They settled in at a comfortable East Slide caféand within minutes, another customer was approaching their table.“Hey, aren’t you from Mississippi?” the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. “I’m from Mississippi too.”Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.“They began telling me all the news ofMississippi,” Welty said. “I didn’t know what my New York friends were thinking.”Taxis on a rainy New York night are rarer than sunshine. By the time the group got up to leave, it was pouring outside. Welty’s new friends immediately sent a waiter to find a cab. Heading back downtown toward her hotel, her big-city friends were amazed at the turn of events that had changed their Big Apple dinner into a Mississippi“My friends said: ‘Now we believe your stories,’” Welty added. And I said: ‘Now you know. These are the people that make me write them.’”Sitting on a soda in her room, Welty, a slim figure in a simple gray dress, looked pleased with this explanation.“I don’t make them up,” she said of the characters in her fiction these last 50 or so years. “I don’t have to.”Beauticians, bartenders, piano players and people with purple hats, Welty’s people come from afternoons spent visiting with old friends, from walks through the streets of her native Jackson, Miss., from conversations overheard on a bus. It annoys Welty that, at 78, her left ear has now given out. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story.5.What happened when Welty was with her friends at the cafe?A. Two strangersjoined her.B. It’s called Apple Day but in practice it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste, a wide variety of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see the range of classical apples still in existence, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try, as is the knobbly(多疙瘩的) Cat’s Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else. There are also varieties developed to suit specific local conditions. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and becausethese are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园).If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.8.What can people do attheapple events?A .Attend experts’lectures.B .Visit fruit-loving families.C .Plantfruit trees inan orchard.D. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discov ering new rules. By tracking people’s e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.“The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the Univer sity of Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.”Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails,Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set ofnews stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the “most e-mai led” list for six months. One of his first finds was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On.”12 .Whatdothe classic rulesmentionedinthetext apply to?A.News reports.B. They settled in at a comfortable East Slide café and within minutes, another customer was approaching their table. “Hey, aren’t you from Mississippi?”the elegant, white-haired writer remembered being asked by the stranger. “I’m from Mississippi too.”Without a second thought, the woman joined the Welty party. When her dinner partner showed up, she also pulled up a chair.“They began telling me all the news ofMississippi,”Welty said. Sometimes, sitting on a bus or a train, she hears only a fragment(片段) of a particularly interesting story. 5.What happened when Welty was with her friends at the cafe?A. One of the very best varieties for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall for it.At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family affairs, children are well catered for with apple-themed fun and games.Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including stately gardens and commercial orchards(果园).If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.8.What can people do attheapple events?A .Attend experts’lectures.B .Visit fruit-loving families.C .Plantfruit trees inan orchard.D. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morningpapers. You don’t want them to think o f you as a Debbie Downer.”Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication—e-mails,Web posts and reviews, face-to-face conversations—found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的), but that didn’t necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague analyzed the “most e-mai led” list for six months. One of his first finds was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or thatinspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. AI paid a visit to Cambridge last January. Though the trip took me 5 hours and it rained the whole day with strong winds there, the town deserved a visit. The bus started at 6:10 a. m. It stopped at 4 airports before we finally arrived, which wasted more time than we expected. Tired with long sitting, one passenger stood up to relax his numbed legs. The driver asked him to sit down but in vain. So he pulled up and said seriously, "Either you get off or sit down. "To him, safety is the first policy.Cambridge consists of nearly thirty colleges. The oldest part of the university was built in the 13th century while the newest was founded in the mid 1960s. The number of the students is so great that many students live in lodgings(出租房)and move into college for their final year.Cambridge is called a university town because there is no clear separation between the university buildings and the rest of the city. The university is not just one part of the town; it is all over the town. The heart of Cambridge has shops, pubs, and supermarkets, but most of it is university-colleges, departments, libraries, clubs and other places for university staff and students. Students fill the shops, cafes, banks and churches, making these as well part of the university. With over 10, 000 undergraduates and postgraduates, the town is a busy place indeed. Students here are not allowed to keep cars. If you happen to be walking in the street during a break, better stop a moment to avoid the boiling sea of bicycles hurrying in all directions, carrying students from one college or lecture room to another.1. The writer believed that the trip took more time because of________A. bad weatherB. unexpected stops of the busC. one passengerD. an accident on the way2. Why is Cambridge called a university town?A. It has 10, 000 undergraduates and postgraduates.B. There are nearly thirty colleges in the town.C. All the students and staff live in the town.D. The university and town are fully combined.3. It can be inferred that most Cambridge students take________ as their first means of transport.A. boatsB. carsC. bicyclesD. busesBWhen I was a b aby, I entertained you and made you laugh. Whenever I was “bad”, you'd shake your finger at me and ask, “How could you?”--but then you'd give up, and roll me over for a belly scratch and I believed that life could not be any more perfect. My housetraining was a long process, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. We went for long walks, runs in the park and car rides. We stopped for ice cream. I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. Eventually, you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a dog person, but I still welcomed her into our home. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement, I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them too. Your wife was afraid I would bite them. But nevertheless, as they began to grow, I became their friend. Now, you have a new job in another city and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your “family”, but there was a time when I was your only family.I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the dog pound. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said, “I know you will find a good home for her.” They shrugged and gave you a pained look. The children were in tears as they waved me goodbye. And “How could you?” were the only three words that swept over my mind.Is it better to live with hope or without hope? At first, whenever anyone passed my pen (围栏), I rushed to the front, hoping it was you, that you had changed your mind and that this was all a bad dream. My beloved master, I will think of you and wait for you forever. I hope you receive more faithfulness from your family than you showed to me.4. Who tells this story?A. A dog.B. Achild. C. A dog's owner. D.A dog trainer5. I was selected and told I had potential. They said that for only $900 I could attend a weekend event which dozens of the most prestigious(有声望的)modeling agencies from around the world would attend. At l 3,my hopes of fame and fortune clouded all judgment and I begged my parents to let me go.We have never been rich, but they saw my enthusiasm and agreed.I imagined being signed by some famous model companies. For months, any boredom or disappointment I faced was pushed aside because I knew I would soon have the chance to be a real model.I thought I would grace the covers of famous magazines!Of course,I wasn’t signed, but what hurt the most was being told that if I grew to 5'9”(about 1.75metres)I could be a success.I prayed for a growth spurt(冲刺)because I could not imagine giving up my dream.I made an appointment with a local modeling agency and the agent demanded $500 for classes.$500 for a photo shoot and $300 for other expenses. My parents only agreed after hours and hours of me begging. The agency sent me out on a few auditions, but with every day I didn’t receive a call,I grew more depressed. The final straw came in July after I had decided to focus on commercial modeling. There was an open call in New York City.We spent hours driving and another few hours waiting, only to be told that I was too short.I was devastated(感到难以承受的).Years later,I realized that the trip to New York was good as it made me notice I d idn’t actually love modeling, just the idea of it.I wanted to be special and I was innocently determined to reach an impossible goal. The experience has made me stronger and that will help me in the future.8.What’s the main reason why the author wanted to b e a model?A.She won a national contest. Only Native Americans, cowboys, and explorers entered this area before the park was set up in 1964. Even today, it is difficult to walk or ride through the park. The roads are still made of dirt. Driving requires a special vehicle. The National Park Service says Canyon-lands National Park is wild America.Rivers created the area as they cut rocks into many different formations. At the center of the park are two deep canyons carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers. Three areas that surround these rivers are included in the park. One of these areas is called the Maze District. This area includes rock art made by people who lived there more than 2,000 years ago. Yet many people today cannot see the Maze District because it is so difficult to reach. The area is one of the loneliest and wildest areas in the United States.Another area of the park is called the Needles. It includes long, thin, red and white rocks that reach high into the air like fingers on a hand.A good way to see all the areas of Canyonlands National Park is to fly over it.A one hour trip in a small airplane makes it possible to see the park's red rocks, arches and flat areas where ancient Indian people once lived. From high in the air, visitors can clearly see the third area of the park--a high broad flat rock known as the Island in the Sky. The island was formed between the two rivers.Another interesting formation is called the Upheaval Dome. This is a huge hole about four hundred and fifty meters deep and one point five kilometers wide. AGive it five minutesI used to be a hothead. Whenever anyone said anything, I’d t hink of a way to disagree. I’d push back hard if something did n’t fit my world-view.It’s like I had to be first with an opinion — a s if being first meant something. But what it really meant was that I wasn’t thinking hard enough about the problem. The fas ter you react, the less you think. Not always, but often. This came to a head back in 2007. I was speaking at the Busi ness Innovation Factory conference in , . So was Richard Sau l Wurman. After my talk Richard came up to introduce himself and compliment my talk. That was very generous of him. He c ertainly didn’t have to do that. And what did I do? I pushed back at him about the talk he gav e. While he was making his points on stage, I was taking an in ventory of the things I didn’t agree with. And when presented with an opportunity to speak with him, I quickly pushed back a t some of his ideas. I must have seemed like such an asshole. His response changed my life. It was a simple thing. He said “Man, give it five minutes.” I asked him what he meant by that? He said, it’s fine to disagree, it’s fine to push back, it’s great t o have strong opinions and beliefs, but give my ideas some time to set in before you’re sure you want to argue against the m. “Five minu tes” represented “think”, not react. He was totall y right. I came into the discussion looking to prove something, not learn something. This was a big moment for me.Richard has spent his career thinking about these problems. He’s given it 30 years. And I gave it just a few minutes. Now, certainly he can be wrong and I could be right, but it’s better t o think deeply about something first before being so certain y ou’re right. There’s also a difference between asking questions and pushi ng back. Pushing back means you already think you know. As king questions means you want to know. Ask more questions. Learning to think first rather than react quick is a life-long pursuit. It’s tough. I still get hot sometimes when I should n’t. But I’m really enjoying all the benefits of getting better. If you aren’t sure why this is important, think about this quote f rom Jonathan Ive regarding Steve Jobs’ reverence(respect) fo r ideas:And just as Steve loved ideas, and loved making stuff, he trea ted the process of creativity with a rare and a wonderful rever ence. You see, I think he better than anyone understood that while ideas ultimately can be so powerful, they begin as fragile, barely formed thoughts, so easily missed, so easily compro mised, so easily just squished. That’s deep. Ideas are fragile. They often start powerless. Th ey’re barely there, so easy to ignore or skip or miss. There are two things in this world that take no skill: 1. Spendin g other people’s money and 2. Dismissing an idea. Dismissing an idea is so easy because it doesn’t involve any work. You can scoff at it. You can ignore it. You can puff som e smoke at it. That’s easy. The hard thing to do is protect it, th ink about it, let it marinate, explore it, riff on it, and try it. The ri ght idea could start out life as the wrong idea.So next time you hear something, or someone, talk about an i dea, pitch an idea, or suggest an idea, give it five minutes. Thi nk about it a little bit before pushing back, before saying it’s to o hard or it’s too much work. Those things may be true, but there may be another truth in th ere too: It may be worth it.1. Which of the following best describes the word hothead fro m the first paragraph?A. SupportiveB. FastC. NervousD. Aggressive2. What did the author do while Richard was talking in the business conference?A. He kept notes for things that he did not agree with.B. He pushed Richard and beat him.C. He was preparing for his own speech.D. He was getting ready to compliment him.3. Which of the following is the reason for quoting Jonathan Iv e?A. The author thinks Steve Jobs is the best when it comes to creativity.B. The author is inspired by Steve Job's attitude towards new ideas.C. The author respects Steve Job because he is creative and he likes ideas.D. The author thinks Steve Job has ideas that are strong and powerful and are hard to miss.4. What is the core argument that the author put forward?A. Dismissing ideas is an effortless thing to do so you should always protect ideas carefully.B. The right idea always starts from a wrong idea and you nee d to protect it from being dismissed.C. One should be careful when it comes to judge a new idea.D. Every idea, whether powerful or fragile, deserves five minutesBBats are impressive creatures. They are known to carry dang erous diseases like SARS without getting sick.So researchers wanted to know: How do bats fight off so man y deadly diseases? Learning their secret could help doctors b etter treat humans who have these diseases, therefore saving millions of lives. To solve this problem, a team of researchers from Australia a nd analyzed bat DNA. The scientists studied two kinds of bat s—the Australian megabat, known as the flying fox, and the Chin ese microbat. The scientists then arranged the bat genome (基因组) in order by comparing their DNA.The researchers now think that the special immunity (免疫性) to illness that bats have may be connected to their ability t o fly.Bats are the only mammals (哺乳动物) that can truly fly. Flying uses up a lot of energy. The energ y burned for flying produces something in the animal called fr ee radicals (自由基). Free radicals can damage DNA and lead to diseases suc h as cancer. However, bats are not affected by free radicals produced duri ng flight. The reason is that bats carry special genes to repair any damaged DNA.Scientists think that because bats fly and produce free radical s, they’ve evolved to carry genes that shaped their special im mune system.“We’re thinking that the evolution of flight led to a sort of effect , influencing not only the immune system but also things like a ging and cancer,” says Chris Cowled, of the Australian Animal Health Laboratory. “We think we’ve really found something s pecial.”Researchers believe that this discovery might one day be key to helping humans fight diseases such as cancer that attack t he immune system and damage DNA.5. What’s true about bats according to the passage?A. They carry many deadly diseases like SARS so i t’s easy fo r them to get sick.B. Bats are the only animals that can tell directions easily.C. Bats are among the mammals that can truly fly.D. Researchers studied bats to help save people.6. According to researchers, bats can fight off many deadly di seases mainly because ________.A. they have developed special immune system through evolu tionB. they are able to fly, which burns a lot of energyC. free radicals in their bodies can damage DNA and cause di seasesD. they carry no special genes to repair damaged DNA7. The passage is mainly about ________.A. bats and dangerous diseasesB. bats and their special immune systemC. free radicals and immune systemD. ways to cure cancerCThroughout history there have always been people who can make other people laugh. Early clowns (小丑) often both annoyed and delighted audiences with their co mments and songs. They were not the silent performers seen in today’s circus rings (马戏场). Clowns lost their voices when the large three-ring circuses made it impossible for the audience to hear them.Circus clowns give performances in various ways. Walk-around clowns use an animal or something as part of their per formance. A carpet clown moves around, talking with the audi ence and performing while the acts change in the rings. Then there are acrobatic clowns, riding clowns, juggling clowns and others.Everything a clown does looks easy, but it’s not. Making peopl e laugh can be hard work. Clowns must be in good physical c ondition to prevent injuries. Each funny move is carefully time d and well-practiced. Most clowns have also been trained as acrobats, ju gglers or aerial artists, and many include such skills into their acts.Generally, there are three categories of circus clowns—whiteface, auguste and character. Each has a special makeu p style and costume. Each has a typical act as well. The neat whiteface is usually a strict, in-charge character who sets up the punch line (the point of a jo ke) for the joke with a partner who is typically an auguste. His facial features are neatly detailed in red or black, and his cost umes look so loose with a ruffle around the neck.Auguste clown got his name from a German nickname for someone who is clumsy. The auguste wears light-colored makeup, but white is used around the mouth and eye s, and there’s a big red nose. This clown performs a great dea l of humor. An oversized suit or baggy trousers allow free mov ement for all the clumsy acts. He also wears big shoes. Character clowns perform as different personalities—cowboys, grandmothers or concert conductors. The most fam ous character clown, however, is the tramp. Tramps wear diff erent styles of makeup and torn costumes. Some tramp clown s are happy-go-lucky. Others are extremely sad. Still others act like gentleme n who just happen to be out of money.Clowns have a long and interesting history and use serious te chniques. However, the children and adults at the circus don’t need to know these facts to get ready for fun when they hear “Bring in the clowns!”8. According to the Paragraph 1, why did clowns lose their voi ces?A. Because they wanted to avoid annoying audiences.B. Because there were only a few audiences in the ring.C. Because audiences often spoke louder than clowns.D. Because they could not be heard in the three-ring circuses.9. If a clown is dressed in baggy clothing, which type of clown does he belong to?A. The auguste or the whitefaceB. The w hiteface or the characterC. The auguste or the characterD. T he riding clown or the tramp10. What makes the character clowns different?A. He plays a leading role in performances.B. He wears more attractive make-up.C. He performs in a more funny way.D. He ac ts in different characters.11. What is the passage mainly about?A. The long history of clowns.B. Varied o pinions on clowns.C. Some basic facts about clowns.D. Th ree different types of clowns.DCan you be too beautiful? It is hardly a problem that most of u s have to bother — as much as we might like to dream that it were the case.Yet the blessings and curses of beauty have been a long-standing interest in psychology. Do those blessed with shiny f aces and an attractive body live in a cloud of appreciation —or does it sometimes pay to be ordinary?Combing through decades of findings, social psychologists Li sa Slattery Walker and Tonya Frevert at the University of Nort h Carolina at have reviewed all the evidence to date and their conclusions are not what you might expect. At the most basic level, beauty might be thought to carry a kin d of halo(光环) around it; we see that someone has one good quality, and by association, our deep mind may assume that they have ot her good ones too.Even in the courts, a pleasing appearance can work its magic. Attractive criminals are likely to get less strict sentences, or t o escape punishment entirely; attractive plaintiffs(原告), meanwhile, are more likely to win their case and get bigg er financial settlements. “It’s an effect seen everywhere,” says .But if beauty pays in most circumstances, there are still situati ons where it can have opposite results. While attractive men may be considered better leaders, for instance, hidden sexist prejudices(偏见) can work against attractive women, making them less likely to be hired for high-level jobs that require power. And as you might expect, good-looking people of both sexes run into envy — one study found that if you are interviewed by someone of the same sex, they may be less likely to employ you if they judge that you are mo re attractive than they are.More worryingly, being beautiful or handsome could harm you r medical care. We tend to link good looks to health, meaning that illnesses are often taken less seriously when they affect t he good-looking. When treating people for pain, for instance, doctors t end to take less care over the more attractive people. And the bubble of beauty can be a somewhat lonely place. O ne study in 1975, for instance, found that people tend to move further away from a beautiful woman on the pathway — perh aps as a mark of respect, but still making interaction more dist ant. “Attractiveness can convey more power over visible spac e — but that in turn can make others feel they can’t approach that person,” says Frevert. Interestingly, the online dating web site OKCupid recently reported that people with the most bea utiful pictures are less likely to find dates than those with less perfect pictures.Ultimately, Frevert points out that focusing too much on yourappearance can itself be harmful if it creates stress and anxiet y — even for those already blessed with good looks. “If you ar e crazy about attractiveness, it may affect your experience an d interactions,” she says. It’s an outdated saying, but no amou nt of beauty can make up for a bad personality. As the writer Dorothy Parker put it so elegantly: “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone.”12. You don't need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, youcan see that happiness is always around you.Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can't be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转) door. . When it closes, it also opens.
