In 1880, fourteen-year-old Matthew Henson loved to hear sailors tell tales of their exciting lives at sea. The next morning he set out on the forty-mile journey to seek work on a sailing ship.
In Baltimore, Henson found a job as a cabin boy on a beautiful ship called the Katie Hinds. For the next five years, Henson sailed around the world. By the time he left the Katie Hinds in 1885, Henson was well educated and had become an excellent seaman.
Unable to find work anywhere else, Henson took a job in a hat shop in Washington, D.C. One day in 1887, a man came in to buy a hat. The man, Lieutenant Robert Peary, asked the owner if he knew anyone with experience at sea. Peary would soon travel to South America for the U.S. government. He needed experienced men to accompany him.
The shop owner knew about his young employee’s skills and experience on ocean voyages, so he introduced Peary to Henson. Henson and Peary soon found they had a great deal in common, including their love of the sea.
Using his map-reading and sailing skills, Henson proved himself to be a worthy and intelligent seaman. One day Peary told Henson about his real dream: to be the first man to stand on “the top of the world” at the North Pole. He asked Henson to help him make his dream come true.
Over the next five years, the two explorers made two trips together to the Arctic. However, they were not able to reach the pole either time.
In 1908, Peary and Henson were ready to make their final attempt at reaching the North Pole. Both men were over forty years old. The years of hardship and suffering in the arctic cold had taken their toll on both men. This would be their last chance.
In April 1909, Henson’s instruments showed they were standing at the North Pole. Together Henson and Peary planted the American flag in the snow.

As human beings, the ability to understand emotions is key in social situations. Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are often self-absorbed and seem to exist in a private world. They may have difficulty developing language skills and understanding what others say to them. They also often have difficulty expressing themselves through hand gestures, eye contact, and facial expressions.
However, many people with ASD show a strong and early connection with music and are able to feel simple and complex musical emotions in childhood and adulthood, the paper Music: a unique window into the world of autism shows.
“I saw unbelievable musical and emotional growth in students with autism after they began to study music,” Mitchell White, a doctoral candidate of the University of South Florida and mother of three adult sons with autism, expresses on The Conversation, a network of non-profit organizations. “As a music teacher, I have seen the emotional change that music brings about both in the music classroom and at home.”
According to Mitchell White, musical emotions are easier to fathom for kids with autism than regular emotions because they are not as socially complex as the latter. There’s no need to use the ability to read facial expressions or to get the message behind a specific tone of voice.
Apart from giving children with autism a way to express themselves, music can strengthen speech and improve language skills through the use of songs. A study shows that the brain area that is responsible for the production of language is less activated during speech stimulation (刺激) but more activated during song stimulation in autistic children with language barriers.
Professional help is very important, but not just music therapists (治疗专家) can use music to help autistic children. Eugenia Hernandez-Ruiz, an assistant professor at Arizona State University, has been working on finding ways to help parents of autistic children use music in t heir children’s development. Although an autistic child’s thoughts may remain unknown to his parents most of the time, Eugenia believes they can learn to communicate through the language of music in a family setting.
32. What is challenging for children with ASD?
A.Working out complex math questions.
B.Reading uncommon facial expressions.
C.Socializing through words and body language.
D.Remembering simple dialogues and movements.
33. What are Mitchell White’s words meant to stress?
A.The positive effects of music learning on autism.
B.The shortage of music teachers for autistic kids.
C.Limited research on early music experience.
D.Her great achievements in music education.
34. What does the underlined word “fathom” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Hide. B.Sense. C.Change. D.Control.
35. What can we infer about autistic children from the explanation in Paragraph 5?
A.Songs can help greatly encourage their creativity.
B.They prefer to express themselves through singing.
C.They have a natural talent for music at an early age.
D.Music is effective in promoting their language skills.
How to limit your environmental impact while travelling
Travelling unlocks a world of endless possibilities and adventures, allowing us to hike through breathtaking landscapes, encounter kangaroos and deer in their natural habitat, and witness the power of volcanoes. 36 Increased plastic waste and noise pollution can damage ecosystems. Thankfully, there are ways to limit our impact on the environment.
Try to travel by land instead of air. While air travel can often be quicker, it is typically one of the most polluting forms of transport. 37 For example, if you’re heading to Las Vegas from Los Angeles, driving for around four hours emits (排放) around 75% less CO2 compared to the one-hour flight (provided you have several friends with you).
38 A typical hotel uses about 73,000 gallons of water per year. As laundering towels (洗熨毛巾) is an energy-and-water-consuming process, many hotels often put up signs asking you to re-use your towels. By doing so, you’ll reduce your environmental impact.
Make the most of safe tap water (自来水). Drinking tap water may come as a shock to many travelers. But when you’re in countries where tap water is safe to consume, avoid bottled options. Not only are they more expensive, but they have a higher level of pollution compared to treated tap water. 39
Respect the local environment. When visiting different destinations, we should recognize the importance of protecting the natural beauty. We mustn’t throw rubbish everywhere. 40 Additionally, supporting local conservation (保护) efforts, such as participating in community-led clean-up projects, can make a positive impact on the local environment.
It all began on a cold, rainy day.
Sarah, a poor single mother, was ________ to make ends meet. While waiting for the bus with her two children, Sarah ________ an old man sitting on a nearby bench. He was shivering (颤抖), his ________ jacket providing little protection against the freezing weather.
Sarah ________ the man and offered him her coat. She knew it would make her cold, but the thought of this stranger ________ while she had something to give was too much to bear. ________ by her selflessness, the man thankfully accepted the coat and gave back a smile. Little did Sarah know that her simple act of ________ would make a huge difference.
A man, who saw the heartwarming ________, took a photo and shared it on social media. The post quickly became a ________, with thousands of people sharing and commenting on S arah’s
________. Encouraged by her, people began organizing events to ________ those less lucky. Schools added lessons on the ________ of helping others, and businesses started a “pay it forward” project, where people could buy more and leave the ________ meal for those in need.
Reflecting on this unbelievable journey, we can ________ our individual power, which may create an effect that would ________ reach every corner of the globe.

A Pleasant Surprise
For a long time, I had been longing for a piano of my own to practice on.
There was a piano shop on the street through which I went to school every day. Whenever I passed the shop, I would stop, looking at the beautiful piano which stood in the corner of the shop window. How I had been dreaming day and night to possess a piano like that!
Unfortunately, Father was just a clerk. Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove. In order to lay aside some money, on cold winter days Father walked 7 miles every day to get to work. No, he couldn’t afford to buy me an expensive piano—such an extravagance (奢侈品), though he knew that I was very anxious for one as a gift.
On my birthday, after school I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano, but to my surprise the piano had gone. In fact, I should not have been surprised, others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. Tears filled my eyes when I thought of not being able to see that piano any more.
Disappointed, helpless and sad, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. About an hour later, I had just entered into our house, when I heard my mother calling me. I brushed away my tears and went into the dining-room where she was.
I could not believe my
eyes.____________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________。
