13. In recent years, massive wildfires have destroyed landscapes and endangered people and animals in the US, Australia and Greece. These
disasters have led to scores of deaths, and there is a growing scientific agreement that destructive wildfires will become more frequent as the planet continues to warm.
The statistics show that casualties, as well as the area of land burned, around the world are increasing year by year. That prompted Kamilaris and his colleagues to build a mobile app that provides personalised evacuation (撤离) routes to anyone caught in the path of a wildfire.
The app connects over mobile networks to a web server running a fire simulation (模拟) program, which uses publicly available data on geography, weather and vegetation type to predict the spread of fires at 15-minute intervals.
A fire management tool similar to those already in use lets local fire departments quickly tag when and where a fire starts, which is then used to
generate real-time simulations. The app then takes the GPS location of each user to work out potential routes, selecting the best by weighing up how quickly each route gets them to safety against how close it takes them to the fire’s path.
The best option is then displayed either as turn-by-turn directions or as a route overlaid on a map of the area similar to those used by popular maps apps.
In a small pilot program at the Athalassa National Forest Park in Cyprus, all 17 people who took part successfully escaped a simulated fire. In questionnaires they answered after the trial, the participants said the app was easy to use and that they would use it in a real wildfire.
But Ed Galea, a fire safety expert, worries that the route-planning algorithm (运算法则 ) in the study is too simple to deal with the complexities of
a real-world evacuation, such as varying travel speeds or potential congestion on escape routes.
And while fire and evacuation models can help experts plan or respond to emergencies, he thinks even state-of-the-art systems have limitations that currently make them unsafe in the hands of untrained people.
“That is not to say that the goal of having a personalised wildfire evacuation guidance system is not achievable” he says. “Just not today.”
Kamilaris admits the app still needs work and says the researchers plan to add features, like the ability to tailor travel speed and monitor users to prevent congestion, before testing again in more challenging situations.
1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To present the central topic of global warming.
B.To introduce the background for inventing the app.
C.To raise a serious problem that will be solved later.
D.To arouse the readers’ interest in the newly-invented app.

A.It has the feature of monitoring the user’s movement.
B.It is not user-friendly, especially for those untrained.
C.It provides updates about the fire every 15 minutes.
D.It has access to the fire department’s database.
3. One limitation of the new app is that________.
A.the route-planning algorithm used is not accurate
B.the escape route is too complex to follow
C.it may fall into the hands of bad people
D.it can’t predict the real-time congestion
4. With regard to a personalized wildfire evacuation guidance system, both Ed Galea and Kamilaris will agree probably that________.
A.its necessity is not to be questioned
B.its biggest obstacle is privacy protection
C.it will be commercialized soon
D.its achievement is almost impossible

文章主要介绍微塑料颗粒进入大气层开始“移动”,这种“移动”会对生态系统造成破坏。
14. According to US national park researchers, microplastic particles (微粒) equal to as many as 300 million plastic water bottles are raining down on the Grand Canyon.
In a survey of 11 remote western places, also including the Great Basin and Craters of the Moon national parks, researchers discovered more than 1000 tons of microplastic particles that had traveled through the atmosphere via rain or water particles.
Most microplastics are from larger pieces of plastic. Since plastics don’t degrade (降解), plastics that end up in waste piles or landfills break down into microparticles and make their way through the Earth’s atmosphere, soil and water systemics.
Janice Brahney, lead researcher at Utah State University, said, “Plastics could be deposited (沉降), readmitted to the atmosphere again, transported for some time…who knows how many times, and who knows how far they’ve traveled?”
Brahney’s team found that so-called wet microplastics, named for the way they are transported, are most likely disturbed by a storm and swept up into the atmosphere, having originated in larger urban areas. By comparison, the spreading patterns of dry microplastics is the same as dust and can travel long distances, often across continents.
Brahney warned that new findings show an urgent need to reduce plastic pollution. Although their full effects on the human body are still unknown, scientists are starting to raise public health concerns over microplastic particles: They’re small enough to stay in lung tissue, causing damage and, in some cases of routine exposure, can lead to asthma and cancer.
Scientists have also found that microplastic particles affect the temperature adjustment function of the soil, leading to losses in plant life.
Brahney believes that her research is just the beginning of understanding how microplastics move through ecosystems.
“Learning about plastics and how they don’t degrade seems like, ‘Oh my God, we should have been expecting this: they’ re just made into these tiny sizes, they could certainly be carried by the wind,” Brahney said.
“We’ve just been missing it,” she added.
1. The direct cause of the microplastic rain is that_________.
A.small pieces from plastics become degradable
B.microplastic particles travel into the atmosphere
C.plastic particles end up in waste piles or landfills
D.plastic water bottles are transported to the water systems
2. What did Janice Brahney and her team find out?
A.The structure of microplastic particles.
B.The distance that microplastics can travel.
C.The way that microplastics are transported.
D.The different types of microplastic particles.
3. What does the author mainly want to tell us with the text?
A.Microplastics have affected the ecosystem.
B.Plastic particles have serious effects on human health.
C.Methods to degrade plastics could be developed soon.
D.Researchers have missed the best time to study plastics.
4. What’s the attitude of Brahney towards the microplastic move according to the last two paragraphs?
A.Favorable.B.Uncaring.
C.Doubtful.D.Worried.

文章主要介绍了嫦娥五号探月成果及意义。
15. Chang’e-5 returned to Earth on December 16, 2020, carrying around 2 kilograms of rocks and soils from the moon. The successful mission
(任务) marks a big step forward for China’s space industry.
“These samples will be a treasure chest!” Brad Jolliff, director of the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences at Washington University, wrote in an email, “My hat is off to our Chinese colleagues for accomplishing a very difficult task.”
The newly collected rocks come from a place close to the Mons Rumker that was believed to have been volcanic in ancient times. By comparison, the age of these samples are thought to be billions of years younger than those brought to Earth by Apollo astronauts in the 1970s. They will help scientists fill in a gap in knowledge about the history of the moon between roughly one billion and three billion years ago. They may also help scientists study the useful materials on the moon.
Chang’e-5 is the third phase of the Chinese lunar exploration project started in the early 2000s. Orbiters Chang’e-1 and 2 and the landing and roving missions Chang’e-3 and 4 marked the first two stages.
Chang’e-5 mission is much more challenging than previous missions. New challenges include the sampling and following stages. “We usually completed the rocket launching (发射) on the earth at a fixed point. We have a proven technique in this field. But we still have difficulties in the liftoff of a lunar lander. We have never tried this before,” said Yu Dengyun, deputy chief designer of China’s lunar exploration program.
The success of Chang’e-5 sample return mission has shown that China is able to carry out its plan to build a long-term crewed International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) in the lunar south pole region during 2036~2045. Success of Chang’e-5 will also see Chang’e-6 repurposed for a landing at the lunar south pole around 2023. Chang’e-6 is a sample return spacecraft engineered at the same time as Chang’e-5 to provide a backup in the event of failure.
1. Why is Brad Jolliff so excited about the lunar samples returned by Chang’e-5?
A.They are collected for the first time.B.They are from a live volcano.
C.They will provide more valuable data.D.They are billions of years older.
2. What can be inferred from paragraph 5?
A.China has overcome the difficulties in building ILRS.
B.Yu was worried about Chang’e-5 sample return mission.
C.China is ready for more challenging lunar explorations.
D.The 2036~2045 mission will be much more challenging.
3. Which spacecraft is very similar to Chang’e-5?
A.Chang’e-2.B.Chang’e-3.C.Chang’e-4.D.Chang’e-6.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.China’s Great Win Over the United States
B.China’s Lunar Explorations in Twenty Years
C.Future Exploration Programs for Chang’e Spacecrafts
D.Chang’e-5 Lunar Sample Return Mission Accomplished

文章主要讲述蜘蛛可以根据不同的环境,结不同的网,并研究其原因。
16. An island spider decides which of its three kinds of webs to make depending on the location. Spiders usually make only one kind of web, but the Wendilgarda galapagensis species-found only on Cocos Island, off the western coast of Central America—can make three different webs.
High above ground it makes “aerial” webs attached to nearby stems and leaves. Nearer to the ground it makes “land” webs with long horizontal strands (缕) secured to branches and with vertical strands fixed to the ground. Finally, over pools it makes “water” webs that are a bit like the land webs, but with the vertical strands attached to the water surface itself.
Darko Cotoras at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco wondered whether this flexibility indicates that the spider is undergoing speciation (物种形成), branching into three species, each with unique behaviours and exploiting a different food source. So with his colleagues he ran genetic analyses on 142 of the spiders.
To their surprise, the results suggested they all belonged to the same species. This means they haven’t genetically diversified since they arrived at the volcanic island up to 2 million years ago.
The researchers then marked the 2-millimetre-long spiders and moved them to different locations on the island to track their behaviour. For example, they took water-web-making spiders away from water sources and placed them in high bushes nearby. Again, the researchers were surprised to see that the spiders often built a new web with the architecture suited to the new location.
“They show an unusually wide variety in habitat choice, web design, and construction behavior.” Cotoras says, “This flexibility probably helps these animals live on such a small, remote island.”
1. What can we learn from the text?
A.Cocos Island spiders can only live on remote islands.
B.Cocos Island spiders came into being two million years ago.
C.Cocos Island spiders have branched into three different species.
