Last Saturday, I started an adventure that I would never forget. It all started when I borrowed a book from the library titled“Mysteries o f the Ancient World.” The book was fascinating, filled with tales of lost cities and forgotten civilizations. However, in my excitement to dig into the mysteries, I made a terrible mistake——I lost the book. The librarian, Mrs. Thompson, was known for her strict rules. Losing a library book meant more than a fine; it meant a temporary ban(临时禁令) from the library. Panicked (惊慌失措),I decided to retrace my steps and find the book before the week ended.I began my search at the park where I last remembered reading. The sun
was setting, casting a golden glow on the grassy fields. I searched every bench, every corner, but the book was nowhere to be found. As the park emptied, I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach. Determined, I moved on to the next place I had visited —— a small café downtown. The smell of fresh coffee filled the air as I explained my trouble to the barista (咖啡师). She was kind and allowed me to look around, but the book was not among the cozy nooks and crannies.
Tired but not defeated,I returned home and thought about the last place I could have left the book: the bus. I remembered reading it on my way to school. With a glimmer of hope, I called the bus company and explained the situation. To my surprise, they checked their lost and found immediately.
The next day, I received a call that the book had been found. Excitement washed over me as I rushed to the bus station to recover it. The bus driver, Mr. Jenkins; handed me the book with a smile, saying, “It's always an adventure, isn't it ”
I returned the book to the library, and Mrs. Thompson, though strict, seemed pleased that I had found it. She warned me about being more careful but allowed me to continue borrowing books. The adventure taught me the importance of responsibility and the joy of solving a mysterv.
From that day on, I became more cautious with mv belongings, and my love for mysteries only grew. The lost library book adventure will forever be a story I share with pride.

Many of us start exercising in the hope of losing unwanted pounds. Unquestionably, aiming to be more active is a good thing. But if the main reason is to lose weight, your resolution could very well-come to nothing.
For starters, exercise is typically futile for weight loss. Take walking for example. A150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That's equal to one can of soda ——not exactly a great return on your investment of time and effort. It's much easier just to skip the soda.
When exercise is added to a diet, the results are equally unimpressive. Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising produced no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months. At 12 months, the diet-and-exercise combination showed an advanced, but it was slight ——about 4 pounds on average.
In studies where exercise has produced meaningful weight loss, participants burned at least400 to 500 calories per session on five or more days a week. To achieve that, a 150-pound person would need to walk a minimum of 90 minutes or run 30 minutes per day. In short, sessions need to go well beyond what most of us are
willing or able to do. And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate(弥补) by boosting desire for food and slowing down metabolism (新陈代谢), which over time limit how many pounds we lose.
When exercise fails to meet our weight-loss expectations, we often stop working out. Perhaps the biggest problem with exercising to drop pounds is that it turns physical activity into punishment ——a price we have to pay for a slimmer body. How many times have you heard someone say“T’ ll need to do extra exercise” af ter eating too much We treat exercise as a form of self-punishment for being“bad”. In this case, we' re unlikely to keep doing it for very long. The conclusion is that we' re more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight.
28. What does the underlined word“futile” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Necessary.
B. Fruitless.
C. Basic.
D. Painful.
29. What happens when you run 30 minutes on a daily basis
A. You might eat more than usual.
B. You will burn 500 calories a week.
C. You might have a higher metabolic rate.
D. You will lose about 4 pounds per month.
pared with dieting alone, what can we learn about the combination of dieting and exercising
A. It's less effective than dieting alone.
B. It's much more usofil within six months.
C. It shows little advantage after six months.
D. It displays an impressive advantage after a year.
31. How can we keep exercising
A. By lowering our expectations.
B. By focusing less on our weight.
C. By sticking to our exercise routine.
D. By paying more attention to our well-being.
Scientists from the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (HIPS) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences have designed a wristwatch that can measure essential chemicals in body sweat. Their findings were published in the journal ACS Nano.
. Sweat contains electrolytes(电解质), mainly potassium, sodium and calcium. The balance of these minerals is crucial for supporting muscle function, nerve health and regular heartbeat. The wristwatch collects sweat from the skin and analyzes it in real time using a sensor chip with sensitive membrane (膜). When sweat enters the device, it will come into contact with the membrane that contains three tubes capable of measuring sodium, potassium and
calcium levels.
Although they are not the first to invent sweat sensors, the Chinese researchers highlighted the wrist watch's solid interface for long-term reliability. “It surpasses the stability of many other sensors by continuously monitoring human sweat for over six months,” said the lead researcher Huang Xingjiu.
Since athletes use electrolyte drinks to counteract (抵制) the loss of energy and refill it, researchers in the study measured the sweat composition of these chemicals in athletes running long distances. The accuracy reached about 95 percent when compared to the standard detection method.
For ordinary people, the traditional electrolyte test requires samples of body fluids taken in hospitals. The new wristwatch has the potential to serve as a new option instead of going to hospitals. The next goal of the research team is to design various sensitive membrane materials for monitoring more information. The researchers noted that compared to popular fitness watches on the market, the device they designed is larger and heavier, making it less comfortable to wear. However, they expect to develop wearable sweat sensors suitable for market applications in the next five years. The team of researchers also aims to adapt the device for environmental monitoring.
32. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. What sweat contains.
B. How the wristwatch works.
C. What a sensor chip is.
D. Why minerals are important.
33. Which of the following is the advantage of the wristwatch
A. Accurate and large.
B. Popular and original.
C. Convenient and reliable.
D. Functional and comfortable.
3-. Nhat is implied in the last paragraph
A. The wristwatch hasn't come onto the market yet.
B. The wristwatch will replace other fitness watches.
C. The device has been used to monitor environment.
D. Its material makes the device uncomfortable to wear.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. An Innovative Device to Monitor Environment
B. New Ways to Measure Chemicals in Our Bodies
C. Electrolytes that Are Essential to Monitoring Health
D. A Wristwatch for Health Monitoring Through Sweat

The Internet offers us an opportunity to know more people ( without actually needing to“know them”), with very little effort. But are online friendships the same as in-real-life (IRL) friendships
36 -While digital immigrants(移民)( such as I, a 43-year-old man) support scientist John Suler's belief that people“separate their online lives from their offline lives”, the digital natives ( such as my son,a 18-year-old boy ) growing with Facebook and Instagram find differences between online and offline friendships more unclear. The Pew Research Center (PRC) finds that 57% of American teens make new friends online. But, it also finds that most“digital friendships” stay in the digital space with only 20% of teens having met an online friend in person. It seems that real-time friendships are considered more valuable than digital friendships even among the digital natives. 37 Online meetings come a close third. The reason why online friendships are placed below IRL friendships is the absence of physical intimacy(亲密).
So, is the Internet bad for relationships Obviously not. But for the net,I could have never kept in touch with or met my high school friend after a quarter of a century. 38 83% of teen social media users believe that social media makes them feel more connected to their friends’ lives. However, online interactions can sometimes have a negative effect on existing relationships. 68% of teen social media u ers report having experienced unpleasant feelings toward their friends on social media. 39
The Internet is undoubtedly an in valuable link petween people
separated by distance. 40 And a balance of online and offline interactions will pave the way for better relationships in the world.
A. Best friends meet most often at schools and homes.
B. People from different countries hold different opinions.
C But this link must be based on intimacy and familiarity.
D. How people see online friendships and IRL friendships depends on their age.
E. And the digital native seems to find online interactions with real-life friends beneficial.
F.26% of all teens have had an argument with a friend over something that happened online.
G.54% of online gaming teens feel more connected to existing friends with whom they play games.
