Great, I thought, imagining hours spent pawing through dusty, rotting boxes and listening to boring stories about people I didn't know. "You'll be surprised," my mom promised, "Family histories can be very interesting."In truth, Grandpa didn't want to limit my work to just research, hoping to also preserve our family memories. He'd discovered a computer program that helps digitally scan old pictures and letters to preserve their contents before they crumble from old age. Grandpa wanted me to help him connect the scanner and set up the computer program. Ile could type documents and send emails, but had neverused a scanner.Soon after, I became fascinated with my relatives' lives. I asked Grandpa to tell the story behind every picture and letter we scanned. The stories, which turned out not to be boring at all, helped me not only understand but also relate to my relatives. I became so hungry for more information that Grandpa needed additional props to keep me satisfied. He showed me a chest filled with random stuff, all covered in dust.Perusing through their belongings, I felt I was opening a window into the world of my relatives, a world long since gone. Grandpa showed me a bundle of letters he had sent to Grandma from the front lines of World War II and I could almost smell the gunpowder. I turned the pages of mygreat-grandmother's recipe book and could picture her cooking in her kitchen. All of the people who had been merely names to me now had faces to match.Later, Grandpa admitted, "I probably could have done this project myself. I just wanted someone to share it with." I can't thank him enough for sharing the experience and making me appreciate the family members who have made me the person I am. I will cherish family memories and hope that someday will be able to pass them down to my own grandchildren.4. Which of the following can best describe the author's first impression of research?A. Call boxes would be changed intomini-offices for workers on-the-go and will offer free coffee to subscribers.Bar Works Inc's chief executive Jonathan Black, a Briton living in New York, said that his company will renew telephone boxes with fully functional printers, scanners, 25-inch screens andWi-Fi. Bar Works specializes in offering bar-themed work stations in prime locations, charging customers with a monthly subscription in return for free access to the business and office supplies. The company plans to operate in a similar manner, offering British customers with monthly memberships to "Pod Works" for £19.99($29).The company will refit telephone boxes in five major British cities and has already rented and changed 15 old call boxes in London and Edinburgh. As expected, they are coming into use by the public in the coming months. "Given the prime location, above all else, of the telephone boxes, the launch is expected to gain at least 10, 000 members by the end of 2021. It's an alternative to, say, Starbucks but obviously it provides you with total privacy. " said Black. Thanks to mobile phones, the red telephone boxes have been effectively made expendable. According to a report by the Daily Mail, retired telephone boxes, especially those damaged deliberately, are sent to a "telephone box graveyard" of sorts, where they take great pains to restore to their former glory before being sold to collectors across the globe. Such is the demand for properly restored telephone boxes, that it is not uncommon for them to be sold for amounts as high as £10, 000.Despite its setback, in a recent survey, the British red telephone box, which was originally designed in 1920, was voted the greatest British design of all time.8. What will the red telephone boxes be used for?A. Mini-offices.B. Mini coffee boxes.C. Bar-themed call boxes.D. Leisure rooms for workers.9. What do you know about the renewed telephone boxes?.A. They will be put into use next year.B. They offer as much privacy as Starbucks.C. They will be equipped with office supplies.D. They have been rented in five major British cities.10. To arouse concern for them.B. To introduce their new role.C. To expand a larger marketD. To advertise their launch.DFrom 1990 to 2000, fishermen seeking swordfish off the coast of California accidentally caught and killed over 100 sea turtles, and injured many more. In 2001, the federal government established the Pacific Leatherback Conservation Area (PLCA), a region off the coast of California where fishing boats aren’t allowed to enter from August through November. Since then, the number of turtles killed by mistake has fallen rapidly, but a handful of animals still die from being caught in fishing nets each year. And meanwhile, the once $15 million swordfish industry has become a $2 million industry.Scientists are hoping to find a way to both protect sea turtles and other endangered creatures and help fishermen make a living. For this, many are looking at dynamic ocean management to help fishing boats meet fish where they are and avoid catching other fish by mistake. The first paper to suggest that the fish that live in the open ocean should be guarded with fluid, ever-changing zones of protection, came out in 2000. Larry Crowder, a professor at Hopkins Marine Station, remembers reading it and thinking,“ Cool idea, but it will never work.” In 2000, scientists didn’t have the computer power to cheaply test statistical models or deal with satellite data quickly. They didn’t have enough data dealing with fish or satellite data on ocean conditions, either. Now scientists can download oceans of satellite data in minutes, and attach satellite archival tags to marine animals to track their movements. They first collect data by marking the creatures, collecting reports from fishing boats, or other tracking methods. Then they compare that data with weather conditions, the time of year, and any other data that can be sensed. Finally, they canforecast where fish are likely to be.Crowder and his colleagues used the data to develop a tool called EcoCast, which shows fishermen a daily map where there are more fish they desire. According to statistical modeling, if fishers had used EcoCast during the 2012 and 2015 fishing seasons, they could have fished in at least 125,000 more square miles than were open to them, without significant risk of hurting turtles.12. The federal government hopes the PLCA and its rules can_________.A. prevent fishing in the PLCAB. help collect data for future researchesC. protect the creatures in the area to some degreeD. make the public realize the importance of our environment13. What did Larry Crowder think of dynamic ocean management at first?A. It was unrealistic.B. It was stupid.C. It was possible.D. It was interesting.14. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?A. An effective way to collect data.B. Some fruits in the related technology.C. A scientific method to find specific species.D. The way dynamic ocean management works.15 .What should be the advantage of using EcoCast?A. It protects the marine environment from pollution.B. It reduces the risk of national economical loss.C. It prevents fishermen from getting lost while fishing.D. It both protects ocean animals and supports fishery.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

People today experience more depressio n than previous generations, despite the technological wonder s that help us every day. It might be because of them. Our lifestyles are increasingly driven by technology. Phon es, computers and the Internet pervade our days. There is a constant, nagging need to check for texts and emails, to update Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn profiles, to acq uire the latest notebook or cellphone. Are we being served by these technological wonders or ha ve we become enslaved by them? I study the psychology of t echnology, and it seems to me that we are sleepwalking int o a world where technology is severely affecting our well-be ing. Technology can be hugely useful in the fast lane of m odern living, but we need to stop it from taking over. For many of us, it is becoming increasingly difficult t o control the impulse to check our inbox yet again or se e whether the headlines have changed since we last looked. Our children are in a similar position, scared to miss a vital Tweet or status update on Facebook. In many home s, the computer has become the centre of attention; it is the medium through which we work and play. How did this arise, and what is it doing to us? In th is era of mass consumption, we are surrounded by advertisin g that urges us to find a fulfillment through the acquisiti on of material goods. As a result, adults and children incr easingly believe that in order to belong and feel good abou t themselves, they must own the lasted model or gadget.Yet research by psychologist Tim Kasser of Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, has shown that people who place a high value on material goals are unhappier than those who are less materialistic. Materialism is also associate d with lower self-esteem, greater narcissism, greater tendenc y to compare oneself unfavorably with other people, less emp athy and more conflict in relationships. Our culture also constantly reminds us that time is mone y. This implies a need for total efficiency, which is why we are allowing laptop computers and mobile phones to blur the separation between work and home. As one unhappy huma n-resource manager in a high-tech company put it: “They gav e me a mobile phone so they can own me 24 hours a day, and a portable computer, so my office is now with me a ll the time—I cannot break out of this pressure. Sound fami liar?Psychologists generally believe that the lack of a clear separation between work and home significantly damages our relationships with loved ones. It also predispose us to f ocus on the here and now at the expense of long-term goal s.By imposing these twin pressures, modern society is in d anger of swapping standard of living for quality of life. W e need ways to help recover those increasingly large parts of our lives that we have ceded to technology, to regai n mastery over technology and learn to use it in a health y and positive way.21、What does Daniel Goleman attempt to illustrate by calling the era “the age of melancholy” in Paragraph 1?()A、Technology has increased people’s feelings of happiness.B、People become frustrated for lack of on-line experience.C、People are getting stressed out because of technology.D、Technology can work wonders in modern society.22、What impact has been produced by technology on people accordi ng to Paragraph 2?()A、People cannot afford the latest laptops.B、People have to adopt a different lifestyle.C、People constantly write messages and emails.D、People cannot live without computers or telephones.23、What is the author most worried about concerning the change i nduced by technology?()A、Technology will take away peoples’ jobsB、People’s happiness will be greatly jeopardized.C、Technology is developing at a breath-taking speed.D、People will be indifferent to technological wonders.24、According to Tim Kasser, why are people obsessed with materia l pursuit?()A、The pressure from peers and relatives.B、The temptation to own the latest model.C、The divergence of life values and standards.D、The convenience of accessing digital devices.25、Which of the following would be the best title for the passag e?()A、Technology Wonders Bring New LifestylesB、Technology Today: Empowers or EnslavesC、Standard of Living or Quality of LifeD、Sad Feelings in Advanced Society(二)Passage 2Speaking two languages rather than just one has obvious practical benefits in an increasingly globalized world. But in recent years, s cientists have begun to show that the advantages of bilingualism are even more fundamental than being able to converse with a wider range of people. Being bilingual, it turns out, makes you smarter. It can h ave a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not r elated to language and even shielding against dementia in old age. This view of bilingualism is remarkably different from the unders tanding of bilingualism through much of the 20th century. Researchers, educators and policy makers long considered a second language to be an interference, cognitively speaking, that hindered a child’s acade mic and intellectual development. They were not wrong about the interference: there is ample eviden ce that in a bilingual’s brain both language systems are active even when he is using only one language, thus creating situations in which one system obstructs the other. But this interference, researchers a re finding out, isn’t so much a handicap as a blessing in disguise. It forces the brain to resolve internal conflict, giving the mind a w orkout that strengthens its cognitive muscles.Bilinguals, for instance, seem to be more adept than monolinguals at solving certain kinds of mental puzzles. In a 2004 study by the p sychologists Ellen Bialystok and Michelle Martin-Rhee, bilingual and monolingual preschoolers were asked to sort blue circles and red squa res presented on a computer screen into two digital bins—one marked with a blue square and the other marked with a red circle. In the first task, the children had to sort the shapes by color, placing blue circles in the in marked with the blue square and red sq uares in the bin marked with the red circle. Both groups did this wit h comparable ease. Next, the children were asked to sort by shape, wh ich was more challenging because it required placing the images in a bin marked with a conflicting color. The bilinguals were quicker at p erforming this task. The collective evidence from a number of such studies suggests th at the bilingual experience improves the brain’s so-called executive function—a command system that directs the attention processes that we use for planning, solving problems and performing various other me ntally demanding tasks. These processes include ignoring distractions to stay focused, switching attention willfully from one thing to another and holding information in mind —like remembering a sequence of directions while driving.systems improve these aspects of cognition? Until recently, researche rs thought the bilingual advantage stemmed primarily from an ability for inhibition that was honed by the exercise of suppressing one lang uage system: this suppression, it was thought, would help train the b ilingual mind to ignore distractions in other contexts. But that expl anation increasingly appears to be inadequate, since studies have sho wn that bilinguals perform better than monolinguals even at tasks tha t do not require inhibition, like threading a line through an ascendi ng series of numbers scattered randomly on a page. The key difference between bilinguals and monolinguals may be mor e basic: a heightened ability to monitor the environment. “Bilingual s have to switch languages quite often —you may talk to your father in one language and to your mother in another language,” says Albert Costa, a researcher at the University of Pompeu Fabra in Spain. “It requires keeping track of changes around you in the same way that we monitor our surroundings when driving.” In a study comparing German-Italian bilinguals with Italian monolinguals on monitoring tasks, Mr. Costa and his colleagues found that the bilingual subjects not only performed better, but they also did so with less activity in parts of the brain involved in monitoring, indicating that they were more eff icient at it.26、What can be inferred from the passage about the traditional v iew of bilingualism?()A、Bilinguals are cognitively disadvantagedB、The pros of bilingualism outweigh the con.C、Bilinguals have advantages over monolinguals.D、Bilinguals and monolinguals are intellectually similar.27、According to Bialystok and Martin-Rhee, why is the second tas k more challenging than the first one?()A、It demands the subjects to solve a variety of tough problems.B、It involves a more complicated cognitive process in the brain.C、It requires more time and experience to complete the second ta sk.D、It forces the subjects to focus all their attention on the exp eriment.28、How is language interference perceived by modern researchers according to the passage?()A、It impedes a child’s academic growth.B、It improves a child’s cognitive flexibility.C、It diverts a child’s attention from one thing to another.D、It enables a child to use two languages interchangeable.29、Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “tussle” in Paragrah7?()A、Tunnel.B、Quarrel.C、Struggle.D、Argument.30、Which of the following would be the best title for the passag e?()A、Fallacies about BilingualsB、Why Bilinguals Are SmarterC、Odds and Ends of BilingualsD、Bilinguals: Advantages or Disadvantages二、简答题。

Passage1The first time I questioned the conventional wisdom on the nature of a healthy diet,I was in my salad days,almost40years ago,and the subject was salt.Researchers were claiming that salt supplementation was unnecessary after strenuous exercise, and this advice was being passed on by health reporters. All I knew was that I had played high school football in suburban Maryland, sweating profusely through double sessions in the swamp-like90-degree days of August.Without salt pills,I couldn't make it through a two-hour practice;I couldn't walk across the parking lot afterward without cramping. While sports nutritionists have since come around to recommend that we should indeed replenish salt when we sweat it out in physical activity, the message that we should avoid salt at all other times remainsstrong.Salt consumption is said to raise blood pressure, cause hypertension and increase the risk of premature death. This is why the Department of Agriculture's dietary guidelines still consider salt Public Enemy No.1,coming before fats, sugars and alcohol. It's why the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has suggested that reducing salt consumption is as critical to long-term health as quitting cigarettes. And yet, this eat-less-salt argument has been surprisingly controversial--and difficult to defend. Not be-cause the food industry opposes it,but because the actual evidence to support it has always been so weak. When I spent the better part of a year researching the state of the salt science back in1998--already a quarter century into the eat-less-salt recommendations--journal editors and public health administrators were still remarkably candid in their assessment of how flimsy the evidence was implicating salt as the cause of hypertension. While, back then, the evidence merely failed to demonstrate that salt was harmful, the evidence from studies publishes over the past two years actually suggests that restricting how much salt we eat can increase our likelihood of dying prematurely.Put simply, the possibility has been raised that if we were to eat as little salt as the U.S.D.A.and the C.D.C.recommend,we'd be harming rather than helping ourselves. Why have we been told that salt is so deadly?Well, the advice has always sounded reasonable. It has what nutritionists like to call"biological plausibility."Eat more salt and your body retains water to maintain a stable concentration of sodium in your blood. This is why eating salty food tends to make us thirsty:we drink more;we retain water. The result can be a temporary increase in blood pressure, which will persist until our kidneys eliminate both salt and water. The scientific question is whether this temporary phenomenon translates to chronic problems:if we eat too much salt for years, does it raise our blood pressure, cause hypertension, then strokes, and then kill us prematurely? It makes sense, but it's only a hypothesis. The reason scientists do experiments is to find out if hypotheses are true. The N.I.H.has spent enormous sums of money on studies to test the hypothesis, and those studies have singularly failed to make the evidence any more conclusive. With nearly everyone focused on the supposed benefits of salt restriction, little research was done to look at the potential dangers. But four years ago,Italian researchers began publishing the results from a series of clinical trials, all of which reported that, among patients with heart failure, reducing salt consumption in-creased the risk of death.21.Salt pills seem to be a kind of substance which__________.A.improves one's performance in sports competitionB.provides one with necessary salt supplementationC.prevents one from being addicted to saltD.provides one with extra energy22.According to the passage, when were people recommended to eat less salt?A.Around the early1990s.B.Around the early1980s.C.Around the early1970s.D.Around the early1960s.23.According to the author, eating more salt__________.A.has short term effect upon people's blood pressureB.has long term effect upon people's blood pressureC.has negative effect upon people's healthD.has no effect upon people's health24.What the passage tries to tell the reader is that__________.A.food industry misled people about salt consumptionB.strict salt consumption is necessary for people's healthC.salt consumption has no direct impact upon people's healthD.the suggestion of strict salt consumption might be misleading25.It can be inferred that the author is__________.A.supportive of the eat-less-salt campaignB.suspicious of the eat-less-salt argumentC.sarcastic of the eat-less-salt argumentD.neutral of the eat-less-salt argument请阅读Passage2,完成第26~30小题。
