Every four years, mentally disabled athletes come together to take part in the Special Olympics. Just like the regular Olympic Games, the events are surrounded by grand ceremony and competition is fierce, but there is also a strong sense of unity and friendship. Each athlete had had to train for many years and overcome fear and hardships to reach the games. For many of the Special Olympic athletes, simply taking part in the games is a victory. It is often seems as if the Olympic spirit is stronger at the Special Olympics than at the regular one: winning is not about being the first one across the finish line or scoring the most goals, but it is about being the best you can be.
Athletes at the Special Olympics are fighters in more than one way. Living with a mental disability is perhaps the most difficult challenge a human being can face in life. The disability makes everyday life difficult and society often fails to treat the mentally disabled with dignity and respect. For a long time, mental disability was considered shameful and the mentally disabled received little treatment or encouragement. Fortunately, we have now realized that there is much that can be done to help. The Special Olympics is one example of how society can improve the quality of life for all its citizens.
By preparing for and participating in the Special Olympics, mentally disabled children and adults can develop their ability to move, improve their health and gain greater self-confidence. The Special Olympics is also a good way to make friends. The first Special Olympics was held in Chicago in 1968. One thousand participants from Canada and the United States completed in three events. Since then, the Special Olympics has grown. At the 2003 Special Olympics in Ireland, more than 6,500 athletes from over 150 countries took part and there were 21 different sports. Interest in the Special Olympics has spread across the world and cities are now competing for the honour to host the event. In 2007, the Special Olympics were successfully held in Shanghai. Chinese athletes, their friends, parents and audience were proud of the great event.

During an exhibition showing the skills of disabled people, an armless man used his mouth and feet to repair a watch. He completed the task in just a few minutes at the show, which was held in Beijing last Saturday. Just imagine the tiny parts that make up a watch. You have to wonder how the disabled man developed such a skill.
It was reported that 28-year-old Wang Jianghai lost his arms in an accident when he was five and began learning to repair watches at the age of 17. He has repaired 10.000 watches in the past 11 years.
What strong self-confidence he must have to overcome the difficulties in getting this skill! What optimism he must have to face the unfairness of his hard life! And what strong determination he must have to go through the hardship in his struggle for a normal life! Such confidence, optimism and determination are exactly the qualities many physically healthy people lack nowadays. Wang has set a good example for young people.
But today’s youth seem to be more interested in their TV stars and pop singers but less interested in learning from the examples of working and studying hard to achieve higher goals. That is undoubtedly the result of the influence of a changing social atmosphere. One must admit that there is a trend towards hedonism in our society. People are increasingly more concerned about material gains than about spiritual ones. While adults know they must work hard whatever way they choose to materialize the gains, the younger generation are more likely to seek ease and comforts of their sense.
This pleasure-seeking trend provides a huge market for the entertainment industry and the mass media. The media devote too much coverage to stories of pop and TV stars, which in turn fans wider and stronger interest for entertainment among the public, especially young people.
Ours is a developing country. Global competition in the growth of national strength presents a demand for China to be quicker in its development. We cannot afford to lose time. We need to make our economy more powerful. To meet this need, all of us should value our tradition of working hard and overcoming difficulties.
1. A particular mention made of Wang Jianghai’s story in the first two paragraphs______.
A. serve as a description of the trend today
B. serve as an introduction to the discussion
C. shows a disagreement of views
D. shows the popularity of the TV stars and pop singers.
2. Which of the following is the reason for young people’s increasing interest in entertainment?
A. Young people have given up our traditional value of hard working completely.
B. Young people are not interested in learning from the examples of hard working at all.
C. Young people are taught by adults to seek pleasure of senses.
D. Young people are far too much influenced by too much entertainment news in media.
3. The underlined word “hedonism” (paragraph 4) means_____.
A. material gains
B. spiritual gains
C. thinking pleasure is the most important
D. amusement

Most parents, I suppose, have had the experience of reading a bedtime story 1 their children. And they must have 2 how difficult it is to write a 3 children’s book. Either the author has aimed too 4 ,so that children can’t follow what is in his (or more often ,her )story,
5 the story seems to be talking to the readers.
The best children’s books are 6 very difficult nor very simple, and satisfy the 7
who hears the story and the adult who 8 it. Unfortunately, there are in fact 9 books like this, 10 the problem of finding the right bedtime story is not 11 to solve.
This may be why many of the books regarded as 12 of children’s literature(文学) were in fact written for 13 . “Alice in Won d erland ” is perhaps the most14 of this.
Children ,left for themselves, often 15 the worst possible interest in literature. Just leave a child in a bookshop or a 16 and he will 17 willingly choose the books written in an unimaginative way, or have a look at the most children’s comics, full of the stories and jokes which are the 18 of teachers and right-thinking parents.
Perhaps we parents should stop trying to brainwash children into 19 our taste in literature. After all children and adults are so 20 that we parents should not expect that they will enjoy the same books. So I suppose we’ll just have to compromise(妥协)over the bedtime story.

China’s government is likely to reform its “golden week”holiday system and make public holidays of more traditional festivals by 2009, a Chinese tourism expert has revealed(透露)。
Zhang Hui, dean of the tourism administration department at Beijing International Studies University, said in a conference in Xiamen, east China’s Fujian Province, “The week-long May Day holiday would be shortened to one day and the National Day holiday to two days.” Zhang said the conclusion was drawn from discussions among tourism experts.
To make up for the lost holidays, experts suggested choosing three traditional festivals as public holidays, according to a story published in the China Youth Daily.
Zhang Hui said, “Experts all agree that Mid-Autumn Day should be set as a public holiday and
the government can choose two more from the Lantern Festival, the Tom-Sweeping Day, the Dragon-Boat Festival and Double Nine Day.”
“In addition, compulsory paid vacations, which might be written into the labor law, would be granted to employees.”
“Each person will have a basic seven-day paid leave a year, increasing by one day for every year of employment. The longest paid leave would not exceed 14 days.”
China has three “golden weeks”for the Spring Festival, Labour Day and National Day holidays. The “golden weeks” are actually only three days holiday as a weekend on one side of the holiday is designated (指定) as two working days.
“The Lunar New Year golden week would be kept”, Zhang added.
The week-long holidays were introduced in October 1999 to boost tourism and holiday consumption. But the economic scheme has also created travel peaks and a great threat to many heritage sites and scenic spots.
Earlier after this year’s May Day holiday, the China National Administration said it was considering increasing appeals for canceling the “golden weeks”.
The administration, however, pointed out that it would still keep the week-long holidays in place currently, as China’s social conditions are not mature enough to implement (弥补) paid vacations.

What makes a person a scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The an swer is “no”. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate(调查),how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works.
The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of his mathematics was later tested through investigations, Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations.

Nine-year-old Louis Pasteur rushed into the little house, his face white.
“Mother!” he cried. “A mad dog has bitten my friend Henry, and now they are burning him with red-hot irons (烙铁). It’s terrible!”
“Rabies (狂犬病), Louis. Burning the bites is the only hope of stopping Henry from catching the disease.”
Henry did get rabies and died, in great pain, some days later. Louis Pasteur never forgot. “One day,” he thought, “I must do something to help people like Henry.”
Sixteen years later Pasteur became a Doctor of Science. And he began making important discoveries in this special field.
Pasteur achieved great success in his life. But during the years of research he lost the use of his left arm and leg. Yet he worked on and on, as hard as ever, as he was eager to find a way for curing (治愈) rabies. He never forgot his friend Henry.
After many dangerous experiments on mad dogs, he finally found the answer. Just then a boy
who had been badly bitten by a mad dog arrived at his lab. A few days after Pasteur’s treatment, the boy got better. He did not catch rabies.
The discovery gave new hope to people in many countries. People sent money to help build the Pasteur Institute in Paris. Today it is one of the world’s most famous centers for research.
