第三部分:阅读理解(共15 小题;每小题2分,满分30 分)
A
Two men, Alan and Henry, both seriously ill, shared a hospital room. Alan was allowed to sit up in his bed and his bed was next to the room’s only window. Henry had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours, of their wives, families, their homes and their jobs. And every afternoon when Alan, in the bed next to the window, could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm among flowers. Trees and skyline could be seen in the distance. As he described all these, Henry, on the other side of the room, would close his eyes and imagine the scene.
One warm afternoon Alan described a parade() passing by. Although Henry could not
hear the band, he could see it in his mind. Unexpectedly, an alien thought entered his head: Why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see anything? It doesn’t seem fair. Henry felt ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy grew and soon let him down. He began to find himself unable to sleep. He should be by that window— and that thought now control his life.
Late one night, as he lay staring at the ceiling, Alan began to cough. He was choking. Henry watched in the dim room as the struggling man tried hard to reach for the button to call for help. Listening from across the room, he never moved, never pushed his own button which would have called for a nurse. In less than five minutes, the coughing and choking stopped, along with the sound of breathing. Now, there was only silence— deathly silence.
As soon as it seemed appropriate, Henry asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.
Slowly, painfully, he struggled to take his first look. Finally, he would
have the joy of seeing it all himself. He would have the joy of seeing it all himself. He looked out, but faced a blank wall.

Have you dreamed of building your own machine? Do you wish you could invent something new? Here we look at a few British inventions of recent times.
Adaptive glasses
Do you wear glasses? If so, can you imagine life without them? In 1985, Joshua Silver, a professor at Oxford University, asked himself, “Can I invent a pair
of glasses that could be changed
by the weare r?” He designed two plastic lenses(透镜) that are filled with a special liquid. Using
syringes(注射器) you change the liquid between the lenses until you can see clearly. The glasses are
not beautiful but they are easy to use and
cheap to make.
The wind-up radio
When you switch your TV on tonight, think about all those people without electricity. Thinking about this, Trevor Baylis came up with the idea of designing a radio that could be powered by hand. In common with Joshua Silver he wanted his invention to be cheap and easy to use. He wanted even the poorest people in developing countries, who don’t have electricity and
cannot afford batteries, to use it. The radio has a generator(发电机)which is powered by turning a
handle. In 1996 it won the BBC Design Award for Best Product and
Best Design.
The Dyson vacuum(真空) cleaner
In many homes around the world you can see a cleaner that looks like a spaceship. This is the Dyson vacuum cleaner which uses something called “cyclonic separation” to separate the dirt. You do not need a bag for your cleaner and it does not get blocked so it is very practical. The idea came to Sir James Dyson after he kept having problems with his vacuum cleaner. He decided he could design a better one and in 1993 he opened his own factory. The Dyson is now one of the best-selling
cleaners in the UK and Dyson is believed to have earned over a billion pounds.
The Zapata flyboard
Have you ever dreamed of zooming through the water and leaping in the air like a dolphin? Now you can, thanks to a flyboard, built by water sports enthusiast Frank Zapata. With it you can dive back in the water and out again. It’s possible to jump to incredible heights out of the
water—over 30 feet. The basic flyboard model comes in at £4,200.
So keep dreaming and inventing. One day you might get it right.

Schools are still free to pass the potato. On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate voted to block a proposal(提议) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) would have
limited the amount of potatoes and other starchy(富含淀粉的) vegetables served in schools. And those vegetables high in carbohydrates(碳水化合物) would also have been banned from school breakfast. The USDA had
wanted to make the changes to the federal school
lunch program.
The Senate’s amendment(修正案) blocks the USDA from putting any limits on amount of
servings of potatoes or other vegetables in school lunches. Senator Susan Collins of Maine, a potato—gro wing state, supported amendment. “USD A’s proposed rule would have put significant and needless costs on our nation’s school districts at a time when they can least afford it,” Collins said.
Those in favor of potato limit say that children get enough potatoes already and should be encouraged to try other vegetables. The centre for science in the Public Interest pushed for the
restrictions. “USD A’s proposal was about helping kids to eat a very wide variety of vegetables, and I think that opinion has been lost in all this,” said the Center’s Margo Wootan, “Other v egetables have a hard time competing with potatoes.”
The proposed change upset potato growers, who believed potatoes were being unfairly targeted.
Some schools have criticized the USDA’s attempt to tell them exactly what foods they can or ca n’t serve. Critics say the USDA should focus on advising schools on how to prepare the potato instead. Potatoes can be a good source of fiber. Many schools already prepare French fries with less
grease(油脂) and serve potatoes in
healthier ways.
The USDA is expected to release a final list of guidelines for the federal school lunch program next year. Senator Mark Udall of Colorado, another potato—growing state, also supported the amendment that blocked the potato limit. “This amendment seeks to ensure flexibility for schools to provide nutritious and affordable school meals.” he said.
64. What is the content of the proposal put forward
by the USDA?
A. Reducing the amount of starch vegetables
served in schools. B. Reducing the amount of
vegetables served in schools.
C. Supporting serving potatoes in school.
D. Stopping serving starchy vegetables in schools.
65. One reason for blocking the proposal is
that_ .

B. children who get enough other vegetables for children
C. there aren’t enough other vegetables for children
D. other vegetables will have a hard time competing with potatoes.
66. Who supports a potato limit according to
the passage?

B. Critics
C. Margo Wootan

The theme of the London Olympics opening ceremony will be “I sles of wonder”, organi zers revealed on Friday. The title came from an amazing speech about the beauty of the island in Shakespeare’s play.
Oscar-wining filmmaker Danny Boyle, the ceremony’s artistic director, said the theme was inspired by a passage from William Shakespeare’s comedy The tempest.
Boyle, whose Slumdog Millionaire won eight Oscars, said he was trying to keep the details of the July 27 ceremony under wraps, but he gave away the first details of the event, set to be watched by one billion TV viewers.
Boyle said that he had had the biggest ringing bell made in Europe, which will hang at one end of the Olympic Stadium and be rung to start the opening ceremony. Boyle told BBC that he wanted people to hear it for hundreds of years.
Fellow film director Stephen Daldry, the creative director for the London Olympics opening
ceremony, told reporters the opening show would project a journey which will
celebrate who we are , who we were and who we wish to be.
However, Boyle admitted that London would not rival(与……匹敌) the
breathtaking opening
ceremony staged at the Beijing Olympics four years ago, due to the tougher economic times.
It was announced the ceremony in December that the budget for the opening and closing ceremonies had been doubled to 81 million pounds.
Boyle also promised that the ceremony would be more intimate(个人的) than the splendid
performance of drummers and dancers in Beijing’s Bird’s Nest stadium.
Boyle also promised that the show would be armed with a British sense of humor.

People have been growing chrysanthemums(菊花) for more than 2,000 years.
Chrysanthemums
make bright and colorful gardens. People in China and other countries make tea with the flowers.
One basic kind of chrysanthemums is the garden chrysanthemum. The other basic kind is the florist chrysanthemum. The garden chrysanthemum is better able to handle different growing conditions.
There are many varieties of chrysanthemums. The decorative chrysanthemum is often seen in gardens. Another popular type, the quill chrysanthemum, has long, straight petals(花瓣) like a tube
or needle.
Chrysanthemum blooms(花) can be white, yellow, gold, red, or other colors.
The plants often
grow one meter high.
The soil for chrysanthemums should be kept moist(潮湿) but well drained so
it does not get too
wet.
Newly-planted chrysanthemums should be watered two or three times a week, depending on conditions. Plants established in the ground may do well just with normal rainfall.
Chrysanthemums grow best in full sunshine. They produce colorful blooms when days get shorter and nights get longer. The life cycle of the plant depends on the amount of daylight. This is why experts advise against placing chrysanthemums near nightlights or streetlights. The night may
interfere(干扰) with their normal growth cycle. The plants may develop buds(花苞)too soon.
In climates where temperatures fall below freezing, plant chrysanthemums at least six weeks before the first frost. That way, the plants will be well established for cold weather.
Some gardeners say the most beautiful presentation comes from planting chrysanthemums close together. But be sure to leave enough space to let air flow between the plants. If not, there may be a greater chance of disease.
To get more blooms, gardeners pinch out(掐掉) the branches when new growth has reached
fifteen centimeters. Squeeze(压缩) about five to seven centimeters off each branch. Pinch it again when a branch grows another twelve to fifteen centimeters. Stop the pinching about one hundred
days before you want the plants to bloom.
72. What has a great effect on the life cycle of the chrysanthemums?
A. The conditions of the soil.
B. The amount of
daylight. C. The amount of rainfall. D. Cold
weather.
73. Why do gardeners pinch out the branches when new growth reaches certain length?
A. To make chrysanthemums
grow thick. B. To get more
blooms.
C. To prevent chrysanthemums from
falling ill. D. To let air flow
between the plants.
74. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Growing chrysanthemums has a very long history and all the people in
the world like making tea with chrysanthemums.
B. chrysanthemums can grow one meter high and the closer they are planted,
the higher they grow.
C. Though planting chrysanthemums close together can make them look more
beautiful, enough space should be left.
D. The petals of chrysanthemums are long and straight and the more water
chrysanthemums get, the more quickly they grow.
75. From the text we can know .
A. Florist chrysanthemums are more difficult in handling different
growing conditions. B. China has the longest history of growing
chrysanthemums.
C. In case the plants develop buds t oo soon we’d better not
put them near lights. D. There are five colors of chrysanthemums
in total.
第四部分写作(共两节,满分35 分)
第一节任务型读写(共10 小题;每小题1分,满分10 分)
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入适当单词. 注意:每个空格只填一
个单词.
Nowadays more and more people are concerned about their health, but how to keep healthy? Different people may give different answers to this question. In my opinion, it is essential to do the following.
First, it is absolutely necessary to take some exercise at regular time every day. Research shows that getting plenty of exercise can make the heart beat faster and the lungs work harder. This strengthens the heart, reduces the chance of heart attack, and helps lower blood pressure. That’s why more and more people are becoming active in various kinds of sports and exercise. Every morning many people get up early and take much exercise. Some play ball games while others run, jog, walk or dance to music. In the afternoon, there are also many people keen on sports. Through sports and exercise, people become healthier and stronger.
Medical researchers have proved that what people eat affects their health. They advise people to
eat more fruit and vegetables and less meat such as beef and pork because meat contains more fat than poultry(家禽) and fish. Fat can build up in the arteries(动脉), block the flow of blood, and cause a heart attack or stroke(中风).
Getting rid of bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol is also an important way to keep healthy. Smoking and drinking alcohol injure one’s health a great deal, and therefore should be
given up. Unfortunately few people
follow this advice.

Our school has a history of more than one hundred years and consists of 54 classes. Over 200 teachers are working here. It is located at the centre of the

However, you’ll face some difficulties if you study in our school. Firstly, you may have difficulty in your study because we speak Chinese all day long. Secondly, you’ll suffer from homesickness because of living far away from your country.
I think you’d better read some books in Chinese to overcome the trouble in understanding the language before you come here.。
