Passage One
Once there was a kind doctor. He was a professor at a university in Paris. He was also a famous doctor. Every day many people came to his home for help. He was always ready to help. He often said to the rich, "Please give me some money to help the poor. They need my help." But none of them were really willing to help the poor.
One day, a poor woman came to him for help. She was so ill that she couldn't take care of herself. The doctor wanted to help her, but he didn't have enough knowledge to treat her illness. He asked her to wait for a few days.
At first, the doctor wanted to ask a famous doctor for help. Then, he thought of something. He went to the police. He said to them, "I know where a thief is, but I have to keep it a secret. I want to say that he is the woman's father. No one should arrest him. Please let me cure the woman first."
The police thought he was joking, but they did as he said because he was a famous doctor. The father of the woman was caught by the police, but the doctor cured her and the father.
It was also the happiest day for the father because he was a wanted criminal(罪犯). He was in love with the doctor because he was so kind. The doctor told him, "Don't be a thief again. You should work hard, and then you will get money. You should help others when you are rich."
