Every country in the world has a flag. A flag is a piece of cloth with a picture or pattern(图案) on it.
6
The flag is a symbol that stands for the country. It is a custom in many places for people to fly or hang a flag. The flag tells something about the country and its culture. This may be about its land, its history, or the things that the people do there.
Many flags have patterns of stripes(条纹). The flag of Italy has a green stripe, a white stripe and a red stripe. Each stripe tells something about Italy. The white stripe is symbol of Italy’s snowy mountains. Some flags show pictures. The flag of Canada has a picture of a red maple leaf, which is a symbol of the maple trees in Canada. The Mexican flag has both a pattern of stripes and a picture. The picture shows an eagle eating a snake. This picture comes from a very old Mexican story.
A flag may also tell about a country’s past. The American flag is called the
Stars and Stripes. It has
pattern of fifty stars and thirteen stripes. The fifty stars are a symbol of the fifty states in the country, and the thirteen stripes are a symbol of the country’s first thirteen colonies(殖民地).
However, a flag may be a symbol of a group, a school, or an event like the
Olympics. The flag of the
Olympics shows five rings of different colors that connect. Each ring is a symbol for a part of the world that joins in the Olympics. The Red Cross is group that helps people who are in trouble. If a person sees the Red Cross flag, which has a red cross against a white background, he knows he can ask for help. People may fly a flag as a custom on a holiday. Children’s Day in Japan is a holiday when the country wishes for children’s happiness. It is a custom on this day to fly a flag with a picture of a fish.
Flags are also used as a way to talk. A flag with patterns can be very helpful to people who do not speak
the same language. Sailors on ships use flags to talk to sailors on other ships. They may not speak the same language, but they know what the patterns mean. A flag with blue and white squares says “no”. A flag with five stripes that are blue, white, and red says “yes”.

I used to watch her from my kitchen window. She seemed so 75 when she
made her way
through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would often watch the kids as they played during break. I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could. I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone.
One day I asked her why she practiced so much. She said immediately, “I want to go to college. The
only way I can go is to get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. I want to be the best. My Daddy tells me 76 the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.” Well, I had to give it to her—she
was so determined. I watched her through those junior high years and into high school. Every week, she led her school team to 77 .
One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head in her arms. I walked across the street and
8
sat down in the cool grass beside her. 78 I asked what was wrong. “Oh, I am just not tall enough.”
came a soft reply, ” The coach told her that at 5’5” she would probably never get to play for a top ranked team—much less offered a scholarship—so she should stop 79 college. I could feel her disappointment. I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet. She told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just did not understand the power of a dream. He told her that if she truly wanted
a scholarship and that nothing could stop her from getting it except one thing — her own 80 .
The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, she was
offered a scholarship and on the college team. She was going to get the college education that she had looked forward to.

Here is a letter from Obama, the previous USA president to his daughters.
Dear Malia and Sasha,
I know that you’ve both had a lot of fun these last two years, going to picnics,
parades and state fairs,
eating all sorts of junk food, your mother and I p 81 shouldn’t have let you eat. But I also know that it hasn’t always been easy for you and Mom. And today I want to tell you a little more about w 82 I decided to take our family on this journey.
When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me——about how I’d make
my way in the world, become s 83 , and achieve the things I want. But then the two
of you came into my world, all my big plans for myself didn’t seem so important
anymore. I soon found that the g 84 joy in my life was the joy I saw you. And I
realized, in the world, girls, that’s the reason for running for President: because of what
I want for you and for every child in the nation.
9
I want all our children to go to school worthy of their potential——schools that
challenge them, inspire
them; I want them to have the c 85 to go to university—even if their parents aren’t rich. And I want
them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own kids and retire with dignity.
Sometimes we have to send our young people into war and other dangerous
situations to protect our
country——but when we do, I want to make sure that it is only for a very good reason——we try our best to solve our differences(分歧) with others p 86 , and that we do everything possible to keep our people safe.
I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am
thankful every day for
the patience, confidence, grace, understanding and s 87 from you, your mom and I prepare to start our new life together in the White House.
Love,
Dad
