Being late
I’ve been late for about thousands of times, most of which brought me both embarrassment and regret, but I’d never think that someday, somehow, that regret could too much to bear, until that day.
I was on my rotation in the department of cardiology, then. There were only two kinds of patients there. One was with mild cardiac problems, and came here just to avoid the annoyance at home. The other was with severe cardiac problems that were life-threatening. I thought I was lucky, since I was assigned to deal with the former ones, which also meant the most important thing I did everyday was just to tae their BP. On that day, I was doing my routine job. And an old lady said, “She did not sleep well last night, since she could not lie down. And now, she feel a little hard to breath.” And she lost consciousness shortly. My supervisor did the chest, and took an EKG for her. It turned out that the lady had an AMI, accompanied with heart failure. So they started to resuscitate her, I was just standing there, not knowing what to do. Then my supervisor bellowed, “go and find her relatives.” I dashed to the elevator. But it seemed the elevator was very slow, kept stooping on each floor, though sometimes no one came in. And it cost me quite a while to find that lady’ s husband, since I was not very familiar with the complicated corridors and stairs then. And when we came back, that old lady was gone.
Her husband didn’t say anything about my delay, actually. He just stood there, holding her wife’s hand. No one seemed to care about my being late. But I could not help thinking what if I had gone by the stairs, not the elevator, what if I knew the way and found her husband earlier, what if we got back in time and they finally saw each other, even for few seconds? What if? Millions of “what if ”filled in my head those days, I kept thinking I made that old lady die without accompany. But there’s no “what if ”in real life. And I had to erase those “what if”s, though it could not be done with an ease, or not at all.
