二、阅读理解(3篇文章,15题每题2分,共30分)。
Passage 1
When you refer to your brain, you should probably say "brains". Most modem scientists studying the brain have concluded that there are three major parts of our brain, that each is separate from the others, and that each has its own functions and distinctive processes. Brain 1 includes the spinal cord, the medulla (髓)-which sits directly atop the cord- and the middle section of the brain. It includes the controls for involuntary functions like breathing and digestion, along with the nerves necessary for reproduction. The structure of the human brain 1 is little different from the structures of the brains of mammals and reptiles (爬行动物) - Brain 1 is apparently responsible both for aggressive and social behavior.
Brain 2 is an area surrounding brain 1. In this second brain are the various glands located in the brain, such as the pituitary(脑垂体) and amygdala (扁桃体). Scientists studying brain 2 are convinced that human emotion-s such as excitement, fear, and love arc centered here, as well as the senses of taste and smell. Memory and learning are also controlled by brain 2. Electrical charges applied to this section of the brain causes seizures and psychotic behavior.
Brain 3 is the neocortex, the thick covering that surrounds the top and side portions of the brain. This is the "gray matter" we often think of when we speak, of the brain. Only the higher orders of animals have brain 3, and none is as highly developed as the human neocortex- Brain 3 sends information from the other two brain- to body and receives data from the body- It is apparently brain 3 that makes us fully human. Brain 3 allows us to stand erect, to plan and anticipate the future, to see, to speak, to write, to use symbols and tools, and to remember. Brain 3 apparently also acts as a unifying control of the other two Brains. As scientists continue to study the brain, they discover specific areas
that control particular functions of the body and particular emotions. It is interesting to speculate about the future of the old idea of "the mind", As we learn more about our three brains, will we be more or less awed by our own complexity?

2. Excitement, fear, and love are centered in ____.
A. the neocortex
B. the pituitary
C. Brain 2
D. the medulla
3. "Gray matter" is a synonym for ____.
A. the amygadala
B. the medulla
C. the spinal cord
D. the neocortex
4. We can conclude from this passage that ____.
A. only humans have the neocortex section of the brain
B.we know very little about the brain
C.brain 3 is all we need to survive
D.we still have a lot to learn about the brain
5. The passage suggests ______.
A.the human being is the only animal that has emotions
B."mind control" will be possible very soon
C.research on the human brain is one of the roost important types of re-
search scientists are engaged in

Passage 2
America is the land of the automobile. This country has only 6 percent of the world's population but 46 percent of the world's cars. Right now, there are 97 million privately owned cars consuming 75 billion gallons of gasoline and traveling an estimated 1 .000 billion miles a year. The figures also affirm some" thing we know every time we refill our gasoline tank. The automobile is a very thirsty piece of technology. Of the total petroleum supply in the United States, 30 percent goes to quench that thirst. Every year for each passenger car, about 800 gallons of gasoline are consumed.
Other aspects of our commitment to the automobile also bear mentioning
here. It takes a great deal of energy to manufacture one automobile - about 150 million BTU's of energy. This is equivalent to 1,200 gallons, enough 10 runs car for about 1,600 miles. We expend energy in the process of shipping cars from factories to showrooms, displaying them for sale and making replacement parts for repairs. One out of six jobs in the nations is associated with the automobile business. About two gallons of gasoline are consumed in the process of making every ten gallons that are pumped into an automobile's tank.
Building highways and parking lots has used up much of our land. It has been estimated that we have paved over 21,000 square miles of this country's surface, most of it to accommodate the automobile. The automobile is also the largest contributor to our nation's air pollution problem and a very serious one because most of its pollutants are emitted in our large metropolitan areas.
Aside form the greet impact that would occur if everyone seriously practiced conservation, one should stop and think about his own casual use of the automobile. There are numerous situations where better planning and awareness could really make a difference in energy savings and dollars. Because the automobile uses the largest percentage of energy in an average American family's energy budget and almost half of the dollars, the impetus for savings is tremendous.
6. According to the author, most people realize that _____.
A.great efforts have been made to solve the energy problem
B.the automobile uses large amounts of gasoline
C.car pools help to solve some of the energy problem
D.alternate sources of energy must be found
7. Most people do not realize that _______.
A.oil resources could someday run out
B.automobile speed lowers energy efficiency
C.gasoline is more expensive than home heating oil
D.the manufacture of the automobile requires much energy
8. The author implies that _______.
A.Americans waste energy
B.Americans have to import a great quantity of gas each year
C.anti-pollution devices on automobiles are not effective
D.small cars use energy efficiently
9. The author suggests that energy savings could be realized ________.
A.with forceful limitation of the use of the automobile
B.with better arrangement and consciousness
C.with better educational programs and planning techniques
D.with more effective transportation of consumer goods
10.The best title for the passage might be ____________.
A.Automobile -- America's Thirsty Machine
B.Energy Problems
C.Importance of Energy Conservation
D. America’s Annual Consumption of Gas
Passage 3
For several years, scientists have been testing a substance called interferon (干扰素), a potential wonder drug that is proving to be effective in treating a variety of ailments, including virus infections, bacteria infections, and tumors, To date, the new drug has provoked no negative reaction of sufficient significance to discourage its use. But in spite of its success, last year only one gram was produced in the entire world.
The reason for the scarcity lies in the structure of interferon. A species of specific protein, the interferon produced from one animal species cannot be used in treating another animal species. In other words, to treat human beings, only interferon produced by human beings may be used. The drug is produced by infecting white blood cells with a virus. Fortunately, it is so potent that the amount given each patient per injection is very small.
Unlike antibiotics, interferon does not attack germs directly. Instead, it makes unaffected cells resistant to infection, and prevents the multiplication of viruses within cells.
As you might conclude, one of the most dramatic uses of interferon has been in the treatment of cancer. Dr. Hans Strander, research physician at Sweden's famous Karolinska Institute, has treated more than one hundred cancer patients with the new drug. Among a group of selected patients who had under-gone surgical procedures for advanced cancer, half were given conventional treatments and the other half were given interferon. The survival rate over a three-year period was 70 percent among those who were treated with interferon as compared with only 10 to 30 percent among those who had received the conventional treatments.
In the United Slates, a large-scale project supported by the American Cancer Society is now underway. H the experiment is successful, interferon could become one of the greatest medical discoveries of our time.
11. In what does interferon differ from antibiotics?
A.Interferon has serious side effects, whereas antibiotics do not.
B.Interferon is available in large supply, whereas antibiotics are not.
C.Antibiotics are very potent, while interferon is not.
D, Antibiotics kill germs by attacking them directly, while interferon does not.
12. What effect does interferon have on infection?
A.It provokes a negative reaction.
B.It keeps healthy cells from becoming infected.
C.It causes healthy cells to grow.
D.It attacks viruses.
13. Interferon is produced by
A.infecting viruses, bacteria, and tumors with a drug.
B.infecting proteins with a virus.
C.infecting while blood cells with a virus.
D.infecting viruses with proteins.
14. Interferon has not been widely used because it is
A.still very dangerous.
B.not yet available in the United Slates.
C.difficult to produce in large quantities.
D.not effective for human beings.
15. Slate the results of Dr. Strander's experiments with interferon.
A.Half of the patients who received interferon reached favorably.
B.At the end of three years, all of the patients who had not received
interferon had died.
C.Most of the patients who received interferon also needed conventional
treatments.
D.70 percent among patients who were treated with interferon survived.

Dear Xiao Wang:
I am very glad to know that you are soon coming to Beijing to join me in the summer holiday. I have been looking forward to your arrival.
Since you can stay in Beijing only for a week, I am afraid you will have a tight schedule for visiting the numerous places of historic interest. My suggestion is that you first visit some famous places that you have the greatest interest in. such as the Palace Museum, the Summer Place, the Great Wall; then you can visit those places you think less important. I believe this kind of arrangement will make you have enough time to appreciate what you really want to see.
Moreover, if you really want to be a good traveler, I advise you to read some introductory books to these places before you come to see them with your own eyes. With more knowledge about these places, you will have a better understanding of Chinese history and culture.
I am eager to meet you soon in Beijing. Wish you in advance a pleasant trip to Beijing.
Best wishes
Yours ever
Zhang Ying。
