Once a king got two nice baby eagles. He loved them so much and asked his best eagle trainers to train them to fly.
After several months, the king found that one eagle was already able to fly high in the sky, while the other was staying on a branch of a tree quietly.
The king called all his eagle trainers together and ordered them to try every way to make the other eagle fly. But all of them failed. Then he had an idea. Maybe someone living in the wild could work out the problem. Then he found a farmer living in the grasslands. The king invited him into his palace to train it at once.
The next morning, when the king walked in his garden, he saw the other eagle flying above in the sky freely. "It is unbelievable!" shouted the king. "How could you make it happen?"
The farmer replied, "It's very easy. This eagle was resting on a branch when I came. I just cut off the branch."
It is always the same to people. We all have "two flying wings" in our hearts, but we often seem not to notice them and stay at a safe and comfortable place. We don't know we can fly so high and freely until the "branch" we are resting on breaks.

Alice spends her summer vacations walking back into history. Alice is 15 and she is a guide who shows visitors around the Fort(城堡)Delaware Museum in New York. "This year, I spun wool(纺毛线)on a spinning wheel. Last year, I was a candle maker. My first year, I cared for the garden and looked after the animals. All the jobs I've had at the fort have been really fun." Fort Delaware is a living-history museum that shows how life was in frontier(边远地区)America in the mid-1700s. "Reading about history can't compare to experiencing it for yourself ,"says Alice.
The experience begins as soon as visitors enter the fort. The smell of wood smoke fills the air. Women in petticoats(long skirts) and men in knee breeches(knee-length shorts)are busy with their chores. The guides show visitors how the settlers(移民)would have carried out everyday work. "Kids are surprised when I tell them that one of their jobs would have been to make candles," says another guide, 16-year-old Jane. "They don't realize that kids back then had to work hard." She also shows visitors how to play with toys and games.
They are playing historical parts, so the guides can't wear shorts or T-shirts when the weather is hot. But the clothes of the past can easily change modern kids into people in 18th century. "The clothing felt strange at first, but it does make it easier to get into characters," says Jane.
Working at the fort has helped Jane to appreciate her life even more. Alice agrees. "The fort has taught me how hard life was and how much work there was every day. We are so lucky with everything we have now. Life wasn't always this easy," she says.

Everyone tries to get to school on time. But when bad weather gives you trouble, can you still make it before the bell rings?
In northern China during spring, big sandstorms(沙尘暴)often make trouble for students and everyone else. When the sky is dark with sand, buses and cars all move much more slowly. Sometimes, people can't even see for 20 metres.
Sandstorms usually happen in spring. This year, sandstorms started in late March. They have happened in more than 10 provinces(省)in northern China this year. More than 70 million people have had problems in those places because of the sandstorms.
People in southern China don't have to worry about this kind of bad weather. Most of the sand comes from Gansu Province and Inner Mongolia(内蒙古). In northern China, lots of places have few trees and don't get much rain. People there have been cutting down too many trees. When there aren't many trees, the ground can't keep enough water. Over the years, the ground dries up and turns to sand. When spring comes and the ice melts(融化), the ground becomes looser(更松散的). Strong winds take the loose sand into the sky.
Sandstorms are bad for people's health. If people breathe(呼吸)in too much sand, they could cough or have asthma(哮喘).
Sandstorms also give farmers lots of problems. Sometimes their sheep get lost in the storms and never get back home. The winds also tear down farmers' houses.
What can you do to stop sandstorms? Here's an idea: Ask your parents to help you plant some trees this spring.
If you see people cutting down too many trees, tell them about the dangers of sandstorms, and ask your government to stop them from cutting.

Hundreds of years ago, life was much harder than it is today. People didn't have modern machines. There was no modern medicine, either.
Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution. It's bad to all living things in the world.
Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt over a city. This kind of quilt is called haze(雾霾).
Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away, and they mustn't blow dirty smoke into the air.
We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and not throw them on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.
Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight pollution.

snowstorm. They can happen in towns or villages.
Sandstorms and snowstorms both cause a lot of trouble for
people. In sandstorms, the wind carries the sand.

What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save you life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average(平均高度的) person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the
height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leaked(渗) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement(水泥) might end in injury. Bushes(灌木丛) and grass can help to break a fall.
