Public speaking 英语演讲要求

Public speaking 英语演讲∙Definition: Public speaking is an important skill, not only for academic life, but also for life in theworkplace.∙Websites for public speaking: t his is the main website for NFL, (National Forensic League. It is an organization that governs debating in the U. S.) this website has audio files and/or text of the 100 most famous American speeches given in the modern era, one of which is “I have a Dream” by Martin Luther King.∙The types of speeches:∙Impromptu speeches: students will make a 3 minute speech on a variety of topics in which they have only two minutes of preparation. Impromptuspeeches don‟t use visual aids or note cards.∙Dramatic interpretation, poetry interpretation, prose interpretation, or humorous speeches: Students will select a passage from a piece of literature, memorize it, and then give a brief introduction to it and dramatically recite itfrom memory in front of the class. (5 to 8 minutes)∙Original oratory: Students will research and write a speech on a topic of their choosing, and memorize it. Notes: many orations deal with a currentproblem and propose a solution, and yet, this is not the only acceptable formof oratory. Your oration may simply alert the audience to a threateningdanger, strengthen its devotion to an accepted cause, or eulogize a person. Anorator is given free choice of subject and judged solely on the effectivenessof development and presentation.∙Oral Presentation RubricHere are some of the things that you should keep in mind when giving oral presentations and speeches. Teachers use many of the following criteria to evaluate your speeches. Please note that some of the following items don‟t pertain to certain types of speechesDelivery:This section assesses how well the presentation is “delivered.”It includes the following areas:∙Speech style: What style of delivery does the speaker employ: does he or she read his presentation from a script or does he or she use note cards or anoutline as a memory prompt and then speak extemporaneously, or does he orshe speak solely from memory? The scripted style is more accurate but notvery dynamic or engaging. The extemporaneous style is more flexible andmore dynamic but can result in errors from a faulty memory. Thememorized speech is the most flexible, but also the most prone to committingerrors.∙Eye contact: Does the presenter establish eye contact with the audience throughout his/her presentation? Good eye contact can help to establish agood rapport with the audience and keep their attention focused on thespeaker.∙Voice Quality: This includes the volume of the spea ker‟s voice, how well the speaker projects his or her voice, and the tone and pitch of the speaker‟svoice.∙Non-verbal gestures: Speakers communicate not only with the words they speak, but also with their bodies and their gestures. Hand gestures, facialgestures, and body posture are some of the things that can enhance apresentation or detract from it if not used effectively.∙Repetition: Does the speaker repeat words, phrases to excess? Some key concepts or key vocabulary items in a presentation are worthy of repetition;other times, nervous speakers tend to be overly repetitious, which causes thepresentation to drag and become tedious. Also, does the speaker use “vocalpauses” excessively?Vocal pauses are words or phrases such as “um,”“uh,” “okay,” “all right,” “you know,” and the ubiquitous “like” that thespeaker unconsciously uses to fill in any pauses in his or her presentation).∙Interactivity: Does the presenter attempt to include his audience by asking questions, making them perform exercises, or discussing? Most forms ofdebate have little if any interactivity in them.∙Length: Is the presentation of appropriate length? Overly long presentations or presentations that are tooShort may adversely affect the quality of the presentation.English ability:This section assesses the speaker‟s English ability during the presentation:∙Pronunciation: This assesses both a speaker‟s “accent” as well as his or her ability to pronounce English words correctly and apply appropriatestress. Ac cent refers to how much a speaker‟s first language interferes withhis or pronunciation of English sounds (e.g. …th‟ sounds, …l and n‟ sounds, …r‟sounds, etc.)∙Oral fluency: This assesses the rhythm and rate of the speaker‟s English. Does the presenter speak too slowly or too rapidly?∙English Grammar: Does the speaker have a command of Englishgrammar? Does the speaker make many mistakes in syntax or morphology?(e.g. misuse of the articles …the‟ …a‟ and …an‟, misuse of non-count nouns (e.g.“many informations” or “stuffs”), or lack of agreement (e.g. “Everybodyturned in their test.”)∙Vocabulary: Does the speaker have a broad range of English vocabulary in his or her lexicon? Does he or she use these words accurately?∙Overall intelligibility: Is the speaker comprehensible? This refers to how a presenter‟s pronunciation, oral fluency, and use of English grammar combineto make him or her understandable to his or her audience.Use of Materials: This section applies to how well the presenter uses materials and visual aids to enhance his or her presentation. In most instances, visual aids are extremely valuable at reinforcing what the speaker says. Naturally, in some types of speeches, the speaker is not allowed to use visual aids (e.g. impromptu speeches, original oratory, and policy debates).∙Visual Aids: Does the presenter use handouts, visual aids (e.g. the blackboard, posters, photos, etc.), and/or other devises (e.g. computer, tape-recorder,PowerPoint, realia1) to improve the quality of the presentation?∙Accuracy and relevance of materials: Is the information accurate and relevant to his or her topic?∙Use of articles: Does the presenter give the audience a useful article that contains information relevant to his or her presentation?∙Future use of the materials given to the audience: Are the materials user-friendly so that the audience can use them at a future date? I.e. does theauthor explain and describe his terms or does he or she just give the audiencean outline of the presentation and expect them to fill in the outline with theirown notes?Content: Is the presentation informative and relevant to the topic? Content is assessed in the following ways:∙Accuracy: Is the information accurate?∙Relevance: Is the information relevant to the speaker‟s assigned topic?∙Support: Does the speaker support his main points with facts, statistics, examples, quotations, or anecdotes?∙Weight of content: Does the presenter spend the most time on the most important parts or does he or she get bogged down in less important parts ofthe presentation? This is more important in a longer presentation and in agroup presentation.∙Overall Quality of the content: At the end of the presentation, has the audience learned a lot about your topic? Have you taught the audienceanything that is informational, useful, and relevant?Organization of Ideas: Is the content well organized and does it flow smoothly from one idea to the next? Are the main points ordered in order of importance or chronologically?∙Attention-grabbing introduction: Does the speaker begin with some kind of attention-grabbing question, anecdote, example, fact, or statistic?∙Tell-tell-tell structure: Does the speaker repeat the main idea of the speech three times? First, he should introduce his thesis in the introduction, thenreinforce it in the body of his speech, and finally re-phrase it in hisconclusion.∙Three main points: The speaker should give three main points that support his thesis. Each main point should be explained and then supported with facts, statistics, examples, quotations, or anecdotes.∙Transitions: Does the speaker use transitions to smoothly connect his ideas. Transitions can be organizational connectors (e.g. First of all,Secondly, My final point is…, In conclusion, et c.) or logical connectors (e.g.On the other hand, In contrast, In addition to, Consequently, Therefore, etc.)Here are five general tips for a successful speech:1. Practice, practice, practice! If you are giving a prepared speech, then you need to practice your speech frequently. First, practice by yourself or in front of a mirror. Then practice your speech in front of a parent or friend (and have them time your speech). Finally, give a dress rehearsal using all of your visual aids. Even if you are giving an impromptu speech, you can practice various topics on your own or in front of friends.2. Try to relax before giving the speech. I know that this is easier said thandone. Most speakers get very anxious before speaking, but remember that it‟s no big deal—it‟s only a speech and everyone gets nervous before giving a speech. One thing that you can do is to repeat the following relaxation technique three times: take a deep breath through your nose and then exhale it slowly through your mouth. Try it,you‟ll feel better!3. Don’t talk too fast when delivering your speech. If you slow your rate of speech down, you can accomplish several things:1) You can reduce the number of vocal pauses in your speech (e.g. “uh”, “um”, “okay”, “you know”)2) It gives you time to think ahead so that you know what to say next3) It makes your speech seem more relaxed and fluent** Don‟t slow down too much or it will sound awkward and unnatural4. If you make a mistake, don’t draw attention to it. Don‟t stop your s peech to correct your mistake, apologize for it, or draw attention to your mistake. Just try to continue on with your speech as if nothing happened. Chances are, no one noticed your mistake anyway.5. Look outwardly confident and enthusiastic. Even if you feel nervous and depressed on the inside, try to look confident and enthusiastic on theoutside. Remember that when you give a speech, you‟re kind of like an actor—so …act‟ confident.People will be able to enjoy your speech if they think that you are enjoying your speech. If they see that you are excessively nervous and uncomfortable, they will also feel nervous and uncomfortable.Example Impromptu topics:∙You are an ant. Convince an anteater to not eat you.∙Explain three different ways to eat an Oreo cookie.∙Tell us about a nickname you have and how you got it.∙Convince us to vote for you as president of the USA.∙Explain three uses for a pencil besides for writing.∙Read us a letter you might write home when you are staying at a circus training summer camp.∙Tell us about your summer plans.∙Convince us that homework is harmful to your health.∙Tell us about your favorite pet and why it should win the Greatest Pet Ever award.∙If you were an animal, what would you be?∙You are a salesperson trying to sell us the shirt you have on.∙Explain how a smart person might not be wise.∙If you were the teacher, how would our class be different?∙Tell us about the hardest thing you have ever done.∙You are a mad scientist. Tell us about your latest invention.∙You are a famous sports player. Describe your best moment of a game.∙You are a famous rock star. Be sure to∙Identify the type of hat that is required.∙You are a piece of paper. Describe how we should use you before you get recycled.∙Explain how to make a pizza.∙Explain four uses for a drinking glass other than for holding a liquid.∙Convince our principal to give students their birthdays off of school.∙Describe how you would modify a snail so it can go faster.∙Explain the best way to teach an old dog a new trick.∙Describe the life cycle of a frog or butterfly.Quotations used for Impromptu Speeches“Before God we are all equally wise—and equally foolish.”--Albert Einstein“I never think of the future—it comes soon enough.”--Albert Einstein“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”--Albert Einstein“The important thing is not to stop questioning.”--Albert Einstein“Truth is what stands the test of experience.”--Albert Einstein“A friend is a second self.”--Aristotle“A flatterer is a friend who is your inferior, or who pretends to be so.”--Aristotle“Happiness depends upon ourselves.”--Aristotle“It is in justice that the ordering of society is centered.”--Aristotle“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”--Aristotle“Law is mind without reason.”--Aristotle“Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime.”--Aristotle“We are what we repeatedly do.”--Aristotle“Misfortune shows those who are not really friends.”--Aristotle“Man is by nature a political animal”--Aristotle“A joke is a very serious thing.”--Winston Churchill“History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.”--Winston Churchill“The price of greatness is responsibility.”--Winston Churchill“Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.”--Winston Churchill“When the eagles are silent, the parrots begin to jabber.”--Winston Churchill“A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.”--Mark Twain“Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”--Mark Twain“Clothes make the man.Naked people have little or no influence on society.”--Mark Twain“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.”--Mark Twain“I am not young enough to know everything.”--Oscar WildeMorality, like art, means drawi ng a line someplace.”--Oscar Wilde“An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”--Mahatma Gandhi“Forget injuries, never forget kindness.”--Confucius“I hear and I forget. The Art of Public Speaking

The Art of Public Speaking1 INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC SPEAKINGPeople throughout history have used public speaking as a vital means of communication and empowerment. Because you will live the rest of your life in a globalized world, the need for English public speaking will almost surely touch you at some time.To be successful giving speeches in English, you need to be a culturally competent communicator. You must show respect for the cultural values and expectations of the people who come to hear you. This does not mean that you have to devalue you own culture. There is no inherent conflict between being a competent English public speaker and being fully Chinese.Because public speaking involves the use of English as a working language, it requires critical thinking skills. Critical thinking helps you organize your ideas, spot weaknesses in other people’s reasoning, and av oid them in your own. There are many similarities between public speaking and conversation, but there are also important differences. First, public speaking requires more detailed preparation than ordinary conversation. Second, it requires more formal language. Third, it demands that speaking adjust their voices to the larger audience and work at avoiding distracting physical mannerisms and verbal habits. The speech communication process includes seven elements: speaker, message, channel, listener, feedback, interference, and situation. The interaction of these elements determines the outcome of any public speech.2 SPEECH PREPAREATION: GRTTING STARTEDStage fright is as an issue for public speakers in all countries. Rather than trying to eliminate every trace of stage fright, you should try to transform it into positive energy. To some extent, this will happen naturally as you again experience as a speaker, but you should also think positively, prepare thoroughly, visualize yourself giving a successful speech, remember that most nervousness is not visible to the audience, and think of your speech as communication rather than as a performance in which you must do everything perfectly.Because public speaking is a form of power, it carries with it heavy ethical responsibilities. There are four basic guidelines for ethical speechmaking. The first is to make sure your goals are ethically sound. The second is to be fully prepared for each speech. The third is to be honest in what you say. The fourth is to put ethical principles into practice at all times.Of all the ethical lapses a speaker can commit, few are more serious than plagiarism. Global plagiarism is lifting a speech entirely from a single source.Patchwork plagiarism involves cutting and pasting a speech from a limited number of sources. Incremental plagiarism occurs when a speaker fails to give credit for specific quotations and paraphrases that are borrowed from other people.Because it is so easy to copy information from the Internet, it poses special challenges with regard to plagiarism. If you don’t cite Internet sources, you are just as guilty of plagiarism as if you take information from print sources without proper citation. As you research your speeches, be sure to take accurate notes of the Internet sources you use so you can identify them in you speech.3 SPEECH PREPARATION: ORGANIZING AND OUTLININGOne of your first assignments will be to present an introductory speech, either a speech of self-introduction or a speech introducing a classmate. Focus the speech on a limited number of ideas and be creative in developing them. Use interesting supporting materials and present them in colorful, descriptive language. When organizing the speech, make sure you have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Most introductory speeches fall naturally into chronological or topical order. Using clear transitions will help your audience follow you from point to point.Although you will write a complete manuscript or outline of your speech when preparing it, you should deliver it extemporaneously. This means you have rehearsed fully and can present you talk from a brief set of speaking notes. Concentrate on establishing eye contact with the audience and on speaking in a dynamic, engaged tone of voice.4 PRESENTING THE SPEECHThe first step in speechmaking is choosing a topic. If you have trouble picking a topic, you can use clustering, a personal inventory, or an Internet search to come up with something that is right for you.The general purpose of your speech will usually be to inform or to persuade. When your general purpose is to inform, your goal is to persuade, your goal is to communicate information clearly, accurately, and interesting. When your general purpose is to persuade, your goal is to win listeners over to your point of view.Once you know your topic and general purpose, you must focus on a specific purpose statement that indicates precisely what your speech seeks to achieve. The specific purpose statement should (1) be a full infinitive phrase; (2) be worded as a statement, not a question; (3) avoid figurative language; (4) not be vague or general; (5) be appropriate for your audience; and (6) be achievable in the allotted time. The central idea is a concise statement of what you will say in your speech, and it usually crystallizes in your thinking after you have done your research and have decided on the main point. In most cases, it encapsulates the main points in a single declarativesentence.5 V ARIETIES OF PUBLIC SPEACKINGGood speakers are audience-centered. When working on your speeches, keep three questions in mind: To whom am I speaking? What do I want them to know, believe, or do as result of my speech? What is the most effective way of composing and presenting my speech to accomplish that aim?People are egocentric. They typically approach speeches with one question uppermost in mind: “Why is this important to me?” Therefore, you need to study your audience and adapt your speech to their beliefs and interests. The major factors to consider in audience analysis are size, physical setting, demographic traits, disposition toward the topic, disposition toward the speaker, and disposition toward the occasion. For speeches outside the classroom, you can get information about the audience by asking the person who invites you to speak. For classroom speeches, you can circulate an audience-analysis questionnaire.Once you complete the audience analysis, you must adapt your speech so it will be clear and convincing. Try to hear the speech as your listeners will. Anticipate questions and objections, and try to answer them in advance. When you deliver the speech, keep an eye out for audience feedback, and adjust your remarks in response. After the speech, think about your audience’s res ponse and about changes you would make if you were delivering the speech again.References:[1] Stephen, E, Lucas. The Art of Public Speaking[M]. 公共英语演讲范文

公共英语演讲范文Introduction to the Course – Public SpeakingGood ladies, morning and gentlemen. What’s wrongDid you realize I just made a mistake in my greetingYou may wonder why I would make such a silly mistake. You tell me why. Well, I was kind of nervous. Now you may wonder how e a teacher of my age would feel nervous facing the students. To tell you the truth, all the public speakers, including most eloquent ones like Barak Obama, Ronald Reagan, would feel nervous on the stage. And more often than not, nervousness may well make speakers mit silly blunders. This is caused by what we call stage fright/fear.As a veteran teacher of English I find Chinese students usually feel reluctant to make a public speech whether in Chinese or in English. The main reason for this is Stage Fright, because they are not or less trained in delivering a public speech. You may have the impression that foreigners especially Americans are good at talking, particularly in public. This is because Public Speaking is a pulsory course in most of the American universities. As a matter of fact, kids are encouraged to make presentationsin class even in their primary schools. So to help you overe this barrier, we opened this course four years ago and this is the fifth round. For t he next 30 minutes, I’d like to specify 4 things related to the course. They are five purposes of opening this course; the way the class will be conducted and the teaching schedule; the requirements for you to meet; and the position of the final score.Let’s start with the five purposes, the first of which is to help you acquire the basic skills in preparing and delivering a speech effectively. There are nine things to keep in mind in this regard.1. How to choose a topic. If it is a classroom presentation and your audiences are your fellow students, you need to select an appropriate topic to attract them. But in future you don’t have to choose a topic as, most likely, you will be asked to talk about a particular subject, unless you want to enter for a speech contest.2. How to write an outline of a speech. Actually in most cases you are supposed to write two outlines, one is called preparation outline, which is more detailed and is done for the writing of your speech; the other is called speaking outline, which is brief and used for the delivery of your speech.3. How to organize a speech. In organizing a speech you need to know what to say in the introduction, how to balance the main points in the body and what to say in the conclusion.4. How to make your vocal language more effective. You have to watch five aspects: pronunciation, vocal variety, rhythm, fluency, and volume.5. How to use verbal language effectively. In this aspect, you will learn to make good choice of words, and use appropriate grammar and rhetorical devices.6. How to use non-verbal language effectively. This includes such elements as eye contact, facial expression, gestures, and posture. Among these, eye contact is the most important.7. How to use visual aids in an effective way. For visual aids, you are supposed to use ppt. only, and oasionally a short video clip which should last no longer than 1 minute.8. How to practice and rehearse for a speech. Enough practice and rehearsal will ensure you a suessful speech.9. How to prepare answers to possible questions from the audience. Afterthe speech, the speaker should be ready to take questions from the audience. The speaker should prepare answers to possible questions before delivering the speech. The second purpose is to help you find and then overe your problems in making a public speech. As some of you might already have known, our course is practice-oriented, which means you are supposed to make a lot of presentationsafter learning the theory and watching samples. However, for most of the time you will be audience only. As audience, you will find the problems of the speakers as it’s human nature to find faults with others. I want you to be particular or picky while listening and get ready to make ments. By analyzing the speeches of others, you will consciously avoid similar mistakes in your own performance and consequently perfect your own speeches. Now let’s e to the third purpose, which is to help you overe stage fear. Stage fear ranks very high on the list of all fears aording to some statistics. I remember reading an article saying the stage fear ranks the second among allthe human fears. As I said in the introduction, everyonehas stage fright, no matter how experienced he/she is. In other word s, it’s perfectly normal to feel nervous when standing on a platform facing a relatively large audience. To overe stage fear, there are at least five effective ways, namely, acquiring speaking experience, making full preparation, thinking positively, using the power of visualization and not expecting perfection. Although this course only allows you two opportunities for practice in class, you will have to practice dozens of times outsidethe classroom before each presentation. Whether you can doa good speech in class largely depends on how well you practice before the class. Full preparation includes thepreparation of the outline, the speech draft, the practice and rehearsal with the help of speaking outline. When you are actually standing on the platform, tell yourself “Ican do it, I will make it,” instead of saying either to yourself or to the class, “I am too nervous. I will not be able to make it” You should visualize yourself as a suessful speaker, with the audience applauding and cheering. Lastly, never expect to be perfect. Nothing is perfect, no one is perfect. In other words, tolerate your shortings and oasional errors. Remember your actual performances usually will not surpass your practice in rehearsal.Purpose number four is to help you prepare for your future academic and professional life. Some day you will e across the situations where you are required to make apublic speech whether you stay in school or work in other social institutions. For now, classroom presentations are what you face while you are in college. And seminars and symposiums are oasions for yourfuture academic studieswhere you are very likely to be asked to make a presentation, while oral thesis defenses are what you will have to go through before your graduation. In your future professional life, you are likely to be asked to write and present business or work reports or promote products to clients. And it is not unlikely that a few of you will turn to politics in the future, in which case skills of publicspeaking would appear exceedingly important. Besides, inthe globalization environment, with the cross-cultural intermunication growing rapidly, there will be oasionswhere you will attend ceremonies of various kinds and makea speech. Here es the last purpose, which is to help you build confidence and advance your personal image. Through practicing and training, you may improve your way of municating your ideas orally to a group of people, whichwill naturally help boost your confidence. And the abilityto beautifully deliver a speech in public will undoubtedly upgrade your self-image and will make you more popular anywhere you go.Ok, those are the five main purposes of opening this course. Some of you may wonder why I didn’t include “to help students practice their spoken English”. Well, spoken English is another course, as having a conversation is different from making public speeches. As a matter of fact, a relatively better mand of oral English is required of those who want to take this course. In a way, it’s mor e a speech course than a language course. Now let’s move on to how this course will be conducted and the teaching schedule.First, this course will integrate theory into practice, with focus on practice. To be more exact, the first four classes will be devoted to theory. The theory will be basedon the lecture notes which you’ll find in our class email box. (I’ll show it to you later.) The lecture notes are based on the book The Art of Public Speaking by Stephan Lucas. And we’ll illustrate the theory wit h examples, either verbal or visual. After the first few weeks of theory learning, volunteers will be assigned a speech, upon which I’ll make some ments in order to consolidate what you have just learned. The 2 sample speeches will take two classes.Second, the remaining 10 classes will be used for classroom presentation. Each student is required to give two speeches, one is informative, the other persuasive. Four students will make speeches each week. Both teachers and students are to ment on their performances. Each speech is a 10-minute talk, followed by 10 minutes for Q & A and 2 minutes for grading. As you can see, more time will be spent on practice rather than on theory. That is why we call it practice-oriented. To make our practice more effective, you are supposed to meet some requirements. To make our class more effective and efficient, you are to fulfill the following 14 requirements.1. Don’t skip classes and don’t be late. Or you’ll be punished. In the latter part of the speech you’ll know how.2. Be attentive in class. In this class, you’ll play many roles other than a listener. You are also a questioner, mentator and a judge as well.3. Prepare and pose the speech well and well in advance. The platform is to the speakers what the stage to theactors and actresses. A minute on thestage means days of hard work off the stage.4. Every speech should be written yourself. You are not allowed to copy the whole thing from the inter. If you do quote something, you need to mention it in bibliography, which is supposed to be displayed at the end of a speech.5. Practice and rehearse fully until you can make the speech with confidence. Remember a lot of practice will always give a boost to your confidence.6. Don’t bring the spee ch draft or the preparation outline to the stage. You can make a speech with your speaking outline only.7. Limit your speech to ten minutes. Or the assessmentof your presentation will be affected.8. Don’t use too many slides in your ppt. 12 will suffice for a 10-minute talk.9. Don’t play any video clip that lasts longer than 1 minute.10. Hand in the preparation outline a week before your speech. Be sure it is the printed work instead of thehandwritten one. Meanwhile, your speech draft and speaking outline are supposed to be submitted on line a week before the performance. A record will be kept about the time of submission. And late submission is not allowed.11. Try to look at the audience and make eye contact as often as possible. This will contribute a lot to the scoring.12. Print your evaluation charts and bring them to class from the fifth week on. You are the judge, rememberYou need something to keep the record of each speech.13. Discuss others’ speeches with group mates and grade them carefully and fairly. Your class will be broken down into groups of 4 and the group leader is responsible for the calculation of the average score of each speaker.14. Don’t ask me to revise your score. In order to follow the principle of fai r play, don’t ask me to change your score for any reason. There might be some other requirements along the way. I’ll let you know when they e up. Now let’s look at the last main point which you might be more concerned about --- grading. The total score is posed of 3 parts: the first speech, 40% of the total score; the second, 45% (of each speech, your grading will aount for 30%, while mine, 70%); classperformance, 15%, including attendance and participation, with attendance aounting for 7 points, and participation 8 points. If you are absent from one class for no reason at all, one point will be deducted and if you are late for one class, half a point will be deducted. And you can’t e into the classroom until the end of one speech, that is, when you hear the applause. By participation we mean you have to be actively involved in Q&A and ment session. Your performance will be recorded based on the quality of your questions and ments. In terms of grading the speech, you need to know how to evaluate the performance of your fellow students. Nowlet’s look at the evaluation chart.Evaluation ChartClass Group DateName of speaker Name of evaluatorYou are required to grade the first 6 of the 7 items. Please note that each item has different percentage of the total score. Following are the descriptions of each item to be evaluated that you should pay attention to when grading.1. Vocal Effect includes pronunciation, vocal variety, fluency, clarity, volume, pacing (rhythm), among which vocal variety and pacing are the most important and so take a larger share of the grade.2. Verbal Language includes grammar, auracy, appropriateness, and vividness.3. Structure refers to the organization of a speech and effectiveness of each part, namely opening, body and ending.4. Body Language contains eye contact, gesture, facial expression, and posture.5. Visual Aid mainly includes ppt. or video clips. Each ppt. should have a limited number of slides, preferably 12 slides for a 10-minute speech.6. Overall Effect refers to the general impression a speech leaves on the audience. When grading this part, you should consider whether the speech is informative enough --- containing new, interesting, helpful information, or whether a persuasive speech is convincing enough --- including whether the speaker speaks with passion; whether the speaker uses rhetorical devices in the speech; whether you, as audience, are moved, inspired or persuaded and so on. This part also includes Q&A, where attention should be paid to whether the speaker understands the questions and repeats it to the audience and whether he/she answers the question satisfactorily and in a good manner.7. Outline is left for the teacher, that is, I will grade item 7 after you hand in your preparation outline. It is my great honor to be with you today for the mencement.First of all, please allow me, on behalf of all the graduate students, to show ourappreciation to all the teachers who have been teaching and guiding us in the past four years in this departmentand this school. 以在大众面前演讲为主题的英语作文

以在大众面前演讲为主题的英语作文Delivering a powerful and engaging speech can be a daunting task, but with the right preparation and mindset, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience. As someone who has had the opportunity to speak in front of large audiences, I can attest to the transformative impact it can have on both the speaker and the audience. The act of public speaking requires a delicate balance of confidence, vulnerability, and authenticity. It is not merely about reciting a scripted monologue, but rather about creating a genuine connection with the audience and conveying a message that resonates with them on a deeper level. When done well, a speech can inspire, educate, and even change the way people think and behave.Preparation is key when it comes to delivering a successful speech. It is important to thoroughly research the topic, understand the audience's needs and expectations, and craft a compelling narrative that captures their attention from the very beginning. This involves carefully organizing your thoughts, developing a clear and logical structure, and incorporating engaging storytelling techniques to keep the audience engaged. One of the most crucial aspects of preparing for a speech is rehearsing. Practicing your delivery, fine-tuning your pacing, and honing your vocal inflections can help you feel more confident and polished when it's time to take the stage. It's also important to anticipate potential challenges or questions that may arise during the Q&A session and to be ready to address them with confidence and clarity.Beyond the practical aspects of preparation, there is also a significant emotional and psychological component to public speaking. Overcoming the natural feelings of anxiety and self-doubt can be a daunting task, but it is essential to approach the experience with a positive mindset and a genuine desire to connect with the audience. One strategy that can be particularly helpful is to focus on the purpose of your speech, rather than on your own performance. Rather than worrying about how you will be perceived, shift your attention to the message you want to convey and the impact you hope to have on your listeners. This can help you to feel more grounded and centered, allowing you to deliver your speech with authenticity and conviction.Another important aspect of successful public speaking is the ability to engage the audience and create a sense of shared experience. This can be achieved through the use of eye contact, gestures, andvocal variety, as well as by incorporating interactive elements such as questions or opportunities for audience participation.Ultimately, the true power of public speaking lies in its ability to inspire, educate, and transform. When done with passion, authenticity, and a genuine desire to connect with the audience, a speech can have a lasting impact on the lives of those who hear it. Whether you are speaking to a small group or a large auditorium, the opportunity to share your voice and your message with others is a privilege that should be embraced with enthusiasm and commitment.。

It requires a certain level of confidence and skill to be able to stand in front of a crowd and deliver a speech. I had never been particularly keen on the idea of public speaking, but when I was asked to deliver a speech at a school event, I knew I couldn't say no. This was my first experience of public speaking.I remember the days leading up to the speech vividly. I was incredibly nervous and spent hours practicing in front of a mirror, trying to perfect my delivery and remember my lines. These questions plagued my mind constantly. Finally, the day of the event arrived. I could feel butterflies in my stomach as I made my way to the stage. The hall was packedwith students, teachers, and parents, all waiting to hear what I had to say. As I stepped up to the podium, I took a deep breath and began speaking. To my surprise, the words flowed easily and I found myself getting lost in the rhythm of my speech. I spoke passionately and confidently, and I could see the audience nodding along and listening intently. As I reached the end of my speech, I was met with a round of applause. The feeling of relief and accomplishment was overwhelming.I had conquered my fear of public speaking and delivered a speech that had resonated with the audience. Despite my efforts, I still felt unprepared as the day of the ceremony arrived. As I stood backstage waiting for my turn to speak, my heart was pounding in my chest. When my name was called, I took a deep breath and walked out onto the stage. The bright lights shining down on me only added to my nervousness, but I forced myself to focus on the words I had practiced so diligently. As I began to speak, I could feel my nerves gradually fading away. The words flowed more easily than I had expected, and I found myself becoming more comfortable with each passing moment. I spoke about the memories we had shared during our time in high school, the challenges we had overcome, and the dreams we all had for the future. To my surprise, the audience listened attentively, nodding and smiling at certain points in my speech. I even heard a few people laughing at a joke I had slipped in. The support from the crowd gave me a newfound confidence, and I finished my speech feeling proud of myself for overcoming my fears and delivering a message that resonated with my classmates. After the ceremony, many of my peers came up to me to express their appreciation for my words. The power of PS
• “One who forms a judgment on any point but cannot explain” it clearly “might as well never have thought at all on the subject.” • Greek leader: Pericles • Public speaking, as its name implies, is a way of making your ideas public--of sharing them with other people and of influencing other people.
• PS can—and often does make a difference in things people care about very much. Even if you spend the rest of your life primarily in a Chinese environment, you will have need for English public speaking.
• In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organized thinking—the ability to see clearly the relationships among ideas.
• The skills you use in PS can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of ways. • As you plan the structure of your speeches, you will learn how to organize your thoughts logically and cohesively. • As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will enhance your ability to think clearly and accurately.
PS and critical thinking
• To some extent, critical thinking is a matter of logic—of being able to spot weaknesses in other people’s arguments and to avoid them in your own. • It also involves related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion, judging the credibility of statements, and assessing the soundness of evidence.
• NERVOUSNESS IS NORMAL • It is perfectly normal—even desirable—to be nervous at the start of a speech. Your body is responding as it would to any stressful situation—by producing extra adrenaline. • This sudden shot of adrenaline is what makes your heart race, your hands shake, your knees knock, and your skin perspire.
• Think Positively
• Confidence is mostly the well-known power of positive thinking. If you think you can do it, you usually can. On the other hand, if you predict disaster and doom, which is almost always what you will get. Here are some ways you can transform negative thoughts into positive ones as you work on your speeches.
• To mention just a few situations, you might give a presentation at an international conference, a product demonstration to global buyers, a toast at a dinner in honor of foreign guests, or a tour of a Chinese historic site for overseas friends or associates. • The ability to speak effectively is so prized that college students in China are increasingly being asked to give a presentation as part of their job interview.

• Negative thought & Positive thought • I wish I didn’t have to give this speech • This speech is a chance for me to share my ideas and gain experience as a speaker. • I’m not a great public speaker. • No one’s perfect, but I’m getting better with each speech I give.
• In a different study, researchers concentrated on social situations and, again, asked their subjects to list their greatest fears. Here is how they answered:
PS and conversation
• Similarities • Organizing you thoughts logically./tailoring your message to the audience./ telling a story for maximum impact./ adapting to listener feedback. • Differences • PS is more highly structured./ PS requires more formal language./ PS requires a different method of delivery./
Becoming a confident speaker
• If you are worried about stage fright, you may feel better that you are not alone. • Even in the United States, where public speaking is highly popular, a 2005 national survey showed that 42%of respondents identified giving a speech as their top fear. In comparison, only 28% said they were afraid of dying.
• Every public speaker experiences all these reactions to some extent. • The question is: How can you control your nervousness and make it work for you rather than against you?
• I’m always nervous when I give a speech. • Everyone’s nervous. If other people can handle it, I can too.
• No one will be interested in what I have to say. • I have a good topic and I’m fully prepared. Of cause they’ll be interested.
• As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speechmaking, you will see how they can be used in other forms of communication as well. • If you take full advantage of your speech training, you will be able to enhance your skills as a critical thinker in many cihort, the need for Chinese students to have effective skills of English public speaking will only grow in future years. • Not only will these skills be crucial to your personal success as you work and live in a world shaped by globalization, they will be vital to China’s success as it competes with other nations of the world in the 21st century.
