If you live in the United States, the law says you can’t have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40
hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can’t earn your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting (织) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Reisa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!
Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it; however, when you make your own money, you don’t have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.

The world itself is being much smaller by using modern traffic and modern munication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution es in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true.
Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.

In the kitchen of my mother’s houses there has always been a wooden stand(木架)with a small notebook(记事本)and a hole for a pencil.
I’m looking for paper on which to note down the name of a book I a m
remending to my mother. Over forty years since my earliest memories of the kitchen pad and pencil, five houses later, the current paper and pencil look the same as they always did. Surely it can’t be the same pencil? The pad is more modern, but the wooden stand is definitely the original one.
“I’m just amazed you still have the same stand for holding the pad and pencil after all these years.” I say to her, walking back into the living-room with a sheet of paper and the pencil. “You still use a pencil. Ca n’t you afford a pen?”
My mother replies a little sharply. “It works perfectly well. I’ve always kept the stand in the kitchen. I never knew when I might want to note down an idea, and I was always in the kitchen in these days.”
Immediately I can picture her, hair wild, blue housecoat covered in flour, a wooden spoon in one hand, the pencil in the other, her mouth moving silently. My mother smiles and says, “One day I was cooking and watching baby Pauline, and I had a brilliant thought, but the stand was empty. One of the children must have taken the paper. So I just picked up the breadboard and wrote it all down on the back. It turned out to be a real
breakthrough for solving the mathematical problem I was working on.”
This story—which happened before I was born—reminds me how extraordinary my mother was, and is, as a gifted mathematician. I feel embarrassed that I plain about not having enough child-free time to work. Later, when my mother is in the bathroom, I go into her kitchen and turn over the breadboards. Sure enough, on the back of the smallest one, are some penciled marks I recognize as mathematics. Those symbols have traveled unaffected through fifty years, rooted in the soil of a cheap wooden breadboard, invisible(看不到的)exhibits at every meal.

One evening in February, A student named Paula Ceely brought her car to a stop on a remote in Wales. She got out to open a metal gate that blocked her path. That's when she heard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Renault Clio parked across a railway line. Second later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometre down the railway tracks. Ceely's near miss made the news because she blamed it on her GPS device. She had never driven the route before. It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS. But it made no mention of the crossing. "I put my plete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train," she told the BBC.
Who is to blame here? Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely's story in his book When Machines Fail US, fingered at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, he says,
But our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it’s not just GPS devices: Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless key boards.
The problem with his argument in the book is that it is not clear
why he only focuses digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A map-maker might have left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention. Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for poor signaling system. Or maybe someone has studied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the G PS equipment. But Stevenson doesn’t say.
It’s a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account of the advanced techniques that criminals use to defeat puter-based locking systems for cars. He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says once again that not all new locks have proved reliable. Perhaps, but maybe it’s also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or some bination of these factors.
The game between humans and their smart devices is plex. It is shaped by economics and psychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be way a wiser use of technology.
If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortings of our machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just as long.
41 .What did Paula Ceely think was the cause of her ac cident?
A. She was not familiar with the road.
B. It was dark and raining heavily then.
C. The railway works failed to give the signal.
D. Her GPS device didn’t tell her about the crossing
42. The phrase “near miss”(paragraph 2) can best be replaced by _______.
A. close bit
B. heavy loss
C. narrow escape
D. big mistake
43.
Which of the following would Rick Stevenson most probably ag
ree with?
A. Modern technology is what we can’t live without.
B. Digital technology often falls
short of out expectation.
C. Digital devices are more
reliable than they used to be.
D. GPS error is not the only
cause for Celery’s accident.
44. In the writer’s opinion, Stevenson’s argument is________.
A. one-sided
B. reasonable
C. puzzling
D. well-based
45.What is the real concern of the writer of this article?

She pointed at the salami and bread I was buying and offered,“I can make you a sandwich,so you don't have to do it yourself.”So,she made the sandwich and asked me to wait a moment. She went in the back room and returned with a bowl of hot soup.

When the author, an oversea student, was badly ill, a shopkeeper made him a sandwich and offered hot soup. Feeling warm with her kindness, the author decided to be as kind as her.
Memories came flooding back when I read the story, with tears welling up in my eyes.
It was the early summer last year, when I was busy preparing for the highshcool entrance tests. Bored and tired, I felt so painful that I decided to quit. When I told my desk mate Li Hua about my decision, he said nothing but asked me to stay in the classroom after school. Though confused, I stayed. Then I began the two-month special course. Every day, he talked with me about his understanding of the classes for more than half an hour, which really helped me a lot and sent me here, the best highschool around.
Never will I forget Li Hua. Thanks to him, I understand friendship. And I miss him so much, for he is now studying in Shandong, so far away from me.
