My Trip to West Lake
Hi, my name is Lily and I'm 9 years old. This summer, my family and I went on a trip to Hangzhou to see the famous West Lake. It was so much fun and I want to tell you all about it!
We left Beijing early in the morning on the high-speed train.
I was really excited because I had never been on a bullet train before. The train went super fast, over 300 kilometers per hour! It only took around 4 hours to get to Hangzhou, which seemed like nothing compared to driving there.
When we arrived, the first thing I noticed was how warm and humid it was compared to Beijing. My parents told me Hangzhou has a subtropical climate because it's down south. I was happy I wore lightweight clothes.
Our hotel was really nice and had a big swimming pool. I couldn't wait to go swimming later. But first, we headed out to explore West Lake. Just walking from the hotel to the lake, I
could tell Hangzhou was very green and beautiful with willow trees and flowers everywhere.
Finally, we arrived at the lake and I was amazed by how big it was! The lake covered so much area in the center of the city. The water was sparkling under the sun and looked so clear and clean. There were little islands and causeways crisscrossing the lake too. My little brother made a joke that the islands looked like giant lily pads floating on top of the water.
We first walked along the Bai Causeway, which was my favorite part. This long, narrow bridge stretched across the water with pretty pavilions and little gardens along it. The whole family had fun exploring the causeway and taking lots of pictures. We even got to see a newlywed couple taking their wedding photos on one of the small islands - their dress looked like a colorful cloud!
After the causeway, we rented a boat to go out onto the lake itself. The boat was wooden with red decorations and looked really traditional. Our boat guide rowed with an oar and told us stories about West Lake's history as we glided through the water.
I learned that the lake was man-made over 2000 years ago! People built dams and dykes to turn a small river valley into the
huge lake. The guide said the lake was so beautiful that it inspired many famous painters and poets over the centuries.
My favorite story was about the Lady of the Lake. Long ago, a brave woman named Xizi gave up her life for her village by drowning herself in the lake to pray for rainfall during a drought. The villagers were so grateful that they treated her as a goddess and left offerings like flowers on the lake for many years after. Even today, people leave little flower boats as offerings on one part of the lake called Huagang Park.
For lunch, we ate at a restaurant overlooking the water. We had a traditional Hangzhou dish called Dong Po pork that was first created over 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty! The crispy pork belly covered in a sweet soy sauce glaze was really delicious. I had never tasted anything like it before.
In the afternoon, we rented bikes and rode around the entire lake shore, which was about 15 kilometers in total. I had so much fun biking through Hangzhou's lush greenery and past all the historical sites like ancient temples and gardens. The paths were flat and easy to ride on. We even stopped for a snack of qiaokeji, which are special little rice cakes filled with sweet or savory fillings. Mine had a red bean paste inside and was so yummy!
On our last morning in Hangzhou before catching the train back home, we visited this really cool museum called the China National Silk Museum. I didn't know Hangzhou was famous for producing silk until we went there. I learned all about the life cycle of silkworms and how they spin their cocoons that get turned into silk thread. We even got to see expert embroiderers making beautiful silk art. My favorite was the giant embroidered dragon that looked so lifelike and intricate. I'll never take silk for granted again after learning the painstaking work required to produce it!
Overall, my family had an awesome time in Hangzhou sightseeing, biking, boating, eating delicious food, and learning about the history of West Lake. If you ever get a chance to visit this city, I highly recommend it! The lake is gorgeous and there's just so much to see and do in the surrounding area. I already told my parents we have to go back again soon because there's still more I want to explore. Thanks for reading about my trip!

My Trip to West Lake
Hi, my name is Lily and I'm 8 years old. I just went on the best trip ever to West Lake in Hangzhou, China with my mom, dad
and little brother Tommy. We had so much fun and I want to tell you all about it!
We took the bullet train from Shanghai which was really fast. Tommy kept saying "This is the fastest train ever!" over and over. The ride was only about an hour. When we got to Hangzhou, we took a taxi to our hotel right next to West Lake. As soon as we stepped out of the taxi, I could smell the fresh air and see the beautiful lake right in front of us. It was huge!
Our hotel room had a balcony with a view of the lake. I loved waking up in the morning and looking out at the pretty gardens, willow trees, and little boats on the water. The first day we just walked around the lake and took lots of pictures. My favorite was the Broken Bridge - it's an ancient bridge with a cool funny
zig-zag shape in the middle. Mom and Dad told us it was built that way on purpose a long time ago.
The next day we rented a boat to go out on the lake. We had to share the boat with some other tourists but that was ok. The guy rowing the boat told us fun facts about all the islands and bridges we passed. We got to go under a little bridge and Dad had to duck his head so he wouldn't bump it! Tommy thought that was hilarious.
On the little island called Xiao Ying Zhou they had amazing gardens with pretty bonsai trees, rock sculptures, and little streams. Tommy and I played a game where we had to hop from rock to rock across the stream. He slipped and fell in the water once which was pretty funny! After the gardens we had a snack of delicious sweet lotus seed bread. Yum!
The third day was my favorite day of all. We took a bike tour around West Lake and stopped at all the best viewing areas. Biking was a bit hard with all the hills but it was worth it. At one of the stops we hiked up to this amazing spot with a gorgeous view of three pools of water that looked like brushstrokes. Our guide told us it's called the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon. I will never forget how beautiful it looked.
We also biked over this bridge with little shops all along the sides selling things like fans, paintings, and carvings. Mom and Dad bought me a pretty silk fan that I'm going to hang in my room. For lunch we had a picnic in a bamboo forest and then I fed the leftovers to some little wild bunnies! I named one of them Thumper.
On our last day we just walked around the lake one more time taking it all in. I didn't want to leave! Hangzhou is such a pretty, peaceful place. I'm so glad we got to visit. West Lake was
amazing - I'll remember swaying willow trees, colorful gardens, friendly people, and sampan boats sailing on the shimmery water forever.
I feel so lucky that Mom and Dad took me and Tommy to West Lake. It was an incredible trip that I'll never forget. I can't wait to go back to Hangzhou again someday! Maybe when I'm older I'll even get married on one of those pretty bridges or islands in West Lake just like they do in the movies. A girl can dream, right? Well, that's the end of my travel journal. Thanks for reading about my awesome adventure!

My Amazing Trip to West Lake
Last summer, my family and I went on a trip to Hangzhou to visit the famous West Lake. I had heard lots of stories about how beautiful it was, but I was still stunned by how pretty it looked in real life!
We started our day bright and early by taking a bus from the city to the lake area. On the bus ride, I could barely sit still because I was so excited. I kept pestering my little brother by singing "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" over and over again until my parents told me to be quiet.
Finally, after what felt like forever, we arrived! The first stop was the Su Causeway, which is a bridge stretching across the lake. It was so long that I thought we'd never reach the end. But the scenery along the way was just breathtaking. Willow trees lined the sides, gently swaying in the breeze. Colorful boats drifted across the shimmering blue water. I couldn't believe places like this actually existed beyond picture books.
About halfway across, we stopped to rest at one of the little pavilions on the causeway. I got a cup of delicious coconut milk to sip while we admired the view. An artist was sitting nearby painting a picture of the lake, which I thought was so cool. I decided that when I grew up, I wanted to be an artist too so I could capture beautiful scenes like this one.
After walking what felt like a million miles, we finally made it to the other side of the causeway. Next, we visited the Leifeng Pagoda, which is this gigantic tower made of brick and wood. My dad told me it was over 1,000 years old! We climbed up to the top and got to see an amazing bird's eye view of the entire lake area. I felt like I was on top of the world up there.
The last stop of our trip was my favorite - we rented a boat to row around the lake ourselves! My dad did all the hard rowing work while my brother and I just relaxed and enjoyed the ride.
Gliding across that sparkling water surrounded by gardens, hills, and ancient temples was just magical. I'll never forget the peaceful feeling it gave me.
When our little boat voyage was over, I felt so sad to leave. I could have spent days and days exploring every nook and cranny around that lake. But I also felt so lucky to have been able to experience such a special place.
On the bus ride home, I summed up the trip by telling my mom "That was the best day of my entire life!" She just chuckled and said I say that after every fun family adventure. And she's right, I probably will say it again after our next trip. But for now, my amazing memories of West Lake will keep me smiling until then.

A Fun Trip to West Lake
Hello! My name is Lily and I'm a 3rd grade student. During our spring break, my family went on a really fun trip to West Lake in Hangzhou, China. I had such an amazing time and I want to tell you all about it!
We started our journey by taking the high-speed train from Shanghai to Hangzhou. I love riding on the train - it's so fast and smooth! The ride only took about 45 minutes. When we arrived at the Hangzhou train station, my dad hailed a taxi to take us to our hotel near West Lake.
As we drove through the city, I stared out the window at all the tall buildings and bustling streets. Hangzhou is such a big, modern city! But then we turned a corner and there it was - the beautiful West Lake! I pressed my face against the window, marveling at the huge lake with its willow trees gently swaying in the breeze along the shoreline. The taxi drove right alongside part of the lake and I could see families out strolling on the paths and little boats gliding across the water. I couldn't wait to explore!
We checked into our hotel room and dropped off our bags. After a quick lunch, we headed straight for the lake! Even though it's right in the center of the city, the area around West Lake feels like you've stepped into a peaceful nature park. There are so many pretty willow and peony trees lining the walkways.
Our first stop was the Broken Bridge - one of the landmarks West Lake is famous for. It's called the Broken Bridge because it doesn't actually make it all the way across the lake, but just
stretches partway out into the water. We walked along the
zig-zag bridge, taking lots of pictures of the lake and each other posing in front of the bridge. At the end, there are lots of rocks you can climb on right at the water's edge. I scrambled out onto the rocks, dipping my toes into the cool, clear lake water.
Next, we rented a boat so we could explore more of the lake from the water. Our boat was a traditional Chinese wooden boat with an upturned front painted in bright colors. We had an oarsman who rowed us all around the different areas of the lake. We drifted past willow trees trailing their branches in the water, under pretty arched bridges, and around little islands.
On one of the islands was a beautiful garden called Xiao Ying Zhou with pagodas, pavilions, and pathways winding through the manicured gardens. Our boat pulled over and we all hopped off to explore the island for a while. The gardens smelled amazing from all the fragrant flowers in bloom. I wandered along the paths, watching families feed the ducks and fish in the ponds, and old men playing chess under the pavilions. Before we left, I made sure to toss a coin into one of the ponds to make a wish!
After our boat ride, we walked along the lake's Bai Causeway - a long stone pedestrian path out over the water. I loved looking down at the lake on both sides of the path, watching the fish
swim around. We stopped to buy some snacks from a vendor - sugar dragonfruit and candied hawthorn berries that were absolutely delicious!
For dinner, we ate at a restaurant right on the lake that had outdoor seating on a terrace over the water. As the sun started to set, the lake looked like a sparkling mirror reflecting the golden sky. I took a bite of my sweet and sour pork, letting the sauces and flavors explode in my mouth as I gazed out at one of the most beautiful views I've ever seen.
The next day, we visited some more of West Lake's famous sites. We started at the gardens and pagodas of Lingyin Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the area. I was amazed by the brightly colored temples with their sweeping curved roofs and the towering pagodas covered in symbols and carvings. We spent a long time wandering through the beautiful gardens, watching the koi fish swim in the ponds and checking out the bonsai trees.
Then we visited Huagang Park on one of the islands in the lake's center. This park had more gardens, but it was most famous for the zigzag bridge with its many arched bridges and pavilions. We walked across the entire winding bridge, stopping
frequently so I could run ahead and pose with different sections of bridges and pavilions behind me for pictures.
Our last stop was Hefang Street, an old pedestrian area with historic buildings, shops and vendors lining the narrow lanes. This was my favorite part! We wandered through the bustling street, admiring all the traditional Chinese architecture. I loved looking at all the little shops selling artwork, pottery, silk robes, kites, and souvenirs. My parents let me pick out a few small trinkets to take home as mementos.
There were also lots of food vendors along the street selling all kinds of delicious snacks. We sampled lots of yummy treats like shrimp dumplings, BBQ skewers, stinky tofu, sweet rice balls, sugar cane juice, and my new favorite - egg tarts! The egg tarts were unbelievably creamy and flaky with a perfectly sweet egg custard filling. I must have eaten 4 or 5 of them, they were so good!
After spending a full day exploring Hefang Street, we were pretty tired so we headed back to our hotel. I didn't want our West Lake adventure to end! I had so much fun seeing all the beautiful scenery, historic sites and gardens. And the food was ridiculously delicious! I really hope my family and I can go back again someday. If you ever get a chance to visit Hangzhou and
West Lake, you have to go! You'll make amazing memories, just like I did.

A Fun Trip to West Lake
Hi everyone! My name is Amy and I'm in third grade. During our spring break, my family and I went on a really fun trip to West Lake in Hangzhou, China. I had such an amazing time and I can't wait to tell you all about it!
We started our trip by taking the high-speed train from Shanghai to Hangzhou. I love riding on the fast trains in China! As we zipped through the countryside, I pressed my face against the window to see all the beautiful green fields and little villages flashing by. The ride only took about an hour.
When we arrived in Hangzhou, the first place we visited was the famous West Lake. I had seen pictures before, but it was even more pretty in real life! The lake was huge and had water that sparkled like millions of diamonds under the sun. All around the shores were willow trees with long, flowy branches swaying in the breeze. There were also many amazing gardens, pagodas, bridges, and other cool places to explore.
Our first stop was Huagang Park on the west side of the lake. They had a really fun area there called "Amusement Wharf" with lots of games and snack stands. My little brother and I played this one game where you try to catch little goldfishies with a tiny paper net. It was super hard but I finally caught two! We also nibbled on delicious fried squidcustard and candied hawthorn berries.
Next, we took a boat tour all around the lake. Our tour guide told us that West Lake has been a famous scenic area for over 700 years! Scholars, artists, and even ancient emperors used to travel here to appreciate the beautiful views. As our boat glided across the peaceful waters, I could see why they loved it so much. The willow trees created a green tunnel over parts of the lake. We passed by little islands with ancient temples and pavilions perched on them. It felt like a real life garden paradise!
One of my favorite stops was Solitary Hill, which had the most amazing zigzag bridge winding across the water up to a little island. Our guide said the bridges and pathways were built to make the hill seem bigger than it really was. We climbed up and up, going over arch bridges and under shady alcoves until we reached the top. From there, we had an incredible view of the whole West Lake area!
Another fun spot was the area around Little Southern Lake. This smaller lake had fields of blooming lotus flowers that looked like floating plates. There were also large walkways and zig-zag bridges woven between pools full of colorful fish and waterfowl. We crossed over a bridge with hundred of carvings of flowers, birds, and mythical beasts all along the railings. I'd never seen anything like it!
On our last day, we hiked up Xizhao Hill to visit the Lingyin Temple, one of the largest Buddhist temples in China. The path was covered with ancient stone carvings and statues of Buddha teaching his followers. At the top of the hill were the magnificent temple buildings with bright yellow tiled roofs and towering pagodas. Inside we could hear the monks praying with their melodic chants. I felt so peaceful there.
After leaving the temple, we had one final stop to make – the museum of traditional Chinese medicine! I know that might not sound super exciting, but it was actually really fascinating. We learned all about the different herbs, minerals, and even bizarre ingredients like deer antlers that are used in Chinese remedies. We saw jars full of shriveled seahorses, dried centipedes, and gnarly fungi. In one room, they had a huge model of the human body with all the acupuncture meridian lines shown. My dad let
me try to feel his pulse according to the ancient techniques. Who knew pulses could tell you so much about your health?
By the end of our trip, we had walked over 10 miles exploring all the breathtaking sights of West Lake. I had so much fun everywhere we went, from the winding waterways to the exotic gardens and ancient temples. Hangzhou felt like being transported to an idyllic land of natural beauty and rich culture. I'll never forget the magical scenery and all the fascinating things I learned. I'm already dreaming about where my family should travel to next!

A Fun Trip to the West Lake
Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I'm a third grader at Sunny Hill Elementary School. During our last school break, my family took an amazing trip to Hangzhou to visit the famous West Lake. I had so much fun and I can't wait to tell you all about it!
We started our journey by taking the high-speed train from Shanghai. I was a little nervous because I had never been on a bullet train before, but it was actually really cool! The train went super fast, like an airplane on the ground. The seats were big and
comfy too. My little brother Tommy and I spent most of the ride playing video games and looking out the window at the scenery whizzing by.
After a little less than an hour, we finally arrived in Hangzhou! The first thing I noticed was how fresh and clean the air smelled compared to Shanghai. We took a taxi to our hotel which was located right next to the West Lake. As soon as I stepped out of the taxi, I could see the beautiful lake shimmering in the sunlight.
I was so excited to explore!
The next morning, we started our adventures around the lake bright and early. My dad had hired a tour guide named Lisa to show us around and teach us about the history of the area. Our first stop was the Su Causeway, which is a long bridge stretching across the west side of the lake. Lisa told us it was built over 700 years ago during the Song Dynasty! That's so old, I can't even imagine.
We strolled along the causeway, stopping to take lots of pictures of the willow trees gently swaying in the breeze and the little boats drifting across the lake. At one point, Lisa brought us to a pavilion in the middle of the causeway where we could see the whole lake laid out in front of us. The scenery was just breathtaking! Lisa taught us a famous saying about the West
Lake: "There is paradise above and, Su and Hang below." Meaning the lake is so beautiful it's like heaven on earth.
After walking the causeway, we visited a bunch of the famous gardens and temples surrounding the lake. I especially liked Lingyin Temple because of the tall statue of Buddha positioned inside a gently cascading waterfall. The entire temple complex was built into the side of a lush green hill covered in bamboo forests. It felt like we had stepped into another world!
For lunch, we had one of my favorite meals of the whole trip - a picnic right next to the lake! We got to sample lots of delicious local snacks like xiao long bao soup dumplings, lotus root snacks, and my new favorite - pastries with sweet bean filling. My dad also bought me and Tommy whistles made out of tiny gourds that made funny animal sounds. We had a blast running around the gardens after lunch, whistling away.
The next day, we took a boat tour out onto the West Lake itself. This was my favorite part! Floating out onto the middle of the lake gave us an amazing view of all the temples, pagodas, and greenery surrounding the shores. Our boat driver, who was dressed in traditional Song Dynasty clothing, even sang beautiful folk songs as he rowed us across the glittering waters. At one
point, he anchored the boat and let us go swimming! The water was cool and refreshing on the warm sunny day.
All too soon, our amazing West Lake adventures came to an end and it was time to head back to Shanghai. I had so much fun visiting the lake, strolling the causeways, exploring the ancient temples, and taking in the incredible scenery. Hangzhou is definitely one of the most beautiful and relaxing places I've ever been. I'm already dreaming about my next trip back to the picturesque West Lake!
I hope you all enjoyed hearing about my travels. Getting to experience amazing places and learn about different cultures is one of my favorite things about going on vacation. I feel so lucky that my parents love to take me and Tommy to discover new sights. Maybe someday I'll even get to travel around the whole world! But for now, the West Lake will certainly remain one of my all-time favorite destinations. Thanks for reading, and happy travels!。
