem because her liver can remove one ounce of alcohol from her system per hour. However, the fetus9s liver is not completely developed.
The rate at which it is able to eliminate the alcohol from the blood of the fetus is much slower.
Eventually, the alcohol will be returned to the mother's system by passing across the placenta (胎盘),but this process is slow. By the time this takes place, major neurological damage may
have already occurred. Research has shown that little as one drink of alcohol can produce significant, irreversible damage to the fetus.
Babies born after exposure to alcohol generally exhibit facial distortion, inability to concentrate and difficulty in remembering. Simply speaking, it is imperative that pregnant women avoid alcohol.

Passage Two
Banks are not ordinarily prepared to pay out all accounts; they relied on depositors (储户) not to demand payment all at the same time. If depositors should come to fear that a bank is not sound, that it cannot pay off all its depositors, then that fear might cause all the depositors to appear on the same day. If they did, the bank could not pay all accounts. However, if they did not all appear at once, then there would always be funds to pay those who wanted their money when they wanted it. Mrs. Elsie Vaught has told us of a terrifying bank run that she experienced. One day in December of 1925, several banks failed to open in a city where Mrs.Vaught lived. The other banks anticipated a run the next day,
and so the officers of the bank in which Mrs. Vaught worked as a teller had enough funds on hand to pay off as many depositors as might apply. The officers simply instructed the tellers to pay on demand. Next morning a crowd gathered
in the bank and on the sidewalk outside. The length of the line convinced many that the bank
could not pay off everyone. People began to push and then to fight for places near the
tcllcrs, windows. Clothing was tom and limbs broken, but the jam continued for hours. The power
of the panic atmosphere is evident in the fact that two tellers, though they knew that the bank was
sound and could pay out all depositors, nevertheless withdrew the funds in their own
accounts. Mrs.Vaught says that she had difficulty restraining herself from doing the same.

Passage Three
Every day 25 million U.S. children ride school buses. The safety record for these buses is much better than for passenger cars; but nevertheless, about 1() children are killed each year riding on large school buses, and nearly four times that number are killed outside buses in the loading zones. By and large, however, the nation's school children are transported to and from school safely.
Even though the number of school bus casualties (伤亡事故)is not large, the safety of children is always of intense public concern. While everyone wants to see children transported safely,
people are divided about what needs to be done 一particularly whether seat belts should be mandatory (强制性的).
Proponents of seat belts on school buses—many of them parents and medical organizations一argue that seat belts are necessary not only to reduce fatality and injury, but also to teach children
lessons about the importance of using them routinely in any moving vehicle. A side benefit,
proponents point out, is those seat belts help keep children in their seats, away from the bus driver.
Opponents of seat belt installation suggest that children are already well protected by the school buses that adhere to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations(NHTSA) safety requirements set in 1977. They also believe that many children won, t wear seat belts anyway and
that they may damage the belts or use them as weapons to hurt other children.
A new Research council report on school bus safety suggests that there are alternate safety
devices and procedures that may be more effective and less expensive. For example, the study committee suggested that raising seat backs four inches may have the same safety effectiveness as seat belts.
The report sponsored by the Department of Transportation at the request of Congress,
reviews seat belts extensively while taking a broader look at safety in and around school buses.

C.an alternate safety device raising seat backs four inches may be taken into consideration
D.The Department of Transportation may either take the idea of seat belts or other measures when

25.The title below which best expresses the idea of the passage is
“()
A.Making School Buses Even Safer for Children

Passage Four
Engineering students are supposed to be examples of practicality and rationality, but when it comes to my college education I am an idealist and a fool. In high school I wanted to be an electrical engineer and, of course, any sensible student with my aims would have chosen a college with a large engineering department, famous reputation and lots of good labs and research equipment. But that* s not what I did.。
