1. Surfing (浏览) the Internet can be as addictive (上瘾的) as drugs, alcohol or gambling, a researcher from University of Pittsburgh said last month. In a study of almost 400 men and women in Canada, researchers found Internet addiction caused people to spend 40 hours or more a week online. Most of them often got involved in role-playing games or chat room discussion. One 17-year-old boy was so addicted to the Internet activities that his parents had to admit him to a hospital for 10 days´treatment. One woman was described by friends and family as a perfect wife and mother. She became so addicted to the Internet that she would not cook or clean and was neglecting her children and husband, because she was spending as much as 12 hours a day talking to people on the Internet. Finally her husband said, "Choose me or the computer. " She divorced him. Kimberly Young, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, found that 76 percent of the subjects(调查对象) in the study spend an average of 40 hours a week on the Internet. Of 396 people who met Young´ s criteria(标准) for addicted Internet users, 157 were men, 239 women. The men were younger with an average age of 29, the women average 43 years of age. The largest group of addicted users of the Internet was people who were not working outside home, housewives, students and those who were disabled(残疾) or retired.

6. Most people agree that the direct, assertive(过分自信的) American personality is a virtue, but it sometimes surprises foreigners. In many cultures, respect for older people or those in positions of authority keeps others from expressing their true feelings. But in the U. S. , children often argue with their parents, students may disagree with their teachers, and citizens may express opposition to the actions of the government. If the soup has anything in it or the meat is too tough to eat, the diner can complain to the waiter: if the boss makes a mistake, an employee will politely point it out. Some straight talk about the American character must include the admission that Americans have their faults. The extremely competitive nature of Americans is probably their worst fault. Of course, competition isn´t always bad. As a matter of fact, it promotes excellence by encouraging individuals and businesses to try to do their best. Btittne desire to get ahead of others sometimes causes people to do things that are unkind, arid even dishonest. Also, Americans admire what is practical, fast, efficient, and fresh. Sometimes they fail to understand and appreciate practices that have greater respect for more traditional, leisurely ways of doing things. On the other hand, people from other cultures may dislike the practical, challenging American lifestyle. Despite culture differences, most foreigners give Americans credit for their virtues. Americans are generally viewed as friendly, adaptable, energetic, and land-hearted. Most newcomers to the U. S. like Americans, and the feeling is usually mutual. Perhaps the greatest American virtue is a deep interest in new ideas and new people. In a nation of immigrants, the foreigner does not remain an outsider for long.

11. For many people, having your own business sounds like a perfect job. You can do work that you love. You can set your own business schedule and wear jeans to work. You never have to listen to a boss, and you make all the decisions yourself. You can even raise your salary any time you want. But the reality is different. " Having your own business can be lonely," says David Paik. After working for an advertising agency for six years, he started a website design business at home. His first income in the first two months was $ 0. Finally, he got a big project creating a website for a magazine. Then he had a new problem: his schedule. "I was working twelve hours a day, seven days a week, because I didn´ t have employees to help me." Today, Paik Web Design is successful, but David says, " I really wasn´ t prepared to be a business owner. I didn´ t understand the challenges. " Some of the challenges are practical. With no boss, it´s easy to take too much time off and get too little work done. With no co-workers, you might feel bored or lonely. You have to pay for your own benefits like vacations, insurance, and, a retirement plan. And if you make a bad business decision, you could lose all the money you invested. For all of the reasons, more than half of all new businesses fail within one year. Another problem is balancing work with personal life. As a business owner, you can´t just stop at 5 p. m. and forget about your work until tomorrow. " Even when I´m watching TV in the evening, I´m always thinking about my
clients and my projects," says David Paik. Still, hundreds of people around the world start business every day, and most enjoy the experience. "There are lots of advantages to having your own business," says Denise Williams, the owner of a women´ s clothing store. " You can decide exactly how to do your work, how much money you want to make, and who will work for you. " Williams borrowed money from family members to get her business started. She began by making and selling T-shirts in her apartment, and she has just opened a new, large store. Laura Castro, owner of a translation service, agrees. " When you are your own boss, there are no limits.
I started five years ago, translating Spanish and English. Now I have employees who work with six different languages. And five years from now? I can´ t imagine!" she smiles.

16. We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it. Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed—no examination is perfect—but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in examinations or in any controls in school or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on the values and the purpose of each teacher. Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them—a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from an ill-respected school can show certificates to prove he is suitable for a job, while the lack of a certificate indicates the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defense of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his school´ s reputation, unable to compete for employment with the child from the favored school. The opponents of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, different academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computer.
