Street Sign Answers
1. 2. 3. 1. 2. 3. 1. 2. 3. It is a street sign. You would find this sign on a street or street corner. The color of the words is white. You would find this type of street sign on the corner, where two streets intersect. The W represents or means West. The ST on the signs represents or means Street. Yes or maybe. Some may have only a single sign or two separate signs. The streets that parallel 4th street are 3rd and 5th. The street is named Race Street because people raced on it or the school track is at the end of it where track races are held.

Introduction
Using functional reading folders, similar to those on the following slides, is one way teachers can address functional literacy
Functional folders provide students with a more meaningful, real-world approach to reading and comprehension These folders accommodate three levels of literacy (low, average, and best) to allow teachers to work within the student’s zone of proximal development and scaffold to a higher level when appropriate Because most students are already familiar with many functional items, such as food labels and flyers, this approach allows teachers to connect new information to students’ prior knowledge
Introduction
Implications of functional illiteracy on the individual and society can be severe (Functional illiteracy, n.d.)
Functionally illiterate adults may experience social intimidation, stress, health risks, and low income An estimated 60 percent of adults in prisons and 85 percent of juvenile offenders are functionally or marginally illiterate The Northeast Institute’s 2001 Literacy at Work study found businesses suffer billion-dollar losses each year because of employe productivity, and errors
