13. The bristlecone pine is the longest-living thing on the earth. These trees, with their strangely-shaped, wind-beaten limbs(枝干), can live up to 5,000 years. But experts worry that a warming climate in some areas may threaten its future.
Researchers say warmer weather is permitting a similar kind of tree, the limber pine, to take over good growing places from the ancient bristlecone. They say the tree is being crowded out of mountainous areas where it grows.
“The bristlecone pine is the oldest individually growing organism,” researchers say. They grow in high mountain forests in eastern California,Nevada and Utah. In those mountains, the trees face high winds and extreme temperatures, which leave them with twisted limbs and shapes. “Even in such tough conditions,” Brian Smithers, a researcher at the University of California, said, “the limber pine is taking all the good spots.”
The limber pine is the bristlecone’s distant relative and competitor. It can also live a long time——up to 2,000 years. And it is usually found at lower altitudes, where temperatures are warmer. However, according to a three-year study which centered on trees that have started growing in the last 50 years in California’s White Mountains, most of the trees growing at higher altitudes were limber pines.
Scientists compared the competing species to two o1d men in a very slow race up a mountainside. This race between such slow-growing trees takes thousands of years. They say climate change is causing the competition.
Smithers said the bristlecone pines are not in danger of disappearing. But he assumes they could be crowded out of some places where they have grown for thousands of years.
The researchers say the findings show how climate change can affect the two kinds of trees. The information, they say, can help scientists understand more complex forests.1. What’s the function of Paragraph 1?

14. T he Curious Origins of the Dollar Sign
The dollar sign i s among the world’s most powerful symbols and represents far more than U.S. currency. Y et despite its common appearance in various languages, the origins of the dollar sign remain far from clear. And the ollar sign was in use before the United State was born.
In 1520, the Kingdom of Bohemia began making coins using silver from a mine in Joachimsthal —which is roughly translated from German into English as Joachim’s valley. Logically, the coin was named the Joachimsthaler, which was then shortened to Thaler, the
spread around the world. It was the Dutch variation, the Daler, that made its way across the Atlantic in the pockets and on the tongues of early immigrants, and today’s American-English pronunciation of the word “dollar” still has its echoes. However, it is no straightforward answer to the question of where the dollar sign ($) sprang from.
One of the origin stories links it back to the Bohemian “Thaler”, which featured a huge snake on Christian cross (基督教十字架). It was an indirect reference to the story of Moses, who was a prophet in the Bible, winding a bronze snake around a pole in order to cure people who’d been bitten. The dollar, so it’s said, originated from that sign.
Y et the most widely accepted theory in fact involves coins used in Spain, and it goes like this: In the colonies, trade between Spanish Americans and English Americans was lively, and the PESO was legal money in the U.S. until 1857. It was often shortened to the initial “P” with an “S” hovering beside and a little above it. Gradually, thanks to the careless and untidy way of writing by time-pressed merchants, that “P” combined with the “S” and lost its curve, leaving the vertical stroke like a stake down the center of the “S”.
1. What can be known about the dollar sign?
A.It symbolizes wealth.B.It starts from a silver mine.
C.It uses worldwide.D
.It was born as early as the U.S. did.
2. Which language mostly contributes to the origin of the pronunciation of the word “dollar” ?

3. What can be inferred form Paragraph 3?
A.The Bohemian “Thaler” included religious elements.
B.The snake was regarded to be the sign of curing power.
C.The dollar sign had been in use since the story of Moses.
D.The Bohemian people made their coins in honor of Moses.
4. what’s the direct result of business men’s writing way of the word PESO?
A.The word was shortened.B.The dollar sign was invented.
C.The latter P and S were blending.D.The writing way was widely spread.

15. I nstead of throwing the pits (核) or nuts after eating fruits like many people, inheritors of nut carving will collect them and turn them into artworks.
“One nut, ranging from 0.8 to 6 centimeters, c n be shaped into delicate earrings, buttons, seals, etc,” said Tan Wanhai, an inheritor of Weifang nut carving.
Weifang nut carving can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty, during which a retired royal craftsman Wang Dayan spread the skill to the locals in Shandong. Craftsmen back then often used peach pits to display their artistic skills. Due to the demanding carving skills and its rich artistic content including many different elements, Weifang nut carving was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage as early as 2008.
Tan has studied the nut carving over 25 years and has created many nut carvings along the way. Yet, the 48-year-old craftsman also admitted that the journey of bringing this kind of masterpiece to life is not all smooth sailing. “Unlike some pits like olive pits whose surfaces are flat, each peach pit has a unique texture like fingerprints,” Tan said, adding that craftsmen should have the capability to trace each peach pit carefully to plan their artwork
Also, craftsmen need to have a wide foundation of knowledge when it comes to carving nuts. According to Tan, they have to master skills in painting, seal carving and calligraphy from many traditional cultures. Sometimes, to depict classic folktales or legends in their artworks better, they need to read many books to prepare themselves.
It is this kind of dedication that Tan and others possess that allows Weifang nut carving to thrive when many traditional skills are gradually disappearing. “In recent years, Weifang nut carving artworks have been increasingly welcomed by people in China for their inventive layout and novel ideas,” Tan said. This popularity, in turn, has also attracted many people to learn the skill of nut carving and even become inheritors to pass it down.

16. Nisha Pradhan is worried. The recent college graduate just turns 21 and plans to live on her own. But she’s afraid she won’t be able to stay safe. That’s because she isn’t able to smell.
Back home, her family do her smelling for her. She’s moved in with them for now, but she’s looking for a place of her own. “Now that I’m searching for ways or place to live as an independent person, I find that the sense of smell is important to how we live our lives,” Pradhan says.
She says when she was a child she liked to eat and ate a lot. But there came a point where she lost interest in food.
“One of the first things that people notice whenever they have a smell problem is that food doesn’t taste right any more,” says Beverly Cowart, a researcher. That’s because eating and smell go hand in hand. How food tastes often rely on what we smell. “When you lose your sense of smell, your whole sense of food flavors changed and reduced,” Cowart says, “You can still taste the basic tastes. What you’re missing are the small distinctions.”
“When I go out to eat I have often found that food is very tasteless to me. I never feel full,” she says. “I think a lot of us today like to pretend to be food lovers and we all like to talk about ‘Oh, I think this could use a little bit more flavor,’ or ‘I think this has a hint of meat,’ I can’t really participate in those conversations,” she says.
Pradam thinks her smell loss also may have affected her memory. Pradhan may be on to something, according to biologist Paul Moore. “When smell signals come in, you feel about them first. And then you think about it and then the memory is laid down. So without the feel part, the thinking about its part doesn’t come And that means no new smell memory gets created.”
1. What is true about Pradhan?
A.She has had no sense of smell since she was born.
B.She suffers from loss of appetite through lack of smell sense.
C.She has something wrong with her stomach.
D.She is looking for a roommate to share the cost.
2. What can we infer from what Beverly Cowart said?
A.People with a smell problem have no food tastes.
B.Different food tastes the same for people of smell loss.
C.Lack of smell sense makes eating a dull experience.
D.People feel hungry easily for lack of smell sense.
3. When eating out, Pradhan ________.
