1) Read the poem to explain the literal meaning of the part and
2) analyze the image of Satan.
This is a speech given by Satan to cheer his followers (Beelzebub) up when they first awake from the fall in hell. Satan is not a bit discouraged and is planning to take revenge on god, whereas Beelzebub is wavering in his determination. Milton’s masterhand depicts a heroic figure of Satan who is a persecuted revolutionary in the poem. The indomitable revolutionary spirit is thus praised.
