Family Fun
Not only is Buffalo family-friendly, we’re also family-fun! If you have yet to pack the car, here are four activities to plan for your next family adventure in Buffalo.
Animal House
Take a walk on the wild side and visit with our animal friends! You can have some facetime with river otters(水獭) at the Buffalo Zoo. Get up close and personal with animals on a tour at Hidden Valley Animal Adventure, and develop your child’s sense of wonder at Tifft Nature Preserve, a place that’s great for bird-watching. And don’t leave town without a visit to the Aquarium of Niagara to see the penguins (企鹅)!
Make a Splash
Buffalo is surrounded by water and plenty of chances to make a splash. Head to Canalside and ride on a water bike or take a sunset tour on the Miss Buffalo II. Have fun in the water park at Fantasy Island or jump on a Whirlpool Jet Boat or a Niagara Jet Adventure tour for a wild ride on the Niagara River. Welcome to our water world.
Hands-On Experiences
Throw the textbooks aside and introduce your little explorers to hands-on experiences. Raise a future paleontologist(古生物学者) with a visit to Penn Dixie where the kids can dig for fossils(化石). Head to East Aurora where learning feels like play at Explore & More Children’s Museum.
Make History
There’s plenty to inspire the imagination of the history lovers in your family on a trip to Buffalo. Appreciate art at the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum. One cold winter night in Shanghai, I was walking home at one in the morning after long tiring work. I was having trouble with my job in the bank. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up living there. City life had become too much for me. As I walked down empty streets, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away any possible danger. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets(毛毯).
Suddenly, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, all I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. When I reached home, I realized what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Now I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched carefully for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found. Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck(垃圾车) come to me. When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Chen?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man “Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape. It was nearly 3 a. m. by the time I got into bed. But I had got my wallet back.
I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help.

Family fights are never enjoyable. Whether you are dealing with a a loud sister
or a stubborn (固执的) mom or dad, the situation can be bad. At least that’s what
we have learned to expect.
What if it could be different? What if family fights and conflicts(冲突) could
be turned into chances to become closer? What if problems could be solved with
everyone walking away feeling more deeply cared for and loved?
Family fighting is, on one level, about power. Someone is telling someone else
what to do. In a short moment, emotions(情绪) can be brought out and the fight is
on. You can go down that old road or you can try something different.
In any fight, you have a need to be listened to and understood. People raise
their voices and shout at each other because they’re not being listened to. It’s
totally unconscious(无意识的). You want your mom or dad to listen and understand.
You want your brother or sister to listen and care. But you always seem to forget
that the person you’re fighting with has the same need to be listened to. So if
you can put aside your need for a few minutes, the situation will change quickly.
Give the other person some time to express his or her feelings, and you will earn
your turn to be listened to. And while you are listening, you have to listen for
the right information. The best way to do this in emotional situations is to ignore(忽
略) most of the words because many people can’t express what they are feeling with
words alone, especially when they are upset.
But if the situation starts to get out of control, it will be wise to just calm
down and leave the problem until later because many fights happen at the wrong time.
The situation will die down quickly, usually in less than 30 seconds. You can either
move on to problem solving or reach an agreement to work on it at a better time.
This way, everyone will feel respected and listened to, even when there is a
conflict. Emotions will be understood and respected, and it will bring your family
closer together.
8. The first three paragraphs mainly want to show that ____________.
A. people had better avoid family fights
B. family members fight to control each other
C. family fights are easy to happen
D. family fights can be turned into something positive
9. In the author’s opinion, the key to dealing with family fights is to ____________ .
A. meet the need to be listened to first
B. make sure that you’re the first to be listened to
C. ignore what others say in these emotional situations
D. stop saying anything when you feel you are giving orders
10. When the situation gets out of control, it’s best to __________.
A. wait for a better moment to speak
B. let the other person express his feelings
C. work on a written agreement first
D. move on to problem solving
11. What does “this” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Ignoring most of the words.
B. Listening for the right information.
C. Expressing what they are feeling with words.
D. Spending time listening to others.
D
Children who spend more time reading with their parents have a greater chance of becoming better readers than those who don’t. With help from their parents, children can learn to improve their reading skills.
“A lot of parents think after their child learns to read, they should stop reading to them,” Donna George said,“They are sadly mistaken.”
George offers her services to parents at the Title I Learning Centers. She said reading aloud to children may be the most valuable thing parents can do. “It is better for children to hear things at a higher level than where they are,” George said. “Parents are their child’s first teacher.” Parents help their children build listening, phonics, comprehension and vocabulary skills when they read aloud to them. Before parents can tell reading problems, they should escape the enemy—television and limit the time their children spend watching television. George suggested not allowing kids to have a TV in their bedrooms, setting a schedule of when kids can watch or keeping a list of how many programs children watch. Louise Joines said while her 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son enjoy reading, the television sometimes becomes a distraction. So she tries to build the situation by suggesting books the entire family will enjoy reading together, like the Harry Potter series.
Parents who do not read themselves should not depend on their children being enthusiastic about it. If parents would read to their children at least 15 minutes every day, children would not have so many problems in school. It is the parents’job to help build that desire(渴望) in their children, and of course to know what kind of books to read is also important.
12. According to George, reading aloud to children______________.
A.is parents’ first duty to their children.
B.helps them correct mistakes.
C.is helpful to their reading.
D.can get children out of television’s attraction.
13. The underlined word “distraction” (in Paragraph 4) means something that can ____________.
A.improve children’s reading skills.
B.help children form the right habit of reading.
C.make children interested in reading.
D.stop children concentrating on reading.
14. What is important according to the fourth paragraph?
A.Reading skills.
B.Reading speed.
C.Reading materials.
D.Reading environment.
15. The best title for the passage would be ___________.
A.How to Improve Children’s Reading Ability
B.How parents Make Their Child a Better Reader
C.Children Spend More Time Reading With Parents
D.Parents Are Their Child’s First Teacher

作文范文:
With the development of science and technology, communication has become increasingly convenient. People can communicate with their friends or relatives freely in different ways, among which chatting on the WeChat is the most popular. Almost every senior high student has their own WeChat number, with which they can chat with their friends, ask their teachers to help them solve their puzzles and exchange their thoughts.
However, some students have spent too much time chatting with their WeChat friends. What’s more, some students have hundreds of WeChat friends, using up almost all their spare time, even their study time.
I do think that WeChat can bring us much convenience and benefit, but what we should do is use it properly and reasonably. We should limit our time on it and devote ourselves to our study.。
