Books have great power. Between their pages, readers can be transported to anywhere imaginable and become just about anyone… or anything. Unfortunately, many children all over the world don’t have access to books!
For several years till now, Maria Keller, a 14-year-old girl from Minneapolis, Minnesota, has been changing that fact. When she was 8 years old, Maria already loved reading. She also noticed that some of her classmates didn’t read as much as she did. When she asked her mother why that could be. Her mother said that they might not be able to afford books. Maria had never thought of this. She could not believe that some children might not have bedtime stories read to them. She became determined to change this.
With her mother’s help, Maria created Read Indeed. Read In deed is a non-profit organization aiming to collect and distribute books to children in need. During the early stages of Read Indeed, Maria set the goal to collect and distribute 1 million books by the time she is 18. It didn’t take that long for her to reach that goal!
Today, at age 14, she has collected over 1.8 million books and has shipped them to many states and countries around the world. She says,“I can not live without books. As I continue my mission, I have learned that the number of kids who have no books is in the hundreds of millions. So I just
can’t give up, even after reaching my original goal of 1 million books distributed.”
She’s recently set a new goal: to distribute books to kids in need in every state in the United States, and every country in the world. She keeps track of her progress on a large map at the warehouse where she stores and sorts books. Maria believes that she can get support from even more people!

What is better for you? Exercising in the great outdoors, or signing up for a gym? To try and find out, the Guardian was invited to spend a month working with fitness and sports psychology experts at Bath University and the National Trust. The concept was that participants---- including me---- would spend alternate weeks exercising in a gym and on National Trust land.
The first week was spent on the exercise bikes, rowing machines and treadmills(跑步机) in a gym at Bath. Getting started at the gym was easy. There was a nice community too. People are gently teasing and encouraging each other.
On the downside, it was hard to ignore the background noise of dance and pop music. And all the machines faced screens showing music videos, rolling news and sports channels. Not a place to get away from it all.
So it was a relief in week two to head for the hills of Dyrham, a National Trust parkland full of birds and deer.
Weeks three and four followed the same pattern. The diaries I had kept, questionnairies I had filled in, and heart monitors I had worn, were then analysed by scientists from Bath University.
The findings surprise me a bit. The heart monitors showed I had consumed a similar amount of energy whether exercising in the gym or outdoors. But fitness expert Martyn Standage was most interested in the fact that on the days when my exercise had been done outside, I used more energy through the rest of the day. Standage said this fitted with studies that suggest working out in the outdoors leads to a greater feeling of vitality(活力).
Jo Barton, who specialises in studying outdoor exercise, suggested that working out in the fresh air could be “life-changing”. “Exercising in nature lifts your mood and increases your self-respect,” she said.
My verdict? It was more fun outside but sometimes more convenient to get to the gym. A bit of both may be the way forward.

A. concern

I’d like to share a little story with you about something that happened when I was four. I remember it clearly. Our loving family dog was nearing the end of his life. My father picked him up and put him in a little bed we had made for him. Our dog, my companion, whom we had cared for, bit my father when he attempted to help him. How could he? Why? I couldn’t understand it. I didn’t like him anymore.
I hadn’t thought about that story for a long time b ut something that happened last week brought it back to me. I went to speak with a friend. When I knocked on the door, I met in an instant an angry look and a few harsh(尖刻的)words. When the door was slammed(砰地关上)in my face, I stood there shocked, and in a rush, I was reminded of my dog bit my father 20 years ago or so. What brought that story back was that same feeling of betrayal.
Both stories taught me something the next day. You see, when I got up in the morning and was told my dog had died, it became clear to me that he must have been in great pain. For him to have bitten a family member, he could not have been himself. Much the same for the other story when I learned that my friend’s wife had just left him.
We are all beings of our environments, our opinions and feelings. And all of those things can cause you to say and do things that can’t be understood by those who are not in the same situation with you.
If you meet someone either behaving out of character or acting in a way that doesn’t seem t o fit the situation, put out your hand and be patient when you think it is least possible for him to do so.
You may turn around a story that has a sad ending simply by your actions.

A. he was bad-tempered
B. he was suffering the pain of losing his wife
C. he was bothered by an unexpected visit

69. What conclusion did the author get from the two stories?
A. Misunderstanding should be removed in time.

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题.
Rock climbing requires not only physical strength, but also complete mental concentration. So it is not an easy sport. But this may not be true for 20-year-old Sasha diGuilian. This fearless girl who has been dominating the sport ever since she entered this field is just getting warmed up.
The youngster who is also studying for a creative writing degree at Columbia University says that she began climbing even before she could walk. As a baby, she constantly escaped from her bed and led her friends to the nearest rocks or hills. Then at the age of seven she attended brother’s birthday party at a local rock climbing gym and found her gift for it.
Soon after, she joined the local center in her hometown of Alexandria, Virginia and began climbing— first once a week, then twice and soon, almost every day. At the age of nine, she won her first climbing competition by participating in an event that she hadn’t even been aware of, until she went to the gym for her normal climbing routine. Her competitive nature and love for the sport immediately reached the peak and she began training seriously, but this time outside the gym—climbing real mountains.
As a youngster, she dominated the Junior Continental Championships from 2004 to 2010. Then she went on to catch the Pan American Championship and the US National Championship as soon as she was old enough. And in 2011, at just 18 years old, she was crowned(加冕)Female Overall World Champion in Arco, Italy at her first attempt.
Sasha diGuilian is also the youngest woman who has completed the 5.14d graded climb in which climbers must climb rocks that are vertical. The 5.14d graded climb is regarded as the most difficult climb and it is something that even the most experienced climbers are a little afraid to take on, because a small slip could result in a severe injury or even death.
