文章讲述了北京立法者通过了城市修改后的计划生育和人口条例。
其中一个亮点是,产假将延长30天,文章还介绍了延长产假带来的影响等。
14. On Nov 26, lawmakers in Beijing passed the city's modified family planning and population regulations. One of the highlights was that maternity leave (产假)would be extended by 30 days.
Tang Xiaoyu, who has a 5-month-old baby, said she had the feeling of winning the lottery. The 32-year-old works in the human resources department of an Internet company in Beijing. Previously, new mothers like her were usually entitled to 128 days of paid maternity leave.
Moreover, new mothers can now take additional maternity leave of one to three months if their employer agrees, and both mother and father can have five days of child care leave every year until their child reaches the age of 3.
Beijing is one of about 20 provincial—level entities that have decided to extend maternity leave or add parental leave to their newly modified family planning regulations.
After the adoption of the third-child policy in August, the extra measures were rolled out as part of moves to ease the burden of having a newborn and also to encourage families to have more children.
Mu Guangzong, a professor at Peking University's Institute of Population Research, said that the extension of maternity leave in several regions is a significant move toward building a "fertility (生育)friendly" society. "However, it may have negative aspects," he told Legal Daily.
Song Tianjiao, who is looking for a job in Beijing, said she was asked about her status of marriage and childbearing plans at several job interviews. In one extreme case, she was asked to guarantee that she would not get pregnant for two years after starting the job.
"In such an environment, will the extension of maternity leave make it harder for women to find a job?" she said.
Chen Xia, a researcher with the Institute of Philosophy at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that such concerns are reasonable, and the current dilemma is that the costs of favorable fertility policies are shouldered almost totally by employers.
1. In the second paragraph, Tang Xiaoyu had "the feeling of winning the lottery", because .
A.she had enough money to support her family
B.her maternity leave increased to 30 days
C.she had more time to take care of her baby
D.she was very grateful to the new policy
2. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Lawmakers hoped to ease the burden of having more children.
B.The third-child policy must be carried out strictly.
C.New mothers shall take maternity leave of one to three months.
D.More job opportunities will be created for women
3. What can be inferred from what Song Tianjiao said?
A.Lengthened leave will likely impose heavier costs on family.
B.The new policies may deepen gender discrimination in the workplace.
C.A woman's childbearing plans will be asked about at the job interviews.
D.The extension of maternity leave contributes to building a fertility-friendly society.
4. According to Chen Xia, one possible measure to solve the negative aspects is .
A.issuing fertility allowances for families B.making tax—free policies for employers
C.promoting gender equality D.formulating loosened third—child policies

15. To tackle the problem of tiny plastics polluting waterways, chemists in the Czech Republic are thinking small. Their brainchild is a new
microrobot which is no bigger than the tip of a sharpened pencil. When sunlight hits them, they produce chemical reactions that push them through water in a specific direction. When they find a piece of plastic, they stick to it and start to break it down.
Chemist Martin Pumera at the Czech University led the project. A decade ago, he chose to focus on the problem posed by microplastics. They’re everywhere—from the bottom of the ocean to air blowing onto ice atop mountains. They’ve turned up in drinking water. Some studies estimate that billions of pieces of plastic end up in the world’s waters. The plastic has many sources, from shopping bags to washing and cleaning wipes.
In lab experiments, the star-shaped swimmers stuck onto each of four different types of plastic. And after a week exposed to light, the robots had reduced the weight of the plastics. It wasn’t much—only by percent. But that was an indication that they were breaking the plastic down. They also caused the surface of the plastic to change from smooth to rough. That’s another sign that the robots were degrading (分解) it. The new study is a proof of concept type. That means it shows something can be done successfully.
In fact, Pumera says they still have a long way to go. There are many types of plastics. And even these microrobots are unlikely to succeed in degrading them all. The researchers also have not yet shown how safe this system is for the environment, although Pumera says that’s their next goal. The first real-world test will be in a wastewater-treatment plant. “Indeed,” says one researcher. “We’ll need a lot of testing to show that they’re safe in open waterways, such as at sea.”
1. The microrobots are powered by ______.
A.water B.sunlight C.plastics D.pencils
2. What does the author focus on in Paragraph 2?
A.The purpose of Pumera’s project.B.The preciousness of drinking water.
C.The seriousness of plastic pollution.D.The working principle of the microrobots.
3. What shows the effectiveness of the microrobots in lab experiments?
A.The weight loss of the plastics.B.The disappearance of the plastics.
C.The shape change of the microrobots.D.The improvement in the purity of water.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Ways to Obtain Cleaner Drinking Water B.Microrobots Invented to Treat Wastewater

16. A simple blood test that can tell how well a person is likely to age is on the horizon after scientists uncovered blood signature patterns which predict ill health. The breakthrough means doctors will soon be able to check the likelihood of dementia(痴呆), cardiovascular disease and a range of other conditions many years before patients show any symptoms.
Researchers at Boston University learned to recognize combinations of specific biomarkers (生物标志物), or chemicals found in the blood, of 5,000 people in a study. They then matched these with the participants’ health outcomes over a period of eight years. They found specific patterns associated with disease and disability-free aging, as well as patterns associated with the threat of several diseases.
While various techniques already exist for predicting specific conditions, such as heart disease, the new approach will, for the most part, enable doctors to paint a comprehensive picture of their patient’s overall future health. It also promises to give people the chance to change their lifestyles or begin preventative treatment to circumvent diseases considered as a risk by their blood composition.
“These signatures show differences in how people age, and they show promise in predicting healthy ageing, changes in cognitive(认知的) and physical function, survival and age-related diseases like stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer,” the research team said. “We can now measure thousands of biomarkers from a small amount of blood with the idea of eventually being able to predict who is at risk of a wide range of diseases long before any clinical signs become apparent.”
1. What can the new technique be used to do?
A.Cure a person’s dementia.
B.Prevent people from aging.
C.Tell a person’s future health.
D.Change people’s blood composition.
2. Which can replace the underlined word “circumvent” in paragraph 3?
A.understand B.spread C.record D.avoid
3. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about the new technique?
A.Its practical use.B.Its original theory.
C.Its development process.D.Its widespread popularity.
4. Where can the text be found?
A.In an economic report.B.In a medical magazine.
C.In an investigation report.D.In an entertainment newspaper.

5
Do whatever you can to make your screen easier to read-whether that’s increasing the text size, switching the contrast levels or changing the colour temperature(avoiding blue light tones as much as possible, which are linked to more eye strain problems). Play around with all the settings until you find what works best for you.
A.Adjust your settings
B.Be sure to clean your screen regularly
C.Switch the screen into eye protection mode
D.In fact, looking at a screen is unavoidable for most
