A young girl named Malala, born in 1997 in the northwest of Pakistan, is famous for supporting children and women to get education.
In 2012, she was shot and seriously injured when she returned home on the school bus. Luckily, she was sent to the hospital in time and saved. After that, she went back to school and began to strive(奋斗)for children and women to receive education.

Before she finished her high school, she had written a book called I am Malala. She said, "I hope the readers around the world have chances to read my book. I'm not much of a crier most of the time. But recently when I was reading a book on a plane, I started crying. Of course, it came as a big surprise when tears came up, no matter how hard I tried, I wasn't able to control myself.
Oh no, not this now, I thought to myself. But even as the thought entered my brain, I felt the first hot drop of salty water coming down my face. I put my head down, hoping that I could go on reading.
In fact, the harder I tried, the more tears pushed their way out of my eyes. You could guess how surprised the man next to me looked.
I dropped my head in shame. He must think I was crazy. Maybe I could turn toward him, hold up the cover of the book and say in my crying voice, "I'm sorry, sir. It's just a really good book!" But I didn't say anything. Instead, I just put my head back against the seat and let the tears run. Do you know what decision I made while I was crying? My decision was that it was okay if he thought I was crazy. I'd rather be crazy than be the kind of person who wouldn't cry when the situation called for it, or who wouldn't let herself feel anything at all.
I've been that girl who has spent so much time trying to make sure people didn't think I was crazy. But now I don't want to be that girl any more—that bored and sad girl. I'd rather be this girl who is able to forgive(原谅), love and act, even if it means being disappointed or being hurt again and again.

One day, I took an underground to work. I saw something that made me very sad. On the tube(underground in London),a mother kept looking at her phone screen and playing a game, with her daughter sitting beside her. The little girl, about 5 years old,was talking to her mother about her day, repeating the next stop's name cheerfully, praising her mother's long nails-trying to draw her mother's attention. Her mother just nodded and mumbled "Mm,hm" with her eyes glued to the screen, busy passing the levels of the game. I watched the girl give a final try to at least get her mum to look at her, but it was no use. Then the little girl turned silent. It was a shame the mother didn't notice that.
It broke my heart and got me wondering-what kind of game would make the mother forget she has the most beautiful thing in the world, the human she created, the person she loves with all her hearty What did it mean when she couldn't look into her daughter's eyes and even stop to listen to the girl?
Some parents are almost like the teenagers, always on their phones with mindless games or going through Facebook. Perhaps parents have many things to deal with, but sometimes they are everything to their kids.
This is not an isolated example. I've seen too many such examples. I might not be a parent myself, and probably still have a long way before becoming one,but I know what I saw isn't right.
The scene used to be seen among teenagers very often when parents complained how their children were crazy about their mobile phones. Look how the situation has changed! The parents have become "technology slaves",that is to say, they can't control themselves while using mobile phones. Now some middle-aged parents hold the best iPhones or Samsung phones, which are
probably the only two brands they know. They are playing the simple games with so expensive mobile phones. I'm uncertain whether to laugh or to cry. But my hope is that this storm can pass. ( )1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The girl failed to attract her mother's attention.
B. The mother felt sorry after her daughter turned silent.
C. The writer has much experience about being a parent.
D. All middle-aged parents know many brands of mobile phones.
( )2. The underlined word "isolated" in Paragraph 4 means " ".
A. spreading fast
B. happening once
C. increasing quickly
D. appearing suddenly
( )3 .In the passage, the writer mainly wants to express .
A. the worries that children are crazy about mobile phones
B. the happiness that parents are now able to use modern technology
C. the sadness that the best smart phones cost parents too much money
D. the hope that parents can use new technology like smart phones properly
( )4 .What's the best title of the passage?
A. Middle-aged Parents
B. A Scene on the Tube
C. Technology Slaves
D. Mindless Phone Games

What is one think that would help parents understand their kids better? More than 8,000 US kids answered this question in an online poll(投票)by Kids Health. org.
Many US kids-two out of three-said they get along with their parents. But that doesn't mean they never disagree. In fact, most kids reported arguing with their parents,at least sometimes. And two out of five kids said arguments sometimes even include shouting at each other.
"It's certainly normal to disagree and argue," says Darcy Lyness,an American expert, "But it's also important to learn how to do so respectfully(尊重地). Be patient. Don't use a raised, angry voice."
And not surprisingly, three out of four kids said they have lied to their parents sometimes. Many said they lied so they would not get into trouble or disappoint their parents. According to Lyness, lying isn't just wrong. It can actually have bad results. Telling the truth builds trust.
Telling the truth, says Lyness, shows maturity(成熟).But older kids actually lie more often than younger ones. Kids aged 12 to 14 not only said they lied more, but they also reported having less fun, feeling less close and not getting along well with their parents.
According to Lyness, those feelings are common. As kids become more independent(独立的),they have more areas of disagreement with their parents. But it doesn't have to be that way."Kids and parents get along differently at each stage of the journey," she says."As kids grow and change,it is important for everybody to change."
( )1. Why do some kids lie to their parents?
A. They don't trust their parents.
B. They don't want to get into trouble.
C. They don't think lying is wrong.
D. They are disappointed with their parents.
( )2. About out of the 8,000 students in the poll said that they have lied to their parents.
A. 3,000
B. 4,500
C. 6,000
D. 7,500 ( )3. According to Paragraph 5,older kids .
A. have more fun in life
B. seldom lie to their parents
C. feel less close to their parents
D. get along better with their parents

One day, whip W vas waiting for my father, I saw a little boy, around two years old, running freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short distance. The boy had a big smile on his face as if he had just been set free from some sort of prison(监狱). The boy would then fall to the grass, get up,without looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could, again, still with a smile on his face,as if nothing had happened.
At that moment,I thought to myself, "why aren't most adults this way?" Most adults, when they fall down, make a big deal out of it and don't even make a second attempt. They would be so embarrassed that they would not try again if someone saw them fall. Or,because they fall, they would find a good excuse for themselves that they're not fit for it. They would end up being too afraid to attempt again for fear of failure(失败).
However, with kids, when they fall down, they don't consider their falling down as a failure. Instead, they treat it as a learning experience. They try again and again until they succeed. The answer must be that they have not connected "falling down" with the word "failure". What's more, they probably think to themselves that it's quite okay to fall down and that it's not wrong to do so. In other words, they allow themselves to make mistakes,so they remain energetic.
I was deeply impressed by the boy's persistence(坚持不懈)and the manner in which he did things.
( )1 .In the writer's opinion, what might the little boy regard his falling down as?
A. A failure.
B. A joke.
C. An interesting game.
D. A learning experience.
( )2. In the writer's opinion, why can't many adults succeed?
A. Because they are afraid of embarrassment.
B. Because they can't find a good excuse.
C. Because once they fail, they won't attempt again.
D. Because they don't allow themselves to make mistakes.
( )3. The underlined word "attempt" in Paragraph 2 means .
A.尝试
B.放弃
C.面对
D.怀疑
( )4. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. All roads lead to Rome.
D. Each coin has two sides.

Imagine having a ear made out of an apple. It seems like a crazy idea from a horror movie. But it could happen in the near future.
Canadian biophysicist Andrew Pelling used an apple to grow a human ear. He think fruit and vegetables can be used to cheaply repair human body parts in the future.
Scientists have been trying to grow organs (器官) in labs to replace our old ones. But it is a hard job. For example, liver cells (肝细胞) can grow in a lab, but he cells still need things like blood vessels (血管) to actually work. These things have to grow inside a scaffold(支架).
In the past, scientists have used man-made materials, animals parts and even dead people as scaffolds. But that has proved to be difficult and expensive.
Pelling and his team, however, f ound the apple to be a cheap and easy-to-use scaffold.
They first cut an apple into the shape of an ear. Then they used a special way to take out the apple’s cell and make it a scaffold. The team then added human cells to the apple, and watched it grow.
“You can implant these scaffolds into the body, and the body will send in cells and a blood supply and actually keep these things alive,” Pelling said during a Ted Talk speech.
The team put the apple scaffold inside a living mouse and the mouse’s cells slowly took over the pieces of apple.
Now Pelling is thinking of other fruit, plants or vegetables to use.
He says that the shape of flower petals could be perfect for repairing skin. And asparagus(芦笋) could fix a broken spine(脊柱).
Now, Pelling and his team are trying hard to put these crazy ideas into reality.
1. Pelling’s idea of man-made ear seems crazy because he use _____as scaffolds.
A. animal parts
B.dead people
C.man-made materials
D.ordinary apples
2. The underlined word “implant” in Paragraph 7 probably means ______.
A. pick
B. put
C. produce
D. protect
3. Which is the right order of making an ear out of an apple according to the passage?
a. put the apple scaffold inside a mouse
b. add human cells to the apple scaffold
c. cut an apple into the shape of an ear
d. make the apple ear a scaffold
e. take out the apple’s cells in a special way
A. a-b-c-d-e
B.b-c-d-a-e
C.c-e-d-b-a
D.c-d-a-e-b
4. From the last three paragraphs, we can infer that Pelling will experiment with other fruit, plants or vegetbales _______.
A. to make human ears
B. to repair burnt skin
C. to fix a broken spine
D. to make human body parts

Let’s try doing the following experiment.
What to Do:
Use string to hang a paper clip or other small object at about chest(胸部)
level.
Pick up a stick, such as a broom handle.Take three or four steps away from the
paper clip.
Now close one eye and walk toward the paper clip.Try to touch it with the tip
of the stick. If you miss, try again, still keeping one eye closed. Now try it with both
eyes open and see if it’s easier to do.
How it works:
In the experiment, you have to judge how far away the paper clip is.Your brain has several ways of doing this.
One simple way depends on how much your eye has to focus(聚焦)itself.Using only one eye, most people will find it difficult to touch the paper clip on the first try,but the brain still gets some information about distance—though not much.
Your brain can judge distance much better when you look at something with both eyes.In fact, your brain has more than one way to use both eyes in judging distance. For example,to see anything clearly, you have to make both of your eyes point at the object. When you look at a nearby object, your eyes turn inward. You can feel this happening if you look at the tip of your finger and move your finger toward your nose.
Your brain gets information from the eyes about how much they are pointing toward each other.Using that information, the brain can tell how far away any object is,whether it is a basketball or a paper clip.
1.How many materials do we need at least to do the experiment?
A.Two B.Three C.Four D.Five
2.The passage is mainly about that with eyes our brain can judge .A.how big an object is B.how high an object is
C.how far away an object is D.how much information an object is 3.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Our brain judges distance in one way when we use both eyes.
B.Our brain cannot judge the distance of a small object but a big one.
C.How much our eyes focus helps our brain judge the size of an object.
D.How much our eyes focus helps our brain judge the distance of an object.
4.From the experiment we can infer(推断).
A.with one eye we can see an object as clearly as we use two eyes
B.our eyes turn towards the inside when we look at an object very near
C.within 3 or 4 steps, the nearer an object is,the more clearly we can see it
D.our brain can hardly get any information about distance when we use one eye
