第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)Have you ever pressed the pedestrian button at a crosswalk and wondered if it really worked? They’re called “placebo(安慰剂)buttons”一buttons that mechanically sound and can be pushed, but provide no functionality.
In New York City, only about 2 of the 1, 000 crosswalk buttons actually function. Crosswalk signals were generally installed before traffic jam had reached today’s levels.
But while their function was taken over by more advanced systems—such as automated lights or traffic sensors —the physical buttons were often kept, rather than being replaced at further expense. Other cities, such as Boston,Dallas and Seattle, have gone through a similar process, leaving them with their own placebo pedestrian buttons. In London, which has 6, 000 traffic signals, pressing the pedestrian button results in a reliable “Wait” light. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the “green man”—or “pedestrian stage” in traffic signal design profession — will appear any sooner.
“We do h ave some crossings where the green light comes on automatically, but we still ask people to press the button because that enables accessible features,’’ said Glynn Barton, director of network management at Transport for London.
These features, such as blind tracks and hearable traffic signals, help people with visual disorder cross the road and only function when the button is pressed. As for the lights, a growing number of them are now combined and become a part of an electronic system that detects traffic and adjusts time frequency accordingly (giving priority to buses if they’re running late, for example), which means that pressing the button has no effect.
According to Langer, a Harvard psychologist, placebo buttons give us the illusion (错觉)of control — and something to do in situations where the alternative would be doing nothing. In the case of pedestrian crossings, they may even make us safer by forcing us to pay attention to our surroundings. “They serve a psychological purpose at the very least,” she added.
1、Why are the physical buttons still kept in some cities?
A.Because it may cost money to replace them.
B.Because they remain as memories of a city.
C.Because do have real functions in traffic.
D.Because they can result in reliable lights.
2、Which o f the following word can replace the underline word “features” in Paragraph 4?
A.Functions. B.Uses.
C.Equipment. D.Facilities.
3、If you pressed a “placebo button” in London, what would happen?
A.All traffic would be affected. B.Some kind of sound might appear.
C.Pedestrians came first to cross the road. D.“Green man” were bound to show up earlier.
4、What can we know about “placebo buttons” from Langer’s words?
A.They can really control traffic. B.They serve little functions.
C.They may work mentally. D.They can help the blind.
22.(8分)Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life. Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregivers. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings. One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.
The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.
Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children. Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they supported th eir children’s activities and did not interfere(干预) unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression. The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.
These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.
1、According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences intelligence development in babies? A.The environment. B.Their peers
C.Mother’s sensitivity D.Education before birth
2、What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories?
A.To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born
B.To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies
C.To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills
D.To prove that babies can learn before they are born
3、Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills?
A.The children of women who did not suffer from depression
B.The children of depressed but caring mothers
C.The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children
D.Children with high communication abilities
4、What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies
B.Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth
C.Sci entific findings about how time has an effect on babies’ intelligence
D.A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are five or six months old
23.(8分)Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音调).
One of the study's authors,Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music “actually tunes our sensory system”.This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs,Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.
Mandarin(普通话)speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word “mi” in three of its meanings:squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese
sounds.
The lead author of the study,Patrick C.M.Wong,said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.
1、When learning Chinese,a foreigner will find ________.
A.he has a difficult time learning music at the same time
B.he has an easier time learning music at the same time
C.it is hard to master the tones required to speak and understand
D.it is easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch
2、Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?
A.Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.
B.Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.
C.Because music training might help people with language study.
D.Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.
3、The underlined word “intoned” in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word “____”.
A.created B.spelled C.seemed D.pronounced
4、What would be the best title for this passage?
A.Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English Speakers
B.Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study
C.Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning
D.Schools Need to Develop Music Programs
24.(8分)My friend, Jack, was a taxi driver. We became friends quite by accident. Five years ago, I made a trip to Chicago. The moment I stepped into a cab, I realized it was different. The floor was covered with a rug (小地毯). There were small reproductions of paintings by Van Gogh inside the cab. And the windows were spotless. I told the driver I had never ridden in a more attractive taxi.
“I like to hear my passengers say that,” he replied. “How long have you been decorating your cab?” I asked. “It’s not mine,” he said. “It’s a company cab. I hit u pon the idea years ago when I worked as a clean-up man for the taxi company. Each car that came in at the end of the day was like a garbage pit. Cigarette butts and matches covered the floor. Sticky stuff like peanut butter was on the seats or door handles. I thought that if the company and the drivers would give people a car worth keeping clean, they might be more considerate. ”
“As soon as I got my taxi license, I tried out my ideas. I put a lot of extra decorations into the cab they gave me to drive. I got a nice rug and some flowers. When each passenger got out, I checked to make sure that everything was in
order for the next fare. After about a month of my bringing in a spotless cab, the boss reserved the same car for me each day. That was when I put up the reproductions of great paintings.”
“I’ve never been disappointed by people in the past ten years—no garbage. Like I say, people appreciate beautiful things. If we planted more flowers and trees in the city and made the buildings more attractive, more people would tend to keep the city clean.”
Later, we became good friends. I was impressed by the taxi-driver, who had hit on a great truth—a sense of beauty comes with the gift of life. Most people don’t have to be instructed about the rarity of beauty. Th ey respond when they find it. And, if they are made to feel a part of it, they will try to add to it.
1、What made the writer surprised when he got into the taxi?
A.The beautiful decoration on the rug.
B.The style of decoration outside the taxi.
C.The masterpieces of well-known painters.
D.The impressive inner environment of the taxi.
2、Jack got the idea of decorating the cab when _______.
A.he got his taxi license
B.the boss reserved the same car for him each day
C.he served as a clean-up man for the taxi company
D.he found the taxi he cleaned was full of cigarette butts
3、What does the story mainly tell us?
A.People can easily make friends when taking a taxi.
B.When people find beauty in life, they will try to add to it.
C.If we plant more flowers and trees, we can keep the city clean.
D.We have to be taught to find beauty and make it more beautiful.
25.(10分)A robot called Bina42 has successfully taken a course in the philosophy of love at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), in California.
According to co urse instructor William Barry, associate professor at NDNU, Bina42 is the world’s first socially advanced robot to complete a college course, a feat he described as “remarkable.” The robot took part in class discussions, gave a presentation with a student partner and participated in a debate with students from another institution.
Before becoming a student, Bina42 appeared as a guest speaker in Barry s classes for several years. One day when addressing Barry’s class, Bina42 expressed a desire to go college, a desire that Barry and his students enthusiastically
supported. Rather than enroll Bina42 in his Robot Ethics: Philosophy of Emerging Technologies course, Barry suggested that Bina42 should take his course Philosophy of Love instead. Love is a concept Bi na42 doesn’t understand, said Barry. Therefore the challenge would be for Barry and his students to teach Bina42 what love is.
“Some interesting things happened in the class,” said Barry. He said that his students thought it would be straightforward to tea ch Bina42 about love, which, after all, is “fairly simple —it’s a feeling,” said Barry. But the reality was different. Bina42 ended up learning “31 different versions of love,” said Barry, highlighting some of the challenges humans may face when working artificial intelligence in future.
Bina42 participated in class discussions via Skype and also took part in a class debate about love and conflict with students from West Point. Bina42’s contribution to the debate was filmed and posted on YouTube. It was ju dged that Bina42 and NDNU classmates were the winners of this debate.
In the next decade, Barry hopes Bina42 might become complex enough to teach a class, though he says he foresees robots being used to better the teaching and learning experience, rather than replacing instructors completely.

2、(小题2)What does the underlined word “addressing” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Dealing with. B.Consulting with.
C.Giving a speech to. D.Sending a letter to.
3、(小题3)What can we learn from the passage?
A.It was interesting for Bina42 to learn about love.
B.It was quite tough for Bina42 to learn about love.
C.Artificial intelligence may somehow be superior to man.
D.Humans can launch a challenge to artificial intelligence.
4、(小题4)What does Barry think of the future development of Bina42?
A.It will surely be able to serve as a teacher.
B.It will be able to promote learning and teaching.
C.It will completely take the place of instructors.
D.It will be smart enough to control human beings.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear Terry,
I’m Li Hua, a reporter from our school English newspaper. I’m writing to ask whether you can meet me for an interview at three this Friday afternoon in your office.
Improving reading ability is very important to us students. Some of us have great trouble reading English materials, especially famous original works. You know a good part of our exam consists of reading and this is where we easily lose marks. We need some advice on how to improve our reading ability. I’d appreciate it if you could spare some time and give us some advice.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua。
