第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)I was getting ready to go to bed when the phone rang. This could not be good. My mind raced through the list of family members who might need help, but the voice was hardly familiar.
“Linda, this is Lesley.” I didn’t know Lesley well. We did occasionally speak with each other, but to say we were friends was not appropriate. I asked what she needed. Perhaps something really awful caused her to reach someone she barely knew. Instead, she asked me, “Do you have room for a turkey? In your freezer?” We had lots of room in our freezer, and in fact, too much. “Sure,” I responded, “did your freezer break down?” “Not exactly,” Lesley replied, “but I will explain when I arrive.”
Minutes later came a huge freezer truck. Lesley stepped down and explained the lease (租约) of the grocery store her husband serviced had run out and that they had to empty all the freezers that night. Thinking it was a shame to throw away all this good food, they decided to drop off food to anyone she could think of. Noticing our freezer was pretty empty, Lesley asked to fill it up. Our home was their last stop and anything left would have to be put in our freezer. An hour later, everything finished, I asked her, “When will you come back for all this?” Lesley laughed, “We don’t want it back. It is yours! Thanks for helping us out!” Then they waved goodbye and drove away.
“For helping them out?” We opened our freezer do or. Inside were all expensive foods we never bought but often longed to try. We were struggling to buy groceries, yet it was not something we shared with anyone. However, our needs were met in an unexpected way by that call.

B.Their freezer was not frequently used.
C.They were glad to put the turkey in the freezer.

C.Because she knew the writer was in need.
D.Because she didn’t want f ood to go to waste.
4、What can be the best title for the text?
A.Who Is My Angel? B.Unexpected Bargains
C.A Friend on Speaking Terms D.Do You Have Room for a Turkey?
22.(8分)The extraordinary price paid for the last Leonardo da Vinci’s painting in private hands has resulted in a fevered guess at the buyer —but so far the new owner’s identity is inscrutable.
Christie’s, the auction (拍卖) house that sold “Salvator Mundi” in New York on Wednesday, has remained silent about who paid $ 450m for the 500-year-old work — a price that set a world auction record. With the pool of possible buyers limited to billionaires and a very few institutions, some in the art world are trying to narrow it down to a region or nationality.
Thomas Seydoux, an art adviser and former head of Impressionist and Modem Art at Christie’s, suspects that the bidder is “new money”, because the bidding went up in “wild increases” - at one stage jumping from $ 370m to $ 400m. He guessed that the buyer might be a billionaire from Asia, based on current trends in the world of fine art auctions.
Others have suggested a Gulf royal or billionaire — perhaps from Qatar, which has lavishly (大量地) collected art, or Abu Dhabi, which has just opened a branch of the Louvre museum. The Abu Dhabi branch has a Leo nardo’s painting, “La belle ferronniere”, on loan from the Louvre in Paris but lacks its own.
“Salvator Mundi” has a troubled history. It was sold for £ 45 at Sotheby’s in
London in 1958, when it was thought to 6 a copy, but by 2011 it had been accepted as a work entirely by Leonardo, when it was included in an exhibition at the National Gallery in London. It was then reportedly bought for $ 75m - $ 80m by art adviser Yves Bouvier, who sold it to Russian collector Dmitry Rybolovlev for $ 127.5m.
Mr Rybolovl ev said, “Thanks to the professionalism and expertise of Christie’s, the record-breaking sale of Da Vinci’s ‘Salvator Mundi’ has helped bring back some of the value of the collection.”
1、What does the underlined word “inscrutable” mean?
A.available B.unknown
C.uncontroversial D.determined
2、What might Thomas Seydoux’s Asian “new money” be based on?
A.The number of wealthy people in Asia.
B.The trend of wealthy people collecting art.
C.The reasonable way the buyer bid for the painting.
D.The aggressive way the bidder drove up the price.
3、What did Rybolovlev’s words suggest?
A.The sale of the painting reflected its value.
B.He regretted having possessed the painting.
C.The high bid for the painting was ridiculous.
D.Christie’s taught us how to appreciat e the painting.
4、Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A.Troubled History of “Salvator Mundi”
B.Hunt for New Master of Record-breaking Da Vinci
C.The Most Expensive Painting Ever Sold
D.“Salvator Mundi” Painting’s Buyer to Be Told
23.(8分)Cigarette butts (烟蒂) are everywhere - clogging up our streets, littering our beaches - and for decades they’ve been thought of as “unrecyclable”. But a New Jersey-based company, called TerraCycle, has taken on the challenge, and has come up with a way to recycle millions of cigarette butts and turn them into industrial plastic products. Its aim is to take items that people normally consider impossible to recycle, and then use science to figure out a way to do just that.
Despite the increase in anti-smoking ads and messaging over the past 20 years,
global sales of cigarettes increased by 4 percent, and a whole lot of those cigarette butts are ending up as trash, which can surely pollute the surrounding environment.
So how do you go about turning all those poisonous ends into something useful? TerraCycle does this by first breaking them down into separate parts. They mix the remaining materials, such as the tobacco and the paper, with other kinds of rubbish, and use it on non-agricultural land, such as golf courses. The filters (过滤嘴) are a little harder. To recycle these, TerraCycle first makes them clean and cuts them into small pieces, and then combines them with other recycled materials, making them into liquid for industrial plastic products.
They now have more than 3,000 cigarette recycling bins in nine countries around the world. They’re also expanding their recycling offerings to the rest of the 40 percent of household waste that currently can’t be recycled, such as chocolate packaging, pens, and mobile phones. The goal is to use the latest research to find a way to stop so much waste ending up in. landfill (垃圾填埋), and then get companies to fund the process. And so far, it’s working.
“We haven’t found anything that we can’t recycle,” communications d irector of Terra Cycle, Albe Zakes, said. “But with the amount and variety of packaging and litter in the world, we are always looking for new waste streams to address.”
1、Which of the following is true according to the text?
A.It is impossible for the filters to be recycled.
B.Terra Cycle has achieved a lot in recycling what used to be considered “unrecyclable”.

D.Mobile phones can’t be recycled by means of the latest research.
2、What can we learn about the approach to recycling cigarette butts? A.Unbelievable and costly.
B.Excellent but hard to carry out.
C.Useless in dealing with other household waste.
D.Practical and environmentally friendly
3、The underlined word ‘“trash” in Paragrap h 2 probably means . A.mineral B.fertilizer
C.rubbish D.poison
4、In Albe Zakes’s opinion, .
A.TerraCycle has successfully recycled everything.
B.they still have a long way to go.
C.it will be too difficult for them to find new ways.
D.the public should be aware of the environmental pollution.
24.(8分)Susan was born as the ninth child in a Catholic family. She suffered from learning disabilities ever since her birth because of her mother’s poor health.
School was difficult for Susan and she was bullied because of her different behaviors. Her siblings, who were much older, had life experiences that were unknown to their little sister. From the time of her birth, Susan was a screamer. The only really safe place that she would use as a repeat was her bedroom. There she would hang posters of her musical idols on the wall and sing popular music into a hairbrush that she pretended was a microphone.
One by one the siblings moved away from home and then Susan’s father died. This left her alone with an aging mother and a cat. The siblings accused her mother of not expecting more out of Susan. She had seen many professionals and remembered hearing the word “borderline” but didn’t know what it meant. She tried volunteer work. Her best state of mind, however, was found when she was singing and so she would regularly join others in karaoke or pubs where she could show her skills and receive appreciation from the crowd.
When Susan announced at Christmas that she was planning to compete in the Britain’s Got Ta lent contest, her siblings tried to discourage her. It was a wonder that she was even able to do the audition considering the troubles she faced just physically getting to the right place.
“The Woman I Was Born to Be” is a beautiful story written in the si mple but humorous voice of the author, Susan Boyle. She tells her story from birth to the present in an interesting and educational manner. The writing is supplemented by photos from her albums.
I love this book! In fact, I read the whole thing in one day!
There is something in the stories that not only teaches the reader but also inspires us to reach for our dreams — no matter how impossible they may seem to be!

This country is Bhutan, “Land of the Thunder Dragon”, which is located in South Asia and is encompassed by India, China, and Nepal.
Bhutan is the last standing Buddhist Kingdom in the World and, until recently, has preserved much of their culture since the l7th century by avoiding globalization and staying isolated from the world. Bhutan is the only coun try in the world that has a ‘GNH’, which refers to “Gross National Happiness.’’The process of measuring GNH began when Bhutan opened up to globalization. It measures people’s quality of life, and makes sure that “material and spiritual development happen t ogether.”Bhutan has done an amazing job of finding this balance. Bhutan has continually been ranked as the happiest country in all of Asia, and the eighth Happiest Country in the world according to Business Week. In 2007, Bhutan had the second fastest growing GDP in the world, at the same time as maintaining their environment and cultural identity.
In 2008,in Bhutan’s first democratic election,28-year-old Jigme KhesarNamgyel Wang Chuck was elected president of Bhutan. He promises to “maintain a stance (立场)o f protection against the worst aspects of globalization, maintaining the ‘Gross National Happiness’.”But Jigme himself is no stranger to globalization. He attended
high school at Phillips Academy and university at Wheaton College and then graduated from Oxford.
