本文介绍了格拉斯顿伯里音乐节。
其中包括节日活动的具体内容、售票情况及活动组织的细节等。
2. Every summer, many music festivals take place across the UK. From Leeds Festival in the north to Bestival on the Isle of Wight (the small island just off the south coast of Britain),festivals are everywhere. There are festivals for children, for literature enthusiasts and for young adults. Despite the huge amount of choice, one festival remains “the one” to go to: Glastonbury.
Glastonbury is a hugely popular festival, located in the countryside near Bristol. Formally known as Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, it is a five-day event featuring numerous singers and performers. The festival takes place over the last weekend in June. Every five years there is a “fallow year” — this means the festival does not take place, allowing the land to recover.
Tickets, which cost £225 each, are released in the autumn prior to the festival. Many people want to obtain tickets and they usually sell out very quickly. Tickets for the 2019 festival sold out in just 26 minutes! For those who missed out, there will be a resale in April. This year, I will be stewarding at Glastonbury for Oxfam. It’s a great way to see the festival, support a good cause and see how a festival is run.
The organisers don’t release the full line-up until after the tickets have been sold. This means people buy tickets without knowing which performers will be there. The festival has a good reputation so most people don’t mind the suspense (悬念). So far, only two headliners have been announced: Foo Fighters and Kanye West. When Glastonbury announced that Kanye West would be one of the headliners lots of people were frustrated. One person even set up a petition (请愿书) asking the organisers of the festival to cancel Kanye’s performance!

作者主要介绍了新技术给生活带来的利弊,并表明自己始终站在变革的积极一面,接受它,而不是抵制它。
3. SHOULD WE FIGHT NEW TECHNOLOGY?
This morning, I saw the shocking headline:“Passenger Dies When Car Crashes in Driverless Mode”.In the article, various people said that the public should oppose the idea of developing driverless cars. They said that some advances in technology were unnecessary and could even be dangerous. Hence,we should cease accepting technology just because it is new. The newspaper reported that the car company had already apologised for the accident, but the families of the deceased said it was not enough. Nevertheless, the company still claimed that most people would be travelling in driverless cars one day soon.
On the one hand, there are many different groups of people around the world who live happily in the absence of new technology. Probably the most wellknown are the Amish, a group of Christians living in rural America. They do not own or drive cars, watch TV, or use the Internet. They have lived mainly as farmers since the 18th century, and they will probably be living the same way in the distant future. They advocate a simple life with an emphasis on hard work, family, and community. They think that is better than caring about luxuries or following the lives of the rich and famous. It could even be argued that the Amish's quality of life is better since they live in and appreciate the natural environment rather than living in large, polluted cities.
On the other hand, new technology has provided people everywhere with many benefits over the years. For example, the latest weathertracking computer programmes give people lots of warnings about potential natural disasters, which saves many lives. Moreover, the Internet has made it possible for friends and family to keep in touch easily even if they are on opposite sides of the world. It has also made finding opportunities in life much easier, as it allows people to make larger networks of friends through using social media.
Personally,I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances. I found my career as an AI designer through a social media network. My health monitor, which I wear all the time, has also helped me get into the best shape of my life. Of course, when new technology changes the way we live, it can be a scary prospect. Nevertheless,I will always look on the positive side of change and accept it rather than resist it.
1. Why did many people oppose driverless cars?
A.Because they think new technology is unnecessary.
B.Because they think driverless mode is dangerous.
C.Because they are the families of the deceased.
D.Because the company didn't apologise for the accident.
2. What can we learn about the Amish?
A.They live happily in the absence of new technology.
B.They would like to live in large and polluted cities.
C.They are proud of owning cars and using the Internet.
D.They want to follow the lives of the rich and famous.
3. What can we infer about the author from the passage?
A.He feels sorry for the accident.
B.He is opposed to new technology.
C.He cares nothing about new technology.
D.He is in favour of new technology.
4. How does the author support the ideas?
A.By using examples.
B.By doing experiments.
C.By using exact figures.
D.By conducting surveys.
4. We all know donating blood provides a vital lifeline to those in need, but a growing body of research suggests that it could have health benefits for the donor too.
Findings have shown that donating blood reduces the risk of heart attacks and even cancer.
It even bums quite a bit of energy — 650 calories (卡路里) for every pint (568 mL) given.
The news could come as a promotion (宣传) of British blood banks which use an average of 7,000 units of blood every day.
It is thought that the benefits arise from lowering high iron levels.
Iron affects how thick and sticky the blood is. High iron levels cause the blood to be thicker.
Raised iron levels also keep blood from flowing smoothly.
Because donating blood removes some of its iron, it may therefore have a protective benefit if done on a consistent basis by helping thin the blood.
According to a study from the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that those aged 43 to 61 had fewer heart attacks when they donated blood every six months.
A study of 2,682 men from Finland found they had an 88 percent reduced risk of heart attacks than those who didn’t donate, reported Medical Daily.
Likewise, a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute also links iron to an increased cancer risk.
The four-and-a-half-year study involving 1,200 people found those who made blood donations twice a year had a lower risk of cancer and death than those who didn’t. However, these benefits depend on making donations on a regular basis, rather than once in a while.
Another side effect of donating blood is that it can bum a large number of calories too.
The University of California in San Diego says that for every one pint of blood donated, 650 calories are burned as the body must fill itself up.
Although this seems to be an attractive effort-free way to lose weight, the NHS Blood and Transplant centre still encourages people to donate for the benefit of others first, rather than for themselves.
1. How can giving blood prevent heart disease?
A.By keeping blood from flowing fast. B.By increasing blood’s thickness. C.By reducing iron in the blood. D.By helping iron work better.
2. What is the healthiest way to donate blood?
A.Give blood regularly. B.Give blood every six months.
C.Make donations in middle age D.Donate a small amount each time.
3. The author mentions the three studies to _________.
A.prove the serious harm of cancer B.solve the problems of giving blood C.explain the reasons for heart disease D.show the benefits of blood donations 4. According to the NHS Blood and Transplant centre, donating blood _________. A.is an attractive way to lose weight B.should be based on selflessness C.involves some degree of risk D.may burn too many calories
