13、Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 in Italy. He is best known as an artist today. One of his famous paintings is called Mona Lisa. However, Leonardo had many other natural abilities. It spread from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.
Traders travelling along the Silk Road carried silk, of course. They also carried and traded spices (香料), cloth, valuable stones and gold.
There is a famous old story along the old road. It is said that Roman soldiers travelled through central Asia. They started to live somewhere near the ancient Chinese village of Liqian, Some of these Romans married local Chinese women and the story of blue-eyed villages of China was started.
During its busiest period, the Silk Road allowed people from many different cultures and countries to meet each other and mix. The Silk Road allowed the sharing of valuable goods and new ideas. These included people and trading goods from the Mediterranean, Persian, Magyar, Armenian, Bactrian , Indian and Chinese areas. All these peoples travelled the Silk Road, and they shared goods, stories, languages, and cultures.
In modern times, the old Silk Road routes are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels and horses. There is even a Silk Route Museum in Jiuquan in China. 16、Imagine one day, the water taps (水龙头) in your house stop running. You have to pay a lot of money to buy water from shops. And still there isn’t enough water for everyone. Your mother has to save the family’s shower (洗澡) water to use for washing clothes. Then she has to use that same dirty water to wash other things. Would you be able to stand that kind of life? Probably not. But that’s what kids in Yemen are experiencing. Experts say Yemen is going to be the first country in the world to run out of water. According to a World Bank report, the capital, Sana, will run out of drinking water as early as 2025. Because of the water shortage (短缺) in Yemen, the government often cuts the water supply. Hannan, an 18-year-old from Lahej, told the Times, “In a good week we’ll have a water supply (供给) all week. But then the following week there will be water only for a day or two.”
Hannan said only rich people have enough water to use. They can buy water from the shops or from the water trucks. Private companies own the trucks. They travel around the city every day to sell water--- at very high prices. “A lot of people can’t afford it,” she said.
The average (平均的) person in Yemen uses 100 to 200 cubic meters of water per year. That is far below the international water poverty(贫困)line of 1,000 cubic meters.

17、A priest(牧师) had a cat that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The tree was not strong enough to climb, so the priest decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent(弯曲) down, he could then reach up and get the kitty. 18、It is reported that some developed countries have shipped (运往) broken parts of computers to China. Last month Hong Kong officers found 131,000 kilograms of broken computers, TVs and phones sent from Japan.
Things like these are called electronic waste, or e-waste. Dealing with them is not an easy job. Every time an old computer breaks down, it needs to be dealt with safely. What is worse, at present, broken computer parts are usually buried. It may be hundreds of years before they are really gone in the earth.
Many places in China are polluted by e-waste. Guiyu in Guangdong Province is one of them. This town is named as “the
e-waste capital of the world”. It has to deal with 1.5 million kilograms of e-waste each year, from which it makes 75 million yuan. But it comes at a cost.
Many of the poisons in e-waste find their way into the environment. An environmental group has found the air, the earth and the rivers in Guiyu badly polluted.
Luckily, the Chinese government wants to change the situation (情况) . This year, China passed a new environmental protection law. Computer companies like Lenovo and Dell will be asked to take back their old computers. Hopefully, the problem with e-waste will be solved in the near future.

19、Dear editor,
As we know, Chinese traditional culture is facing a great challenge because of the rapid development of international technology nowadays. In my opinion, it’s necessary for schools to set up traditional culture classes.
First, traditional culture is the root of Chinese. As Chinese, we shouldn’t give up our traditional culture and run after Wes tern
culture. Second, traditional culture classes can give students chances to know more about our nation. They can raise their sense of national pride. Last but not least, setting up traditional culture classes can spread and develop our Chinese culture.
All in all, it is of great importance to set up traditional culture classes in schools. Let’s call on more schools to set up trad itional culture classes!
Yours,
Mike。
