如今，科技逐渐发达，经济素质也不断提高，人们的生活质量也得到好转。
打从人类学会用火，懂得使用燃料的那一天起，就开始了对大气的污染。
但真正对大气构成污染危害的，则是现代工业兴起，大量使用煤炭做燃料以后的事。
第二次世界大战后，工业化国家利用的燃料中，石油在一定程度上取代了煤炭的地位，但由于燃料大幅度增长，二氧化碳和二氧化硫等气体污染仍在继续。
此外，汽车大量增加，排放的尾气含有碳氧化物和碳氧化合物，加剧了城市大气污染，某些工业生产，不仅排放有害气体，还夹杂大量粉尘；大气层核实验产生的有放射性降落物和扬尘农业生产喷洒的农药中部分挥发性物质，也可能逸进大气。
以上种种原因加剧了大气污染。
森林砍伐，草被破坏，土壤沙漠化，都会导致大气中扬尘增加。
然而，人们却仍然执迷不悟地滥砍滥伐，促使绿色面积大大减少。
城市周围，原本是清澈的水流，现在一条条变黑了，鱼儿被垃圾所取代，散发出阵阵恶臭，人们工业发展逐渐提高，工厂一栋栋拔地而起，但是，人们将大量工业和生活的污水直接排到坦然水体中，使水资源大大受污，人类对水体污染造成的危害，有一个逐步认识的过程。
其实，污染早就存在。
