Although in her short life, Austen only created six works, her effect in literary world has never changed. The theme of all her novels is love and marriage, and among all, Pride and Prejudice is the work that can best reflect Jane Austen’s views of marriage. Pride and Prejudice mainly focuses on the love and marriage of five girls from Bennet. The novel reflects the author’s views on love marriage: love, money, status and character. Marriage should be based on love and respect, and in addition, money provides the practical foundation for the stability of the marriage. Taking all of the factors into consideration, we can establish a happy marriage. This thesis aims at exploring Jane Austen’s marital views by analyzing the personality and marriages of the characters in the novel. It can be divided into three parts: the first part deals with the background of the society and Jane Austen’s life experience; the second part deals with the analysis of the main characters and their marriage with the aim of revealing the writer’s views on marriage; the last part focuses on the effect and inspiration from Jane Austen’s view on marriage. We can get the conclusion that marriage plays an important role in our lives, since it has a lot to do with our happiness. Choosing a suitable partner for marriage means a lot; therefore, love should be put on the first place. Jane Austen’s views of marriage give us much inspiration, it can also rouse female’s sense of independence and freedom.Key words: Pride and Prejudice; marriage; love; inspirationContentsAbstract (Chinese) (i)Abstract (English) (ii)Contents (iii)1.0 Introduction (1)2.0 The background of society and Jane Austen (2)3.0 Four different marriages in Pride and Prejudice................................. . Although she was unmarried the whole life, the theme of her novels were love and marriage, basically, the love and marriage between a gentleman and a fairy lady. Her best-known works are Emma (1815), Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Sense and Sensibility (1811).The novel talks about four different marriages: Collin and Challote’s marriage which is based on money; Lydia and Wickham’s marriage which is based on lust; Jane and Bingley’s marriage which is based on sense, Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage which is based on love. Which weighs the most in marriage, love, possession, or social status? Jane Austen has different attitude and description about the four marriages. The first sentence in this novel is impressive. It says: “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not love but possession, but Jane Austen tells us a different story. The main story of this novel happens between Elizabeth Bennet and Darcy. Elizabeth Bennet is a 20-year-old young lady. She is her father's favourite daughter and inherits his intelligence and wisdom. Darcy is a pride and kind gentleman with great fortune. Although, they were not attracted by each other at the very beginning, because they all have some complaints about the other, Elizabeth loathes Darcy’s arrogance, and she also has some misunderstandings on him, Darcy thinks Elizabeth is a very proud girl, and her families leave an awful impression on him. But at last, they fall in love and have a happy marriage. What changes their attitude towards each other? Because the pride and prejudice between them is long gone. They finally know each other deeply and accept each other. Their marriage is rooted in their love and respect. Comparing with other marriages in the story, Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage is the perfect one. The story reflects the author’s marriage view: it is wrong to marry just for the possession, lust and position. She emphasizes the importance of the ideal marriage that we should marry for love and emotion.Elizabeth and Darcy have a happy ending not only because of their love, but to some extent, Darcy’s property provides them the material need. From this we can see the author’s views: marriage is based on love, but property and position should be taken into account. In modern society, a lot of people marriage for money and social status, sometimes, it leads to a sad ending. I think, no matter when, Jane Austen’s views on marriage are of great value in leading us to the ideal marriage. My thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter deals with the background of the society and Jane Austen’s life experience, and how does those factors influence her writings; the second chapter reveal the authors views on marriage and the standard of the ideal marriage advocated by Jane Austen through analyzing the characters and their marriage in the story; the last chapter talks about the conditions of the modern marriage and how to found the ideal marriage from the inspiration of Jane Austen’s view on marriage.2.0 The background of the society and Jane AustenIn 18th and 19th centuries, the England society’s had serious social problems. One of the severest of these was the tendency to marry for money. A person sought a partner based on the dowry receivable and their allowance. In the 19th century, women were not well respected compared with the ones in the present society. There was no equality between woman and man. Women were considered to be inferior to men in terms of intelligence and capacity. The central life of women was forced to be staying at home. Their roles were to deal with the family affairs, such as taking care of the children and serving for the husband. This process went both ways: a beautiful woman might be able to snag a rich husband, or a charring and handsome man could woo a rich young girl. In these marriages, money was the only consideration. Love was left out, with the thought that it would develop as the years went by. Jane Austen (December 16, 1775--July 18, 1817), an outstanding female novelist of British, was born in the village of Steventon, near Basingstoke, in Hampshire. Her father is the local vicar. She did not have the normal schooling, but she got good education from family's literature teaching. From the end of the 18th century to the early 19th century, “the sentiment novel” and “the gothic novel” were the themes of Englishliterature, while Austen made a different way. Most of her works were about romantic love. That might have something to do with her failure in marriage. Jane Austen was unmarried her whole life, but she had fallen in love with a young man. Their love was pure and faithful. However, this young man had to submit to the marriage that his aunt arranged for him, because he was under lots of burden from family. Then Jane broke up with him, since she did not want to stand in the way of the young man’s future, and a lso in her opinion, marriage should be based on love. She loved no one else after that. That is the reason why she was unmarried all her life. So she put all her feelings in creating romantic and happy marriages.3.0 Four different marriages in Pride and Prejudice3.1 Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriageOnce Mr. Qian Zhongshu has compared marriage to a castle, b ut I don’t think this marriage theory is suitable for Darcy and Elizabeth. The marriage is tortuous between them but deep-rooted of love based. As we all know, Elizabeth and Darcy left a quite bad impression on each other at the beginning. Elizabeth thinks Darcy is insolent and arrogant, and Darcy does not like Elizabeth because of Elizabeth’s social class and her indecent relatives. But Darcy finally rea lized Elizabeth's preciousness, and Elizabeth’s prejudice and misunderstandings towards Darcy are gone. They deeply in love and possess a wonderful marriage at last. Their love and marriage are tortuous and kind of mysterious. I will analysis their marriage start with analyzing the two characters.Elizabeth Bennet is a person who is worth our imitation. She is a model because she is different from the others. She does not adhere rigidly to the standards set forth by society, she is self-reliant and independent. She is wit and intelligent. Most of the girls married in pursuit of money and fame at that time, even her best friend Chalotte who married a rich man for changing her poor conditions. However, Elizabeth is not submit to this mood of society. She would never violate her principle and her integrity. She is like the pure lotus that lives in mud but never contaminated by the dirty. That is the reason why she rejects Mr. Collin's proposal, because she would not marry without love. On the other hand, she doesnot totally disregard social costumes. She has good manners; her slight breach of decorum is justified by walking alone to Nether field Park to visit her sister who is ill with her genuine concern. She has good manners. When Lady Catherine criticizes Elizabeth skill of playing piano, she can have good manners to keep polite. Mr. Darcy is pride on the surface, but we know he is warm-hearted. He is a good friend, he is afraid that Mr. Bingley would be cheated and hurt by Jane, although he is proved wrong later. He is a good brother; he takes care of his younger sister very well. He is kind; he helps Wickham and Lydia with money even though he was misunderstood by Elizabeth because of Wickham’s rumors. The two people’s personalities are clear and sharp. At the first time, Elizabeth and her sisters go to attend the ball held in Meryton, and she is coldly treated by Darcy, but she uses her healthy sense of humor to joke about Mr. Darcy’s rude behavior at the ball. Darcy is handsome, tall, and intelligent, but not convivial, his indifferent manners are seen by many as an excessive pride and concern for social status. He makes a poor impression on strangers, but he is valued by those who know him well. He gradually finds out Elizabeth’s intelligence, wisdom and beauty. He begins pursuing her. However, at the beginning, Elizabeth rejects his love expression, because she does not like him, even looks down on him though Darcy loves her very much. In Elizabeth’s eyes, Darcy is arrogant and unreasonable because he is rich and has high social status. Realizing that, Darcy begins to get rid of those bad habits quietly. Because of Darcy’s perfect behavior and good education, Elizabeth gradually eliminates the prejudice on Darcy. Most importantly, the misunderstanding, prejudice and pride are disappearing as they know each other better and better. Then they spontaneously fall in love. So Elizabeth accept Darcy’s proposal at the second time, then they get married and have happy family lives.3.2 Jane and Bingley’s marriageIn this novel, the combination of pleasant Bingley and mild Jane is one of the most blessed and happy marriages. The couple has similar interests and they insist on pursuing their true love which leads them to a happy and perfect marriage. Mr. Bingley was a handsome and gentleman with great fortune. As a young man who is well-bred, he wascordial and simple. With this character he never appeared dissatisfied. He is easy to get along and constant in love although he is extremely rich. However he is in short of strength and independence in his marriage which is a big weakness of him. In this story, Bingley is popular with almost everybody in everywhere. Jane is the oldest children in her family. She is an amiable and mild girl who possesses the most beautiful appearance among her sisters. As an introverted girl, she is faithful in love but lacks strength and self-confidence. She is too shy to profess her love towards Bingley, nor admit it, thought she has feelings for Bingley at the time they met. Sometimes she is a little innocent. In her eyes, everybody is nice. She never see through the rotten side of life even she is deceived. Her character is vividly showed in many parts of the novel. So it seems quite natural for Jane to fall in love with the pleasant and simple Bingley. They meet each other at the ball, they are attracted by each other at the first sight, and they dance and talk together. As times goes by, their feelings to each other are getting stronger. But Jane has no courage to express her love, she buries it in heart and for Bingley, he is not a strong and determined man. This is his advantage but also his disadvantage. His cordial and simple character causes his quiet romance with Jane. However, his weak and easily-led character causes his departure from Jane. He suddenly leaves Jane when their romance goes smoothly, which nearly put his pure love and marriage in end. To a great extent, Binley left Jane because of Darcy’s misunderstandings on Jane. They establish a steady and constant friendship although they have totally different characters. Darcy wants to help his friend. In his opinion, it is impossible for Jane to love Bingley. He thinks Jane love Bingley because Bingley is rich, but Bingley’s love for Jane is pure. He doesn’t want his best fri end get hurt. So he persuades Bingley to stay away from Jane and she is not a good marriage option. But they do love each other.During those days when Jane stays in London at Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner’s invitation, she visits Bingley’s sister in person in o rder to get some information of Mr. Bingley. At last, they get together after the misunderstanding between Elizabeth and Darcy disappears. So the love and marriage between Jane and Bingley is pure and stable. They fall in love at first sight heartily. Thei r marriage is kind of tortuous just like Elizabeth and Darcy’s, but the truelove won’t stop them from being together.3.3 Chalotte and Collin’s marriageCharlotte and Collins’s marriage is the most realistic one in the story. Their marriage is based on money instead of love. Charlotte is the best friend of Elizabeth, but they are very different in the choice of marriage. Chalotte’s parents, like the Bennet couple, can’t give her much fortune, and she is as sensible and intelligent as Elizabeth, but her pursuit for spiritual happiness is not as strong as that of Elizabeth. In addition, Chalotte is a plain girl who is a little bit prudent. As a woman who is 26 years old, her choice of marriage is entirely out of realistic consideration. When she first meets Collins, she sees his folly. When he asks her to marry him, she also clearly knows that Collins is certainly not a reasonable person. But she immediately says “yes”, because “Marriage has always been her aim, what kind of man she is going to marry as is less important”, marrying a rich man can shelter her from suffering poverty. She thinks money can bring her sense of security. William Collins, a man of 29 years old, is Mr. Bennet's distant relatives, since Mr. Bennet has no son; Collins becomes the he ir to Bennets’ estate. Jane Austen describes him as “not a sensible man, and the deficiency of nature had been but little assisted by education or society”. Informed that the eldest daughter Jane has a boyfriend, he switches his aim at the second daughter Elizabeth, but Elizabeth has no feelings for him, what’s more, Elizabeth gets tired of him. Eventually, she rejects him with sharp tongue. However, Collins quickly seeks comfort from Charlotte who is desperately in need of love from a male and believes marriage is the elegant way to save a poor girl from suffering, and then they get married as quickly as the lightning. Such marriage without love is too practical and realistic, so it is a kind of superficial marriage without happiness.Marriage is just a task for them, but Collins couples get what they want from marriage: Charlotte gets the stability and prosperity of life; Collins also gets a warm home. This is how they understand marriage. There is no love and same interests between them; their marriage is based on benefits. Although they get what they want, marriage without love is not happy and stable.3.4 Lydia and Wickham’s marriageLydia, Bennett's third daughter, is a simple, frivolous, vanity girl. She is keen on social networking at an early age, enjoying contacting with Merry's officers, and even feels proud of it. “Whenever anyone urg es, she will be put into anyone's arms. Her feelings are always kept rolling, swing”. Wickham is a handsome, actual moral, luxurious, and treacherous man. At first, he seduces wealthy Miss Darcy, but his conspiracy fails. After joined the regiment, he first does everything to please Elizabeth, and then pursues wealthy Miss Kim, finally elopes with Lydia. Then, he gets into debt. So, he needs money and become rich and changes his social status through marriage. For his purpose, he seduces Lydia and wins her love easily, because she is young, innocent and frivolous, and loves to go ease and hates to work hard, and she is also spoiled by her mother. Getting love and praise from a man is what she dreams of. So when Wickham wants to reach his aim-getting wealth by loving and exalting her beauty hypocritically, she forgets who she is and feels she is the most beautiful and happiest girl in the world. Their love is forbidden by the parents, and then they elope. When Elizabeth hears the news, she believes that he does not love her but the wealth of her family. The marriage is admitted on the condition of Darcy's help. Their marriage is considered as a scandal to Bennett’s f amily. But Mrs. Bennet is not shameful of this marriage. The marriage between Lydia and Wickham is conditional. Thanks to Darcy's help, they get married and continue their lives. This kind of marriage is doomed to be unstable. After marriage, they are extravagant; just enjoy the pleasure at the moment, never considering their future. They always ask Jane or Elizabeth for help, counting on their support to pay bills. Wickham's love for Lydia soon suffer a disastrous decline, finally he is indifference to Lydia. They get what they want: Lydia gets erotic satisfaction; Wickham, he also gets the wealth; but their marriage is not satisfactory. This is how they understand marriage.4.0 Analysis and understandings of the four marriages4.1 Perfect marriage based on true loveElizabeth and Darcy’s marriage is intricate but is the ideal marriage because their love is based on love, they cherish each other, they tolerate each other, and of course after marring Darcy who has great fortune, Elizabeth’s life and socia l status are improved, and their marriage gets material security, but at first, Elizabeth refuses the rich man- Mr. Collins’ proposal without any hesitation because she does not and will never love him, from Elizabeth’s perspective, marriage without love w ill never be happy. Elizabeth has a deep understanding of all the things around her. She has a clear understanding about her own social status. Because of this, she resists extremely against the arrogance of Darcy, and she tries to protect herself from being hurt by Darcy's insolent attitude. She believes that she must make him know that she is not woozy. The ultimate failure wakes Darcy up. He is aware of his own short-comings. He accepts Elizabeth’s criticism, and faithfully corrects the shortcomings and mistakes. He is no longer arrogant and has a faithful love with Elizabeth. I remember when the sister asks Elizabeth how she would love Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth replies that she should date from the day she see the beautiful lane manor park. The statement seems to refer to the possession of Darcy. In addition to referring to the specific manor, she also refers the new Darcy seen in the garden.Elizabeth is a wise girl; she understands that marriage involves many factors, such as love, personality, status, property. Among all, love is essential to marriage, which is the author’s views on marriage that reflected in this novel. We should take marriage seriously; impulse will destroy someone’s happy marriage. Having a clear understanding about the person you are going to marriage is vital. Whether you can live a better life both physically and mentally is important to your marriage. That is to say, all the factors should be taken into consideration carefully. Those are the reasons why Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage is the perfect one in the story.4.2 Happy marriage based on sense and similar interestsJane and Bingley’s marriage is also rooted in pure love, and also their concern for each other. It seems that their characters are quite suitable for each other. It seems that only their marriage involves purest love with no tint of money at all. Then why is not Bingley penniless but a “young man of large fortune”? This arrangement can also reflect author’s views on marriage. Love is essential for marriage, and money is also plays an important role in marriage. According to the relationship between Bingley and Jane love and similar interests are also the basic factors of a successful and happy marriage. With many similarities in character people can understand each other easily. Above all, their understandings lead to helps and supporting between them. They can live happily together in this way. They don’t care about the shortcomings of their partners and even they don’t see any faults in each other. Just as the old saying going “Birds of a feather flock together people of a mind fill into the same group”.4.3 Pathetic marriage based on money or benefitsChalotte and Collins’s marriage is kind of beyond our expectations. At that time, a girl from the low class, who has no pretty appearance and good education, takes marriage as the only way to change their situations. Jane Austen objects this marriage that based on benefits. Maybe lots of people feel pity for the females who lived in that age, but in no time should we make such hasty decision about our marriage. Many do play an important role in marriage, but a marriage without love which is just based on money won’t be pleasant, at last, people will get hurt from the painful marriage. Once I read a story from a magazine, a girl from a poor family married a rich man, she almost did nothing rather than shopping and seeking pleasures, she squandered her husband’s money so quickly, later, the man got tired of her, they divorced. The woman lost the source of money, but she has gotten used to the luxurious life, she can’t live independently. At last, she tried to blackmail some rich man and ended in jail. This is a tragedy; girls should be independent and marry the person who really loves you just like you love him. So Chal otte and Collins’s marriage is doomed to beunhappy, Chalotte once said to Elizabeth, “I am not romantic, you know; I never was, I ask only a comfortable home; and considering Mr. Collins’ character, connections, and situation in life, I am convinced that my chance of happiness with him is as fair as most people can boast on entering the marriage state.”(Pride and Prejudice, 144) Therefore, Charlotte seems to have found some kind of satisfaction and happiness in her marriage without any love. It is interesting that in such a marriage based on money-transaction, the woman from poor family does marry a single man with a good fortune, but the husband himself has nothing to do with the enjoyment the marriage bring to her.4.4 Absurd marriage based on lust and vanityThe combination of Lydia and Wickham is absurd. Her admiration to Wickham is entirely up to his “handsome face, comely shape and charming talk”. Their relationship is entirely built on lust and impulse without love foundation. Their marriage is neither practical nor romantic. Lydia and Wickham’s marriage is built on sex lust and impulse. It is kind of ridiculous. They treat their marriage so carelessly, it is impossible for them to get a happy marriage. Lydia is attracted by Wickham’s handsome sur face at first. As a flippant girl, she seeks sexual pleasure. Then they make a rash decision to get married. This marriage is one without love. They don’t understand the real meaning of marriage; they only want to satisfy their aspiration. So this is a kind of impromptu love and marriage without true love and responsibility.4.5 Jane Austen’s views on marriageAfter reading the novel, we can see that people’s views on marriage in England at that time. In the 18th century, women longed for marrying a gentleman who possessed considerable wealth and high social status. Love, seems count for nothing. This was because at that time, women were forbidden from inheriting the possession. Marring a rich man was their only way to live a decent life after their fat hers’ death. That is the reason why Mrs. Bonnet is crazy to marry her daughters off. However, Austen has her own idea. She also emphasizes love. From her perspective, happy marriage is equal to “love + wealth +equal social status”. Marriage should be based on love and trust. People can’t just marry someone for whom he/she has no feelings at all. Austen also points that wealth and social status put great importance on marriage. Austen casts her criticism to the dark fact that people’s attention is only on property and high social status. In Austen’s eyes, marriage without love is contemptuous. We know Elizabeth and Darcy, also Jane and Bingley, both have a happy marriage. From these two cases, we can find out what kind of marriage Jane Austen prefers--- love is basic; enough wealth, good behaviors and equal social status are all necessary. These two examples are exactly the right explanation of Austen’s outlook on marriage. To draw a conclusion, in the novel Pride and Prejudice, Austen casts her criticism to people who take wealth and high social states as the only factors in marriage, with neglecting love. She expresses her views on marriage that marriage should be built on love but at the same time should take wealth, characters and social status into consideration.I think Austen’s outlooks on marriage are well worth our deep consideration even today.5.0 The inspiration from Jane Austen’s views on marriageJane Austen’s views on marriage have a profound effect on lots of people, especially on females. What is marriage all about? I think it is a question that is worth our deliberation. Marriage is an everlasting topic in our lives. Throughout the literary history, many masterworks are about marriage. Everyone has his or her own understanding of it. Some marry for money, some for passion, some for love and so on. Marriage plays an important role in our life. Whether your marriage is happy or not will influence you a lot. Austen shows us a different view of marriage; also let us think that what kind of marriage we want and we suit. Many people try to find out the secret of marriage, because everyone wants to own a happy marriage. Some think that marriage contains all sorts of worldly things: house, money. To get marry is to get money; marriage is their shelters that helps them out of plight and keep them from poor or other sufferings. However, Austen shows us that marriage is built on love. It is wrong to marry for wealth or for the sake of beauty and passion of blind. Those kinds of marriage can't last long a nd we can’t get happiness. The truly happy marriage is based on love and reason. Jane Austen leaves us lots of inspirations, especially。

Key words: prejudice, pride, class, loveElizabeth Bennet - The novel’s protagonist. Th e second daughter of Mr. Bennet, Elizabeth is the most intelligent and sensible of the five Bennet sisters. She is well read and quick-witted, with a tongue that occasionally proves too sharp for her own good. Her realization of Darcy’s essential goodness eventually triumphs over her initial prejudice against him. Her admirable qualities are numerous—she is lovely, clever, and, in a novel defined by dialogue, she converses as brilliantly as anyone. Her honesty, virtue, and lively wit enable her to rise above the nonsense and bad behavior that pervade her class-bound and often spiteful society. Nevertheless, her sharp tongue and tendency to make hasty judgments often lead her astray; Pride and Prejudice is essentially the story of how she (and her true love, Darcy) overcome all obstacles—including their own personal failings—to find romantic happiness. Elizabeth must not only cope with a hopeless mother, a distant father, two badly behaved younger siblings, and several snobbish, antagonizing females, she must also overcome her own mistaken impressions of Darcy, which initially lead her to reject his proposals of marriage. Her charms are sufficient to keep him interested, fortunately, while she navigates familial and social turmoil. As she gradually comes to rec ognize the nobility of Darcy’s character, she realizes the error of her initialprejudice against him.Fitzwilliam Darcy - A wealthy gentleman, the master of Pemberley, and the nephew of Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Though Darcy is intelligent and honest, his excess of pride causes him to look down on his social inferiors. Over the course of the novel, he tempers his class-consciousness and learns to admire and love Elizabeth for her strong character. Darcy is Elizabeth’s male counterpart. The narrator relates Elizabeth’s point of view of events more often than Darcy’s, so Elizabeth often seems a more sympathetic figure. The reader eventually realizes, however, that Darcy is her ideal match. Intelligent and forthright, he too has a tendency to judge too hastily and harshly, and his high birth and wealth make him overly proud and overly conscious of his social status. Indeed, his haughtiness makes him initially bungle his courtship. When he proposes to her, for instance, he dwells more on how unsuitable a match she is than on her charms, beauty, or anything else complimentary. Her rejection of his advances builds a kind of humility in him. Darcy demonstrates his continued devotion to Elizabeth, in spite of his distaste for her low connections, when he rescues Lydia and the entire Bennet family from disgrace, and when he goes against the wishes of his haughty aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, by continuing to pursue Elizabeth. Darcy proves himself worthy of Elizabeth, and she ends up repenting her earlier, overly harsh judgment of him.Mr. Bennet - The patriarch of the Bennet family, a gentleman of modest income with five unmarried daughters. Mr. Bennet has a sarcastic, cynical sense of humor that he uses to purposefully irritate his wife. Though he loves his daughters (Elizabeth in particular), he often fails as a parent, preferring to withdraw from the never-ending marriage concerns of the women around him rather than offer help.Mrs. Bennet - Mr. Bennet’s wife, a foolish, noisy woman whose only goal in life is t o see her daughters married. Because of her low breeding and often unbecoming behavior, Mrs. Bennet often repels the very suitors whom she tries to attract for her daughters.Mrs. Bennet - Mr. Bennet’s wife, a foolish, noisy woman whose only goal in lif e is to see her daughters married. Because of her low breeding and often unbecomingbehavior, Mrs. Bennet often repels the very suitors whom she tries to attract for her daughters.Pride and Prejudice contains one of the most cherished love stories in English literature: the courtship between Darcy and Elizabeth. Elizabeth’s pride makes her misjudge Darcy on the basis of a poor first impression, while Darcy’s prejudice against Elizabeth’s poor social standing blinds him, for a time, to her many virtues. (Of course, one could also say that Elizabeth is guilty of prejudice and Darcy of pride—the title cuts both ways.) Darcy and Elizabeth’s realization of a mutual and tender love seems to imply that Austen views love as something independent of these social forces, as something that can be captured if only an individual is able to escape the warping effects of hierarchical society. The theme of class is related to reputation, in that both reflect the strictly regimented nature of life for the middle and upper classes in Regency England. The lines of class are strictly drawn. In a sense, Pride and Prejudice is the story of two courtships—those between Darcy and Elizabeth and between Bingley and Jane. Within this broad structure appear other, smaller courtships: Mr. Collins’s aborted wooing of Elizabeth, followed by his successful wooing of Charlotte Lucas; Miss Bingley’s unsuccessful attempt to attract Darcy; Wickham’s pursuit first of Elizabeth, then of the never-seen Miss King, and finally of Lydia. Courtship therefore takes on a profound, if often unspoken, importance in the novel. Marriage is the ultimate goal, courtship constitutes the real working-out of love. Courtship becomes a sort of forge of a person’s personality, and each courtship becomes a microcosm for different sorts of love (or different ways to abuse love as a means to social advancement).References:/lit/pride/canalysis.html/viewpaper/6941.html。

The paper aims to analyse Elizabeth’s character, her marriage view and her female consciousness.Key words Elizabeth; character; marriage view; femaleIntroductionIn this novol, the main emotion clue is the love experience between Elizabeth and Darcy and their attitudes towards each other. The heroline Elizabeth has prejudice against Darcy at the first sight. While after Wickham springing out in her life, the heroine’s emotional experience twists a lot. Afterwords, Elizabeth hate Darcy extremely and refuse his proposal when she learns that Darcy destroyed her sister and Bingley’s relationship. At the same time, she insults him that “if you are the last man in the world, you can not even think to convince me to marry you.” Finally after their communication, Darcy proposes to Elizabeth again. Because she eliminates the prejudice against Darcy guadually, they finally have a happy ending.Elizabeth is a young lady in the middle calss, receved secondary education, and is a daughter of a gentle. However, her family status are lower than the aristocracy. She often feels ashamed that her relatives and friends behavior ugly in public because they haven’t received education.2 Elizabeth’s main charactersElizabeth is a daughter of a British gentleman in the middle class in the eighteen century. Her mother is secular and vain. There are five sisters in the family. All the other sisters are philistine and vulgar like their mother, except that the eldest sister is reasonable. Her relatives also come from poor families and in low social status. Elizabeth has not only an attractive appearance but also the quality of optimism, self-esteem, purity and wisdom that women rarely have at that time.First of all, there is no doubt that the heroine loves her families deeply. When Jane gets cold, even it is a slight flu, Elizabeth walks alone in the mud to take care of Jane, regardless of the long distance and awkward state, while her mother and sisters think it doesn’t matter. In her opinion, all she thinks about is her sister, and she has to take care of her sister at that time. What’s more, when she learns that Darcy destroyed her sister and Bingley’s happiness, she refuses his proposal, although he is hansome, talented and rich enough. One of the biggest features of Elizabeth is her prejudice. Her prejudice is somekind of bigotry, and a lot of scenes reflect this character. When she first met Darcy, all the ladies are attracted by his hansome looking, his good manner and his big fortune. However she feels that he is not a big deal when he shows arrogance to her. She feels like that he is not worthy of her attention at all. At the same time, her crush on Mr Wickham is another manifestation of her character. She is not blinded by secular view of marriage. She has reasons to believe that people is always changing, so we can’t trust people just because their one shining point. However it is she that thinks to fall in love with Wickham just because her appearance and some light contactions. In addition, Elizabeth is born with a high level of self-esteem. At her age of 20, as a female, she never flatters the powerful people on purpose. On the contrary, her self-esteem and self respect express her resistance against reality in her own unique way. Darcy’s aunt interferes with her marriage, who is arrogant and has the status of the eminent lady. However Elizabeth did not scruple to her position. She did not feel shocked or awed, but responding to her in tit-for-tat sound. She said that you have no right to ask me, like this one, and don’t want me to frankly state. I don’t have to pretend to be as frank as you madam, so you can ask me questions, but I don’t have to answer. When the lady asks her to refuse the marriage with Darcy, she retorts, “it is my right to choose who to live with. I choose the choice to make me happy, and you don't have right to interfere with my decision.” This self-respect answer comes from a middle-class woman, which is very rare.ConclusionThis paper briefly introduces Elizabeth’s love for her family and her prejudice. The heroine does not follow the social rules to marry a man with fortune, but dares to search her true love. She sets a good example to females to be decisive and know what they really wants. It is inapproprite to marry for money ,or to regard marriage as a trifling matter.Reference[1]Austen,Jane.Pride and Prej-udice.

I am convinced that When Charles gets to toWn, he Will be in no hurry to leave it again. I do not pretend to regret anything I shall leave in Hertfordshire, my dearest friend, exceptyour society. Mr Darcy, of course, is impatient to see his sister. And toconfess the truth, I'm scarcely less eager to meet her again, from the hope I dare to entertain of her being hereafter... my sister. Am I Wrong, my dearest Jane, in indulging the hope of an event Which Would secure the happiness of so many? Is it not clear enough? Caroline Bingley believes her brother is indifferent to me and she means to put me on my guard. - Can there be any other opinion on the subject? Miss Bingley sees that her brother is in love with you, and she wants him to marry Miss Darcy. She hopes to keep him in town and persuade you that he does not care about you. Indeed, Jane, you ought to believe me. No one who has seen you and Bingley together can doubt his affection. I cannot believe Caroline is capable of wilful deceit. All I can hope for is that she is deceived herself. Believe her to be deceived, by all means, but she can hardly convince a man so much in love that he's in love with someone else instead! If Bingley is not back by your side and dining at Longbourn withintwo weeks, I shall be very much surprised. I don't envy Charlotte in the slightest! Fancy marrying a clergyman! - He'll read from Fordyce's sermons every night. Look at that hideous cloth! But fate, it would seem... With you I must be entirely open. I decided that it would be wrong for me to be there. I found that I had better not meet with Mr Darcy. Scenes might arise unpleasant to more than myself. I understand and admire your forbearance. Not that it would give me a moment's concern to see Mr Darcy publicly set down, but in Mr Bingley's house... It would grieve me to see him embarrassed and discomfited. And through him, your sister. 是的- I hear Mr Collins is engaged to be married. 我听说令表兄科林斯先生要结婚了- Yes, to my good friend Charlotte Lucas. I had thought that his intentions tended in another direction. Perhaps they did, but they took a little turn, to everybody's satisfaction. And relief. Oh, indeed he is. It was very good of him to entertain us so eloquently with stories about his misfortunes. With such narratives to hand, who would read novels? But I believe he has been treated contemptibly by Mr Darcy, father. I dare say he has. Though Darcy may be no more of a black-hearted villain than your average rich man, used to his own way. It behoves us all to take very careful thought before pronouncing an adverse judgement on any of our fellow men. Lord! I feel very sorry for poor Mr Wickham. And so becoming in his regimentals! I remember the time when I liked a red coat myself well enough. And I do still in my heart. And there's no need to smile like that, Miss Lizzy! Though Mr Wickham has taken a fancy to you, I'm sure you've done nothing to deserve it, after your dealings with Mr Collins! Well, it is all in vain, it will all come to nothing! The poor young man! If only he had five or six thousand a year, I'd be happy to see him marry any of the girls! But nothing turns out the way it should. And now Mr Bingley, of whom we all had such expectations, is gone off forever! 什么?I've heard again from Caroline Bingley. It's now definite that they will stay in town for the whole winter. 我不敢相信It is true. Come now, Jane, take comfort. Next to being married, a girl likes to be crossed in love now and then. When is it your turn,Lizzy? You can't be long outdone by Jane, when here are officers enough in Meryton to disappoint all the young ladies in the country. Let Wickham be your man. He's a pleasant fellow. He would jilt you creditably. Thank you, sir, but a less agreeable man would do. We must not all expect Jane's good fortune. True, but it is a comfort to think... that whatever of that kind may befall you, you have an affectionate mother who will always make the most of it. I don't know what will become of us all, indeed I do not! And I cannot bear to think of Charlotte Lucas being mistress of this house! That I should be forced to make way for her, and see her take my place! My dear, don't give way to such gloomy thoughts. At least I have not had that pain. My dear Jane. You're too good. Your sweetness and disinterestedness are truly angelic. 别笑我,丽西- Indeed I do not tease you. There are few people whom I really love, and even fewer of whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more I am dissatisfied with it. Jane, what if you were to go to town? Aunt and Uncle Gardiner would gladly take you with them to Gracechurch Street after Christmas. 我相信卡地那舅舅和舅母一定很乐意在圣诞节后带着你回格雷斯查奇街- Why would you have me go to London, Lizzy? THE first week of their return was soon gone. The second began. It was the last of the regiment ’s stay in Meryton ,and all the young ladies in the neighbourhood were drooping apace. The dejection was almost universal. The elder Miss Bennets alone were still able to eat ,drink ,and sleep ,and pursue the usual course of their employments.Very frequently were they reproached for this insensibility by Kitty and Lydia ,whose own misery was extreme ,and who could not comprehend such hard-heartedness in any of the family.“Good Heaven !What is to become of us !What are we to do !”would they often exclaim in the bitterness of woe.“How can you be smiling so ,Lizzy ?”Their affectionate mother shared all their grief ;she remembered what she had herself endured on a similar occasion ,five and twenty years ago.“I am sure ,”said she ,“I cried for two days together when Colonel Millar ’s regiment went away.I thought I should have broke my heart.”“I am sure I shall break mine ,”said Lydia.“If one could but go to Brighton !”observed Mrs.Bennet.《傲慢与偏见》(Pride and Prejudice )是英国女小说家简·奥斯汀的长篇小说。

Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece of Jane Austen who was a famous woman writer in the early 19th century. By describing Bennet’s five daughters’different attitudes to marriage, the author reveals her unique view on woman’s attitude towards love and marriage in that realistic age. The novel highlighted the character of Elizabeth to express the author’s pursuit ofself-realization and her awareness of feminism. This paper first explores Elizabeth’s personality in the terms of plot, conversation and comparison between other figures, especially on Elizabeth’s self-esteem, intelligence, reason, pursuit of freedom and equality. Then this paper sums up the deep causesof Elizabeth’s which are affected by internal factors, external factors as well as the influence of Austen’s feminism. From the above analysis, readers might get a deep understanding of the image of Elizabeth.1. Introduction1.1 Introduction of the authorJane Austen (1775-1817), an early 19th century woman writer, has been regarded as a great classic novelist in World literature. Austen was born in 1775 at Steventon in Hampshire, England. As a daughter of the local rector, although she never accepted formal school education, she was well educated by her family. The wide range of activities within the Austen family –country walks, charades, reading, writing stories and family plays constituted a rich informal education for the children, and stimulated Jane Austen’s ambition to become a novelist [1]1. As a matter of fact, besides drawing and playing the piano, all her education was closely linked to read her father’s books of both the serious and the popular literature of the day. So she read a lot, at the age of 11or 12, she began to write [2]1. During her life, she looked upon her writing as her child. As a female novelist, with her unique feminine sensitivity, she focused on love and marriage of the women at that time and finished six vivid and dramatic novels through her short life: Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1816), Northanger Abbey (1818), and Persuasion (1818). Her novels are highly praised not only for their light irony, humor of her contemporary English country life, but also for their underlying serious quality. “For Jane Austen was compelled to accomplish an almost unprecedented feat—to become an artist while remaining a lady.”[3]345 Walt Scott recognized her achievement in Pride and Prejudice and confided to his journal, “That young lady had a talent for describing the involvements and feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I never met with. They indicate the confirmation of Austen’s status in the literary field. This confirmation comes from the profundity her works reveal and her special insight into the society she lived in.”[4]56Austen is good at describing people’s different kinds of marriage from the perspective of people’s pursuit and value of marriage. From her novels, readers can get a clear picture of the customs of the upper middle class, such as the relation betweenmarriage and fortune, the awakening of women at that time, etc [2]2 . Pride and Prejudice is her representative novel. The title, Pride and Prejudice, is originated from one sentence in a book Evelina written by an English writer called Fanny Burney. The sentence is roughly like this: “the whole unfortunate accident is the outcome of Pride and Prejudice.”The initial title of the novel “Pride and Prejudice”is “First Impressions”[5]31. Austen began to write Pride and Prejudice at the age of 21, but the manuscript “went begging”for 16 years at the doors of publishers before it was published in 1813. The plot is simple, but the author has described vivid pictures of the everyday life of simple country society. Through the description of the daily talks and activities of young men and women, Austen paints their characteristics. She is at her best in writing about young girls, because she understands them very well.1.2 Plot of Pride and PrejudicePride and Prejudice focuses on a pair of sisters as they pursue prospects for marriage. There are five Bennet sisters in all, including the beautiful Jane, the clever Elizabeth, the bookish Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia, who have beenraised by their shallow mother with one purpose in life: finding a husband for each of her daughter. Because lacking of a male heir, Mr. Bennet’s property has been inherited to his nearest male relative, Reverend William Collins. Their lives are turned upside down when a wealthy young man Mr. Bingley and his best friend Mr. Darcy arrive in their neighborhood. Bingley immediately falls in love with Jane because of her beauty and sweetness. However, his noble friend Mr. Darcy offends Elizabeth by pronouncing her “tolerable”looking and refusing to ask her to dance. From then on, Elizabeth holds a deep-rooted prejudice against Darcy. However, Mr. Darcy finds himself increasingly attracted by Elizabeth’s charm and intelligence. Elizabeth meets Darcy by accident while visiting Charlotte and Mr. Collins. She is shocked when Darcy suddenly proposes to her, and angrily rejects him, accusing him of separating Bingley and Jane and of being unjust to Wickham and of humiliating her and her relatives. The next day Darcy gives her a letter explaining and justifying his conduct. Elizabeth gradually comes to accept the truth of everything Darcy says and has more reason than ever to regret her prejudice against the man. But then Elizabeth’s sister Lydia elopes with Wickham, who has no intention of marrying her. Darcy deals with this event quickly, who pressures Wickham intohonoring his commitment thereby preserving the Bennet family’s good reputation. [11]18-20 At last, when Darcy returns to the neighborhood, he comes to propose again. This time he is accepted.2. The manifestations of Elizabeth’s character“I must confess that I think her as delightful a character as ever appeared in print, and how I shall be able to tolerate those who do not like her at least I do not know.”[6]4 This was how Jane Austen described her character Elizabeth Bennet. From this sentence, we can see that Elizabeth is Austen’s favorite character. Austen’s attitude and her ideal of life are expressed through Elizabeth’s rational view of love and marriage, her actual choice and her satisfactory ending. [2]25 Elizabeth’s light spirit and courage, wit and readiness as well as good sense and good feeling make her stand above other characters in the book.2.1 ReasonComparatively speaking, Elizabeth is the most wise and rational person in her family. Her mother “was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper”[7]3; her father is able to adapt himself to different circumstances and very passive; and her three sisters who are very shallow, reckless, self-willed. Elizabeth lives in a world which full of the foolish people, but she is the only one who has the ability of reason. From the above analysis, we can draw a conclusion that Elizabeth is out of the ordinary and has worldly wisdom.“She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.”[7]8 Although Mr. Darcy refused to dance with her and made unfavorable remarks on her on their first meeting in the dancing party, Elizabeth could still tell the story of Darcy’s insult to her friends [8]46. This action shows her maturity and her ability to see humor even in something offensive to her, “for she had a lively playful disposition, which delighted in anything ridiculous”[7]9. After the first dancing party, the conversation between Elizabeth and her elder sister, Jane, reveals that Elizabeth can see the faults of Bingley’s sisters whereas Jane can not. “Elizabeth…with more quickness of observation and less pliancy of temper than hersister, and with a judgment too unassailed by any attention to herself, she was very little disposed to approve them. They were in fact very fine ladies; …but proud and conceited”[7]11.Elizabeth shows her ability of reason in handling marriage. The most impressive scene is that she refuses Mr. Collins’s proposal, though Collins warns her that other proposals may not be made to her because of her impoverishment. However, Elizabeth doesn’t love him, she refuses his proposal firmly. She would rather stay single than marry to Mr. Collins. She can choose the proper things that suit her. So Elizabeth’s pride is based on her ability of observation, analysis and selection. When Elizabeth realizes the truth and tries to overcome her prejudice to Darcy, her reason plays an important role. After she read of Darcy’s letter by self-reflection, analysis, comparison and self-criticism, she not only changes her mind against Darcy, but also comes to a moment of intense realization of herself[9]65-66. “She grew absolutely ashamed of herself. Of neither Darcy nor Wickham could she think without feeling that she had been blind, partial, prejudice, absurd. ”[7]178 She said, “I never knew myself.”To deny one self is really the beginning of one’s progress. Here Jane Austen put forward a positive view of lifeand suggests a way of finding a valid mode of existence, of achieving harmony. The world as it is, but the individual can define his world, and thus conquers it to lead a contented, yet aware life if he is prepared to take a painful and possible difficult path [3]345.2.2 Self-esteemCompared with Darcy, the difference is that Elizabeth doesn’t have a sense of superiority on her social status and family origin, on the contrary, she has clear awareness and special sensitivity [10]84-86. Thus when Elizabeth rejects Lady Catherine’s despotic demand, she evaluates herself by counterpart’s moral values, saying, “Your nephew is a gentleman, I am a gentleman’s daughter, so far we are equal. [7]306”In contrast with Charlotte Luca’s obsequiousness before Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Elizabeth is without doubt much more respectable for her self-esteem. Elizabeth behaves quite admirably when she condemns the lady to her face that she is not entitled to interfere in her concerns, and directly makes clear her standpoint.“I am only resolved to act in that manner which will, in my own opinion, constitute my happiness, without reference to you, or to any person so wholly unconnected with me.”[7]307When Lady Catherine thinks younger girls in a family were not permitted to enter the society before their elder sisters did so, and insults Elizabeth’s parents who are regarded doesn’t educate their daughters good, Elizabeth is against the convention at that time.“I think it would be very hard upon younger sisters that they should not have their share of society and amusement because the elder may not have the means or inclination to marry early. The last-born has as good a right to the pleasures of youth as the first. And to be kept back on such a motive! I think it would not be very likely to promote sisterly affection or delicacy of mind. [7]143”2.3 IntelligenceAt the first chapter of the book, Mr. Bennet appraises his five daughters saying, “They are all silly and ignorant like other girls; but Lizzy has something more of quickness than her sisters”[7]3.From this sentence, we have a first impression that Elizabeth’s intelligence is much better than her sisters’. We also can see Elizabeth’s intelligence through her conversation. Her dialogue with Darcy, her father and Jane is full of humor, keen analysis and wise comprehension. We just appreciate one wonderful conversation between Elizabeth and Darcy. Clever as Darcy is, he cannot easily overcome Elizabeth in battle of wits [11]14. When Miss Bingley is playing a lively Scotch air, Darcy asks Elizabeth to dance a reel. Elizabeth attempts to revenge Darcy for his previous refusal to accept her as dancer partner because of her “tolerable”figure.“She smiled, but made no answer. He repeated the question, with some surprise at her silence.“Oh!”said she, “I heard you before; but I could not immediately determine what to say in reply. You wanted me, I know, to say ‘yes’, that you might have the pleasure of despising my taste; but I always delight in overthrowing those kind of schemes, and cheating a person of their premeditated contempt, I have therefore made up my mind to tell you that I do not want to dance a reel at all—and now despise me if you dare.”[7]43Elizabeth seldom speaks without an elegant manner. She “has more freedom of maneuver with language, more conceptual space to move around in, [12]87”and as a result, she can forecast things and is capable of independence and think out conclusions of her own. Compared with Jane whose manner is elegant and temper is mild, Elizabeth has advantages of owning much sense. Unlike Jane who thinks everyone is kind, Elizabeth can think more deeply than her. She advises Jane not too honest to see through the foolishness and dullness of those who pretend to be frank to her. She always points out those people’s inconsistency to Jane [5]32. She makes the exact judgment about their tales in breaking the love affairs between M r. Bingley and Jane.Elizabeth has “more quickness of observation and is capable of both complex impressions and complex ideas”[12]88. Her first impression about Darcy’s house, Pemberly, is accurate. She thinks that Pemberly is neither gaudy nor uselessly fine, with less of splendor and more real elegant. The decoration style indicates Darcy’s values which are in the terms of self-cultivation and moral quality rather than materials. After this visiting she also has a better understanding about Darcy’s personality and quality. Through talking with housekeeper, she learns that Darcy,as a brother, a landlord and a master, is always thesweetest-tempered and generous-hearted person, who shows consideration for the poor and takes care of his sister very carefully. From this event we know that Elizabeth’s sensibility and intelligence rarely fail her in her reading of human minds, observing life and drawing out her correct first impression.2.4 RebellionIt can be imagined that Elizabeth with a certain amount of mental independence would own a strong mind and would refuse to submit to others’pressure and to be their appendage. She is a rebel of her time, longing for individual liberty and equality between sexes [12]87. Thus we are not surprised to find her firm refusal of Darcy’s first lordly proposal and total declination of Lady Catherine’s despotic demand of extract a promise from Elizabeth that she will not marry Darcy. The conversation between Lady Catherine and Elizabeth fully exposes Elizabeth’s rebellious spirit.“Let us sit down. You are to understand, Miss Bennet, that I came here with the determined resolution of carrying my purpose; nor will I be dissuaded from it. I have not been used tosubmit to any person’s whims. I have not been in the habit of brooking disappointment.”“That will make your ladyship’s situation at present more pitiable; but it will have no effect on me.”“I shall not go away till you have given me the assurance I require.”“And I certainly never shall give it. I am not to be intimidated into anything so wholly unreasonable…You have widely mistaken my character, if you think I can be worked on by such persuasions as these…but you have certainly no right to concern yourself in mine…”[7]305-307Bingely’s sisters pride themselves on having a good taste and are elegant in their manners and their appearance, but Elizabeth thinks they are a lack of inner integrity that are in fact nothing but “crows in the phoenix’s gaudy garments”[12]87. She makes good use of her cleverness and intellect to challenge the upper-class people who show contempt against her. She does not permit her ‘will’to be dictated to by another, and she will never admit the submissive role traditionally ascribed to women[13]50. Her excellent spiritual state makes her always in the position of a winner.Elizabeth’s attitude to marriage is independent and rebellious. Her view of marriage is much different from traditional woman in her time. As a traditional woman, Mrs. Bennet, her mother, blindly wants to find rich men as her daughters’husbands, while Elizabeth is not influenced by economic pressure. She is not rich, but never ready to exchange every better self-feeling with material profit. She will only accept the man’s proposal who she loves. What she wants is lifelong companion who has similar interest and taste to her. Her view of marriage is based on love, a kind of romantic love which seems very rebellious in that period of time.3. The causes of Elizabeth’s characterAs we all know that everything in the world has its own cause. The root of Elizabeth’s character also can be analyzed from the next two different perspectives. Social environmental influence was the external factor of Elizabeth’s character; while familysurrounding and view of marriage were the internal factors, which was the internal motive that Elizabeth boldly challenges the upper-class and pursues the ideal and happiness.3.1 The external factors3.1.1 Social environment factorEvery novelist must bear on mind the imprint of society in which he lives; since in the novel he gives the reader a picture of society he see it, and an implied criticism of it, the reader ought to be able to clearly see in his works the reflection of his ideology and society [14]49. During her lifetime, Austen lived through the French Revolution (1789), the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte; the American War of Independence (and the war with England of 1812); the incipient Industrial Revolution; the Feminist controversy of the turn of the eighteenth-century [11]49.All these events, especially the Industrial and French revolutions, brought about great changes in social structure and the ways people lived and thought. In addition, capitalistic utilitarianism and commercialism caused the declining of social morality. People dwell upon these figures with great relish, the income express rank, social aspirations andconsumer power and marriage becomes a transaction from which one want to get benefit [11]51. Personal relations were reduced to a question of pounds, shillings and pence; people’s behaviors were dominated by self-interest. It is manifestation that economic figures can be seen everywhere in Pride and Prejudice: Bingley inherits a hundred thousand pounds from his father, and has four or five thousand a year; Miss Bingley has a fortune of twenty thousand pounds; Darcy has ten thousand a year; Darcy’s sister Georgiana’s dowry is thirty thousand; Mr. Bennet has two thousand pounds a year; Mrs. Bennet’s father leaves her four thousand pounds. Therefore, compared with Darcy and Bingley, Elizabeth’s family is relatively poor and has lower social status. Elizabeth must have a sense of inferiority, so she has to show her good quality thereby hiding her family’s low status. Moreover, at that time, women had long been regarded as inferior to men physically and intellectually. Both law and theology had ordered their subjection [15]34. Women could not in their own name possess property, engage in business, or control the disposal of their children and even their own persons. In order to prove her idea that women are not inherently inferior to men in intelligence, Elizabeth makes herself intelligent andhas a sound judgment. She disagrees with deep-rooted social notions of the purpose of women’s marriage is predominantly for financial security and she claims that a woman’s marriage should be based on mutual love, mutual respect and mutual understanding.3.2 Internal factors3.2.1 Family factorElizabeth Bennet lives in a society of stationary characters in its conditions and outlook. Generations are born and die and are succeed by their descendents, living in the same places and doing the same things. There is so little change of ideas; democracy has not yet raised her horrid head; money is a potential problem; courtship has its own dramas [12]86. People around her are almost all foolish, passive and reposeful, though there are a few exceptions. Her father, Mr. Bennet is a country gentleman in whom irony is the most prominent quality and who by appreciation of character makes some amends for the selfish indifference, which is the ground of his character [12]86. With no doubt, Elizabeth inherits her father’s taste and intellect, as well as a strong criticaljudgment. But there is as much likeness between mother and daughter as may exist between a lively and sensible woman and a lively fool. “Mrs. Bennet is a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper.”[7]3 Her feelings, impulsiveness, judgments and speeches are generally wrong, while Elizabeth’s are generally right. To some extent, her character is greatly affected by her father not by her mother.Negative family background partly influences Elizabeth’s character. With ignorant mother, incompetent father as well as reckless and self-willed sisters, Elizabeth is often looked up down by others [16]211. With time going, she wants to be a clever girl and ask others to pay much more attention to her intellect and her unique talent, thereby alleviating surrounding people’s contempt. As a consequence, her wisdom and intellect are appraised by others.3.2.2 Marriage factorElizabeth’s character is influenced by marriage factor. Through comparing her mother’s and her friend Charlotte’s view of marriage, we can see Elizabeth’s unique attitude to marriage.Mrs. Bennet is at all costs with her blind desperation for marriage [5]34. At the beginning of the novel, when she declares of the new tenant of Netherfield, she says “A single man of large fortune, four or five thousand a year, what a fine thing for our girls”[7]2. This shows Mrs. Bennet expects her daughter marriage well as her only desire in the life and one of Elizabeth’s friend Charlotte views marriage as a “comfortable home”. “At the age of twenty seven, without having ever been handsome, felt all the good luck of it. [7]107”She accepts Collins solely from the pure and disinterested desire of an establishment. While Elizabeth takes a different view to marriage, so she feels ashamed that a friend of hers can fall so far below her own ideals of conduct. She thinks Charlotte as Collin’s wife is “a most humiliating picture”.Elizabeth’s attitude towards love and marriage has progressive social significance. She likes a free choice, not dictated by economic pressure, though there is indeed not the least hint in the book which suggests that she would like to go so far as to totally reject money for love’s sake [12]88. She is not rich, but never ready to sacrifice every better self-feeling to material profit. She rejects to give Mr. Collins her hand because she knows they share not the same ideas and taste. She stands for moral integrity in love affairs. In her eyes, the life long companyshould be the first precondition. She accepts Darcy’s propose because she loves him. She thinks that “he was the exact man whose disposition and talents would most suit her”and “it is a union that must have been to the advantage of both”[12]88. Therefore, Elizabeth’s idea of happiness in marriage has to do with individual compatibility and affection, what Charlotte presumably means by “romantic”. This point of view is really superior to the traditional view at that time.4. Influence of Austen’s feminism“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”[7]1 This is opening sentence of Pride and Prejudice. From the first sentence, we can know women’s dreadful situation that is to say women have no economic status. Ellen Moers pointed out that Austen wrote at a time when both men and women found themselves in “a Feminist Controversy”[17]245. Jane Austen shows the strong protest against secular prejudice towards the notion of family status and the system of marriage imposed onthe English middle and lower class women between the end of 18th century and the beginning of 19th century [5]33. So from this point, we can see that Austen’s novels all end with an improved feudal society, whose leader is an open-minded gentleman who permits some changes and understands women’s worth and treat them as individuals. At last, the gentleman marries the heroine and secures her of a better life and promising future, and the ideal union of individual desire and social limitations are realized in the heroines’marriages.Austen expresses her view of women in Pride and Prejudice, which is appallingly similar to her radical contemporaries. Through describing Elizabeth’s fine aspiration about asking for the independence of personality and struggling for the equality of human rights, we can see the idea of Jane Austen about woman rights. Elizabeth is anything but merely subservient to the male and represents in some sense the feminist ideal of woman [5]33. Moreover, the figure of Elizabeth reflects not only Austen’s faith in female mind but her belief that intellectual abilities are as desirable in the woman as in the man. Elizabeth herself is intelligent and has a sound judgment, and she does not distinguish people around her according to their gender but according to their intelligence. Jane Bennet and Miss Bingleyboth have qualities which were regarded as marks of feminine excellence in an age which advised women to conceal any mental accomplishments [11]43. Yet neither is judged the equal of Elizabeth Bennet because they lack her “quickness of observation”and “judgment”. This standard of excellence is made by Darcy, who comments that while a woman should cultivate accomplishments such as “music, singing, drawing, dancing, all the modern languages…and to all this she must yet add something more substantial, in the improvement of her mind by extensive reading”[7]32. So Elizabeth is the spokesman of Jane Austen.5. ConclusionJane Austen is a milestone as well as a very important writer in the history of British literature. In her era, British novels seemed to come to a stop, and family reading activity became more and more boring [18]5. She invented her own special mode of fiction, the domestic comedy of middle-class manners, and a dramatic, realistic account of the quiet backwaters of everyday life for thecountry families of Regency England from the late 1790s until 1815 [2]1. All these help her to have the equal name as Sir Walter Scott.Elizabeth, the heroine of Pride and Prejudice, touches the readers all the time everywhere in the world. Elizabeth, who fought for the happy marriage, is an excellent actress, playing an active role on the stage of life. The above study mainly discuses Elizabeth’s four characters, including reason, self-esteem, intelligence and resistance. Generally speaking, Elizabeth is lively, bright, sparkling as well as full of emotion and energy, which make her eyes glow, her words flash, bring the blood to her cheeks so often. [12]1 Then, this paper studies deep causes of Elizabeth’s which are affected by internal factors and external factors as well as the influence of Austen’s feminism. The purpose of this paper is to add luster to getting a better understanding of Elizabeth, then through analyzing her personality and causes, we can understand Austen’s complexity and her opinion of women’s attitude towards self-pursuit, love and marriage.。

Pride_and_Prejudice傲慢与偏见简介英国文学
Austen is particularly preoccupied with the relationship between men and women in love. Stories of love and marriage provide the major themes in all her novels. (marry for material wealth and social position; marry for beauty and passion; marry for true love)
Walter Scott praised her: “That young lady has a talent for describing the involvements and feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I ever met with. The big-wow strain I can do myself, like any now going; but the exquisite touch which renders ordinary commonplace things and characters interesting from the truth of the description and the sentiment, is denied to me. What a pity such a gifted creature died so early!”
Austen’s literary concern
As a novelist Jane Austen writes within a very narrow sphere.

An Analysis of Feminism in Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice is the representative work of feminist literature, the writer Jane Austen successfully shaped a feminist pioneer, Elizabeth. Her pursuit of independence and equality, going against feudal ethics, her disregarding of social conventions, the pursuit of freedom and equality of marriage, all of these are embodiment of strong feminism. But having a close look at it, the feminist expressed by author is not comprehensive, which makes it unconsciously fall into the trap of patriarchalism again. For example the concept of quality and class consciousness in the works is not clear; the unfolding of the story can only be based on “the same class”. And rebellious spirit of the novel is not thorough, and the pursuit of perfect marriage settings etc. are because the author is influenced by the patriarchalism, Nowadays feminist literary is greatly influenced by the patriarchalism, and the study of Pride and Prejudice from the perspective of feminist can provide experience for female writing.Key Words: Pride and Prejudice; feminism; marriageContents摘要........................................................................................................................... IntroductionPride and Prejudice is a typical masterpiece of realism in the 18th century, which reflects the feminist thought and has attracted the attention of the readers. So many scholars have conducted extensive researches on it. The academic study of pride and prejudice from the perspective of feminism, with feminist criticism method, reflects the women in all aspects of independent thinking, but there are few articles mentioned the existing limitations of feminism in the novel. In the fiction, the author by creating new women image — Elizabeth, expressed dissatisfaction with the present situation of women at that time, showed advanced feminist awareness of the mainstream in the patriarchal society. Influenced by the society at that time, the awareness of male authority has been deeply embedded into the author‟s ideology, which also appears in the novel, and is common in today‟s feminist work.2. The Embodiment of Feminism in the NovelThe 19th century is the bud of feminism; in the meantime, “the UK has produced a large number of ideological deep, passionate, radical political writers. Their education and grow through writing to explore women, marriage, family, economy and other issues, both showed a sharp feminist thought.”(Chen, 2001:25) Therefore, Jane Austen has also been influenced by the trend. In the novel Pride and Prejudice, one of the most representative characters is Elizabeth with a rebellious spirit, who was different from other characters in the novel. Elizabeth is independent, with a strong self-esteem, dares to challenge the political correctness, to pursue their happy marriage of new women, and she is one of the most representative characteristics of feminism. In this work, the author presents the phenomenon of gender discrimination in British society, reveals the social restrictions on women and shows the advanced female consciousness from a special female perspective. The following contents will analyze the feminism of Pride and Prejudice from the pursuit of independent personality and equal right, the revolt against the feudal moral and the pursuit of freedom and equality of marriage.2.1 The Pursuit of Independence and Equal RightsIn Britain at that time, due to economic independence, women have been in a state of being dominant, thus become subservient to the men. “Women only in male pocket, men are dominated in family and society, and the center. In both physically and intellectually women are supposed to be the weak of the society, women do not enjoy equal rights with men”.(Wang, 2004:17) But Jane Austen is strongly opposed to the roles of social consciousness, said that men and women should have the same rights, stupid, vulnerability is not only the exclusive terms of women. If women receive the same formal education as men, women can be as smart, rational as men.The so-called independent personality refers to p erson‟s independence, autonomy, creativity, which requires people not to depend on any external authority, and not attached to any real political power. In Pride and Prejudice, the writer shaped a beautiful, witty, bold and lively character—Elizabeth, who is different from the other women in the novel, she is sanity and reasonable new woman, who has her own judgment and independent consciousness and has her own original ideas. At the time of the society under the rule of patriarchy, Elizabeth is a very attractive woman. For the choice of marriage, she doesn‟t want to be limited by the lives of their parents and their arrangement. When the heir to the property of his father Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth, though mother pressures to Elizabeth again and again, Elizabeth finally flatly refused. She doesn‟t want to be tied down by a secular marriage, refused to accept a marriage without love. However, when the hero Darcy proposes to Elizabeth, Elizabeth was angered by the arrogance of Darcy and straightforwardly refused Darcy‟s proposal. This behavior was very incredible at that time. Because of D arcy‟s property or social status is the most of women‟s dream at that time. But Elizabeth wants a marriage which is based on mutual admiration, mutual respect, rather than a class business marriage.Female subordination was very common in the 18th century of England, but in Pride and Prejudice the heroine Elizabeth had been striving for equal status between men and women. In the novel, Elizabeth is not inferior to men, so that the arrogant Darcy eventually abandons his arrogance and marries Elizabeth. At the same time,Elizabeth‟s performance is more rational, decisive than hesitant Mr. Bingley. Among them, the author also specially shaped love flattery, curry favor with powerful, silly Mr. Collins and simple, moody Mrs. Bennett to prove words like intelligent, reasonable etc. are not only synonymous with men. Both women and men have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, women should enjoy the same rights with men.2.2 The Opposition to Feudal Moral18th-century in Britain is covered by the patriarchal culture. Women don‟t have equal education rights, and their role in life was decided by men. The focus of the female life is housework and taking care of children, and be “the angel in the home”, which makes women gradually withdrew from the social stage. But Elizabeth is a typical rebellious character, who wouldn‟t be limited by the feudal creed and does not recognize the fact that woman has no talent and unwilling to become the victim of political correctness. As a result, the protagonist Elizabeth against ethical code can be divided into the following two aspects:One aspect is that the women‟s acceptance in education. At that time in Britain, men and women do not have the same education rights due to the influence of patriarchalism. The natural obligation of woman is attached to the man; take care of family and child. The wisdom of the woman should not be showed in knowledge or degree, but in singing, playing the piano, painting, doing housework, etc. In Pride and Prejudice, says Mr. Bingley, as long as women can decorate stage desk, adorn screen, woven bag, etc., can be defined as talented women. It is not hard to see, at the time of the society, women‟s“innocence”has achieved a tacit attitude in the men‟s minds, and became a kind of social identity. They don‟t want woman to accept normal education, also just put their training to their education to meet the requirements of the male ideal. But the heroine Elizabeth does not agree with it, and even showed a kind of defiance. Influenced by Mr. Benet, she loves reading. When the sisters are discussing a variety of men, she likes to stay in a quiet place alone with a book. In the novel Pride and Prejudice the opening scenes is Elizabeth holding a book in the home, while the other girl is not in play combat, but practicing the piano. Thus verifies whatMr. Bennett said, “They have none of them much to recommended them. They are all silly and ignorant like other girls; but Lizzy has something more of quickness than her sisters”(Austen, 1993). When Elizabeth visits Lady Catherine, Lady Catherine asks Elizabeth about the girl family education, Elizabeth answers honestly. Actually, she can play piano, but she says she only knows a little. In Elizabeth‟s view, this is just a worldly game. The other aspect is in manners. “Self-control, lives in seclusion, roll with the punches, virtuous, at the time of the British is considered to be under patriarchy women shall abide by the code of ethics, also can saying is women should have a fair maiden quality”.(Liu, 2009(03):4) But the heroine Elizabeth is against “women‟s”for many times, such as the opposition regardless of her family at that time, walking in the rain to visit her sick sister, although very mess, even being laughed at by Miss Bingley; She doesn‟t attach herself to people in power, such as she repulse Mr. Darcy‟s offer of marriage, though he is rich; She is not makes up to dignitaries as their agents, when she is in Mrs. Catherine‟s home, everybody curries favor with lady Catherine, but Elizabeth sits there quietly. For Mrs. Catherine‟s ironic question, Elizabeth also refuted, face to face without hesitation to maintain the dignity of the family.Due to the time that the women do not have family property inheritance, so Mrs. Bennett is eager to let five daughters marry, and under the condition of the oldest daughter is not married, the rest of the four daughters have been went out for social intercourse at the same time. In the 18th century England, this kind of behavior is a very unreasonable, but Elizabeth‟s is not agree with it. So when Catherine asked Mrs. Elizabeth‟s younger sister, Elizabeth was not afraid to tell Mrs. Catherine her sisters are already out communication, Mrs. Catherine said something pretty incredible, but Elizabeth said, “If only because the elder sister can‟t marry early, or don‟t want to marry early, can‟t do sister out social and entertainment, it is too bitter. The smallest and the largest also have the right to digest the youth. I don‟t think it can do that promote sisterly true feelings, also can‟t form a gentle character.”(Austen, 1993) Elizabeth‟s clever; irony answer expressed her opposition to Mrs. Catherine‟sdecadent ideas, and dissatisfaction with the feudal ethical code and contempt.2.3 The Pursuit of Freedom and Equality of MarriageIn the beginning of Pride and Prejudice, “all bachelors with property must need to marry a wife, and it has become a universally acknowledged truth.”In Jane Austen‟s times, women‟s marriage is not based on “lov e”,but based on the “economy”. This kind of marriage with utilitarian color is opposed by the author, and then the author, shaping the heroine Elizabeth, conveys her calls for opposition with secular opinions about love.In the novel Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth‟s marriage is built on love, on the basis of mutual respect for each other. So when she hears that Charlotte will marry to Collins, she feels very sad. She doesn‟t believe this utilitarian marriage can bring happiness to her friend. At the same time, on impulse, her sister Lydia elopes with Wickham; Elizabeth hated this kind of behavior, too. In her view, only the marriage based on love can be happy forever. In the novel, we can see money, status and power are playing a decisive role among female marriage. This marriage, apparently does not involve feelings, is pure economic problem. Social elites are valued not for their moral character and behavior, social role, but for their money, farms, houses, furniture, carriage, garden and so on. Darcy‟s cousin, colonel William is an earl‟s younger son, who can‟t inherit property and the title. He said frankly to Elizabeth, profligate spending, money has become the important factor in his marriage. Regardless of the mother‟s objection, Elizabeth resolutely rejected her family heir Mr. Collins‟s proposal. She is not willing to accept the settling of marriage. Because of Mr. Darcy arrogance, Elizabeth chose to refuse Mr. Darcy‟s proposal.By shaping the character of Elizabeth, the author suggests that marriage should not be dominate and influenced by others. Women should adopt a positive attitude to the secular marriage challenges, and dare to break through the connective with secular opinions about love, brave to pursue their own happiness, get rid of the marriage built on money, status, realize the equality between men and women in marriage.3. The Limitation of Feminism in the NovelIn the novel Pride and Prejudice, the representative figure --Elizabeth, although is constantly with feudal political correctness, her happiness eventually established on the basis of marrying a rich man, which clearly shows that the author compromise on the society. “Since childhood grew up in the living environment and the influence of parents, Jane Austen‟s novel material always locate in the English countryside and neighborhood middle class life, she described the characters in the novel life are very familiar with”. (Yu, 1997:296) Social reality makes Jean Austen can‟t walk out of the country life, and her view is not very open, and real life didn‟t give the author an open space. So some critics considered works of Jean Austen material single, conservative, and they also think that some of her work too feminine. In the fiction, it is not hard to see that the traditional patriarchalism or can control w omen‟s lives, females have to succumb to the male oppression. “In politics, economy, society and life and so on many aspects still have no voice.”(Lin, 2004:15), In short, the novel to a certain extent, reflects that Austin is influenced by conservative patriarchal ideology, the feminism she wants to express still has some limitations, which includes the following aspects: 3.1 Unclear Concept of EqualityFrom the novel Pride and Prejudice, the author‟s sensitive class consciousness can be seen, and her characters also have a distinct class sense of hierarchy. Although in the novel, the author did not describe the intense class conflict, the author‟s class consciousness can be expressed through her negative attitude for marry into a proper family and mercenary marriage. The characters in Pride and Prejudice basically belong to three classes: at the top is Darcy and his aunt who is a duchess with power, they represent the noble class; In the middle class is Mr. Bingley, he represents the emerging upstarts, known as the “new”; and at the bottom of the class is Mr. Bennett, representing the ordinary gentleman. The combination of Elizabeth and Darcy represents the noble class with ordinary gentleman “marriage”.Despite the striking reality in every social class in the eyes of Jane Austen, by shaping the characters of Elizabeth and Darcy, the author has tried to jump the class nature of social disorder, which contributed to the combination of “pride”and “prejudice”, strived to achieve the equality between men and women. But in the novel the author advocates the equality of men and women status, as well as on the social class relations not real beyond the equality of the bourgeois class.First of all, in pursuit of equality between men and women, the protagonist Elizabeth and Darcy in both property and social status have certain disparity. The hero Darcy in the nobility of the society, have the hereditary property, the farms, with revenues of ten thousand pounds a year. And the heroine Elizabeth is just an ordinary ge ntleman‟s daughter locating at the bottom of the society, who gets only “4 per mile of one thousand pound”from her mother. However, Darcy doesn‟t care the gap between him and Elizabeth, and marries to the lower gentleman‟s daughter. Compared with Darcy, on the contrary, Lady Catherine is thrusting, and does not forget the rank order. When she learns that her nephew proposes to the lower gentleman‟s daughter Elizabeth, she goes to Elizabeth‟s home, looks down on Elizabeth and her class origin, and points out that the class differences between her and Darcy. But Elizabeth‟s says, “He is a gentleman, I am a gentleman‟s daughter, at this point we are equal.”(Austen, 1993) Clearly, in the novels of Jane Austen, although the author has been striving for equal social status between men and women, the author just said they are “basi cally”belonging to the same class. Elizabeth and D arcy‟s equality establish in the same class under the background of the implementation of equal, namely with the gentlemen class, and this is the reason why Elizabeth can stand erect before Darcy and Lady Catherine these noble. Thus it can be seen that the author‟s advocating of equality of men and women‟s status is not thorough enough, the author has not really pursued this equality in the various social aspects, just looking for compromise and retrogression.Secondly, performance in aligning with upper class; there are three levels in the novel: the noble class, the “nouveau riche”class, the gentleman class. Mr. Darcy, aristocratic class in society, the first time he comes out, and people are widely rumored that he has an income of ten thousand pounds a year, the male guest praised his wisdom, and the female guests praised his good looks. In the whole party, all people looked at him with love almost half a night. Finally they discovered he isarrogant, looks down on people, so everyone begins to dislike him. Although everyone has the negative emotions about Darcy, he has the authority that no one dares to challenge. On behalf of the newly rich Bingley trust the representative of the aristocracy Darcy, even his marriage happiness is controlled by Darcy. Darcy‟s cousin Fitzwilliam and Darcy‟s sister Georgiana also obey the arrangement of Darcy. Among them, when Elizabeth asks Colonel Fitzwilliam when to leave, his answer is listening to Darcy. All of them reflect Darcy‟s authority. Elizabeth refuses to Darcy because of his arrogance, but when she finds herself has been deep in love with Darcy, says: “He is proud, not like the pride of the ordinary people. Such a good youth, good family, and have money, everything is better than somebody else, it is no wonder that he pride. As I said, he had the right to pride.”(Austen, 1993) Darcy and the heroine finally married. And Elizabeth‟s elder sister Jean marry to Mr. Bingley, who representative the “new class”. From here, it is easy to see that Elizabeth, Jane on behalf of ordinary gentleman class is gradually close to the noble class. Jane Austen still doesn‟t get rid of the limitation of noble ideas, is still affected by the traditional consciousness of noble.3.2 Incomplete Rebellious SpiritIn Pride and Prejudice, the heroine Elizabeth is an independent personality that dares to break through the representative of the secular bondage, and braves to pursuit of happy marriage. For example, when she hears that Jane was ill, walking in the rain to Netherfield to visit sick sister despite of her family‟s opposition; when Darcy expresses love to Elizabeth for the first time, she decisively rejected, refused to accept the charity of marriage and so on. Through those things, it is not hard to see Elizabeth‟s contempt and discontent for feudal political. And she is a typical representative of rebellious spirit who not willing to marry based on money and social status. However, Elizabeth‟s defiance is not thorough. First of all, it performs at women depend on men on economy. In the 19th-century of Britain, women with no economic foundation has been under the oppression of patriarchy society. “Economic foundation determines superstructure”, which directly tell people that economicindependence is unavailable to status in the society. Similarly, in pride and prejudice, because of women‟s economic independence, women have to rely on his father as well as the future husband, which makes them lose the right of speech at home and in marriage life, so that ultimately Elizabeth did not escape the arrangement of social reality because of her economic dependence, and married Darcy who comes from wealthy family. During this period, because women have no real property inheritance, women still depend on men. Women‟s status is obviously low. In Pride and Prejudice, the role of Elizabeth defined by the author did not consider going out to find a career to get economic independence, to change her present situation, but just stay at home. Facing that the closest relatives of blood relationship inherit the property, she has never questioned, but slowly accepted it. In this case, for the hard choices of the unknown future life, the heroine could only marry a man who has financial security and respected status in society. Obviously, Elizabeth does not get rid of the control of man on economy and the subordinate status to get real independence. Our protagonist Elizabeth from beginning to end are not out of her own home, which shows that at last the author did not establish the independent female consciousness.Second, the performances of the women have been in a passive waiting for status. In Britain at that time, women are in a disadvantageous position both in class and gender. In the novel, the only way of social activity for women is dance. Mrs. Bennett has been urged their daughters to take part in all kinds of ball in order to be able to let his daughter have a good home to return to, and the protagonist Elizabeth also went to the PROM consciously for the same purpose. Elizabeth is snubbed by Darcy at a party and in the following Darcy‟s first proposal is vehemently refused. In the novel, Elizabeth is hostile to Darcy intentionally, though she had another kind of feeling from the beginning, she dare not to admit this kind of feeling. “When Darcy proposed to her for the first time, she was actually pleasantly and surprised, but she performance was angry, and these angry though Jane and Wickham as an excuse, but true on Darcy, Elizabeth at both hate and love the contradiction in the mood.”(Pan, 2004:256) Next after Darcy has made a series of changes, and corrected the too much arrogance attitude, Elizabeth begins to regret her former attitude. But she doesn‟t fightfor her own happiness, just waiting for Darcy‟s proposal again. Visible, in contact with Darcy, the hero Elizabeth has been in a passive position. During this period, Elizabeth is familiar with Wickham, and attracted by his gentility, but she doesn‟t express her love, too. Her sister Jane also is in a passive position. When Jane meets Mr. Bingley at a party, she is deeply attracted by Mr. Bingley, but due to the so-called “lady” character, Jane does not dare to express her thoughts too much, so that almost missing her love. Thus it can be seen that women in the novel all follow the custom of the typical patriarchal society, quietly waiting for the pursuit of men. “Visible, in the author‟s mind, patriarchal ideology, women are not fundamentally getting rid of the economic dependency on men, failed to get rid of by men subordinate position of choice”. (Chen, 2012, (04):4)3.3 The Pursuit of Perfect MarriageIn Pride and Prejudice, the center of the novel is marriage. So the book is talking about the marriage and money, marriage and position and marriage and love. In Pride and Prejudice, because of the relationship between money and marriage that makes the young men‟s course of love is full of frustration. But because of the happy endings in Pride and Prejudice, it is unavoidable for people to ask, “Does this kind of perfect marriage really exists in British at that time? The bondage of marriage really can span class differences?”In the novel, Mrs. Be net‟s life is to marry his daughter, for the daughters to seek a better husband. In this regard, Be net‟s five daughters have their own strongpoint: gentle Jean, smart and lively Elizabeth, wooden Mary and flirtatious Lydia. The author is like a god who assigns the ideal husband to her favorite characters as a reward, but for those little girls in improper behavior has an unhappy marriage or lives alone. For example, the eldest daughter Jane who is kind, meet and gentle, is a representative of the fair maiden. She has strong self-control but lack of self judgment, and beauty and character is her superiority, and obtaining B ingley‟s love is the reward for her. The second daughter, Elizabeth, is the author‟s favorite role. She is the only one who has a clear understanding for their own family and the weakness of this class, and her beauty, independent self-esteem, lively to win the love of Darcy. She got abigger reward - become the capable mistress of Pemberley manor. And beautiful and frivolous Lydia is completely not disciplined, who lacks of education and there is no shame in her mind. She is controlled by lust and flirting with officers unscrupulously. Finally she marries to Wickman who is humble and extravagant. And third daughter Mary who is wooden, average intelligence want to prove her talent everywhere, until at the end of this novel she is unable to find their own “Mr. R ight”. Above all, in A usten‟s novels, as long as women own the wisdom, manner, independence can across the social barriers and get together with there beloved. Hero‟s ingenuity seems to be a kind of tool that helps them to find their fare, and does not have effects on other ways.In general, because of the living environment makes Jane Austen can‟t walk out of the country, and her social activity confined to the gentle class and within the church. “Excluded from certain kinds of life experiences, so her …three or four families of rural village‟, is not so much her artistic talent, she consciously in art and helpless choice, she just lucky noted down her era” (Lefroy, 2002:90).4. ConclusionJane Austen‟s feminist consciousness has been clearly analyzed in her masterpiece Pride and Prejudice. Austen uses woman‟s unique observation to describe a small word around her, especially among the ladies marriages and love affairs. The heroine, Elizabeth is full of wisdom and independent of thinking that embodies feminist consciousness. But the feminist expressed by author is not comprehensive, which makes it unconsciously fall into the trap of patriarchalism again. For example the concept of quality and class consciousness in the works is not clear. And rebellious spirit of the novel is not thorough, and the pursuit of perfect marriage settings and so on are because the author is influenced by the patriarchalism, Nowadays feminist literary is greatly influenced by the patriarchalism, and the study of Pride and Prejudice from the perspective of feminist can provide experience for female writing.Bibliography[1] Duckworth,Alistair. The Improvement of the Estate:A S tudy of Jane Austen’sNovels.

Many scholars at home and abroad have analyzed this novel from various perspectives. However, few researchers make an attempt to explore hero Darcy’s personalities on the basis of Attitude system. Therefore, the present research will employ three sub-systems of the attitudinal resources-affect, judgment and appreciation to make a tentative analysis of hero Darcy’s personalities. The Appraisal theoryis the development and complement of the interpersonal meaning in Halliday’s Systemic-Functional Linguistics. The Attitude system, which is one of the three sub-systemsof the Appraisal theory, is put forward by J.R. Martin in the 1990s. Attitude is concerned withour feelings, including emotional reactions, judgments of behaviour and evaluation of things (Martin, 2005). It is sub-divided into three regions of feeling-affect, judgment and appreciation, which covers what is traditionally referred as emotion, ethics and aesthetics. Many scholars have done many researches based on Appraisal theory at home and abroad. Susan Hood (2004) made Appraisal theory –based analysis of academic discourse. Wang Zhenhua (2004) employed Attitude system to carry out the analysis of hard news. Li Rongjuan (2005) applied Appraisal theory to explore attitudinal meanings of English political column texts. Shan Huifang and Ding Suping (2006) did researches on famous fairytale-The Ugly Duckling from the perspective of Appraisal theory. However, there is not yet sufficient study on Attitude system-based analysis of characters’personalities. The present researchwill conduct a detailed analysis of how hero Darcy’s personalities are portrayed through the use of various attitudinal resources in the novel within the framework of affect, judgment and appreciation under Attitude system. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the attitudinal resources will be made to depict hero Darcy’s personalities.Darcy’s personalities have been summed up from two aspects. On the one hand, although Darcy is a well-educated gentleman,he is proud, arrogant, conceited, self-esteemed, haughty and fastidious. On the other hand, though Darcy seems to be proud in appearance, he is kind by nature. He is liberal, generous, candid, honest, kind-hearted, amiable and friendly. Data analysis reveals the following findings.(1)Abundant and various attitudinal resources (168) are applied in this novel. And they interact with each other so as to depict the different aspects of hero Darcy’s personalities such as proud, arrogant or kind-hearted.(2)Within the Attitude system, the judgment resources occupy the highest frequency (69.1%), which shows that Jane Austen manages to find out hero Darcy’s personalities through keen and close observation and judgment of his behaviors and manners, the affect resources the second (29.8%), and the appreciation resources the lowest (1.1%). Moreover, Jane Austen displays the tendency to employ the negative attitudinal resources to create the negative image of hero Darcy. Among all the attitudinal resources (168), 127 fall into the category of the negative ones, taking up a percentage of 75.6%.(3)Jane Austen prefers to use nominalization to confirm and reconfirm that the negative sides of hero Darcy’s personalities, which indirectly reflects her personal attitudes towards Darcy. In addition, Jane Austen is inclined to employ emotional adjectives, affective verbs as well as repetition to portray hero Darcy’s personalities. The research not only provides a new perspective to appreciate the linguistic features as well as the characters’personalities, but also supplies some important implications for the teaching of the literal works in the future.【Key Words】: Pride and Prejudice; attitudinal meaning; affect; judgment; appreciation; personalities【Type of Thesis】: Application。

Pride And Prejudice

Pride And Prejudice
