Have you ever seen people dance? Some dances are fast and others are slow. People's feet always move when they dance. They keep on moving until the music stops.
People have enjoyed dancing for a very long time. This story is of a different kind of dance. It is the dance of bees.
If you have ever watched bees, you know that they are very clever. They also work hard looking for food and bringing it back to their home.
The home of the bees is called a bee hive. Here hundreds even thousands of bees live. They work
day and night building small walls of wax(蜡). There they make their honey. This is the same honey that we eat.
Where does the honey come from? Bees live on food from flowers. Have you seen bees flying around a flower garden? When a bee rests on a flower, it tries to go to the centre of it. There it takes in as much food as its body can hold. Then it flies to take the food back to the hive.
At the hive, bees change this flower food into honey. Then they fly away for more food.
How do the bees know where to find the best food in the sweetest flowers? One bee acts as a guide. When it discovers good flowers, it flies back to the hive and tells the others. It does this by dancing for them.
The bee dances on one side. This tells the other bees which way to go to find the flowers. But that is not all. The bee dances for some time. And the length of its dance tells the other bees how far they must fly to reach the flowers.
When the bees see the dance, they know where the flowers are. They fly away and return with more food for the hive.
Sometimes we hear the music of the bees as they fly around. But few people have ever seen them dance. Yet without that dance we might never have sweet honey to eat.

Remembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it.
Recite and repeat in conversation
When you hear a person’s name, repeat it. Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You should also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial.
Ask the other person to recite and repeat
You can let other people help you remember their names. After you’ve been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name and pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you’re making to learn their names.
Admit you don’t know
Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of th em will feel sympathy if you say, “I’m working to remember names better. Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?”
Use associations(联想).
Link each person you meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note: “Vicki Cheng-tall, black hair.” To reinforce(加强)your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible.
Limit the number of new names you learn at one time
When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names. Free yourself from remembering every one. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names. Last names can come later.
Go early
Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes. Sometimes just a few people show up on time. That’s fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to others—an automatic review for you.
50.Most people will feel ________ when you try hard to remember their names.
A. upset
B. annoyed
C. delighted
D. discouraged
51.If you can’t remember someone’s name, you may________.
A. tell him the truth

A. all their names
B. a couple of names first
C. just their last names
D. as many names as possible
53.What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Tips on an important social skill.
B. Importance of attending parties.
C. How to make use of associations.

George had stolen some money. The police had caught him and he had been put in prison. Now his trial(审判) was about to begin, and he felt sure that he would be found guilty and sent to prison for a long time.
Then he discovered that an old friend of his was one of the members of the jury(陪审团) at his trial. Of course, he did not tell anybody, but he managed to see his friend secretly one day. He said to him, “Jim, I know that the jury will find me guilty of having stolen the money. I cannot hope to be found not guilty of taking it —that would be too much to expect. But I should be grateful to you for the rest of my life if you could persuade the other members of the jury to add a strong recommendation for mercy(仁慈) to their statement that they consider me guilty.”
“Well, George,” answered Jim, “I shall certainly try to do what I can for you as an old friend, but of course I cannot promise anything. The other eleven people on the jury look terribly
strong-minded to me.”
George said that he would quite understand if Jim was not able to do anything for him, and thanked him warmly for agreeing to help.
The trial went on, and at last the time came for the jury to decide whether George was guilty or not. It took them five hours, but in the end they found George guilty, with a strong recommendation for mercy.
Of course, George was very pleased, but he did not have a chance to see Jim for some time after the trial. However, Jim visited him in prison, and George thanked him warmly and asked him how he had managed to persuade the other members of the jury to recommend mercy.
“Well, George,” Jim answered. “As I thought, those eleven men were very difficult to persuade, but I managed in the end by tiring them out. Do you know, those fools had all wanted to find you not guilty!”

The 92-year-old, thin, calm and proud lady, who is f ully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, even though she is nearly blind, moved to a nursing home today.
Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the hall of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told the room was ready. As she walked slowly to the lift, I provided a true description of her tiny room, including the old sheets that had been hung on her window. “I love it,” she said with the happiness of an
eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy(小狗).
“Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room…just wait.”
“That doesn’t matter,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged. It’s how I arranged my mind. I have already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away.” She went on to explain, “Old age is like a bank account (账目). You take what you’ve put in. So, my advice to you would be to put in a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories. Thank you for your part in filling my memory bank.” And with a smile, she said, “All my mem ories are happy ones.”
Mrs. Jones was always happy in the nursing home and she died at the age of 108.
57.We can infer from the passage that the author ________.
A. is one of Mrs. Jones’ children
B. is a relative of Mrs. Jones
C. works in the nursing home
D. is the owner of the nursing home
58. The room in which the old lady will live ________.
A. is very comfortable
B. is fairly big
C. isn’t well equipped
D. is equipped with new furniture
59. Mrs. Jones was very happy when told about her room because she ________.
A. couldn’t see what her room was like
B. thought the nursing home was her home
C. would have to live in the nursing home
D. had already made up her mind to be happy
60. Which of the following words can best describe Mrs. Jones?
A. Proud.
B. Cheerful.
C. Determined.
D. Honest.
第二节(共5小题;每题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从下框的A—F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,并将答案填写在答题纸相应位置,选项中有一项为多余选项。
A.Drinking water or eating some fruit instead of smoking
B.Make yourself active in sports
C.Escape your social pressure
D.Amuse(娱乐) yourself in proper places
E.Get support from your friends and family
F. Be determined not to smoke
Giving up smoking will most likely add seven years to one’s life. While many people try to give up and fail, it is not an impossible task. Follow these five tips, and you will be well on your way to giving up smoking.
61.
Success in all fields of life begins with firm determination. If you are weak in willpower, you
can never do anything. However, if you make up your mind, once and for all, that you are giving up the habit, whenever you want a smoke, you will remember your promise and not give in.
62.
If you sit around doing nothing there is a higher chance that you will light up a cigarette and relax. Fill your spare time with sports and energetic activities. Try to feel how good it is to get your blood circulating and to breathe in air deeply. If you are not the athletic type, then walking will have the same benefit as other kinds of sports.
63.
If going to a bar means that you are going to have a drink and then light up, maybe it is better to avoid that place for the time being. Once you have truly stopped smoking and you feel how good it is, you can go anywhere and not be tempted (引诱). But while you are in the transition phase(过渡阶段), it is better to carefully choose where you can amuse yourself.
64.
Whenever you get a desire to put a cigarette in your mouth, replace it with something that will help you rather than harm you. Drinking small amounts of water throughout the day is not only a good way to help you give up smoking, but it is also a great way to stay healthy. You should drink eight glasses of water per day, if you can. If you need to put something solid in your mouth, then eat
a piece of fruit.
65.
Tell them that you are giving up smoking for health reasons. Your true friends will support you and not offer you cigarettes. Your family and loved ones will similarly support your efforts and help you to avoid situations where you may feel you have to smoke because of social pressure.

Dear Jane,
I’m sorry to hear that you are not very well these days. In your letter you asked me how to stay healthy. Here is my advice.
Firstly, you should keep a balanced diet. You should avoid eating food high in fat and too much sweet food. You’d better eat more fresh vegetables and fruits. Secondly, taking exercise every day helps building a strong body. Why not take more exercise in your spare time? As we all know, regular exercise is an important part of keeping us healthy. Finally, make sure you have enough sleep and you mustn’t stay up too late at night.
By eating properly and exercising regularly, you can keep your body at a proper weight and stay healthy. I truly hope my advice is helpful and you’ll get well soon.
Best wishes.
Yours sincerely
Lihua
