Failing in something isn't a really nice feeling, but Scotland’ s Fettes College in Edinburgh wants to show its students that failure isn’t something to fear and is actually something to accept willingly!
The boarding schoo l held “failure week" to celebrate taking risks and learning from them。
Whether in sports or school, children often face lots of pressure to succeed and do well, and the school was becoming concerned。
“This week at Fettes we have been focusing on one of the most misunderstood parts of success: failure。
While we are often scared of failure, it is important to learn that it is only through failing, often many times, that we learn how to succeed. “All through the week,we have looked at the experiences of some of the most successful inventors,
artists and businessmen, who failed hundreds,if not thousands of times on their journey to success,” read a letter on Fettes College's website。
To celebrate failure, students were encouraged to try something they've never done before, like playing an instrument or dancing in front of audiences。
A number of students stepped up and tried things that they finally failed in, but they had fun and enjoyed the experience. Students were also taught about famous people like J。
K。
Rowling and Richard Branson who failed many times before they finished what they set out to do.
“If they let the fear of failure stop them from doing something, they are actually stopping themselves from learning, developing, and potentially succeeding,” said Sue Bruce, head of personal and social education in the school.
24。
Why does the boarding school hold “failure week”?
A。
To celebrate the students’ successes。
B。
To reduce the students’ study pressure.
C. To show concern on the students’ failure.
D。
To help the students accept and learn from failure。
25。
What does the underlined sentence in the third paragraph imply?
A. Failure is a necessary part of success。
B。
Success can not be misunderstood as failure.
C。
Failure is mostly caused by misunderstanding。
D。
Both success and failure are hard to understand。
26. What are students encouraged to do during “failure week”?
A。
To do some risky activities。
B. To entertain themselves。
C。
To try something new。
D. To interview famous people。
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. We won’t be successful until we experience some failures。
B. The students who failed in trying new things felt depressed.
C。
Many successful people are lucky and achieve success easily.
D。
The fear of failure can stop students from learning and succeeding。
C
Like people, plants experience stress。
And also, like people, the response to that stress can determine success.
Bad environmental conditions, such as drought, flood, heat and other stresses, affect yields(产量)more than crop pests and diseases。
We are trying to find a way to equip plants with the ability to tolerate environmental stress and maintain high production, said Stephen Howell,a professor of genetics and cell biology。
Plant cells produce proteins(蛋白质)and ship them to different parts of the cell. Under normal conditions, these proteins are folded into their normal, healthy structures as they are produced. When a plant is under stress, its cells produce poorly folded or unfolded proteins。
Then a
built-in system senses t his and “sets off an alarm in the cell,” said Howell.
In response to the alarm, another protein (IRE1) starts working and creates a different process which activates (激活)the stress response genes whose products bring about defensive measures that help the plant survive。
“As it turns out, responses that are activated under stress conditions actually inhibit the growth of plants," said Howell. “This allows them to preserve their energy to survive the stress conditions.”
For plants in the wild, this response is a help for survival,he said. In production of agriculture crops, however, this response reduces production。
“You don’t want crop plants to stop growing," Howell said。
“You want them to continue to grow and produce even though they are under stress。
”
With the new understanding of this stress response, the next step may be to silence the alarm system, said Howell. “What may be important is to disable some of these stress responses. That may make the plant more productive under stress conditions。
”
28。
What cause an alarm in the plant cells?
A。
The folded proteins。
B. The abnormal proteins.
C。
The defensive measures. D. The stress response genes。
29。
What is the use of the energy preserved in the plants under stress conditions?
A. To help the plants to survive.
B. To help keep high production.
C. To keep the plants growing。
D。
To help to produce proteins.
30。
What is the meaning of t he underlined word “inhibit” in Paragraph 5?
A。
Prevent. B. Start。
C. Continue. D。
Promote.
31. How does Howell intend to make crop plants keep high production under stress conditions?
A. By making crop plants keep more energy.
B。
By making crop plants stop growing.
C. By making the alarm system stop working.
D。
By making the alarm system respond quickly。
D
Raised by a single mother in Hartford, Fred Wright struggled with behavioral problems and was forced to move from one school to another. He even reached a point where he felt like he had nothing to live for.
“I was walking around with a lot on my shoulders,” he said。
“I couldn’t handle it. I didn’t care about life anymore。
” But all that started to change when Wright met Patricia Kelly.
“I was seven when I met Mrs Kelly. I wasn’t used to strictness。
I wasn’t used to hearing the word ‘no’,” said Wright, now 17。
Kelly, a former soldier and an equestrian(骑手),took Wright under her wing and helped him find hope in an unlikely place-on a horse.
“Wright was like a round peg(钉子)that everybody kept trying to squeeze into a square hole,” Kelly said. “He was hurting。
He needed a place where he could express himself。
The riding field became that place for him. "
For the last 30 years,Kelly has helped children stay on the right track through her nonprofit,Ebony Horsewomen. The program offers horseback riding lessons and teaches animal science to more than 300 young people a year。
By exposing those children to horsemanship, Kelly aims to give them an alternative to the streets and an opportunity to turn their lives around.
“We use horses as a hook to create pride, esteem and healing,” said Kelly, 66。
“They learn that they have ability. They just have to unlock it。
”
“When you teach a child to ride a horse, they learn they are the center of their environment,” said Kelly. “Once they make that connection, they can change what happens in school,at home and in the community."

Tips on Writing
As an editor,I go through contributors’ articles and edits them to
make sure they are error—free for publishing。
If you have ever contributed to our newspaper, you have probably noticed a big difference between what you wrote and what is printed。
36 Here are some tips that can help you improve your writing.
Keep it simple. Too many writers, especially young writers, try to make their writing look complex by using complex sentences, and big words. 37 If you use grammar or vocabulary that you are unfamiliar with, you are more likely to use it incorrectly. Your writing will be clearer and more powerful if you use the writing skills.
38 We always think we know what we have written, but that often isn’t what we actually wrote。
Our brains know what we mean to write, but sometimes we can’t find our mistakes. Reading what you write out loud forces you to slow down and read what you actually write instead of what you think you wrote。
Your ears will catch mistakes your eyes missed。
Ask for help。
There is no shame in asking for help。
You don’t have to ask a professional editor for help, just a friend or parent can offer valuable writing feedback。
Did what you wrote make sense? 39 Revise, revise, revise! Writing is a process. 40 You want your submission to be the best, not just something you threw together at the last minute.
A. This is often a mistake.
B. Read your articles out loud。
C. Correct the mistakes we have made。
D. You can turn to a professional editor if it is necessary.
E. You can revise what you wrote based on reader feedback.
F。
You never want to submit your first draft for publication。
G. All writers, including me, can always improve the writing!

Dear Peter,
How are you doing?
I’m writing to tell something about our school. Our school is located at the foot of a green hill with a little stream flowing through the beautiful campus. Behind the school lies a great park where we do some reading and relax ourselves in our spare time。
The school enjoys beautiful scenery as well as convenient transportation, which enables you to go downtown in fifteen minutes' time。
Many dormitories equipped with basic furniture are ready and tasty food will be prepared for you in the school dining hall. Next to the dining hall is a store and you can also take the regular bus to the supermarkets nearby.

W:Because it’s easy. I don't want to have to do all the planning。

W:What are some of the problems of doing a part-time job as a college student?
M: Schoolwork suffers。
Because I don’t have as much time to study as when I didn’t have a
part—time job,I have had to give up things I enjoy, like sleep and football。
I can’t get into the social life because I have to work right after class. Some of my friends have stopped calling me. I also miss TV。
W:What do you do in a day?
M:I get up at 7:00 to make an 8:00 a.m。
class。
I have classes till 1:30. And then, I drive to the
supermarket where I work. I work till 7:00 p.m. And then I drive home
and eat dinner. After I take a shower and rest for a half hour, it’s about nine. This gives me only a couple of hours to study. My eyes start to close well before I go to bed at eleven.
