Bill Cunningham (1929~2016) was an American fashion photographer famous for his candid photography, in particular that taken on the streets of New York. As a fashion journalist in his early career, his photography caught the attention of an American newspaper, for which he reported from 1978 until his death in 2016.
Paraphrase: It was not a wide range of contacts and connections that made him so great, either.
