第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)“You can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family.” That line comes from American writer Harper Lee’s book To Kill a Mockingbird. Now compare her words to another famous expression: “Blood is thicker tha n water”.
However, if forced to choose which is more important, American researchers now say friendship is more important than family. Their new study suggests that friends may be more important than family members, especially as we age.
The study comes from researchers at Michigan State University. They found the importance of friendship on health and happiness grows as people get older.
William Chopik is an assistant professor of psychology at Michigan State and was one of the lead researchers in this stu dy. He says, “Friendship becomes even more important as we age. Keeping a few really good friends around can make a world of difference for our health and well-being.” Chopik notes that we need to think of friendship as an investment in our future happiness.
The Michigan State researchers considered information from two separate surveys. In the first group, both family and friendships influenced overall health and happiness. However, in the second, researchers said that friendships “became a stronger predictor of health and happiness” as people get older. Also in the second group, unhealthy friendships led to increased chronic conditions. But with supportive friends, Chopik noted, participants reported being happier.
One reason is that people can keep the fr iendships that make them feel good and move on from the ones that don’t. Family, on the other hand, will always be with you. They can be helpful and enjoyable, but can also cause troubles.
This may be good news for people who don’t have strong ties with fa mily members. Not all of us are born into the families we need. But we all have the ability to choose friends that we need.
1、595.What should we invest to get later well-being according to the researchers?
A.Good friend ties. B.Easy health exercises.
C.Common family relations. D.Personal relation knowledge.
2、597.How is the research carried out?
A.By doing two experiments. B.By interviewing all at once.
C.By conducting two surveys. D.By taking part in activities.
3、599.What can the people with weak family ties do?
A.Develop stronger family relations. B.Make as many friends as possible.
C.Get more supportive friends. D.Stay with family members.
4、601.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Friends and family members are equally important.
B.When we grow older, friendship matters more.
C.As we age, family members are more valuable.
D.We always need friends and family members.

The Snowflake (雪花) Man
Wilson Bentley is one of the first known photographers of snowflakes. Two years later, Washington became America’s first president. 23.(8分)The world’s first self-driving taxis began picking up passengers in Singapore recently.
Select members of the public can hail (招呼) a free ride through their smartphones in taxis operated by nuTonomy, an autonomous vehicle software startup. While a number of companies, including Google and Volvo, have been testing self-driving cars on public roads for several years, nuTonomy is the first to offer rides to the public.
Its launch in Singapore is beating ride-hailing service Uber, which plans to offer rides in autonomous cars in Pittsburgh soon.
NuTonomy is starting small—six cars now, growing to a dozen by the end of the year. The long-term goal is to have a fully self-driving taxi fleet (车队) in Singapore by 2018, to help cut the number of cars on Singapore’s overcrowded roads from 900,000 to 300,000. Eventually, the model could be adopted in cities around the world, nuTonomy hopes. “When you are able to take that many cars off the road, it creates a lot of possibilities. You can create smaller roads, you can create much smaller car parks,” said Doug Parker, nuTonomy’s chief operating officer.
For now, the taxis only run in a 2.5-square-mile business and residential (住宅的) district called “one-north”, and pick-ups and drop-offs are limited to specified locations. Riders must have an invitation from nuTonomy to use the service. The company says dozens have signed up for the launch, and it plans to expand that list to thousands of people within a few months.
The cars—modified Renault Zoe and Mitsubishi i-MiEV electrics—have a driver in front who is prepared to take back the wheel and a researcher in the back who watches the car’s computers. Each car is fitted with six sets of Lidar—a detection system that uses lasers to operate like radar—including one that constantly spins on the roof. There are also two cameras on the dashboard to scan for obstacles (障碍) and detect changes in traffic lights.
NuTonomy was formed in 2013. Earlier this year, the company was the first to win approval from Singapore’s government to test self-driving cars in one-north. NuTonomy announced a research partnership with Singapore’s Land Transport Authority earlier this month.
Singapore is ideal because it has good weather, great infrastructrue and drivers who tend to obey traffic rules. As a land-locked island, the city of 5.4 million people is seeking creative ways to grow its economy, so it’s been supportive of autonomous vehicle research.
1、It seems that the service of self-driving taxis ________.
A.is operated with high technology
B.has passed through its initial stage
C.is supported by Google and Volvo
D.will spread to other countries soon
2、It is implied in the passage that self-driving taxis can finally ________.
A.reduce passengers’ fare B.cut down fuel consumption
C.ensure passengers’ safety D.result in better environment
3、According to the passage, what makes it possible for Singapore to provide self-driving taxi service includes ________. A.its small area and urban population
B.support from its people and government
C.its advanced economy and technology
D.necessity to improve its infrastructure
4、What do we learn about the present self-driving taxis in Singapore?
A.Drivers drive them with the help of researchers.
B.One can get into or out of them wherever one is.
C.Hundreds of people can take advantage of them.
D.Y ou do not have to pay whenever you take them.
24.(8分)Experts like to say the best form of exercise is whatever kind you’ll actually do. But that may not always be the case; new research finds that people who combine exercise with their social lives may be at an advantage over solitary(独自) exercisers. Tennis, badminton and soccer are all better for longevity(长寿) than cycling, swimming, jogging or gym exercise, according to the research.
The study was based on data from about 8,500 adults who were part of the Copenhagen City Heart Study. They completed a health and lifestyle questionnaire, which included questions about type and frequency of physical activity, and were monitored by the researchers for around 25 years, a period during which about 4,500 of the subjects died.
Tennis came out on top in the research. Compared with people sitting all day, those who reported playing tennis as their main form of exercise could expect to add 9.7 years to their life time, followed by badminton (6.2 years), soccer (4.7 years), cycling (3.7 years), swimming (3.4 years), jogging (3.2 years) and health-club activities (1.5 years).
Tennis likely took the top spot because “it’s very interactive,” says study co-author Dr. James O’Keefe, a physician at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute. “At every point you’re talking. It’s just a very natur al way to emotionally bond with people, besides getting your exercise.” But he adds that the study may not have been able to fully account for the fact that wealthier, better-educated people—who tend to be healthier to begin with—may be more likely to play tennis.
Activities like running and weight lifting still extend your life and offer plenty of other health benefits. But for the best possible benefits, O’Keefe says gym-goers may want to consider combining those workouts with activities that foster social connection.
O’Keefe, whose exercise typically includes running and weight lifting, says he’s even changed his own behavior
because of the study: he and his family have taken up badminton.
“You can’t play badminton without feeling like a kid again,” he says. “It’s just pure fun.”
1、Which of the following is best for living a long life?
A.Cycling. B.Badminton.
C.Swimming. D.Gym exercise.
2、How many people were still living at the end of the research?
A.About 8,500. B.About 4,500.
C.About 4000. D.About 2500.
3、What matters most to the result of the research?
A.Family life. B.Social connections.
C.Frequency of exercise. D.Wealth and education.
4、What does O’Keefe do after the finding?
A.He puts the theory into practice.
B.He plays badminton just for fun.
C.He feels like playing badminton with kids.
D.He takes more exercise than before.
25.(10分)Encouraging life to bloom(兴旺) in the middle of a desert is no easy task. But one company in the United Arab Emirates has come up with a plan to provide drinking water for the state’s citizens. The company intends to drag icebergs from Antarctica to the gulf coast in order to harvest its freshwater.
The company plans to source the massive blocks of ice from Heard Island, around 600 miles off the coast of mainland Antarctica. It will then transport them around 5,500 miles to Fujarirah, one part of the UAE. One iceberg could provide enough water for one million people over five years, according to the company.
The company’s director says they have already tra velled the transportation route and checked the possibility of the scheme, according to reports in Gulf News. Speaking to the site about what he is calling the UAE Iceberg Project, Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman Al Shehi said, “We have made the technical and f inancial plan. We will start the project at the beginning of 2018. We want it mainly for the water. It could also be good for tourism and the weather.”
The UAE is one of the driest countries in the world, due to its extremely arid climate, which receives less than four inches of rainfall per year. Despite that, it consumes more water than double the global national average, putting the country at severe risk of droughts over the next 25 years.
An average iceberg contains more than 20 billion gallons of water, according to the company. The iceberg takes a long time to melt as 80 percent of it is underwater, while the white ice above reflects sunlight and deflects(使转向) its
heat. Blocks of ice will be placed in giant tanks, before being processed. “This is the purest water in the world.” Mr. Al Shehi added.
1、What can we learn about the UAE project?
A.It will help the UAE harvest freshwater.
B.It will encourage life to boom in Antarctica.
C.It will put the UAE at severe risk of droughts.
D.It will completely change the climate in the UAE.
2、Where could the block of ice come from?
A.The Atlantic Ocean. B.Fujariah.
C.The Gulf. D.Heard Island.
3、Which of the following may NOT benefit from the project?
A.The local people. B.Antarctica.
C.The weather. D.Tourism.
4、The author mentions the nature of ice in the last paragraph to show ________.
A.the process of the project B.the possibility of the plan
C.the purpose of the company D.the comments on the scheme

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear George,
I am delighted to hear that you want to take a course about Chinese traditional culture. I am writing to recommend one on Beijing Opera.
This course, “Introduction to Beijing Opera”, whic h will be held in Beijing next month for two weeks, contains two sections. A lecture on the history of Beijing Opera will introduce its time-honored development, including the detailed process of how it spread. What takes the course to a new height is a theater trip. Stepping into Mei Lanfang Theatre, you’ll get a taste of the performance techniques by appreciating how the voices and motions are perfectly combined on the stage.
I heartily recommend this course to you based on the following reasons. I know you love drama so much, so you will be able to more easily understand Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo, Chou, the five main characters of Beijing Opera. It is also an interactive course, in which you will have a chance to communicate with opera performers face to face.
I hope my introduction is helpful. Please let me know if you have further questions.
Yours,
Li Hua。
