Just a few years out of law school, I decided that I wanted to write fictions. The only thing I had ever published before was a law-review article. I had made great efforts to write when I came home at night after work, but I was too tired. I decided to quit my job.
I began my new life on a February morning. I sat down at my kitchen table at 7:30 am and made a resolution. Every day I would write until lunchtime. Then I would lie down on the floor for 20 minutes to rest my mind. After that, I would return to work for a few more hours.
In my first year, I sold two stories. Then I wrote a novel, but I thought it wasn't good enough, so I ended up putting it in a drawer. My second novel, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, was published to glowing reviews and received the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction.
My success sounds like a familiar story, but actually it was far from sudden. I quit my job, and for every story I published in those years, I had at least 30 rejections. The novel that I put away in the drawer took my four years. My breakthrough came in 2006, 18 years after I first sat down to write at my kitchen table.
Sometimes genius (天才) is just the thing that comes out after 20 years of working at your kitchen. Also, doing something truly creative requires the energy of youth. Orson Welles made his masterpiece, Citizen Kan, at 25. T. S. Eliot wrote The Love Song of J. Afred Prufrock at 23.
(1)When did the author decide to devote himself to writing fictions?
A. When he was tired from his work.
B. Straight after graduation from law school.
C. On being informed his law-review article came out.
D. When his hobby was disturbed by his work.
(2)We can infer from the second paragraph that the author .
A. led a wealthy life
B. arranged his life reasonably
C. was too diligent to relax himself
D. remained single
(3)What does the author mainly intend to tell us in this passage?
A. Failure is the mother of success.
B. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
C. It is never too old to learn.
D. It is the first step that costs troublesome.
(4)Why did the author give the example of Orson Welles and T. S. Eliot?
A. To make a comparison between them and himself.
B. To show creativity needs energy and efforts.
C. To persuade the readers of their great talents.
D. To recommend their two masterpieces.【答案】(1)D
(2)B
(3)A
(4)B

It has been discovered that after the age of sixteen, the number of our brain cells begins to decrease at a speed of several million a year. They simply die off. In certain types of activity, the human brain is at its highest point in the early twenties, when it has collected enough information to be able to use the vast number of cells freely in the most effective way. Pure mathematics is one of the fields in which this happens, and we know that Albert Einstein made all his world-shaking discoveries between the age of about 20 and 25, and spent the rest of his life tidying them up and arranging them.
But in certain other types of activity (of which being an author is perhaps one), experience is more important than sharpness of brain, and there one usually finds that a person reaches his or her peak much later in life.
Besides sharpness of brain and experience, here is another thing that is very important, and that is wisdom. One can have a very quick, inventive brain and plenty of experience, but if one uses these foolishly, one harms both oneself and others. Wisdom does not always come with age ——there are plenty of foolish middle-aged people about ——but the average person tends to learn wisdom as he gets older, usually by making painful of embarrassing mistakes. Leaning to be wise is basically learning what is not possible; and what is possible but so difficult that it is not worth all the trouble one has to go through to get there. Mostly, it is learning about human nature; how real people behave and react, as against how one would like them to behave and react. One can read and hear lot of idealistic stuff about how to make the world a better place, which would be found if it was based on an accurate observation of human nature, but which is
basically a waste of time because it is not.
(1)According to the writer, the great discoveries made by Albert Einstein were mainly a result in________.
A.years of hard work
B.sharpness of the brain
C.rich experience
D.his deep understanding of the nature
(2)Some people achieve success much later in life because .
A.their work often requires much experience
B.they do not have a chance to show their talents
C.they have to learn lessons from failures
D.they fail to realize earlier the importance of hard work
(3)The importance of wisdom lies in the fact that .
A.it helps to avoid various mistakes
B.it contributes to one's creativity
C.it encourages one to go forward in face of difficulty
D.it provides the right direction of efforts
(4)The writer came to believe that .
A.it is always a waste of time to make plans about the future
B.it is human nature to make attempts on what looks impossible
C.one should always challenge the impossible to push the society forward
D.one has to use wisdom in deciding what is the best thing to do
【答案】(1)B
(2)A
(3)D
(4)D

根据第一段“It has been discovered that after the age of sixte en, the number of our brain cells begins to decrease at a speed of several million a year. They simply die off. In certain types of activity, the human brain is at its highest point in the early twenties, ... and we know that Albert Einstein made all his world-shaking discoveries between the age of about 20 and 25, and spent the rest of his life tidying them up and arranging them.”

But in certain other types of activity (of which being an
author is perhaps one), experience is more important than sharpness of brain, and there one usually finds that a pers on reaches his or her peak much later in life.”

故选A。

根据第三段中的“Besides sharpness of brain and experience, here is another thing that is very important, and that is wisdom.... Leaning to be wise is basically learning what is not possible; and what is possible but so difficult that it is not worth all the trouble one has to go through to get there. Mostly, it is learning about human nature;how real people behave and react, as against how one would like them to behave and react.”

根据最后一段中的“Leaning to be wise is basically learning what is not possible;and what is possible but so difficult that it is not worth all the trouble one has to go through to get there. Mostly, it is learning about human nature;how real people behave and react, as against how one would like them to behave and react. One can read and hear lot of idealistic stuff about how to make the world a better place, which would be found if it was based on an accurate observation of human nature,”成为智者,要大体上知道什么是不可能的。

On February 6, Space X, a private US aerospace company owned by Elon Musk, has successfully launched its new Falcon Heavy spacecraft, making it the world's most powerful rocket.
Falcon Heavy is the largest rocket since the retirement of NASA's Saturn V, which was used for the Moon missio ns in the 1970s. “Falcon Heavy can launch about 64 tonnes into low Earth orbit-that's almost three times more than the current running biggest launch vehicle, Delta IV Heavy, ”Imperial College astrophysicist David Clements told AI Jazeera. According to Spa ce X, Falcon Heavy can lift into orbit a mass greater than a 737 jet loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel.
The rocket was designed with the idea of earning humans into space and opening the possibility of flying missions with people to the Moon and even Mars. For its first voyage, it carried Musk's $ 100,000 cherry-red Tesla sports car and a fake space-suited human model fixed
in the driver's seat. Musk joked that “it may be discovered by some future alien race”.
Falcon Heavy went into space on its last flight on February 6. The launch took place at NASA's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Kennedy Space Center in the US state of Florida, the spot also used for the Apollo 11 Moon mission and several space shuttle launches. It was delayed by several hours because of high winds in the upper atmosphere. Minutes after take-off, the two outer boosters (助推器) landed at the nearby Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
Space X announced plans to eventually use Falcon Heavy to launch two paying space tourists on a trip around the Moon. However, Musk said he will probably reserve that mission for another launch system, the BFR. Recently, Space X scheduled to launch a Falcon 9 rocket for NASA's TESS mission on March 20, 2018. It is reported that Space X is scheduled to complete 30 independent launch missions in 2018, at least half of which will use Falcon 9.
(1)Which of the following can function as a rocket?
A. A 737 jet.
B. Tesla.
C. Saturn V.
D. Space X.
(2)What do we know about Falcon Heavy from the text?
A. It was the latest rocket in the world.
B. It is of the same load as a 737 jet.
C. It is to be found by the creatures in the outer space.
D. It was launched at the same place for the Apollo 11 mission.
(3)What delayed the launch of Falcon Heavy?
A. Weather condition.
B. Program error.
C. Equipment failure.
D. Deliberate damage.(4)What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The BFR will be completed in 2018.
B. The vehicle to launch space tourists is unknown.
C. Tourists will be sent into space by Falcon 9.
D. Falcon 9 will take 15 launch missions.
【答案】(1)C
(2)D
(3)A
(4)B

The Maltese Islands are rich in Neolithic (新石器时代的) sites. Ggantija in Gozo, Tarxien, and the Hagar Qim/Mnajdra Complex here on Malta's south coast are perhaps the most well-known. These piles of stones are some of the earliest known manmade structures in the world. They are showing their age a bit but what would you expect for buildings that are five and a half thousand years old. My house was built in the year 2000 and is already in bad condition round the edges. These temples are older than the pyramids!
In my opinion the temples are best seen after the visitors have left. Come with me for a late afternoon walk down the hill past Hagar Qim towards the Mnajdra Complex. There are chain link fences around the temples now but we can ignore those and try to image why Maltas earliest people went to the trouble of building these structures on this windy and poor hillside.
Of course the temples would have looked rather different when they were constructed. They may have been decorated with pigments and possibly even roofed with animal skins or other materials. Who knows? We do know that they were changed and added to over a 1,000 - year period or so.
Getting to Mnajdra and Hagar Qim is easiest if you have a car. Or if you don't mind a hike, you could get a bus to Qrendi(3 km away) or Zurrieq (5 km away) and walk from there. Warning: although the distances are not too great, walking several kilometers in the Maltese sun can be very hard and possibly dangerous. Take water and sunscreen.
(1)What makes the writer wonder about the temples?
A. Their history.
B. Their appearance.
C. How they were built.
D. When they were built.(2)What are we aware of about the construction of the temples?
A. They have been transformed.
B. They look the same as before.
C. They were carefully designed.
D. They are not what they used to be.
(3)How can we admire the sites getting least sunburn?
A. By hiking there.
B. By riding a car.
C. By taking water.
D. By taking a bus.(4)Where can we possibly find this article?
A. In a political speech.
B. In a historical fiction.
C. Ina travel magazine.
D. In a geography text book.
【答案】(1)B
(2)D
(3)B
(4)C

Of course the temples would have looked rather different when they were constructed….Who knows? We do know that they were changed and added to over a 1,000 - year period or so.

We do know that they were changed and added to over a 1,000 - year period or so.

What are we aware of about the construction of the temples? We do know that they were changed and added to over a 1,000 - year period or sochanged and added to over a 1,000 - year period or so.☞ D 选项They are not what they used to be.

如果不介意走一会的话,你可以乘公共汽车到Qrendi(3公里)或Zurrieq(5公里),然后从那里步行。

As kids, my friends and I spent a lot of time out in the woods. "The woods" was our part-time address, destination, purpose, and excuse. If I went to a friend's house and found him not at home, his mother might say, "Oh, he's out in the woods," with a tone (语气) of airy acceptance.
It's similar to the tone people sometimes use now a days to tell me that someone I'm looking for
is on the golf course or at the gym, or even "away from his desk". For us ten-year-olds, "being out
in the woods" was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.
We sometimes told ourselves that what we were doing in the woods was exploring (探索). Exploring was a more popular idea back then than it is today. History seemed to be mostly about explorers. Our explorations, though seemed to have less system than the historic kind something usually came up along the way. Say we stayed in the woods, throwing rocks, shooting frogs, picking blackberries, digging in what we were briefly persuaded was an Indian burial mound.
Often we got "lost" and had to climb a tree to find out where we were. If you read a story in which someone does that successfully, be skeptical; the topmost branches are usually too skinny
to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees. There were four or five trees that we visited regularly-tall beeches easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.
It was in a tree, too, that our days of fooling around in the woods came to an end. By then some of us has reached seventh grade and had begun the rough ride of adolescence (青春期). In March, the month when we usually took to the woods again after winter, two friends and I set out to go exploring. We climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree. Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.
(1)The author and his friends were often out in the woods to .
A. spend their free time
B. play golf and other sports
C. avoid doing their schoolwork
D. keep away from their parents
(2)What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. The activities in the woods were well planned.
B. Human history is not the result of exploration.
C. Exploration should be a systematic activity.
D. The author explored in the woods aimlessly (3)The underlined word "skeptical" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to .
A. calm
B. doubtful
C. serious
D. optimistic
(4)The reason why we visited the four or five trees regularly is the following except that .
A. they were tall beeches
B. they were easy to climb
C. they were not hi to climb
D. they were comfortable to sit in
(5)How does the author feel about his childhood?
A. Happy but short.
B. Lonely but memorable.
C. Boring and meaningless.
D. Long and unforgettable.
【答案】(1)A
(2)D
(3)B
(4)C
(5)A

根据第一段中的“For us ten-year-olds, “being out in the woods” was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.”

故选A。

根据第二段中的“Our explorations, though seemed to have less system than the historic kind something usually came up along the way. ”可知,但是我们的探索与历史上的相比不够系统,有些东西通常都是在沿途中偶然出现的,因此推断作者探索是无目的的。

故选D。

(3)考查词义猜测。

根据第三段中的“the topmost branches are usually too skinny to hold weight, and we could never climb high enough to see anything except other trees.”

根据第三段中的“There were four or five trees that we visited regularly-tall beeches easy to climb and comfortable to sit in.”

根据第一段中的“ For us ten-year-olds, ‘being out in the woods” was just an excuse to do whatever we feel like for a while.’”可知,作者和小伙伴们在“树林”里很快乐;以及最后一段中的“We climbed a tree, and all of a sudden it occurred to all three of us at the same time that we really were rather big to be up in a tree. Soon there would be the spring dances on Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria.”

故选A。

There's a song by the great Jamaican singer Bob Marley called So Much Trouble In The World. Marley understood that part of the reason why there are so many problems in the world is the lack of tolerance between people. The UN understands this too --- that's why it made Nov 16th "International Day for Tolerance".
But first of all, what is tolerance? According to French philosopher Voltaire, tolerance "s the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty (脆弱) and error; let us pardon each
other's fool --- that is the first law of nature."
Very often, people don't realize that they're intolerant. This is because intolerance has a lot to do with ignorance. For example, the UN's campaign is in part about the treatment of females by males. But often, the behavior of men toward women is intolerant because men don't put themselves in the shoes of women.
It's worth thinking a little about the words "tolerance" and "intolerance". Are they the best words to describe the evils of which we're speaking here? To agree to be "tolerant" of someone isn't necessarily a very respectful thing. When someone is tolerated, it implies that there's something wrong with them.
Still, what Voltaire said stands: We humans are not perfect and this weakness is something that we all share. That's the reason we should be tolerant. It's a little like generosity. We can give things to another person, and we can also give our forgiveness.

根据第一段中的“Ma rley understood that part of the reason why there are so many problems in the world is the lack of tolerance between people. The UN understands this too --- that's why it made Nov 16th 'International Day for Tolerance'.”

故选A。

根据第三段中的“But often, the behavior of men toward women is intolerant because men don't put themselves in the shoes of women.”

根据倒数第二段中的“Are they the best words to describe the ev ils of which we're speaking here? To agree to be 'tolerant' of someone isn't necessarily a very respectful thing. When someone is tolerated, it implies that there's something wrong with them.”

根据最后一段中的“It's a little like generosity. We can give things to another person, and we can also give our forgiveness.”

So many of us hold on to little resentments that may have come from an argument, a misunderstanding, or some other painful event. Stubbornly, we wait for someone else to reach out to us—believing this is the only way we can forgive or rekindle a friendship or family relationship.
An acquaintance of mine, whose health isn't very good, recently told me that she hadn't spoken to her son in almost three years. She said that she and her son had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn't speak to him again unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the one to reach out, she resisted initially and said, "I can't do that. He's the one who should apologize." She was literally willing to die before reaching out to her only son. After a little gentle encouragement, however, she did decide to be the first one to reach out. To her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness to call and offered an apology of his own. As is usually the case when someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins.
Whenever we hold on to our anger, we turn "small stuff" into really "big stuff" in our minds. We start to believe that our positions are more important than our happiness. They are not. If you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is almost never more important than allowing yourself to be happy. The way to be happy is to let go, and reach out. Let other people be right. This doesn't mean that you're wrong. Everything will be fine. You'll experience the peace of letting go, as well as the joy of letting others be right.
You'll also notice that, as you reach out and let others be "right," they will become less defensive and more loving toward you. They might even reach back. But if for some reason they don't, that's okay too. You'll have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world, and certainly you'll be more peaceful yourself.
(1)The underlined word "rekindle" in Paragraph 1 probably means "____________". A. recover B. develop C. accept D. replace。
