When I was young I wanted to be a model, so when a national contest was staged, I convinced my parents to take me for an audition(试演). I was selected and told I had potential. They said that for only $900 I could attend a weekend event which dozens of the most prestigious(有声望的)modeling agencies from around the world would attend. At l3, my hopes of fame and fortune clouded all judgment and I begged my parents to let me go. We had never been rich, but they saw my enthusiasm and agreed.
I imagined being signed by some famous model companies. For months, any boredom or disappointment I faced was pushed aside because I knew I would soon have the chance to be a real model. I thought I would grace the covers of famous magazines!
Of course, I wasn’t signed, but what hurt the most was being told that if I grew to 1.75metres.
I could be a success. I prayed for a growth spurt(冲刺)because I could not imagine giving up my dream. I made an appointment with a local modeling agency and the agent demanded $500 for classes. $500 for a photo shoot and $300 for other expenses. My parents only agreed after hours and hours of me begging.
The agency sent me out on a few auditions, but with every day I didn’t receive a call, I grew more depressed.
The final straw came in July after I had decided to focus on commercial modeling. There was an open call in New York City. We spent hours driving and another few hours waiting, only to be told that I was too short. I was devastated(感到难以承受的).
Years later, I realized that the trip to New York was good as it made me notice I didn’t actually love modeling, just the idea of it. I wanted to be special and I was innocently determined to reach an impossible goal. The experience has made me stronger and that will help me in the future.

For a parent, there’s nothing worse than seeing your child upset. No matter whether it’s big or small, temporary or permanent, it hurts to see them unhappy. As their parent, you want nothing more than to make the hurt or the sadness go away---- with hugs, kisses or a good old fashioned
talk. Sometimes, for kids, the things that can hurt most are words---- especially from their young peers. For my younger son w ho’s in kindergarten, the words that have always hurt him most throughout the preschool years are: you’re not my friend.
From the stories I’ve heard of life in the classroom and out on the playground, those four hurtful words are usually expressed when one friend feels wronged by another one. Perhaps one didn’t take turns on the climbing wall or another one didn’t want to sit and read a book together. Whatever the case, it always seems like the quickest and easiest way for these young minds to express their anger and hurt is to quickly lash out with their words. And , the ones they tend to say are: you’re not my friend.
But, what do those four words really mean? To my young son, he’s always taken it to heart and thought it to mean that the child really does n’t want to be his friend ever again. As a parent, I know the words are just words. And, that in no time , the children will once again be laughing and playing together in the classroom and out on the playground. But, to the child whose feelings are hurt, it’s hard for them to get past those four words.
But, I know that life as a child is more than just those four words. And, in reality, childhood friendships can and do last a lifetime and can be an inspiration to us all. So, with Valentine’s Day quickly a pproaching, I’m encouraging both of my sons to scrawl three words on each of the cards they hand out to their classmates or just say throughout the day: be my friend.
28.What makes kids feel upset is that ________.
A.they fail to find anyone to share their sadness
B.they hope to be understood by their parents
C.they can’t stand hearing some unkind words
D.they can’t get any words from their friends
29.What do parents think of the four words?
A.They bring deep hurt to their children
B.They really think little of the words.
C.They w ish t o find new words for them.
D.They try to stop kids talking like that.
30.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.the author is a famous expert in education
B.the three words are expected to be powerful
C.the kids will never have a fight in the future
D.the author hopes to be friends with many kids

D.I Don’t Want to Be Your Fiend

The Pew report---which was based on surveys carried out in Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Poland and the Czech Republic --- concluded that the European Union was “ the new sick man of Europe”.
The percentage of Europeans with a favorable view of the EU has plunged from 60 percent last year to 45 percent now.
The UK may be considered the most Eurosceptic(欧洲怀疑论者)country, but its support for the union has barely changed in the past 12 months, slipping only two points to 43 percent.
By contrast, France’s backing for the E U has slipped sharply, from 60 percent last year to 41 percent today.
On the question of whether to remain in the EU, 46 percent of the British want to leave the union and surprisingly, the same percentage want to stay.
The Pew report’s authors said, “The long-drawn economic crisis has created bad forces that are pulling European public opinion apart, separating the French from the Germans and Germans from everyone else.”
They added, “The effort over the past half century to create a more united Europe is n ow the main disaster of the euro crisis. The European project now stands in a bad reputation across much of Europe.”
The only European leader rated highly by their own voters was the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, with 74 percent voters in favor of her.
Prime Minister David Cameron was the next highest with a positive score of 37 percent among the British public, although he can take some comfort from the fact that 58 percent of Poles and half of all French people think he is doing a good job.
In spite of the dark economic future and growing doubt of the EU, there were strong majorities of more than 60 percent in favor of keeping the euro in the five countries surveyed that use the single currency.
32. Which of the following is TRUE about th e recent Pew report?
A. The UK has the smallest number of people against the EU.
B. There’s a slight change of the UK’s support for the EU.
C. More than half the Germans raise doubt about the EU.
D. A vast majority of French people are in favor of the EU.
33. As to whether to remain in the EU, ______.
A. The British are divided equally
B. few British want to stay
C. half British want to leave
D. many British don’t care about it
34. What’s the Pew report’s authors’ attitude towar ds the relation between France and Germany?
A. Enthusiastic.
B. Optimistic.
C. Negative.
D. Neutral.
35. Why does Prim Minister David Cameron feel a little bit comfortable?
A. Only a score of 37 percent of Britons go against him.
B. Many of the Poles and French think well of him.
C. More than 60 percent of the Europeans are in favor of keeping the euro.
D. Angela Merkel has 74 percent voters supporting her.

Heading off to college this year? 36
1. Dress to impress.
Stylist and business consultant Daniela Smith says, "Girls should keep in mind that your college professors will often be the bridge that connects you to your future career and your classmates will become your professional network. You don't need to dress like you're going to the office, but you should display an ability to properly present yourself with appropriate maturity and confidence."
2. Logo mania(品牌热症).
Wearing the logos of brands aimed at younger customers physically identifies you as part of
that age group, so consider the targeted age group of the stores you shop at. 37 But consider this: college is a time of self-discovery, a chance to develop your own personal style. Instead of wearing logos head to toe, "walking advertisement"-style, why not express who you really are?
3. Wear real pants.
38 Smith points out that leggings, yoga pants, and sweatpants are entirely unacceptable in public unless you're exercising. Although leggings worn as pants are a common trend among high school and college girls, they are not an appropriate choice for daywear. As a young woman, your style choice should begin to reflect your maturity level . 39
4. 40 .
Stay away from sweaters and T-shirts with smiling animals, cartoon characters, or Hello Kitty on them. Sure, kittens might be cute, but they're not doing you any favors in the style department. Dressing too cutesy can take years off your look, and not necessarily in a good way!
A. The combination of leggings and baggy shirts is all too common on college campuses.
B. Keep the cute factor to a minimum.
C. And every college student prefers to wear real pants.
D. It's tempting to load up on logos, especially well-known logos that signify (表示) high-end brands.
E. Here are some fashion tips from our experts you should keep in mind.
F. So, get rid of leggings and wear real pants!
G. Wearing the logos of bra nds means that the young customers have the chance to develop their personal character.
